The Family Album Of Lucybelle Crater

by Zeon Santos

Photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard spent the better part of the 50s and 60s putting together this apocalyptic family portrait series, using his own family members as the subjects in a creepy collection that was way ahead of its time.

His wife wore an old hag mask and played the role of Lucybelle Crater, while other friends and family members donned masks and played along, creating the kind of family portraits only the Manson family could love.

The entire Family Album of Lucybelle Crater was collected in book form in 1974, two years after Meatyard's death, and I can’t help but wonder how many people received the book as a gift or bought a copy on a recommendation, then found the whole thing too disturbing to keep in the house!

Thomas Card Documents Tokyo Street Style

by Zeon Santos

Tokyo’s Harajuku district is known as the place to go if you want to see outrageous street fashions and uniquely Japanese counterculture movements, and even those who are in the know can’t seem to keep up with all the iterations of style which are constantly appearing in this most fashionable district.

Photographer Thomas Card travelled to Japan one year after the tsunami devastation to document some cutting edge Japanese street styles for his book Tokyo Adorned, but unlike previous photo series featuring Harajuku style Card’s series documents the subjects in front of a white background, so their crazy clothes and accessories can take center stage.

There are so many different elements to their outfits that it may take a second or third look to see it all, and can you imagine how long it takes them to get dressed?

A Terrifying Robot That Will Gyrate Her Way Into Your Nightmares

by Zeon Santos

(Video Link)

Robots can build cars, take a spin on Mars and generally do some pretty cool stuff, but are we already running out of ideas for uses?

You might assume that if you saw this gyrating robot dancer doing her hypnotic hip sway for them and didn’t know the back story, but this scary robo-gal is an art installation created strictly for entertainment purposes by Jordan Wolfson in conjunction with special effects studio Spectral Motion, and not necessarily the next step in robotic evolution.

So maybe she isn't the future of robo-tech, but it looks like Chuck E. Cheese is about to get a sexy new stripper to add to his animatronic band!

Nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box, as Looped by Kawehi

by Alex Santoso
Missteenwordpower

all about nirvana lately

YouTube Link - via Esquire

We've covered Hawaiian-born musician Kawehi a while ago on Neatorama, so we're glad that she's back! This time, Kawehi takes her looping-technique to cover Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box." That's pretty good!

If you like that, check out the rest of her music videos, then head over to her Facebook page:

The Way You Make Me Feel (by Michael Jackson):

Criminal (by Britney Spears):

Closer (by NIN):

Payphone (by Maroon 5):

This one, titled I'd Never Tell, captures the looping method in a clever visual form:

Don't forget to check out Kawehi's official blog.

Chatterbox: The Internet Is Talking About Gravity Waves and Gay St. Patrick's Day Shenanigans

by Paul Constant

Getting Their Irish Up: A gay float crashed Boston's anti-gay St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Big Science News! The existence of gravity gravitational waves has been confirmed, which validates the Big Bang Theory.

The Dark Side of YouTube: "Over the last few days, allegations of sexual abuse and emotional manipulation have surfaced in the YouTube community."

No Sympathy for the Carpetbagger: Former MA Senator (and future candidate for NH Senator) Scott Brown gets rough treatment from Fox News. This is delightful to watch.

Best GIFs Ever: Colossal's blog post exhibit of David Szakaly's optical illusion GIFs is a treat for the eyes.

William S. Burroughs Teaches Writing: Go to Open Culture to learn more.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! This video is older than dirt and has been on Slog many times, but it's also absolutely wonderful. If I had to choose two minutes of video to send into outer space to prove that human civilization existed and was worthwhile, I think it might be this:

Rare Photos From The Rothschild Illuminati Ball In 1972

by Zeon Santos

The Rothschilds are one of the wealthiest families in the world, and they were known for throwing wicked costume parties back in the day, with only the most famous and distinguished guests in attendance.

However, very few photos have surfaced from their decadent soirees, and those photos which have been released reveal how the one percent get their party on.

In 1972 Baron Guy De Rothschild and his wife Marie-Helene hosted a Surreal Face themed party at the Chateau de Ferrieres, where their famous guests, including Salvador Dali and Audrey Hepburn, were asked to wear "black tie, long dresses and surrealists heads".

The guests didn't disappoint, arriving with wildly decorated heads and austere garb, but it seems all the crazy facepaint and liquor in the world couldn’t liven up such a stiff crowd!

Nirvana Goes Grunge-stafarian?

by Mike Nipper
Missteenwordpower

I can't stop listening to this!

Holy blue beat balls of Babylon! I just discovered reggae artist Little Roy's entire 2011 album of Nirvana covers, Battle for Seattle, today!!! Hmmm. I'm not so good at reggae, so I think I should present this to you without personal comment. See, I remember life in the early '90s during the ascension of Dread Zeppelin and I've yet to recover. So, it's up to y'all, the fine folks of Slog Out™, to judge whether this is YEAH or MEH.

I haven't heard the entire album, but if y'all enjoyed Roy's version of "Come As You Are," you might also enjoy his versions of "Sliver/Dive" and "Heart Shaped Box."

Lights Out

by Miss Cellania

(vimeo link)

Warning: watch this scary film in the daylight, or at least not just before bed. Lights Out, a short film by  David Sandberg, illustrates the difference between old-fashioned Hitchcock-style suspense and whatever the newer special-effects-dependent horror films are called. Gorefests, maybe? You don’t need all that, because the scariest thing you'll ever encounter is your imagination. This story won Sandberg the Best Director award in the Who’s There? Horror Challenge.  -via Daily of the Day

War Drags You Out: World Political Figures Made into Drag Queens

by Alex Santoso

Vladdy Pushin' (1952)

Inspired after attending a drag show for the first time, Saint Hoax decided to deconstruct the "recipe" of making an iconic queen and came up with the following:

1- Flamboyant name
2- Fierce persona
3- Defining outfits
4- Personalized hairdo
5- A trademark feature
6- One hell of a PR team

Noting the similarity between that and what it takes to craft a political image, Saint Hoax decided to apply the techniques to do make-overs of some of the world's most famous (and infamous) political figures in the art series War Drags You Out:

I then realized that it takes that same exact effort to make a leader.
A rush of images containing Hitler's mustache, Bin laden's headgear, Obama's campaigns, Saddam's narcism crossed through my mind. It got me thinking that behind every "great" man, there's a queen.

Like drag queens, political/religious leaders are expected to entertain, perform and occasionally lip-sync a public speech.  But unlike drag queens, the fame hungry leaders don't know when to take their costumes off.

A True Detective Fan Site Worthy Of The Show

by Zeon Santos

The new hit show True Detective features stellar performances by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and a gritty noir inspired storyline, but what the show doesn't have is a website that makes fans wanna yell "alright alright alright!"- until now.

A fan site created by Nigel Evan Dennis recently launched called We Keep The Other Bad Men From The Door, and this fun "updated graphic tribute to HBO's True Detective" is full of information on the characters, clues and a detailed map of Louisiana showing where the events in each episode take place, among other things True Detective.

But be forewarned- the site contains spoilers, so if you aren't caught up on the show you might not want to visit the site just yet.

Oreo Cheesecake Layer Cake

by Erica

I celebrated my birthday this week, and while I started this blog as a girl in my early twenties, I’m now sitting comfortably in the “late-twenties” slot. Turns out Monday isn’t the most exciting day to have a birthday, so this year I’ve resorted to continually celebrating throughout the week as consolation to myself. Happy hour on Monday, potluck dinner on Tuesday, work party with cake yesterday, and possibly treating myself to a manicure later today. I’m sharing this monster of a cake today in honor of my birthday, but this cake was actually made for a co-resident back in January for his birthday. We have a tradition in our program where the first years are paired up with the second years for seeing orthodontic patients together, and whenever it’s your partner’s birthday, you’re in charge of providing their cake. Usually people bring in fancy store-bought creations, but I knew I wanted to take on the task of making a special birthday treat for Aaron on my own. He got me a delicious carrot cake (with cream cheese frosting, duh) for my birthday this week, but for him I knew it should be chocolate, and tons and tons of chocolate is what he got.

Oreo layer cake 5429 copy

If you’ve been following my blog for awhile you’ll remember the Red Velvet Cheesecake Layer Cake I made my Mom for her birthday a few years ago. It was 2 layers of red velvet cake sandwiched around a layer of creamy cheesecake, frosted in more cream cheese. This cake today is the same idea – 2 layers of rich chocolate cake (my favorite go-to chocolate cake recipe) stacked with a thick layer of cookies and cream cheesecake and slathered in cookies and cream frosting. The smell of this cake alone put me in heaven. I just loooove Oreos! And I somehow managed to sneak in an entire package of Oreos into this cake via the cheesecake, buttercream, and decorations. The frosting might not have turned out as pretty as I had hoped (murky gray wasn’t really what I was going for), but I felt better after hearing that most people at work were convinced that the cake was from a bakery. Plus the taste was divine, and clearly the frosting wasn’t so bad because I couldn’t keep my fingers out of the leftovers!

Oreo layer cake 5430 copy

There are quite a few steps to making this cake, but the intricacies of it all are definitely apparent in the final product, and worth the extra time. I chose a simple decorating technique to keep things simple, and amenable to messiness, so if your edges aren’t perfect either go ahead and throw some extra Oreo crumbs on the sides too. You could cut some major corners by using a boxed chocolate cake mix here instead, but this chocolate cake recipe I used below is so easy, it’s almost worth making it from scratch just to say you did. Break up the baking to a few days so it’s not so bad, and get ready to make the Oreo-lover in your life very, very happy!

Oreo Cheesecake Layer Cake

Yield: 1 8" cake

Ingredients:

for the cookies and cream cheesecake layer:

20 oz cream cheese, at room temperature
3/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 tbsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1/2 cup sour cream
7 Oreo cookies, chopped

for the chocolate cake layers:

1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cups cocoa powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs, at room temperature
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup hot coffee

for the cookies and cream frosting:

3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
4 oz cream cheese
1 tsp vanilla extract
3-1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 tbsp milk
1 cup whipped cream or Cool Whip
15 Oreo cookies, crushed

for assembly:

8 Oreo cookies, cut in half
1/2 cup whipped cream or Cool Whip
Crushed oreo crumbs for decoration

Directions:

for the cookies and cream cheesecake layer:

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line the bottom of an 8" springform pan with parchment paper and wrap the bottom half of the pan in tinfoil. In the bowl of an electric mixer beat the cream cheese until smooth and fluffy, then slowly add the sugar. Beat in the vanilla and salt until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, scraping down the sides between each addition and beating well. Mix in the sour cream and gently fold in the chopped Oreos.

Place springform pan into a larger pan and pour boiling water until it comes up halfway up the sides of the springform pan. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until the center is just set. Remove pan from water and allow it to cool for 20 minutes. Run a knife around the edge of the pan and set aside to cool completely. Remove outer ring of pan, leaving the bottom piece, wrap cheesecake with plastic wrap, and store in the freezer until ready to assemble.

for the chocolate cake layers:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare you 8″ cake rounds by greasing and flouring them. Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl until well combined.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla and beat until well mixed. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet. With the mixer still on low, add the coffee and stir just to combine. The batter will be very thin, don't worry!

Split the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool in pans for 30 minutes, then turn onto a cooling rack to cool completely. Level the cakes with a serrated knife if necessary. You can wrap the layers in plastic wrap and store in the freezer until ready to use. (Storing in the fridge will dry the cakes out)

for the cookies and cream frosting:

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together the butter and cream cheese for 2-3 minutes, until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and continue beating. Reduce the mixer's speed to low and slowly add the powdered sugar. Once incorporated, add the milk and increase the speed to medium. Beat for another 1-2 minutes until smooth. Turn off the mixer and gently fold in the whipped cream and crushed Oreos with a rubber spatula.

for assembly:

Place one layer of the chocolate cake down onto a cake round, or the plate you intend on serving the cake on. Cover layer with a thin layer of frosting, then place the cheesecake layer on top. Spread another thin layer of frosting and place the second chocolate cake layer on top. Cover the entire cake with a thin layer of frosting and place in the fridge for about 10 minutes to allow your crumb coat to set. Once set, cover the cake with another layer until the edges are fully covered and smooth.

Sprinkle Oreo crumbs onto the top of the cake. Load whipped cream into a piping bag with a large star tip and pipe evenly spaced dollops around the outer edge. Top each dollop with a halved Oreo. If your cheesecake layer was frozen for storage, allow the cake to sit out on the counter for an hour or in the fridge overnight to thaw. I actually froze the entire cake in a cake box once completed and took it down the night before and the consistency was perfect.

In Case Y'all Perhaps Wondered Where Pharrell Sourced "Happy"

by Mike Nipper

Whod thunk it, this is ALSO named Happy!
  • nipsh
  • Who'd thunk it, this is ALSO named "Happy!"

Pharrell Williams' massive hit "Happy," like his assist on Robin Thicke's creeper song "Blurred Lines," wasn't exactly the product of Williams' singular soulful genius; I reckon everyone knows "Lines" was a contemporary rewrite of a well-known Marvin Gaye song, "Got to Give It Up." Well, in the same manner "Lines" was appropriated, "Happy" was also nicked. In this instance Pharrell chose to rewrite a more obscure late-'70s B-side by Velvet Hammer. As far as I've seen on teh internets/paper, Pharrell takes full writer credit for "Happy." I can only reckon another a preempitve lawsuit is looming.

The original song, a cool crossover track, was co-written by none other than Andre "Anybody Got A Raw Egg" Williams. The group Velvet Hammer was first a studio group Williams put together in Detroit in 1967, THEN reactivated in Chicago in 1977. They had an album, Call Me!, of disco and funk. Their jams were solid period get down/get on it kinda jams like "Whip Your Booty!" The album is good and was even reissued in 2001 as Whip Your Booty on Soul-Tay-Shus. Both versions of "Happy" now share opposite sides of a 45 on the Originals label. Uh...I'm not sure if the single is a perfectly legit, but there you go. Currently, original copies of both the OG Velvet Hammer 45 AND the promo 45 issue of Pharrell's "Happy" rate about $200 a copy.

Zombies Have Breached the Ivory Tower of Academia

by Alex Santoso

Zombies from World War Z

Like that scene from World War Z, the relentless horde of the undead has breached the walls of the ivory tower of academia and is now feasting on the brainiest of humans.

"It is clearly now acceptable to study zombies seriously," said Kyle Bishop of Southern Utah University's English department. Bishop, now the chairman of the department, has used zombies to conduct academic research. He turned his dissertation into an academic treatise called American Zombie Gothic: The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of the Walking Dead in Popular Culture.

According to Erica Phillips of The Wall Street Journal, there are now 20 new scholarly books with "zombie" in the title or topic category. JSTOR, an online archive of academic journals, reported that there are 39 articles featuring the undead since 2005, versus 7 in the preceeding 10 years.

Cal State Northridge economics professor Glen Whitman is working on the "Economics of the Undead," in which he explored the issues of the use of resources in an apocalyptic event. Professor Robert J. Smith? (yes, the question mark is part of his name - don't ask) of the Department of Mathematics and Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa has written a mathematical paper on how humanity could survive a zombie outbreak.

Similarly, colleges are offering more and more courses on zombies. Philosophy professor Christopher Moreman of California State University, East Bay, has taught a class in which students examine Buddhist imagery in zombie movies, which reflect the religion's meditation on mortality.

Warning Zombies Inside Wall Decals from the NeatoShop's Zombie Shop

There is a backlash from other academics, who considered the zombie trend as ominous. "They end up invariably turning their attention away from the tradition," said English professor Mark Bauerlein who also penned the book "The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future." Nevertheless, zombie scholars defend their subject of study as a valid one given the preponderance of the living dead as a theme in human history and its ubiquity in modern literature and culture.

Carl Kasell Is Retiring

Missteenwordpower

Carl Kasell FOREVER!!!

You might as well pour poison in your ears and call it a day. My favorite velvet-voiced newsman is leaving the biz:

Carl Kasell, the famed voice of NPR News for three decades turned comedy star of Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, has announced he's stepping down this spring after a five-decade career in broadcasting. Kasell will record his final broadcast for Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! this spring; celebration shows are planned in the show's home city of Chicago, and in Washington, D.C.

He'll still do the voice-mail prizes for Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, thankfully.

Beautiful Wood Automaton Simulates a Drop of Rain

by John Farrier

This mesmerizing object is an automaton made by Dean O'Callaghan. It's designed to look like a drop of rain hitting a pool of water. As he turns the crank, concentric rings of water emanate from the center. O'Callaghan attributes the idea to sculptor Reuben Margolin.

Nick Cave Creates Armor For Artists

by Zeon Santos

Nick Cave is a performance artist, dancer and sculptor who creates wearable artworks called Sound Suits which "change the wearer’s relationship to gravity, and alter one’s physical interactions with the world".

Nick's works are complex, edgy and just a bit off, and though they may seem like giant mascot costumes created by a guy who has taken one too many tabs of acid there’s actually an interesting, and political, message behind these chaotic looking full body sculptural suits.

Nick was inspired to create his first suit in 1992 after hearing about the Rodney King beating, so he started exploring ways an artist could be protected against violence while still expressing themselves freely with their art. The result is a suit of colorful armor for the performance artist that both protects the wearer and makes them feel like an otherworldly creature.

These amazing sound suits are currently on display at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston until May 4.

Cibo Matto: Purveyors of Lush Downtempo Pop

by Dave Segal

(Crocodile) Cibo Matto spent a chunk of the ’90s being perhaps the cutest purveyors of song-based, downtempo funk. Their sugary, quirky dance tunes somehow wormed their way into the hiphop-hipster hearts of the Grand Royal crowd, and core members Yuko Honda and Miho Hatari wound up moonlighting in that label’s raucous blues-funk-rock combo, Butter 08. After a long hiatus (their last full-length was 1999’s Stereo Type A), Japanese-American trio Cibo Matto have made a strong return to the recorded realm—sans the versatile Sean Ono Lennon—with Hotel Valentine. What little we’ve heard of it sounds more atmospheric and “mature,” but not in a dull way. Rather, the music’s more alluring and subtle, if not as danceable. The great reviews pouring in suggest that Cibo Matto still have that spunky Clinton-era charm in abundance. With Salt Cathedral.

Here's all our recommended music events—tonight, tomorrow, and beyond.
