An Illustrated Book by Dulk Wins 2nd Annual ‘Brussels in Shorts’ Graphic Short Story Competition

Now in its second year, Brussels in Shorts is an international graphic short story competition that invites illustrators and artist from around the world to create a predominantly visual story set against contemporary Brussels. The winners this year were graphic artist Antonio Segura Donat (a.k.a. Dulk) and brother Carlos out of Valencia, Spain who created this superbly illustrated short story titled Zomeravonden (Summer Evenings) based on sketches made while visiting the city center. This book and nine others were on view at the Belgian Comic Strip Center back in February. You can see much more of Dulk’s work over on Facebook. (via Behance)

19th Century Fore-Edge Paintings Are Hidden on the Pages of a Book
Colleen Theisen of the Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Iowa recently posted some fantastic 19th century paintings that are hidden on the fore-edge of books (known as fore-edge paintings)—in order to see the paintings, the pages of the book must be fanned. The paintings posted by Theisen are from an 1837 four-volume series on the seasons by Scottish author Robert Mudie.

Big Dreams for Little People!
I was obsessed with the original Ostrich Pillow, but now you’re telling me there’s an adorably smaller version? I. Can’t. Even. Breathe!! Named the Ostrich Pillow Junior, it turns sleepy tots into serious power nappers. It’s a wearable microenvironment where kids can recharge! — While I was love-stalking the designers at StudioBananaTHiNGS, I found their hilarious version of the Harlem Shake! It’s a must-see so jump and watch!

Repurposing done right!
One of the most abundant and yet easily forgotten objects, the shipping pallet can be found in all corners of the world… many of which are neglected, or disposed of after use. The Re-Stacked Lounger breathes new life into old pallets, repurposing them into a lightweight mobileseating structure. Though unrecognizable from its original form, each lounge maintains the character and patina of the material for a naturally aged aesthetic!
Multiple angles in the Re-Stacked Lounger that act to visually lighten the piece. These angled edges create a lounger that is more comfortable, with easy transition between standing and seating. The back two edges have been left square and unchanged to show the stacking structure clearly.
Rough parts are finished smooth where users sit. This contrasts with the interior of the piece, which is still in its rough and original state and highly visible due to the stacking of the pallets, which are inherently porous.
To ensure that the lounger is inviting and looks comfortable, a soft surface has been developed and created in conjunction with the seat itself. Woollen fleece cuts along with the process of dry needle felting create a knitted blanket as a form of cushioning. The colors of the knit were created through the process of natural dye, sourcing colours from local waste streams, such as left over onion skins from local restaurants and rusty nails kept from the palettes. This woollen covering is completely detachable so that it can be easily washed and taken off if necessary, and is held in place though old bike inner tubes which have been tightened and fixed to the pallet.
Designers: John van Huenen, Andrew Wilkie, Stephanie Ward, Ursula Davy, & Hannah Hutchinson

Drinkable Sea Water
Before you scream ‘absurd’, let me tell you that I am talking about Puri – a sea water desalinating bottle. There are several ways to remove saline from sea water, for example evaporation, vapor-pressure, and ion-exchange membrane method but all of them are not practical for use on a life raft or rescue boat and require big equipments. The Puri on the other hand is a slim portable bottle that works with a pumping action. Take a look at its video below.
Puri is a 2013 IDEA Design Awards entry.
