We recently celebrated my sister, Sara, and the pending arrival of my nephew, Finn, with a baby shower. Sara’s sister-in-law did a Martha Stewart-worthy job with the planning, decor, and creative decisions.  Her other sister-in-law put together the best macaroni and cheese bar, which I’ve decided is what I want to eat for every meal ever from now on. I, true to form, took care of the butter and sugar – cake pops, elephant sugar cookies, and brown butter sea salt crispy treats, because why have one dessert when you can have three? My niece Stella, in her 2 1/2 years of wisdom, saw decorations and presents and declared it her birthday party. She went so far as to tell one guest that they could not have a cake pop because they were for her birthday. Well played, kid, well played.

Baby Finn, we cannot wait to meet you! Hopefully your big sister learns to share her cake pops before you get here.

There's been an awful lot of chatter about Disney's Boy Meets World reboot, Girl Meets World, which will follow the exploits of Cory and Topanga's daughter, Riley. Whether or not this show will also last long enough for fans to follow Riley through junior high, high school, college and into marriage remains to be seen, but the first clip is here, and there is something heartwarming about seeing Cory and Topanga back in action. Smithsonian Magazine just announced the finalists of their 11th Annual Photo Contest. Theater Cancels 'Noah' Showing Because of a Flood

Moviegoers in Exeter, England had their best-laid plans foiled after an ice machine broke down at the Vue Cinema, flooding the theater—which happened to be showing Noah. So, instead of watching Darren Aronofsky's tale of judgement, mercy and rock monsters, they were forced to file out two-by-two and find some other, non-flooded theater until the ice machine got fixed. Hopefully, this doesn't signify a new trend of biblical films coming to contemporary life. One shudders to think of what might happen to Left Behind fans ...

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey Will Play Sisters in 'The Nest'

Any enterprising filmmakers out there, take note: If you want people to care about your comedy, get Amy Poehler and Tina Fey to sign on. Universal just announced the America's favorite best friends will be playing sisters in The Nest, which will follow the pair dealing with the fact that their childhood home has been put up for sale. That sounds sort of melancholy, but if Poehler and Fey are on board, then it can't be all that sad. The two have been in movies together before, ranging from the ho-hum (Baby Mama) to the very good (Mean Girls) but if history tells us anything, it's that this movie's best bet is to find a way to get the two to host some sort of fictional awards show ...

Will it be Jimmy Fallon vs. Stephen Colbert in the new late night network ratings wars? According to several entertainment industry insiders, executives at CBS are hoping that Stephen Colbert will take over as the host of The Late Show when David Letterman retires next year. As Mashable notes, conveniently, Colbert’s Comedy Central contract ends in 2015—around the same time Letterman said that he would be going off the air for good during last week’s retirement announcement. Should We Be Concerned About This Weird Light Coming from Mars?

Don’t be alarmed, but an image recently sent back to earth from a NASA camera on the planet Mars appears to show a weird, artificial light, beaming upward. Obviously, this has sparked the interest of some amateur bloggers, UFO enthusiasts and fans of the space program who don’t see any natural explanation for the strange ray of light, that is, aside from some unknown type of Martian intelligent life. Unsurprisingly, NASA is yet to comment on the image. So technically, if you read between the lines, that means they’re not not saying that the beam of light isn’t some sort of ominous beacon from a species of hostile alien invaders preparing for their eminent attack on their neighbors living on planet earth ...

Amazon Dash Wand

Amazon Dash is a handheld Wi-Fi wand that includes a barcode scanner and a microphone, allowing you to scan or say what you’re running low on without having to leave your kitchen. Woah, Amazon is agressively taking convenience to a whole new level. I can’t help but admit that this doesn’t feel good. Don’t get me wrong, I am guilty of ordering from Amazon. But I have consciously started reconsidering what exactly I am ordering online. If a small local business sells it close by, I will go there.

The examples they’re showing in this video are making me a bit sad; milk? You really want to get one jug of milk in a big cardboard delivered the next day? Also, doesn’t the iphone app already do exactly this?

ps: I first thought this was an April’s Fools Joke.

Check Out NPR's Very Clever Prank on the Internet

Why Doesn't America Read Anymore? screeched NPR's article headline, which was promptly shot onto Facebook and Twitter with the sort of apocalyptic hype so many web articles are these days. It was a little surprising, because NPR has typically kept above the fray—at their best, they have some of the most level-headed and balanced reporting out there. Which is maybe why they were able to get away with this prank, for a prank it was. If you actually clicked on the article, all it said was the following:

Congratulations, genuine readers, and happy April Fools' Day! We sometimes get the sense that some people are commenting on NPR stories that they haven't actually read. If you are reading this, please like this post and do not comment on it. Then let's see what people have to say about this "story."

The "article" did prove their point however, as reader after reader left comments bemoaning the state of America, defending their own reading habits or criticizing NPR's analysis (an analysis, of course, that NPR hadn't actually given.) "My brain's good and I encourage others to read," protested one commenter. "I read everyday, sometimes many times," said another. Some people gave a genuinely insightful take on what they perceived as being the problem at hand, although they were responding to an issue NPR wasn't actually addressing. Regardless, looks like a few people could have done with being a little more careful with the Internet's "mob mentality" ...

Have you seen this New York Times article about the lost art of the unsent angry letter?

“Whenever Abraham Lincoln felt the urge to tell someone off,” Konnikova writes, “he would compose what he called a ’hot letter’. He’d pile all of his anger into a note, ‘put it aside until his emotions cooled down’...and then write: ‘never sent. Never signed.’ ”

It’s interesting to think about how social media has changed the ways we express heat-of-the-moment frustration. Here are two excerpts from the article...

Before the Internet: "The unsent angry letter has a venerable tradition. Its purpose is twofold. It serves as a type of emotional catharsis, a way to let it all out without the repercussions of true engagement. And it acts as a strategic catharsis, an exercise in saying what you really think, which Mark Twain (himself a notable non-sender of correspondence) believed provided 'unallowable frankness & freedom.' "

Nowadays: "We toss our reflexive anger out there, but we do it publicly, without the private buffer that once would have let us separate what needed to be said from what needed only to be felt....We may also find ourselves feeling less satisfied. Because the angry email (or tweet or text or whatnot) takes so much less effort to compose than a pen-and-paper letter, it may in the end offer us a less cathartic experience, in just the same way that pressing the end call button on your cellphone will never be quite the same as slamming down an old-fashioned receiver."

Have you ever written an angry letter, knowing you'll never send it? Would you now? I once read a challenge (I can't remember where) to write a love letter to a current, past or future love without sending it, which also sounds like a pretty compelling exercise. Anyway, let me know what you think!

Broken Mirror/Evening Sky is a series of images by New York photographer Bing Wright who captured the reflections of sunsets on shattered mirrors. The final prints are displayed quite large, measuring nearly 4′ across by 6′ tall, creating what I can only imagine to be the appearance of stained glass windows. The series was on view early this year at Paula Cooper Gallery where you can learn more about the works, and you can see more on Wright’s website. (via Found Inspiration Moving Forward)

One of the greatest ongoing friendships in the celebrity world is the charming, adventurous, unfailingly sweet kinship struck by Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen. The two became pals while playing onscreen foes during the X-Men movies, and have been charming the world ever since with their ongoing exploits. Most recently, they've worked together on Broadway, performing acclaimed runs of Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land. This summer, they'll be back in mutant action as Professor X and Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past. According to Adweek, at the Cupcake ATM, which is located next to the Sprinkles Cupcakes bakery on New York’s Upper East Side (naturally), “cupcakes cost $4.25 each in flavors like red velvet, Cuban coffee, banana dark chocolate and cinnamon sugar. You can also get two special mini cupcakes designed for your dog for $5.” We’re not sure if it should be cause for concern that the doggy cupcakes cost more than the ones meant for human consumption ...

A ‘Community’ Movie and New Season on the Way?

Good news Greendale Community College devotees: It looks like a sixth season of Community is now increasingly likely, and to series creator Dan Harmon says that a movie could also be in the works. According to a report in TV Guide, even if NBC passes on a new season of the show—which has struggled with ratings at times—producers could find another destination (possibly Hulu) for the surreal sitcom. After that, Harmon has his eyes on the big screen. He told HitFlix, "If the movie has to be made out of clay and duct tape in my basement, then that’s how the movie will be made, because there has to be closure." But, as Vulture points out, considering that director Justin Lin (the man behind some of the Fast & Furious blockbusters), who has been behind the camera on a few episodes of the show, a Lin-helmed movie isn’t outside the realm of possibility ...

World Vision Reverses Decision on Employees in Same-Sex Marriages

World Vision has formally reversed its two-day-old decision to drop a hiring ban on employees in same-sex marriages. In a statement, the company's president Richard Stearns said:

The board acknowledged they made a mistake and chose to revert to our longstanding conduct policy requiring sexual abstinence for all single employees and faithfulness within the Biblical covenant of marriage between a man and a woman ...In our board's effort to unite around the church's shared mission to serve the poor in the name of Christ, we failed to be consistent with World Vision U.S.'s commitment to the traditional understanding of Biblical marriage and our own Statement of Faith, which says, "We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God." And we also failed to seek enough counsel from our own Christian partners. As a result, we made a change to our conduct policy that was not consistent with our Statement of Faith and our commitment to the sanctity of marriage.

The decision—which Stearns announced on Monday—has been the source of heated controversy ...

True Detective: Where Is Ellen's Oscar Selfie?

As you doubtless heard, a selfie Ellen took at the Oscars with all the world's famous people became the world's most retweeted thing of all time shortly thereafter. Not a big deal, but it's what passes for news these days, so people paid attention. But now there is real news going on with it because the tweet appears to be missing. What happened? Nobody knows. Was it stolen? Did it break? Did one of global superstars in the selfie decide they didn't like the way they looked in the selfie, and politely ask Ellen to delete it?
