‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ May Shoot This Fall, Probably Won’t Be the Last Sequel

by Ethan Anderton

Sherlock Holmes 3 Update

While making the publicity rounds for Captain America: Civil War, some surprising news came from Robert Downey Jr. that Sherlock Holmes 3 was still in the works. In fact, there was even a chance that the film could shoot later this year. Shortly thereafter, the sequel landed a writer with James Coyne hired for the gig. Now producer Joel Silver adds more hope that the sequel will happen, and he indicates that this probably won’t be the last one.

Find out more about Sherlock Holmes 3 and future sequels after the jump.

Collider caught up with franchise producer Joel Silver while promoting his latest effort, Shane Black’s The Nice Guys. Silver echoed Downey’s hope that Sherlock Holmes 3 will be shooting before the end of the year:

It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He’s gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we’re trying to get it done. We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we’re hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we’ll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now.

Scheduling has been the big issue keeping everyone from getting Sherlock Holmes 3 off the ground. Downey has been busy in the Marvel cinematic universe, director Guy Ritchie has been working on Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, the first installment of what is meant to be a bigger franchise, and Jude Law has a role in that movie, in addition to the series The Young Pope. But now it appears they may all have time to bring Holmes and Watson back.

It’s been five years since Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hit theaters, so we’re certainly overdue for a sequel. But are fans really demanding another installment? As much as I enjoy Downey and Law as Holmes and Watson, I found the second installment of the franchise to be underwhelming, and that’s despite bringing Moriarty into the mix. But Silver is under the assumption that people still want more, because Sherlock Holmes 3 likely won’t be the last sequel:

I hope [it’s not the last one]. I don’t think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there’s a character, we can work with it. It’s not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It’s [the actor’s] call. They have to say, ‘Okay, I’m ready to go.’ I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done.

However, there’s plenty of intense action in this iteration of Sherlock Holmes, and Robert Downey Jr. will probably be too old at some point to play the role. One would think that would happen sooner than later without a suit of armor to stand in for him in the action sequence. Sure, there are stunt doubles, but at some point, we’re just not going to believe that an old Sherlock Holmes is still into underground fighting rings. Anyway, stay tuned to see if Sherlock Holmes 3 actually ends up shooting this fall.

Newswire: Fargo season 3 will star Ewan McGregor as two brothers, eh

by Alex McCown

After a superb first season, and then a damn near flawless second, the third season of Fargo will have some awfully big shoes to fill. And now, we’ve got word those large boots will be filled by Ewan McGregor. Deadline reports the Scottish actor will be trading in his native “ayes” and “naes” for some sturdy Minnesotan “yahs” and “oh nos.” This is the first major casting news for the upcoming season, and there’s no word yet on whether McGregor will be playing one of the people who kills everyone, one of the people who dies, or one of the melancholy innocents who then gets to monologue about the hard world we live in.

But there’s plenty of other information about who he’ll be playing—or rather, the two starring roles he’ll tackle. Apparently, McGregor is set to play brothers, Emmit and Ray Stussy, for ...

Great Job, Internet!: Introducing Pornhub’s sex-based exercise program, BangFit

by Joe Blevins
Corey

I have been trying to trick girls into this for years.

By making thousands of hours of pornography available to anyone with an internet connection, Pornhub has inadvertently contributed to making this country more sedentary than it already is. As passive viewers enjoy watching various bangs, they may be neglecting their physical well-being. The Pornhub team apologizes for that, and is atoning by creating BangFit, “a game-based fitness program” that will get you “into incredible shape while having the time of your life.”

Essentially, this is an online game that invites players to strap smartphones to their bodies as they copulate in order to score points and burn calories. The program is being introduced with a colorful animated video that manages to evoke both the 1970s porn craze and the 1980s fitness craze. The cartoon employs an eye-assaulting color scheme not generally seen since the days of “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John. It is puzzling, however, how the cartoon characters in this ...

There's a Garbage Pail Kids Documentary Coming Out and It Looks Awesome

The Underrated Movie Frequency Is Being Remade for TV and Looks Kind Of Great

by Germain Lussier

Loved the movie.

In 2000, a movie called Frequency was released with little fanfare. It starred Jim Caviezel as a police detective who, somehow, begins talking with his dead dad (Dennis Quaid) through a ham radio. Some people liked it, but it never made much of a mark. Nevertheless, it’s always been a great idea and now it’s going to be a TV show.

Great Job, Internet!: “My Heart Will Go On” gets a rousing, 1950s-style doo-wop remake

by Joe Blevins

As recorded by Canadian belter Celine Dion, “My Heart Will Go On,” the Oscar-winning love theme from James Cameron’s Titanic, became so ubiquitous in the late 1990s that it drove many to the point of madness. The song’s lugubrious arrangement and sluggish tempo made it difficult to endure on a continual basis when the single was in heavy rotation. In 2012, Titanic star Kate Winslet revealed her true opinion of the song: “I feel like throwing up when I hear it.” Maybe what Winslet needs, and maybe what the whole world needs, is a more upbeat approach to “My Heart Will Go On.” Luckily, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, a musical ensemble specializing in retro remakes of contemporary songs (“Today’s hits. Yesterday.”), have released their own version of the James Horner-composed ballad, and it’s a real keeper. With chanteuse Aubrey Logan singing lead vocals, this becomes ...

‘Popstar’ Trailer: Andy Samberg Learns How Seal Got Those Scars

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

I love these guys. I am excited for this movie.

Popstar Trailer

After delivering some of the best recorded content Saturday Night Live has ever had, The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer and Jorma Taccone) have collaborated on a feature film that feels like it could have been inspired by one of their SNL Digital Shorts.

This summer brings the new comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a mockumentary following rapper Connor4Real (Samberg) as he releases his new album and goes on tour. A new Popstar trailer shows more of Connor’s stupid antics and the entourage who keeps his ego intact. Have you ever wanted to see a wedding with wolves and Seal? This is your movie.

Watch the Popstar trailer after the jump.

Even though this isn’t quite as laugh-out-loud funny as the red band trailer, it’s still a great impression of the comedy that’s essentially this generation’s This Is Spinal Tap. Chock full of cameos from recording artists, music producers and plenty of celebrity cameos (some playing themselves, others playing characters), this movie has an authenticity to it that makes the comedy land perfectly.

Akiva Shaffer, who co-directs with Jorma Taccone, told ComingSoon on a set visit that he used the documentaries about Katy Perry and One Direction as inspiration for the movie. The Justin Bieber documentary clearly had an influence too, since he’s probably the pop star that Connor4Real is most closely influenced by. But the songs themselves are Lonely Island tracks through and through. This soundtrack is a riot by itself, but the concert sequences that go along with them make them even better. You can listen to two of the tracks featured in this trailer right here.

Between this and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, it sounds like Universal has the two comedies of the summer.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island.  The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.

The latest comedy from blockbuster producer Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Superbad, Knocked Up) co-stars Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph and many of the biggest names in comedy and music in cameo performances.  Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone and written by The Lonely Island trio, Popstar is also produced by Rodney Rothman (producer of Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall; co-writer of 22 Jump Street), as well as Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping arrives on June 3.

Cool Stuff: ‘Se7en’ Poster Inspired by Detective Somerset’s “Dream”

by Jack Giroux

seven poster

Following up the disastrous experience of making Alien 3, director David Fincher made the uncompromising and unforgettable thriller, Se7en. Instead of directing a butchered version of Andrew Kevin Walker‘s hot spec script, Fincher and the film’s stars, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, fought to preserve one of the script’s most defining scenes–the ending. Fincher was initially sent an old draft of the script, which included the original ending before it was rewritten. After being informed he received the wrong draft, the director said he’d only make it if they used the original script. And thank God he made that decision, because if he hadn’t made Se7en, perhaps we would’ve gotten the watered down version of Detective Somerset’s (Freeman) grueling story. Worst of all, the filmmaker never would’ve won his MTV movie award.

The original Se7en poster with two floating heads is fine, but the custom Se7en poster featured below, inspired by the artist/fan’s theory, does the great thriller justice.

Somerset is the eyes, ears, and heart of Se7en. Fincher visualizes the world as he sees it–cruel and dark. What if everything the detective saw and heard was a dream, though? That’s what one artist thinks. Whether you think that’s a silly or unsupported interpretation or not, at least it influenced a remarkable Se7en poster. Over at Changethethought, an artist, who only uses his first name “Chris” on the site, expressed his theory along with displaying the custom poster he designed:

Full se7en poster

I opted for using my own personal take on the film as the crux of my composition. I have always held the belief that Morgan Freeman’s character (Detective Somerset) falls asleep to his metronome at the start of the film. What follows is a dream he has concocted where the perfect crime unfolds over the remaining 7 days before his retirement. Somerset has never successfully fostered a life for himself outside of his work. His work is his life and that life will soon be over. So the perfect crime ensues in his dream and gives rise to his alter ego (Brad Pitt AKA Detective Mills). Mills has everything Somerset doesn’t. A home, a wife, a child on the way, dogs and he still believes his cause is righteous. But alas, this alter ego is destroyed by the faceless John Doe cementing the need for Somerset to stay on the force and keep his (life) and job.

Somerset’s silhouette serves as the container for the imagery as the concept all happens within him. The poster evolves from top to bottom setting up the evidence first, then revealing the central characters with Somerset beginning to sleep on one side and Mills awakening stunned on the other with John Doe as the counter between.

My general issue with the whole dream theory is that, if that is the case, then there isn’t much at stake, and it undercuts whatever tension or violence we see if it’s all one long dream. If Tracy’s head isn’t in the box, then we don’t see the real horrors of the world that Somerset speaks of. The ending confirms the detective’s beliefs and fears, so, for character and narrative purposes, it should be real to have some emotional impact. But at least it’s a different and genuinely well-thought-out take on the film. More importantly, to each their own.

Se7en glow

The artist really did an excellent job of capturing the often nightmarish atmosphere of Fincher’s picture. If you want to learn more about the design, then head over to the artist’s profile page. Unfortunately, the poster isn’t available to purchase; it was commissioned by a group of collectors. The poster, as you can see above, also glows in the dark.

Dwayne Johnson’s ‘The Janson Directive’ Will Begin a New Robert Ludlum Cinematic Universe

by Ethan Anderton

Robert Ludlum Cinematic Universe

Back in September of 2014, news surfaced that Dwayne Johnson would star in The Janson Directive, based on the novel of the same name from The Bourne Identity author Robert Ludlum. The project just so happened to be set up at Universal Pictures, the home of the Jason Bourne film franchise, which made the opportunity for a crossover easily possible. Thankfully, Universal isn’t trying to expand the world of Jason Bourne again, but they are looking to create a new cinematic universe.

The Janson Directive will be the first in a series of films based on Robert Ludlum novels that all take place in the same universe, and Universal has already assembled a team to shepherd the new endeavor. Find out more about the Robert Ludlum cinematic universe after the jump.

If you’re unfamiliar with The Janson Directive, here’s the official synopsis of the book from Amazon:

When billionaire philanthropist Peter Novak is kidnapped by a terrorist known as The Caliph, it’s up to Paul Janson — a legend in the notorious U.S. covert agency Consular Operations — to save him. But Janson’s rescue operation goes horribly wrong…and soon Janson is marked for death, the target of a “beyond salvage” order issued from the highest level of the government. Now Janson is running for his life, pursued by Jessica Kincaid, a young agent of astonishing ability who can anticipate and counter his every move. To survive, Janson must outrace a conspiracy that has gone beyond the control of its originators. To win, he must counter it with a conspiracy of his own…

Johnson will be playing the title character with the book being adapted by James Vanderbilt, the writer behind The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, White House Down and this summer’s Independence Day: Resurgence. Those titles don’t exactly inspire confidence, but at the very least, Vanderbilt has blockbuster film experience.

Vanderbilt worked with Akiva Goldsman (who is coming off building the Transformers cinematic universe) to crack the story for The Janson Directive, and he’ll also be working with his Mythology Entertainment partners Brad Fischer and William Sherak to develop the series of films that will be part of the Robert Ludlum universe. Captivate Entertainment’s Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner are also overseeing the cinematic universe creation as well.

Beyond The Janson Directive, other titles that Universal already had in development that will be part of this new universe include The Parsifal Mosaic, The Sigma Protocol and Covert One. That means these movies won’t be part of the Jason Bourne universe, which also includes The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner, but that’s probably for the best.

After The Janson Directive, The Hollywood Reporter says the plan is for Vandebilt to co-write two more treatments for movies based on a couple of Ludlum books, though it’s not clear if they will include any of the three other aforementioned titles. They will help the cinematic universe take shape and other writers will be hired to turn the treatments into screenplays.

The appeal of a cinematic universe is obvious for a movie studio, but does Universal really need to link all of the Ludlum novels they had in development to create a larger cinematic world? Is there any narrative benefit beyond just having connective tissue between the movies? The trade mentions that the movies will have crossover points, which likely means certain characters will appear in several movies, perhaps even the main characters. Johnson is certainly excited about the prospect:

The Janson Directive is classic Robert Ludlum. Sharp, edgy and layered storylines. The character is complex, conflicted, bad ass and lethal — I can’t wait to sink my teeth into this and bring him to life. Between Jamie, Akiva, Captivate and Universal, it’s an exciting time to help produce and build out this awesome Ludlum universe.

Johnson is certainly a huge action star, but does he have the dramatic chops to pull off a role like this? After all, The Jason Bourne franchise had plenty of outstanding drama to go with the intense action. Frankly, I’m not entirely sure that Johnson could deliver the kind of nuanced, layered performance that Matt Damon has turned in and will reprise this summer. But not every main character needs to be like Jason Bourne, so it could work out just fine. Only time will tell.

Are you interested in a Robert Ludlum cinematic universe?

android-auto-waze

There were plenty of features announced at Google I/O yesterday regarding Android and some of those new things are meant for Android Auto - Google's car dashboard system. The most exciting of them is the fact that you will no longer need an Auto-enabled vehicle to be able to benefit from the simplified car-friendly interface while you're driving.

New Features

In the next few months, Android Auto will get several interesting additions. First is Waze compatibility with the app running on your dashboard and keeping you in the loop of hazards ahead and potential delays and problems. Second is OK Google hotwording which will activate voice commands when you say "OK Google" instead of requiring you to press a button to start listening.

Bubble Tea Served in Light Bulbs

For the light bulb(s)...

(Photo: News 163)

The rounded, almost spherical forms have a lot of aesthetic appeal. That's why Taiwan's latest café craze is bubble tea served in light bulbs.

Bubble tea, which is a tea-based drink that has balls of tapioca resting in the bottom, originated in Taiwan. Now that country is upheaving the tea game again by serving it in huge light bulbs. Rocket News 24 keeps us abreast of the development:

Perhaps hoping to jump on the trendy train, a Taiwanese bubble tea store is employing both good-looking women and an idea like a lightbulb going off over your head. [...]

Instead of regular plastic cups, this bubble tea is served in a gigantic lightbulb. It’s a bit unclear whether these are repurposed bulbs or brand new lightbulbs without filaments, but these drinks are definitely getting some light shined on them.

Great Job, Internet!: Defeat the Donald and make video games great again with Trumptendo

by B.G. Henne

Some of us are still holding out, but the writing’s on the wall. Donald Trump is going to be our next president (at least until he assumes the title of “Generalissimo Para La Vida”). That means that we could soon be getting tax breaks for ordering Trump Steaks. The Donald’s megalomaniacal vision and over-the-top antagonism of his rivals (and non-supporters) inspired artist Jeff Hong to liken Trump’s role in American discourse to that of 1980s Nintendo game bosses.

Speaking with The Creators Project, Hong quickly made the connection to the games of his youth. “He isn’t far off that from being one of these video game characters bent on world domination,” said the artist. It doesn’t hurt that Trump’s physical appearance perfectly combines King Koopa’s stooped posture, the swagger of every opponent in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, and the giant head and tiny ...

‘Son of Zorn’ and ‘Making History’ Trailers: Phil Lord & Chris Miller Have More Laughs for TV

by Ethan Anderton

Son of Zorn Trailer

Phil Lord & Chris Miller have effectively worked their magic on the big screen with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street (and its equally as good sequel) and The LEGO Movie. But on the small screen, they’ve also delivered great comedy with Clone High and Last Man on Earth. Now they’re bringing even more laughs to TV with two new series.

Son of Zorn and Making History couldn’t be more different, but both have Lord & Miller’s trademark comedy and promise of something great. Watch the Making History and Son of Zorn trailer after the jump.

Making History

A time travel comedy in the hands of Lord & Miller? Yes, please! Add Happy Endings star Adam Pally to the mix, and you’ve got the makings of a spectacular comedy. Of course, the big question is just how will time travel be treated on the show. Since the series focuses on Dan Chambers (Pally) trying to repair changes he may have made in the 1700s that could alter the outcome of the American Revolution, why aren’t we seeing the ramifications in present day? Lord & Miller are the kind of executive producers who would think of stuff like that, so I’m sure there’s some kind of explanation.

If the show lasts longer than one season, I’m hoping any future seasons will go to different time periods. Though there’s a chance that might happen in the first season anyway. We’ll just have to tune in to find out.

Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Lego Movie,” “21 Jump Street”), and written by Julius “Goldy” Sharpe (“The Grinder,” FAMILY GUY), the new comedy MAKING HISTORY follows three friends from two different centuries as they try to balance the thrill of time travel with the mundane concerns of their present-day lives.

Two shows in one, it’s both a rollicking historical adventure, and a contemporary comedy about love, friendship and trying to fit in to an increasingly complex and impersonal world. DAN CHAMBERS (Adam Pally, “The Mindy Project,” “Happy Endings”), a computer science professor at a small Massachusetts college, recently discovered time travel and has been transporting himself back to the 1700s to spend time with the colonial woman he’s fallen for. In the present, Dan is an unpopular nerd. But by claiming song lyrics, lines from movies and stand-up bits as his own in the 18th century, he’s absolutely hilarious – he gets the girl and makes friends. But Dan’s actions in the past are messing up the present. That woman he’s dating is not just any woman. She’s Paul Revere’s daughter, DEBORAH (Leighton Meester, “Gossip Girl”), and Dan’s meddling in the past causes her father to delay his famous ride, which may have altered the outcome of the entire American Revolution. To set matters right, Dan enlists the help of his colleague, CHRIS PARISH (Yassir Lester, “Girls,” “Key and Peele”), a brilliant, polished and popular history professor, who’s now given the incredible opportunity to actually live the history he teaches. Can Dan, Chris and Deborah save America as we know it? Can a woman from 1775 adapt to life in 2016? Can the three intrepid time travelers improve the past, help the helpless, fight for justice and get rich?

Making History premieres on Sundays, but not until the midseason begins in 2017.

Son of Zorn

Take He-Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and your average sitcom, throw them into a mixer, and you’ve got the promising new series Son of Zorn. Blending animation and the real world, the series follows the fantasy hero Zorn (voice of Jason Sudeikis), the Defender of Zephyria, Conqueror of the tribes of Agon, decapitator of the dark herdsmen of Grith, as he attempts to live a normal life in suburbia. Zorn is struggling to connect with his son, hates his ex-wife’s new boyfriend and has a falcon for his steed.

Not only is the concept hilarious itself, but I love seeing how the animated elements of the show interact with the real world components. The short-lived Fox series Sit Down, Shut Up used real world backgrounds with animated characters and objects, but a network comedy in this style where there’s a chief animated character among real life actors hasn’t been done before.

Featuring the voice of Jason Sudeikis (THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, “Horrible Bosses,” “We’re the Millers”), SON OF ZORN is a new hybrid live-action/animated comedy about an animated warrior from a faraway island in the Pacific Ocean – where everything and everyone is animated – who returns to Orange County, CA, to win back his live-action ex-wife and teenage son. ZORN (Sudeikis), the Defender of Zephyria, Conqueror of the tribes of Agon, decapitator of the dark herdsmen of Grith, has fought in countless epic battles throughout his life, but may find the greatest challenge of all when travels back to suburbia to reconnect with his family.

Once there, Zorn finds himself estranged from his son, ALANGULON or just “Alan” (Johnny Pemberton, “21 Jump Street”), a 17-year-old with a mellow, P.C. attitude; and Alan’s mother, Zorn’s ex-wife, EDIE (Cheryl Hines, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), a former wild child now living the life of an upper middle class mom. Zorn’s efforts to win them back are complicated by the fact that Edie is now engaged to CRAIG (Tim Meadows, “Saturday Night Live”), an online psychology professor and a stable presence in their lives. Nevertheless, to be a good dad, Zorn commits to remaining in Orange County for the long haul, renting an apartment and even working in the exciting field of industrial soap sales under his boss, LINDA (Artemis Pebdani, “Scandal,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), who likes his passion, but just wants him to rein it in at the office. As he adjusts to life in the suburbs, Zorn is the classic fish out of water, navigating his way through fatherhood, divorce and a boring office job. Sure, as an overlord of pain, he defeated glombeasts, wolf-bats and bloodthirsty arachnobots, but now he’ll go toe-to-toe with a new set of enemies: meter maids, dress codes and the DMV.

Son of Zorn premieres on Sundays this fall.
