The Best/Most Hilarious War Contraptions Created in 'Besiege'

Pete Mecum

I shit my pants.

Imagine a game that combined the creativity of Minecraft, the meticulous engineering/physics of Kerbal Space Program, and the core gameplay mechanic of Angry Birds and you'll begin to understand Besiege, an early-access PC game that has inspired users to create outlandish antiquated war machines. Here's a rundown of some of the more... unique builds we've come across so far.

Terraria Otherworld Is Not Terraria 2 But Kind Of Is

by Alec Meer
Pete Mecum

Shut up and take my money!

Why didn't they call it TerraRPG?

Ooh, you don’t see many spin-offs these days. Oh, right, Better Call Saul. Well, not in games. Oh, right, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. Look, OK, c’mon, just go with me here. It’s pretty unusual for a game series to divert into a spin-off rather than climb aboard the sequel treadmill. Side-on buildy/survival hit Terraria is doing just that however, with an RPG-inclined follow-up known Terraria: Otherworld. It’s set in an “alternate dimension” to Terraria prime and everything. Take a look below.

By the Power of Grayskull, What’s Going On?

by Steve Napierski

Thanks, Internets.

I've watched the original music video of "Heyyeyaaeyaaaeyaeyaa (Fabulous Secret Powers)" starring Prince Adam. Seeing as the video has over 50 millions views, I'm willing to bet a lot of you have, as well. But when I saw this live action recreation of it this morning, I knew I had to share it. Enjoy!

OH...I included the original beefcake animation below, just in case.

Oh Godus, What The Hell’s Going On?

by John Walker
Pete Mecum

lolololol

Hey, remember Godus?! It was successfully Kickstarted in 2012, despite launching with no video at all, as the name of “Peter Molyneux” still carried enough currency to raise over half a million pounds for his return to the god game genre. Just over two years have gone by, and mobile free-to-play versions of the game launched last year, but what state is the PC development in now? Molyneux has announced that he’s now working on a new project, a mobile thing called The Trial, suggesting Godus is no longer his focus. And the team currently working on the game have recently acknowledged that they, “simply can’t see us delivering all the features promised on the kickstarter page.” Uh oh.

Over $57 Million Paid Out To Steam Workshop Creators

by Alice O'Connor
Pete Mecum

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It's the Steam logo.

$57 million US is a lot of money. So’s $58 million, but I mention $57m specifically because that’s how much Valve have paid out since 2011 to folks who made and sold in-game items for their games. It’s over $57 million dollars from hats, knives, guns, staves, and swords across TF2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. And those last two games only sell cosmetic items. And that’s after Valve have taken their cut. Crumbs!

Now non-Valve games can join in. The first games opening up a ‘curated’ Steam Workshop bringing items to sale are Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Dungeon Defenders Eternity.

Another Way to Defeat Diamond Dog

I love it!

Supergamerk sent me this video of a battle with Diamond Dog in EarthBound. It starts out normal but ends in a silly way:

I wonder if this would be useful for speedrunners in some way, or if there’s a quicker way to beat Diamond Dog.

Cardboard Children – Game of the Year 2014

by Robert Florence
Pete Mecum

A CHESTBURSTER card, yes! I want to play this!

Hello youse.

I’m here to tell you about what I think is the best game released in 2014. We will call this column the “GAME OF THE YEAR 2014” column, to get that idea across. A good idea, I think. Anyway – this was a game I played very late in 2014, but it made a huge first impression on me. And then I played it again, in a different way, and I was BLOWN CLEAN OUT OF MY BOOTS. At this point, there is no doubt in my mind – this is the best new game I played in 2014. And that game’s name?

Wot I Think: Ziggurat

by Adam Smith
Pete Mecum

This image makes me happy for some reason...

Along with the shattering of New Year’s Resolutions, each January contains the solidification of Previous Year’s Regrets. My regrets are mostly about money and beer, but a few gaming-related horrors have arisen over the last couple of weeks. The Talos Principle was the first – a game I should have played as soon as it was available rather than waiting until Christmas. Now I’m adding Ziggurat to the list of regrets. I spotted it before release but didn’t get round to playing until now.

It’s the closest thing to a first-person Binding of Isaac I’ve ever played.

A Decade of Love and Hate

by Steve Napierski
Pete Mecum

I have been enjoying the pet battles. :D

A Decade of Love and Hate Has it really been that long? Man...World of Warcraft was originally released on November 23, 2004 and during that time I have never once played the game. I will be completely honest, I haven't even been in the same room while someone else was playing World of Warcraft, either.

So I hope you guys enjoy this comic, because it doesn't really mean much to me. Just being honest here.

CGI Blooper GIFs From These 5 Animated Films Will Haunt Your Nightmares

Pete Mecum

WHY!?!?!

Despite what you may have learned from Source Filmmaker shorts on the internet, making a 3D animated movie is really hard work. Between the different layers, renderings, and simulations, it's easy for an entertaining romp to become a cthuloid nightmare thanks to a single glitch. Here's what happens when things go terribly, TERRIBLY wrong:

Have You Played… Call Of Juarez Gunslinger?

by Alice O'Connor
Pete Mecum

Yes, it's good.

Bang bang.

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

As an accomplished and habitual liar, I take pride in my art and follow a simple rule: if you’re going to lie to someone, at least make it entertaining for them. So, dear video games, I’m not impressed when you set up an unreliable narrator to reveal gasp I’m dead or gasp I’m the killer or gasp something something metaphysics. Call of Juarez Gunslinger‘s turns me into a gunfighter blowing away a dozen outlaws in the blink of an eye with my twin revolvers. Ayup, that’ll do nicely.

Alpha Dog: Star Citizen Update Triples Its Playable Ships

by Alec Meer
Pete Mecum

I wish Elite:Dangerous had more ships.

The latter half of December belongs to Elite: Dangerous, but despite being perfectly gracious about that, Chris Roberts’ rival space game Star Citizen has made a play for a little pre-Christmas action. Its Arena Commander playable module has had a big, fat ‘1.0’ attached to it, and apparently triples how many ships you can burn money on fly. It’s billed as “the most significant update” yet to the playable aspect of Star Citizen.

Elite Dangerous Is Out, Here Are Our Review Plans

by Graham Smith
Pete Mecum

EVERYONE PLAY THIS

Elite: Dangerous is out! Perhaps it’s just me, but isn’t it weird to live in a world where that’s not a bigger deal? Oh, I’m looking forward to getting in there and having a proper play, certainly. But the alpha and the beta and the gamma have been around for months, and somehow it feels like an anti-climax given the long, chilly decades of longing for a new Elite game that preceded it.

This’ll be Half-Life 3 one day. In the meantime, let me tell you about our review plans.

Bowling, Basketball And Bugs: Starbound’s Winter Update

by Adam Smith
Pete Mecum

Looks like they overhauled a few things and added a whole bunch of new content. I'll have to take another look at this.

What do you add to the game that has everything? Starbound’s procedural approach to space makes every planet a unique snowflake in an infinite sea of stars. Evidently, developers Chucklefish don’t think that’s enough and the next hefty update contains all manner of new content. There’s bowling, basketball bug catching, a new playable race, personal ship AI that can take on the appearance of a doltish golden horse, ship upgrades, a new tech system and loads of other bits and pieces. The video below shows all manner of new stuff and has managed to convince me that reinstalling when this goes live would be a fine idea.

The Bestest Best Exploration Of 2014: Salt

by RPS
Pete Mecum

I have not heard of Salt.

Salt has been a real treat this year – a real alternative. Where survival games have (rightly) mostly focused on intense difficulty, Salt put its emphasis on just idling about. And that’s a fantastic thing to have in the mix. Even in its early alpha form, with minimal goings-on, it’s still the most pleasant exploration I’ve had this year, and that makes it Bestest.

Have You Played… Half-Life?

by Graham Smith
Pete Mecum

HAVE YOU?!?!

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

You read the headline and the tea spurts from your mouth. “Have I pla–!?” Half-Life! The gall of it! To suggest that not every PC owner has already experienced Valve’s formative first-person shooter. The frivolity of it! To give space to those who have might enjoy reminiscing or celebrating a game long loved but no longer frequently discussed.

I know – I’m just a mess about it myself.

Mother: Cognitive Dissonance 2.0 Released

by Mato
Pete Mecum

FANGAME!

At long last, the upgraded version of the popular “Cognitive Dissonance” EarthBound fangame is complete! Here’s a quick description of the game:

It takes place between the first and second games in the series: after Giegue’s first defeat yet before Ness’s adventure.

It tells a story of Giegue’s descent into madness and the wandering band of aliens who once protected the Apple of Enlightenment, in a chapter-based format similar to Mother 3.

This newly revised and rebuilt edition includes mountains of overhauled graphics, an original soundtrack, and many new and expanded areas to explore.

You can download the game here and see the trailer video here:

You can also share info, tips, and questions about the game here, as well as fan art!

Wot I Think: Tales From The Borderlands Ep One

by Adam Smith
Pete Mecum

Hmm... maybe I'll check this out.

Tales From The Borderlands Episode One is the funniest adventure game Telltale have released in years. Given that The Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us are the most recent offerings that might not seem like such a big deal. Throw in Back to the Future alongside those two and the average number of decent jokes actually goes down.

But Borderlands would stand out as a winner in any company and you don’t need to know, or be amused by, Gearbox’ games to enjoy it.
