I do, and then I send the client their revision.

Twelve-Year-Old Hacker Traded Secrets for Video Games

by james_fudge

A 12-year-old Canadian boy reportedly was the mastermind behind a hack that brought down government web sites during the 2012 Quebec student protests, according to an RT.com report.

The unnamed fifth grader managed to take down multiple Canadian government web sites including the Quebec Institute of Public Health, and even Chilean government site. His targets were down for several days, according to reports, even as police clashed with college students in the streets over tuition hikes in a 2012 protest.

Pixar’s Video Game Story

by Steve Napierski
Pixar's Video Game Story

I understand that Woody is suppose to be John Marston from Red Dead Redemption, but I keep seeing Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead. Whatever…

Okay, let’s break down the Pixar characters and who they are suppose to be portraying. Buzz Lightyear, from Toy Story, as Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series. Carl Fredricksen, from Up, as “Old Snake” from Metal Gear Solid 4. Remy and Alfredo Linguini, from Ratatouille, are Wander and a colossi from Shadow of the Colossus. James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mary “Boo” Gibbs, from Monsters, Inc., are Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us. I already explained who Sheriff Woody Pride was and lastly, Merida, from Brave, as Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series. Ugh…

Man, putting all the details about which Pixar character is which video game character took longer than I expected to type, but it was worth it. And I learned what Boo’s last name was in the process. So it wasn’t all for nothing.

31 Days of Halloween SE: The Sandman is back today in SANDMAN OVERTURE #1

by Heidi MacDonald

He’s back. And he’s being written by his rightful author. The Sandman, one of the most beloved and groundbreaking characters in comics history, the moody member of the Endless who made it safe to be a goth in comics and secured Neil Gaiman as one of the greatest living mythmakers, is returning in a 25th Anniversary event: Sandman: Overture is a six issue mini series written by Sandman creator  Gaiman and drawn by J.H Williams that reveals one of the great unknown stories of the Sandman-verse; just what was the battle that had Morpheus so drained him as issue #1 began?

For those looking to get into the Sandman mythos, a digital comics sale is on, with every issue of the original 75 issue run on sale for 99 cents until November 4th.

SANDMAN_email_blast-580_526f1b0d442c78.12161950.jpg

For those already enmeshed in Sandman’s complex mythology, all you need to know is that old favorites The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny will all be in the story.

Gaiman’s been spitting out impish observations in various interviews, like this from the CBR preview (which we knicked below):

“People have often asked me what happened to Morpheus to make it possible for him to be captured in THE SANDMAN #1,” Gaiman said. “And now they get to find out. And finding out, they get to learn secrets of the Endless that I’ve kept to myself for 25 years. Family secrets. And I should warn you: one of the Endless dies on page five.”

But these aren’t the only secrets Gaiman has in waiting — although the rest may have to wait anther 25 years: “If we ever get to the 50th anniversary, I may tell the story of how the character of Delight became Delirium, or the story of how the first Despair died,” Gaiman told Fast Company.. “But that’s the 50th anniversary, so there’s plenty of time

Or here what he told the AP:

Gaiman said it wasn’t hard to get back on the bicycle, but now there’s a huge audience. Imagine, he said, “if the first time you learned to bicycle and had ridden your bicycle around it was just you,” and then “gradually a few people went ‘Look, I really like the way he rides the bicycle.’”

“It was a small, organic phenomenon, but over the years your bicycle riding had become kind of legendary. Now, you’re in a world in which 25 million people are going ‘Oh my god, he’s getting back on the bicycle!’ There’s a little bit of worrying how wobbly your bicycle riding is going to be.”

Our copy of the book is waiting in an envelope somewhere so while you wait for the review, here’s all the preview pages we could scrape together from bvarious sites, as well as the variant covers by Jim Lee and Dave McKean.

Arrow to Host A Firefly Family Reunion

by Susana Polo

The joke about Arrow as the place every science fiction television actor is going to finance their kitchen remodeling only gets funnier as the correlation grows.

The show has already gathered former stars of Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Angel and Farscape, and with Summer Glau‘s addition to the cast as recurring character Isabel Rochev, Firefly as well. But Glau won’t be the only castmember to make it over, nor the only person to play a member of the Tam family. That’s right, Sean Maher is going to be on Arrow. As a supervillain.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Maher will guest star as the evil Mark Scheffer, better known as DC Comics supervillain Shrapnel, a serial bomber who places Starling City in a grip of terror and threatens the life of Sebastian Blood.

In the DC Comics universe, Shrapnel’s backstory isn’t fully known, though it has been established that he was at one point married with two daughters. Made of metal, Shrapnel’s powers are superhuman strength and stamina.

A serial bomber/assassin is a far cry from the timid (but slowly leveling up in badassery) and principled Doctor Simon Tam, and for sure, as a villain there’s no guarantee that he and Summer Glau will even share scenes. Still, hopefully they at least get to catch up on set for a while. Maher’s episode will be the 10th episode of this season, airing in the middle of December.

Gandalf Branches out to Blocking New York City Pedestrian Bridges

Pretty great! "Come on Gandalf you stopped a Balrog, you can stop a tourist."

When I heard Improv Everywhere had a guy dressed up as Gandalf shouting “you shall not pass” at folks in Central Park, I assumed the video would make me cringe, but this Gandalf is just so good natured about absolutely nobody stopping when he asks them to that I’m actually pretty charmed.

San Diego 2014 press reg is open! Join Team Beat!

by Heidi MacDonald

201310220416.jpg
It is never too soon to fret about San Diego Comic-Con! We’ve already had badge PRE-REGISTRATION, Film Festival registration, professional registration, and now press registration has opened. There are quite a few changes this year—documentary film crews will not get press badges, but will be approved to buy badges. I guess there were a lot of them? Also people attending as part of an outlet need to say that from the start.

So, people, even though we have a mere eight months to go, if you are interested in covering SDCC for The Beat, you’d better let me know now. As an accredited outlet, I’ve always been able to get writers in after the deadline, but there’s no telling if that will be allowed any more. So plan ahead! If you’re interested, shoot me a line at comicsbeat at gmail.com. But please be serious about it: covering the show is a ton of fun and gets you some amazing access (sometimes) but it is also hard, hard work. Look at these calluses.

Attack on Swiss Roll

by Boke Nasu
attack on roll cake.jpg

Humanity has cowered in fear under the shadow of the titans for long enough! The AmiAmi offices are launching an all-out counterattack with swiss roll maker Happy Priroll leading the charge. Let’s just hope we don’t bite off more than we can chew…

attack on roll cake (2).jpg

Quick, strike while its back is turned! Or first target came with a bullseye printed on its weak point, though the tricky part would be carving it up into equal portions for the blog team.

attack on roll cake (3).jpg

You don’t need Plug in Blades to cut through sponge this soft.

attack on roll cake 1.jpg

If only real Titans were made out of cake. Imagine slicing off piece after delicious piece of giant-sized goodness, only to have it regenerate faster than you could pack it away That reminds me, I need to hit up an all-you-can-eat dessert buffet sometime soon...

attack on roll cake (1).jpg

Hanji, you can finally put your research to rest--it turns out that Titans are actually filled with cream. Mystery solved!

Aside from the Colossal Titan, Happy Priroll is also offering designs with the Survey Corps characters or personal photographs. Live the dream and have your face printed next to Levi Heichou! Then devour him to the horror of your friends. It’s truly a beautiful cruel world where you can have your cake and eat it too.

Mickey Mouse Animated Short “‘O Sole Minnie” Just Released

by John Frost
I love the expressions in this frame.

I love the expressions in this frame.

The latest Mickey Mouse Animated Short “‘O Sole Minnie” was just released by Disney. It features a wonderful story of Mickey Mouse courtship of Minnie Mouse in the beautiful Venice Italy. Plus there are a couple surprise cameos to keep an eye out for including the facade of “it’s a small world”, the street address of WDI (1401 at 0:07), plus the return of an old friend.

It’s great to see Willy the opera singing whale back again. Maybe another short in his future, we can hope? What other obscure Disney characters need their own animated short?
