by André Stray

This Dibbling Plate Will Grow Your Love for Sowing

by Kristina Panos

One of the best things about 3D printers and laser cutters is their ability to produce specialized tools that steal time back from tedious processes. Seed sowing is a great example of this. Even if you only want to sow one tray with two dozen or so seeds, you still have to fill the tray with soil, level it off, compress it evenly, and poke all the holes. When seed sowing is the kernel of your bread and butter, doing all of that manually will eat up a lot of time.

There are machines out there to do dibbling on a large scale, but [Michael Ratcliffe] has been dabbling in dibbling plates for the smaller-scale farm. He’s created an all-in-one tool that does everything but dump the soil in the tray. Once you’ve done that, you can use edge to level off the excess soil, compress it with the back side, and then flip to the bed-of-nails side to make all the holes at once. It comes apart easily, so anyone can replace broken or dulled dibblers.

[Michael] is selling these fairly cheaply, but you can find all the files and build instructions out there in the Thingiverse. We planted the demo video after the break.

More into micro-greens? 3D printing can feed that fixation, too.

What Ecstasy Does To Octopuses

by BeauHD
Gul Dolen, a neuroscientist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who studies how the cells and chemicals in animal brains influence animals' social lives, gave ecstasy to octopuses and recorded her observations. The study, published in the journal Current Biology, suggests that the psychoactive drug that can make people feel extra loving toward others also has the same effect on octopuses. An anonymous reader shares the report from The Atlantic: [Dolen] and her colleague Eric Edsinger put five Californian two-spot octopuses individually into the middle of three connected chambers and gave them free rein to explore. One of the adjacent chambers housed a second octopus, confined inside an overturned plastic basket. The other contained an unfamiliar object, such as a plastic flower or a Chewbacca figurine. Dolen and Edsinger measured how long the main animal spent in the company of its peer, and how long with the random toy. The free-moving individuals thoroughly explored the chambers, and from their movements, Dolen realized that individuals of any sex gravitate toward females, but avoid males. Next, she dosed the animals with ecstasy. Again, there's no precedent for this, but researchers often anesthetize octopuses by dunking them in ethanol -- a humane procedure with no lasting side effects. So Dolen and Edsinger submerged their octopuses in an MDMA solution, allowing them to absorb the drug through their gills. At first they used too high a dose, and the animals "freaked out and did all these color changes," Dolen says. But once the team found a more suitable dose, the animals behaved more calmly -- and more sociably. "With ecstasy in their system, the five octopuses spent far more time in the company of the same trapped male they once shunned," the report continues. "Even without a stopwatch, the change was obvious. Before the drug, they explored the chamber with the other octopus very tentatively." "They mashed themselves against one wall, very slowly extended one arm, touched the [other animal], and went back to the other side," Dolen says. "But when they had MDMA, they had this very relaxed posture. They floated around, they wrapped their arms around the chamber, and they interacted with the other octopus in a much more fluid and generous way. They even exposed their [underside], where their mouth is, which is not something octopuses usually do."

Photographer on a Mission to Document the Great Libraries of the World

by Michael Zhang

Brooklyn, New York-based photographer Franck Bohbot wants to capture the great libraries of the world in photos. His “House of Books” project comprises photos of the grand spaces in the buildings, offering a beautiful look into the places where books have lived for decades (or even centuries).

The project started after Bohbot visited a number of libraries in Paris. He has since photographed libraries in Rome and Boston, and plans to visit other ones in Europe, South America, Asia, and North America.

Bohbot says he wanted to pay tribute to the architects that designed the magnificent spaces. “The light, the composition and the colors have to be coherent in all the series,” he says.

Here are some of the images in the ongoing project so far:

Risky Business #275 -- Patch Tuesday, Indicator Wednesday?

This week's show is brought to you by our longest term sponsor, Tenable Network Security, thanks guys. In this week's sponsor interview we chat with the CEO and co-founder of Tenable, industry stalwart Ron Gula. We're chatting to him about a funny idea -- that the release of indicators of compromise might become so regular that they'll have to be handled in regular info sec team workflow. So we'll have Patch Tuesday and "which IPs owned us" Wednesday.
