Our Flag Means Death Trailer: Taika Waititi Is Blackbeard In HBO Max's Pirate Comedy Series

by Sandy Schaefer

If you could do with a bit of Taika Waititi-style silliness between now and the release of "Thor: Love and Thunder" (as well as whenever "Next Goal Wins" reaches theaters), then you may want to give "Our Flag Means Death" a look judging by the newly-unveiled official trailer. The HBO Max comedy series is based on the real-life exploits of Stede Bonnet, an 18th-century English-Barbadian aristocrat who one day decided to leave his life of comfort behind and take up a far more dangerous career as a buccaneer — albeit, an unusually polite one, earning him the moniker "The Gentleman Pirate."

Rhys Darby stars in "Our Flag Means Death" as the show's version of Bonnet, with Waititi co-starring as the notorious pirate Edward Teach, AKA Blackbeard, on top of serving as an executive producer and directing the series' first episode. Darby also played supporting roles in the critically-acclaimed Waititi-helmed comedies "What We Do in the Shadows" and "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," and will show up again in "Next Goal Wins." That being said, most people probably know him for portraying the jovial non-playable character (or NPC) Nigel Billingsley in "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and "The Next Level," as well as for his vocal acting on animated series like "Voltron: Legendary Defender" (where he voiced Coran).

Our Flag Means Death Trailer

"Our Flag Means Death" was created by David Jenkins ("People of Earth") and features a supporting cast full of actors that you've no doubt seen and/or heard one place or another in the past. Their ranks include "Saturday Night Live" alums Leslie Jones and Fred Armisen, as well as Nat Faxon ("Disenchantment"), Kristian Nairn (AKA Hodor from "Game of Thrones"), Rory Kinnear ("Penny Dreadful: City of Angels"), Ewen Bremner ("T2 Trainspotting"), and Samba Schutte ("Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order").

The show's official synopsis reads as follows:

The unique new comedy is loosely based on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby. After trading in his comfortable life for one of a buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of a pirate ship, but struggles to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew. Stede's fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi.

While I wouldn't say that every joke lands in the latest trailer, on the whole, "Our Flag Means Deaths" continues to look like a cheeky good time that recalls HBO's quirky cult hit "Flight of the Conchords" (a show that Waititi tellingly worked on as a director prior to becoming a household name). This new promo even includes some meta-humor about the world of streaming and how it's quickly becoming overrun with reboots and revivals of older properties — with Blackbeard complaining about "how hard it is to find someone doing something original" in the world of pirating. If only for that reason, I'm willing to give this irreverent swashbuckler a shot when it arrives.

"Our Flag Means Death" begins streaming on HBO Max on March 3, 2022.

The 14 Best Comedies You Can Watch On Netflix Right Now

by Audrey Fox

There's room for criticism when it comes to the curation of Netflix's library. The popular streaming service seems to deny the existence of films released before 1970, for example, and as the company invests more and more money into original content, it has slowly begun to neglect other areas.

But not comedy. Other genres aren't particularly well represented on the service, but comedy is alive and well on Netflix, with a multitude of different subgenres at the viewer's fingertips. Brutal satires and pitch black comedies; teen sex farces and sweet and charming rom-coms; big blockbuster hits and quirky arthouse favorites -- Netflix has plenty of options for those nights when you want to watch a movie, especially one that's going to let you shut your brain off and laugh. If you're looking for something funny on Netflix, the following 14 films are your best options.

Silver Linings Playbook

"Silver Linings Playbook" is a great choice if you're in the mood for some dark, subtle humor -- although it is frequently funny, it doesn't hit you over the head with its comedy. Bradley Cooper stars as Pat, a former high-school English teacher who has just moved back into his parents' house after spending time in a psychiatric institution to help process the revelation that his wife was cheating on him. He's probably not a danger to himself or others, but the man seems perpetually one or two bad days away from losing it, and he's hyper-focused on showing improvement in the vain hopes that he will be able to win back his wife.

Friend-of-a-friend Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) reluctantly agrees to help Pat if he promises to enter a dance competition with her. Slowly, the trajectory of Pat's ultimate plans and their developing relationship changes. Cooper and Lawrence have great chemistry together, and put in performances that would get "Silver Linings Playbook" a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, as well as a Best Actress Oscar for Jennifer Lawrence.

Not Another Teen Movie

The early '00s produced more raunchy genre parodies than anyone knew what to do with. The first "Scary Movie" is obviously the gold standard of these films (there are a lot of real stinkers), poking fun at teen slashers like "Scream," but "Not Another Teen Movie" does the same for the teen movies of the John Hughes variety, and gets a lot less credit.

That's a shame, because while it's a truly hodge-podge of a dozen different teen movies, "Not Another Teen Movie" manages to go for both the low-hanging fruit ("She's All That" features heavily) and some less obvious tropes (there's an entire subplot devoted to a guy who really wants to start a slow clap, but can't ever find the right moment). In a world of painfully bad parodies that clearly put the bare minimum of thought into what they're mocking, it's clear that "Not Another Teen Movie" has an affection for their source material. Also, it features a scene in which a young Chris Evans is clad only in whipped cream -- we can all probably agree that's worth the price of admission alone.

Stranger Than Fiction

It's such a nice feeling when actors who got their start on "Saturday Night Live" get an opportunity to take their talents to indie movies with a more offbeat sense of humor. Will Ferrell is funny when he's completely over the top, but he's equally interesting to watch in subtler, more nuanced roles.

That's what we get in "Stranger Than Fiction." Here, Ferrell plays Harold Crick, an IRS auditor who is perfectly content to have each day look exactly like the one that came before it. But his expertly structured, well-regimented life changes when one day Harold wakes up to learn, to his surprise, that he can hear a voiceover narration that describes his every action. Is he losing his mind, or is he merely a character in someone else's story? "Stranger Than Fiction" is rarely laugh-out-loud funny, but it's incredibly charming as Harold, realizing that he may not be an actual person, finally gives himself permission to live.

Yes, God. Yes

In the entire pantheon of high school comedies, there are relatively few that address the unique awkwardness of growing up evangelical in the United States. In mainstream cinema, "Saved" is the only one that comes to mind. But then came Karen Maine's directorial debut "Yes, God, Yes," starring Natalia Dyer from "Stranger Things," and our prayers were answered.

A perpetually horny teenage girl, Dyer's Alice has to learn how to navigate her own sexual curiosity while simultaneously attempting to overcome the years of shame and guilt drilled into her by her church. But when one of Alice's anonymous AOL chats gets racy and is discovered by her pastor, a whole new level of stress is introduced. Will they find out it was her? Is the fear of getting caught enough to stop her from giving in to temptation again?

"Yes, God, Yes" captures the overwhelming experience of high school bible retreats, filled with teenagers so sexually repressed they're all about to explode if they so much as accidentally touch hands. Predictably, hilarity ensues.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

When it comes to '80s high school comedies, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is pretty much iconic. It's the ultimate on-screen wish fulfillment: What kid didn't dream about skipping school, running off to have wild adventures with friends, and facing absolutely zero repercussions? Matthew Broderick wins hearts and minds immediately as Ferris Bueller -- beginning with his very first direct address to the camera, Ferris lets the audience in on his scam. We become willing co-conspirators.

This is a star-making performance for Broderick, who exhibits the kind of charisma that is utterly essential for this type of movie. If the audience thought that Ferris was smug or manipulative, the film wouldn't work. But because of Broderick, we buy into his whole schtick: all of the last-minute shenanigans and quick escapes, as well as his seemingly genuine belief that putting his anxiety-ridden buddy Cameron (Alan Ruck) through the ringer is helping him. And look, if you say that you weren't incredibly impressed by Ferris' intricate system for staying home sick, well, you're probably lying.

About Time

"About Time" is one of the more gentle comedies on this list. In fact, it's often pretty sad. When Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) turns 21, his father lets him in on the family secret: All the men in their family have the ability to travel to specific points in their own timeline. All they have to do is go to a dark place, close their eyes, and think about where they want to travel. And boom! There they are.

At first, Tim uses his powers for purely selfish reasons, trying to get a do-over after royally screwing up an encounter with a girl he's interested in. But as the years go by, Tim learns how to use his powers in a way that enriches his life without holding it hostage. "About Time" is a genuinely sweet, good-natured film completely reliant on the relationship between Tim and his loving father (played by Bill Nighy). Silly rom-com hijinks give way to moments of genuine poignancy, as Tim learns that there are limits to what his abilities can do, especially once he has a child -- traveling back in time to before her birth puts her entire existence at risk. Director and writer Richard Curtis has always known how to make sentimental romances, and "About Time" is perhaps one of his very best.

8. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is a wildly imaginative action comedy that embodies the spirit of a graphic novel better than most Marvel or DC fare. It stars Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, a young slacker who falls hard for Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a manic pixie dream girl with great hair. There's only one catch: Before Scott can get the girl, he has to defeat every single one of her seven evil exes, a task that becomes increasingly more challenging the closer he gets to accomplishing his goal.

Director Edgar Wright creates a vivid, heightened version of reality in which Ramona's emotional barriers and Scott's deep-seated insecurities combine to create villains that feel more like video game bosses than actual flesh-and-blood humans. "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" didn't make a tremendous impact when it was first released, but it has since undergone a serious reappraisal, and is respected both for its creativity and the fact that it served as a launching pad for the careers of actors like Brie Larson, Chris Evans, and Aubrey Plaza.

Hail, Caesar!

There are precisely six words that make "Hail, Caesar!" one of the Coen brothers' most unexpectedly funny films: "Would that it were so simple." Set during Hollywood's Golden Age, "Hail, Caesar!" revolves around a taciturn and mysterious man, Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), who works as a fixer for all the major studios. When a pretty young starlet ends up in the family way without a ring on her finger, Mannix is there to do damage control. When a handsome but empty-headed actor inadvertently gets caught up in a communist ring, Mannix handles things.

The old studio system required a slavish devotion to the carefully constructed personas developed for the studio's stars, and even the smallest step out of line could cause serious problems. Although other Coen brothers films are better regarded, "Hail, Caesar!" stands out for its incredible ensemble cast. Arguably no directors have better understood how to use Channing Tatum's unique talents to the fullest -- and if nothing else, the Coens are responsible for bringing us the cowboy Hobie Doyle, played by Alden Ehrenreich in one of his first major roles.

The Edge Of Seventeen

When we look at the history of teen comedies, it is shocking how many of them revolve around teenage boys. Even the ones that highlight teen girls don't really seem to understand them or take them seriously. As such, "The Edge of Seventeen" is striking in that it shows us how much we've been missing -- it's a (somewhat) raunchy teen comedy whose hero is just a horny, hyper-relatable 16-year-old girl named Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld, just a few short years after her Oscar-nominated performance in "True Grit").

Nadine has never been particularly great at connecting with people, and when her only friend (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating Nadine's brother, Nadine goes a little haywire. "The Edge of Seventeen" brings to life all of the agonizing, cringe-inducing parts of being a teenager, but it never makes Nadine the butt of the joke. Funny, moving, and unusually well-acted, "The Edge of Seventeen" picks up the baton that "Easy A" carried for years and runs with it.

Election

When you watch "Election," a film released relatively early in Reese Witherspoon's career, you begin to realize how few directors have ever used her effectively. On the surface, Witherspoon is a bubbly blonde, intelligent in her own way but generally more interested in embodying the role of the cinematic social butterfly. But, when pressed, Witherspoon can go so far beyond that stereotype, and her performance in "Election" is proof.

In the film, Witherspoon plays Tracy Flick, a hyper-ambitious, Machiavellian high school student who is determined to become student body president by any means necessary. The darkness of the storyline (and there are parts where it gets pretty grim, especially the relationship between Tracy and the school's social studies teacher, played by Matthew Broderick) contrasts sharply with the light touch of Witherspoon's performance, all of which helps to make "Election" a biting satire of high school politics for the ages.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

Realistically, the entire "Austin Powers" franchise could be on this list. As parodies of goofy, misogynistic spy thrillers, each one is clever and well-executed. Because they're thoroughly rooted in crude humor and cheap gags, they've never quite gotten the credit they deserve, but when you watch the "Austin Powers" movies two full decades after their initial release, they hold up surprisingly well (although that impression is no doubt aided by the warm glow of '90s nostalgia).

While they all have their merits, "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" is the best of the bunch. No longer saddled with the gorgeous but supremely unfunny Elizabeth Hurley, Austin pairs up with Heather Graham, who seems to actually understand the assignment. Where the first film saw Austin as a fish out of water, "The Spy Who Shagged Me" sends him back to the swinging '60s to recover the mojo that Dr. Evil stole from his cryogenically frozen body. Add Fat Bastard, yet another character played by Mike Myers, and Seth Green as the petulant son of Dr. Evil, and you have a surefire hit on your hands.

The Big Lebowski

Come on, you guys. It's "The Big Lebowski." You might not have seen it, but you definitely know it.

One of the Coen brothers' most beloved films (and for the Coens, a pair of filmmakers who don't have many stinkers on their filmography, that's saying something), "The Big Lebowski" stars Jeff Bridges as the Dude, an almost preternaturally laidback bowler who gets caught up in a case of mistaken identity when he is beaten up by some hoods looking for money owed to them by a different Jeffrey Lebowski. The Dude takes the beating in stride, but he can't forgive the criminals for defiling his rug, the one piece of décor that really pulled the whole room together.

Sadly for our beleaguered hero, this is only the beginning of his problems. "The Big Lebowski" is another comedy that people love to quote, and it's not hard to see why; aside from Jeff Bridges, who creates one of the most iconic characters of the '90s, "The Big Lebowski" also happens to be a deceptively well-written film.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail

There are probably not hard numbers on this sort of thing, but "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" may very well be the single most quoted comedy of all time. If 10 of you were to go quiz your dads on their favorite movies, nine of you would find this quirky Arthurian parody pretty high on the list.

That's the lasting impact of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Lovingly assembled by the Monty Python comedy troupe (and famously bankrolled by some of the most beloved musicians of the day, including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull, who stepped in when studios wouldn't touch it), "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" explores many of King Arthur's legendary adventures -- sort of. In a lot of ways, the film captures the aimlessness of Arthurian mythology in a way that few other films are able to; the truth is, the Knights of the Round Table really just wander around looking for scrapes to get into.

We're not even going to try to list the highlights of the film, because the entire screenplay would just end up here. Suffice it to say, it's all good, and everyone should watch it.

The Death Of Stalin

Born from the same satirical mind that brought us "Veep," "The Death of Stalin" is a farcical masterpiece directed by Armando Iannucci, a man who somehow intuitively understands the inherent ridiculousness of politics and power. After Stalin, the leader who ruled the Soviet Union with an iron fist in the years following World War II, suddenly dies, the various cronies and career bureaucrats who surrounded him are thrown into a tailspin. No one wants to take responsibility for anything, yet everyone wants to make themselves look as good as possible.

Stalin's potential successors stand around his dead body for ages, unsure of what to do, years of bureaucratic work stifling their ability to act without circumventing the chain of command. While feigning a deep sense of grief and the appropriate level of solemnity, each of Stalin's devoted counselors quickly and quietly lays the groundwork for a power grab. Their constant backstabbing is a pure delight, as is the tangled, often incoherent political world of shaky alliances and perceived slights that "The Death of Stalin" builds.

Regal Robot's New Salacious B. Crumb Replica

StarWars.com has a fantastic, in-depth interview with Tony McVey, the sculptor who designed and fabricated Salacious B. Crumb — including a new 1:1 replica statue from Regal Robot — and many other inhabitants of the galaxy far, far away.

"The Kowakian monkey-lizard was cooked up in a single night — in about 10 minutes, McVey recalled in The Art of The Mandalorian Season 1 — and was intended to perch on the shoulder of Ephant Mon, a blink-and-you-miss-it part of the crowd. However, the crew, including George Lucas himself, became so enamored with the creature that the puppet quickly got promoted to Jabba's minion, coming to life at the hands of puppeteer Tim Rose and Mark Dodson who provided the voice. "One day I came in and here was Salacious and I fell in love with Salacious," Lucas said in The Making of Return of the Jedi."

Additionally, the interview also includes Regal Robot's Tom Spina, who takes us behind-the-scenes of recreating the beloved Kowakian monkey-lizard.

The original prop is still in the [Lucasfilm] archives. We do a lot of research at the Skywalker Ranch archives and over the years with my other company, we've done restoration work for them on a number of pieces. So we did get to go and look at that real puppet. We got to spend many, many, many hours and days, actually, with it. We were able to measure things. We were able to take photos and really provide Tony with a foundation to make sure that this new sculpt was going to be one-to-one, 100% the same size, the same look, etc. And, you know, we sent Tony a lot of reference photos. Probably way too many reference photos. He can probably sculpt in his sleep at this point. [Laughs]

If you're interested in Regal Robot's 1:1 replica statue, it'll cost you $3,999.00 — and you better act quick! At the time of writing this article, only 4 (of 150) remain! Each piece in this limited, signature edition will be made in the U.S.A. and hand finished by the FX artists in Regal Robot's New York studio. The accompanying metal plaque is signed by both the original sculptor, Tony McVey, and the character's on-set performer, Tim Rose.

The High Republic: Tempest Runner Audiobook Clip

Here's the official synopsis for the audio original:

The Nihil storm has raged through the galaxy, leaving chaos and grief in its wake. Few of its raiders are as vicious as the Tempest Runner Lourna Dee. She stays one step ahead of the Jedi Order at the helm of a vessel named after one of the deadliest monsters in the galaxy: the Lourna Dee. But no one can outrun the defenders of the High Republic forever.

After the defeat of her crew, Lourna falls into the hands of the Jedi–but not before she hides her identity, becoming just another Nihil convict. Her captors fail to understand the beast they have cornered. Just like every fool she's ever buried, their first mistake was keeping her alive.

Lourna is determined to make underestimating her their last.

Locked onto a Republic correctional ship, she's dragged across the galaxy to repair the very damage she and her fellow Tempest Runners inflicted on it. But as Lourna plans her glorious escape, she makes alliances that grow dangerously close to friendships. Outside the Nihil—separated from her infamous ship, her terrifying arsenal, and her feared name—Lourna must carve her own path. But will it lead to redemption? Or will she emerge as a deadlier threat than ever before?

HBO Max Wants to Find ‘The Real Magic Mike’ in New Competition Series from Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh

by Ethan Anderton

Magic Mike helped turn Channing Tatum into a huge star, and now the former male stripper will try to help another chiseled dancer find fame and fortune with a new competition series on HBO Max. Channing Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh are executive producing the tentatively titled The Real Magic Mike, a series that will turn a group of 10 men who have “lost their magic” into real-life Magic Mikes.

HBO Max sent out a press release announcing the order of The Real Magic Mike, an unscripted competition series from Eureka Productions and Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon. Magic Mike franchise producer Reid Carolin is also executive producing with Peter Kiernan, Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler, Vincent Marini, Alycia Rossiter, Cassie Lambert ScalettarChris Culvenor, Paul Franklin, Wes Dening, and David Tibballs, along with Kevin Boyer as co-executive producer.

On The Real Magic Mike, HBO Max says 10 men will “bare their souls and more as they evolve their bodies, learn to perform spectacular routines, and develop a new level of self-confidence.” Not only will they strip themselves of their clothes but also their emotional baggage as they try to get their mojo back and become the one and only Real Magic Mike. The title also comes with a cash prize and an opportunity to perform on the Magic Mike Live stage in Las Vegas. A nationwide casting search for the contestants is currently underway.

Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max, said in a statement:

“From box office hits to sold-out live shows, Magic Mike has proven to be a pop culture juggernaut that continues to delight people across the globe. We’re excited to work with Channing, Steven and the team behind Magic Mike Live to continue this successful franchise that celebrates self-confidence and sexiness both inside and out.”

Mike Darnell, President of Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, added:

“Magic Mike is one of Warner Bros.’ most iconic franchises. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Channing, Steven and HBO Max on an all-new vision of this amazing and legendary brand. We’re looking forward to giving fans a front row seat as we search the country for undiscovered talent.”

It’s always dispiriting when studios refer to their titles as brands, but that’s what show business is all about. Even so, HBO Max has done a solid job capitalizing on the most recognizable titles that fall under the WarnerMedia banner, and they have much more on the way. Since another Magic Mike movie is probably out of the question without Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum signing off on it, this is probably the next best thing. Hopefully it actually does some good for these men rather than just being an excuse for showing off glistening muscular bodies in contest with each other.

The Real Magic Mike doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but it’s expected to arrive on HBO Max later this year.

Style Scenario – Valentine’s Day 2019: Date Night at Home

by Joe

What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and three style scenarios will be tackled in the next few days (going out, staying in, & staying in solo). Just because you’re skipping the Prix Fixe menus and overcrowded restaurants doesn’t mean you should mail it in when it comes to style. Dressing up a bit, even at home, earns you extra points. Plus, it can be a lot of fun. (Top photo credit)

The Blazer: Banana Republic Italian Wool Knit Blazer – $149.99 ($298). Sportcoats make you look slimmer, stronger, and sometimes even a bit smarter. This isn’t a bad night to work one in, no? Plus, it’s knit from Italian wool, so it’s super comfortable. And it’s red! Embrace the cheesiness. Extra 40% comes at checkout.

The Watch: Glycine Combat 6 Classic Automatic Watch – $289.99 FINALOr, whatever your favorite do-anything, smart-casual watch happens to be. Gotta time the bolognese after all. These just hit Massdrop for pre-order. Classic good looks, Swiss made, sapphire crystal, and an exhibition caseback. Available in either 36mm or 43mm diameters.

The Henley: Bonobos Performance Long Sleeve Henley – $22.40 FINAL w/ ECLIPSE20 ($58). Thanks to the knit sportcoat (which is kinda a hybrid sportcoat/sweater) you can throw one of these under it and still look really put together. And henleys? Henleys are masculine.

The Cozying Up Instigator: Ash & Fir 80% Wool / 20% Acrylic Throw – $70 ($99). That crummy polyester fleece blanket with the pattern that looks like 1973 threw up on it? Mood killer. This is the opposite. What happens under the blanket stays under the blanket. Unless you need to move off the couch to another room in your place.

The Gift: Julia Szendrei Moon Studs 14k – $42.98 ($54). If your date happens to be a woman. And if you’re exchanging gifts, you’d better have something by now. Just setting the overall style scenario tone though. Something smallish in size and price is a nice way to go if you’re spending the evening in. She can wear these pretty much anywhere with anything. From dressed up to athleisure.

The Belt: Gap Smart Casual Belt – $25.60 w/ STAYWARM ($39.95). A simple belt that should look good with jeans or chinos.

The Shoes: Astorflex Greenflex in Stone – $150. A little bit of light suede contrast. Made in Italy. Extremely comfortable. Try not to get the bolognese on em’.

The Background Music: The Very Best of Otis Redding – $5.99 (free streaming with Prime). You can never go wrong with Otis; his greatest hits will set the mood for a romantic evening.

The Wine: Skyfall Cabernet – $10.99. Good cab, nice price, classy label. It’s the little things that matter, and not opening a bottle of 19 Crimes or Mad Housewife is probably in your best interest.

The Jeans: Levi’s 505 in Tumbled Rigid – $39.99. (Wait for it…) Or whatever your favorite pair of dark denim happens to be.

Obi-Wan’s ”Certain Point of View” BS Gets Retconned as a Religious Thing

by Angie Han

obi-wan

Obi-Wan Kenobi might be one of the most prominent and most popular characters in the Star Wars original trilogy, but I’ve long harbored a grudge against him for lying to Luke about his parentage. No, that’s not entirely accurate — it’s not the lying I despise so much as his nonsense excuse when Luke calls him out on it, which is “What I told you was true… from a certain point of view.” I don’t know about you guys on Tatooine, Obi-Wan, but here on Earth that’s still called lying.

Such dishonesty hardly seems like appropriate behavior for a Jedi knight, and I’m not the only fan to have noticed. Fortunately for Obi-Wan, though, the Star Wars canon is huge and expanding every day, and that means there’s room to retcon his “certain point of view” bullcrap so it’s no longer “fake news” or an “alternative fact,” but actually a religious reference.

As noticed by io9, Chuck Wendig’s new book Star Wars: Aftermath – Empire’s End includes this prayer from the Journal of the Whills:

The truth in our soul
Is that nothing is true.
The question of life
Is what then do we do?
The burden is ours
To penance, we hew.
The Force binds us all
From a certain point of view.

So you see, Obi-Wan wasn’t just trying to cover his own ass when Luke got mad at him for withholding the truth about his parentage! He was just alluding to an ancient religion! If anything, Luke was the rude one for not realizing that sometimes, people might tell you stuff that isn’t true in any actual, practical sense, but might be true “from a certain point of view“!

While I can’t honestly say this changes my opinion of the character, I’ve got to give Wendig a begrudging “well played” for his clever reframing of Obi-Wan’s deceit. Now let’s see if Wendig ever manages to turn Obi-Wan’s nonsensical “a more civilized age” line into anything other than the Star Wars equivalent of a Boomer grumbling about Millennials. We know you’re talking about the prequels, Obi-Wan! Maybe don’t be so smug about how great things were back in the day.

How I Got Over My Fear of Investing and Started Saving for My Future

by Kristin Wong on Two Cents, shared by Andy Orin to Lifehacker

Growing up, I figured investing was something super rich people did because they had money to burn. It intimidated me, but I figured I’d never have to worry about it. Turns out, investing is for the rest of us, too, and it’s actually important if you want to grow your net worth—even if you’re not a billionaire.

Every State Described by a Single Sarcastic Line from a Bitter Resident

by Abraham

Do you love your state? Probably. Hopefully, at least.

But do you love everything about your state? Of course not.

So if you took a few moments you could definitely come up with some barbed, perhaps even bitter, description of your home. And that’s exactly how some people recently chose to respond to a European who asked, “Americans, how would you summarize your state in one sentence?”

Here is every state in the union, described perhaps more unhappily than the departments of tourism might appreciate…

A Broken Engagement Didn’t Stop This Jilted Bride from Taking Epic “Wedding” Pictures

by Abraham

When she got engaged last March, Shelby Swink couldn’t have been more excited. She immediately threw herself heart and soul into planning their November wedding.

Everything was all set weeks in advance. All that was left to do was be excited when her fiance dropped a bomb. Five days before the big day, he sat her down and told her didn’t love her anymore and that he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life with her.

Shelby was left in shock, of course.

After the flurry of phone calls required to cancel with guests and vendors, all that was left to do was hurt. But then a few friends suggested something they thought might be a helpful release.

Why not trash her dress?

So on the morning her wedding had been scheduled for, Shelby and her bridesmaids went ahead and posed for her “wedding” pictures.

And instead of bouquets, they were all armed with paint…

The bridesmaids started out a bit timidly.

This isn’t something anyone is accustomed to doing. Just think how much that dress cost!

But then they started to get comfortable and go a little crazier…

When they were done, they posed for a “before-and-after”…

But they weren’t really done. Not even close.

The partying and colorful destruction continued…

All the disappointment, all the hurt… I just felt it leave me. I can’t even describe how liberating and cathartic the experience was for me. I let go of all the hurt and became myself again.

She continues…

I am a strong woman… I decided that I will not let this tragedy and heartbreak consume me, and bring me down in life.

How to Make a Wooden Tool Carrier

by Darren Bush

finished

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. If you need to carry a few tools around, an open-top toolbox is great, especially if you are a visual person and need to see things for them to exist. Plumbers love these boxes, as pipe wrenches are long and awkward to carry. I just laid out a few tools I knew I wanted to carry in this box, and made up a plan.

I wanted to build something that would carry a saw or two, a level, a few chisels, and a what-have-you or two. The size of your box is your call; I made mine long enough to hold lengthier tools. The method is the same, irrespective of the length of your toolbox.

estimate-length

Materials

  • 6′ 1×10 clear pine
  • 6′ 1×6 clear pine
  • 2-4′ of 1 1/4” diameter dowel
  • Wood glue
  • 35-40 1 1/4” #6 wood screws
  • Pilot drill bit and countersink for #6 screws
  • Cordless drill
  • Phillips screwdriver bit
  • Bit brace
  • 1 1/4” auger bit
  • Japanese pull saw
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • Small block plane
  • Wood putty (optional)
  • Varnish (optional)

There are only six pieces of wood in your toolbox: a bottom piece, two sidepieces, two end pieces, and a dowel for your handle.

Step One

Pick good, clean boards. Sometimes you’ll need to pick through the pile to get a good board without large knots (little ones are fine, they add character). You want nice, clean edges, so take care in transport.

Step Two

Choose the size of your box. I decided to make the interior length of my box 36” so it would hold some longer tools like a handsaw, level, etc. I laid out the tools I wanted to put in the toolbox to assure they’d fit.

Step Three

Make sure your lumber is square. Not all lumber has square ends, and if something’s a little off, it’ll show up during construction. Using a t-square, mark a fresh line an inch or so from the ends of the board and trim off. You don’t have to do this, but it’s not a bad habit to get into, especially when you see what happens when you’re fitting your last board and realize there’s an 1/8” gap where there shouldn’t be.

Step Four

sawing1

Measure and cut your pieces. I made the interior dimensions of the box 36″. Since the bottom and sides of the box will be capped by the end pieces, I cut them all at 36”. You will need two pieces of 1×6 and a single 1×10. Mark them with your square and cut.

Step Five

Design and cut your end pieces. Measure 6 1/4” from the bottom of your 1×10 and mark that spot on both sides of the board.

measure-centerline

Now measure 11” from the bottom edge of the board and using your combination square, find the midpoint and mark it.

compass_circle

Set your compass to a 1” radius, which will make an arc of 2”. Place the point of the compass on your 11” mark. Make a circle with your compass. I didn’t complete the circle because the bottom part isn’t relevant. You’ll see why later.

connecting-out-radius

Now using a straight edge, connect your mark at 6 1/4” with the tangent of the arc you created with the compass. Repeat on the other side.

sawing-angles

Reset your compass so that your radius is 5/16”. Placing the point of the compass on the 11” mark, draw another circle to mark a 1 1/4” hole. Using your pull saw, cut out the piece. Don’t try to follow the curve, just make a big point. Your piece will now come loose. Trim your board square and repeat the process.

end-piece-rough-cut

Trim the tip off the triangle as close as you can to the line. It will just save you time later when you are smoothing the end.

auger-end-piece

Using your brace and bit, drill the hole for your handle. Place the center screw on the bit and make sure it goes in the center of the 11” mark. If it drifts, your handle will be off center. When the center screw of the bit pokes through the wood, turn your piece over and finish the bore.

If you do not have a brace and bit you can use a cordless drill and a 1 1/4” spade bit, but you will have less control. If you do go this route, remember to stop halfway through, turn the board over and finish the bore from the backside so the wood won’t splinter.

rasping-end

Using a rasp, clean up the top of the side pieces so you have a nice clean radius.

templating

Repeat the whole thing for the second end piece. You can use the one you just made as a template. Be careful things are all matched up or you will have a lop-sided toolbox.

Step Six

measuring-38ths

Attach end pieces to the bottom board. Since your boards are 3/4” thick, you want to make sure that you are screwing into the middle of the bottom board. Measure in 3/8” and mark. Using a combination square, mark a line across the bottom of the sidepiece.

5screws

I put five screws along the bottom, so I spaced them out, one in the center and the others spaced out equally. Using a drill and a countersink, drill holes for your screws. Place your screws in the holes and drive them in until the points just barely poke through the end piece.

hammer-taps

Apply some wood glue to the end of bottom board. Line up the bottom with the end piece and tap with a hammer to set them. Drive in the middle screw, and check that everything still lines up. Some squeeze out is good.

90-end

The end pieces and bottom piece should make a 90-degree angle. Repeat for the opposite end piece.

Step Seven

dry-fit

Attach the side pieces. Dry fit the pieces in place and trim if necessary. They should fit snugly but the end pieces should not be pushed out of square. Once snug and square, put glue along the edges of the side piece facing both the bottom and the end pieces.

38thforside

You’ll want to use the same technique you used before by measuring 3/8” from the edge of the end piece so that the screws will go as close to the center of the side pieces as possible.

end-screws

Now drill and countersink a few holes on the end pieces. Making sure things are lined up, drive the screws into the side pieces.

Step Eight

finsihed-end-dowel

Attach the dowel. Place the dowel through the two end pieces. You want the dowel to make the end pieces square to the bottom piece. Place one end of the dowel flush with the end piece. Make sure both ends are square and mark the dowel on the outside where you will cut it. Note: the length of the dowel should be exactly the side of your bottom board plus 1 1/2”. Slide the cut dowel into the end pieces. Slide the dowel to one side and put a little glue inside the hole, and then slide it the other way and do the same.

end-countersink

Now drill and countersink one hole in the top of the end piece on each side. Drive one screw into the end piece and the dowel. Between the glue and the screw it will never move.

Step Nine

All that’s left to do is fasten the bottom piece to the side pieces. The number of screws you use is related to the length of the toolbox. Same technique: 3/8″ from the edge, measured with your square. Drill and countersink a hole every 6 or 8 inches. I wasn’t precise because it doesn’t matter to me, but feel free to be if you want to. Watch for appropriate squeeze out.

Step Ten

relief

Relieve the side edges. This is unnecessary, but I like to do it. A sharp block plane can take off the little corner than is both unaesthetic and will ding up easily.

Step Eleven

sanding

Using 120-grit sandpaper, hand sand the outside surfaces. If you’re really a stickler, you can use wood putty or wood plugs to hide the screw holes, but for me this is a “back of the truck” toolbox, so I didn’t plug or fill anything.

Another option is to finish the box. Since this isn’t sitting in the rain somewhere, it didn’t matter to me. I did decide to wipe the outside down with a Danish oil finish that penetrates the wood, but again, that’s optional. If I were giving this to someone as a gift, I probably would seal it somehow. Use varnish if you want the wood to show, or your favorite color paint if you want something a little colorful. Either way, in 30 years it will have a glorious patina.

Why Musicians Should Never Stop Learning (Plus 3 Lessons You Can Apply)

by David Santistevan

Becoming a musician isn’t about “arriving” or “making it”.

Sure, some musicians are farther along than others. We all have our idols that we want to be like. But even the most advanced, skilled musician has more to learn.

The moment you stop learning is the moment you stop being a musician. The nature of music is that you never arrive. There’s a world of creativity to unlock.

unlock your creativity

This is true because God is the author of all creativity.

Created in his image, we are made to create. It is wired into our DNA.

Does Creativity Run Out?

Imagine something ridiculous with me. Let’s say I wrote a blog post with the sole purpose of announcing my creative brilliance.

I had finally arrived.

After all my hard work, my 29 year old self had finally reached the pinnacle of creative genius.

There was nothing more to learn, uncover, or discover.

I had worked hard and exhausted all there was to know.

You probably wouldn’t have finished reading another sentence before you were on youtube watching something way more interesting.

This is ridiculous because we know deep with ourselves that there is so much more.

As long as there is more of God to see, there will always be a deeper level of creativity to reach [Tweet that?].

Let’s pull this down from the sky onto the ground level: A musician who is constantly developing is a musician who gets opportunities and others want to be around.

Nobody wants to be around “that musician” – the musician that already knows it all and can’t take an ounce of instruction. Nobody wants to hire that guy. Nobody wants to make music with that guy.

3 Action Steps for Your Learning

Hopefully, I convinced you that you should never stop growing. But I also want to leave you with 3 action steps you can take.

1. Engage in Active Listening – I’ve touched on this already HERE, but let me be clear. We all listen to music. And we all need those times where we listen to music for the sake of pure enjoyment. That’s not what I’m talking about here.

On a regular basis, listen to music for the purpose of learning – analyzing, writing down what you hear, deconstructing what is happening on your instrument. This may be the single greatest way to grow your musicality because you’re not being spoon-fed information. You’re becoming a self-learner. You’re discovering.

2. Foster Curiosity – I’ll mention a couple ideas here. First, become a noticer. Isn’t it true that we race through life at deafening speeds? We run from one activity to the next and never stop to notice the glory of God all around us. We are hardly ever present in the moment.

There always something, somewhere else on our minds. There’s always social networks to check into. We can’t simply enjoy our food without making the Instagram world jealous that we are having a great time.

Creatives are noticers. They slow down, notice the world within their day, and use that as fuel for their creations.

Second, do something that you’ve never done. If you are just a “singer”, pick up an instrument. Make a financial investment into a new piece of gear. Try a new style. Experiment with a new, random instrument. Be ever curious, ever expanding your palette of what God can use.

3. Schedule Creativity – I have an appointment on my calendar called “songwriting” (if only I could keep it more often). Musicians who never stop learning don’t wait for anticipation to strike. They schedule their creativity and get to work.

Most of us avoid this because we’re afraid of writing a bad song, messing up that melodic minor scale, or getting off the click track. We hate for our weakness to be revealed, even if we’re by ourselves.

Musician, please, do not fear. Your crappy creativity appointments over time, will eventually produce something brilliant. You can’t have the masterpiece without the mud. You can’t have the awesome without the arduous. Your painful practice will produce awesomeness if you don’t give up.

Most aspiring musicians give up when it’s hard (think about how many people have taken piano lessons for years but still don’t play the piano). But it’s the visionary musician who catches a vision – a vision for being used by God on a deeper level.

A musician who is ready when God says “now” and pours out His Spirit. A musician who is not afraid of what is difficult but instead, welcomes it. A musician who never stops learning.

Are you one of them?

Victims of the Hollywood Paradox

by Seth Godin
The studios spend ever more on the blockbusters they make because that demonstrates their power and pays everyone in the chain more money, which creates more (apparent) power for those in charge.

But since they pay so much, they have no choice, they think, but to say, “This must work!” So they polish off the edges, follow the widely-known secret formula and create banality. No glory, it seems, with guts.

Every meeting is about avoiding coming anywhere near the sentence, "this might not work," and instead giving ammunition to the groupthink belief that this must work.

And as soon as you do that, you’ve guaranteed it won’t.

Every bestseller is a surprise bestseller, and in fact, nobody knows anything.

(And of course, it's not just movies, is it?)

What "no" means

by Seth Godin
  • I'm too busy
  • I don't trust you
  • This isn't on my list
  • My boss won't let me
  • I'm afraid of moving this forward
  • I'm not the person you think I am
  • I don't have the resources you think I do
  • I'm not the kind of person that does things like this
  • I don't want to open the door to a long-term engagement
  • Thinking about this will cause me to think about other things I just don't want to deal with

What it doesn't mean:

  • I see the world the way you do, I've carefully considered every element of this proposal and understand it as well as you do and I hate it and I hate you.

Scrub Your Bathtub and Shower in Minutes with a Cordless Drill

by Alan Henry

I'm a big fan of using cordless drills to speed up tasks whenever possible, and this trick from The Manly Housekeeper takes the idea to a new level. Just mod the top of a typical hand-held scrubber with a bit attachment, snap the assembly together, and get to work.
