Set Pictures for LEGO Ideas 21110 Research Institute [NEWS]

by Caylin
Caseymalone

DO NOT READ THE REST OF THIS COMMENT UNLESS YOU WANT TO HAVE LEGOS RUINED FOR YOU:

This would be so much cooler if Lego didn't have the fucking waist outline on their women minifig torsos. I noticed this a few months ago (I had NEVER noticed it before, but Lego's been doing it FOREVER) and it's been straight up embarrassing ever since.

With the announcement of 10242 Mini Cooper, we missed covering LEGO Idea’s announcement of their next set: 21110 Research Institute, based off of Ellen Kooijman’s Female Minifigure set.

LEGO sent Ellen an advance copy of the set, which she has revealed on her blog. She takes us step by step through the box art, the construction, and includes observations about her profession and the stories the vignettes tell.

I wanted to highlight, too, this fantastic telescope design for the astronomer. I am so excited for this set to come out!

There doesn’t seem to be word yet on pricing or when it will be available, though it appears to be on target for an August release.

Couch Potatoes: Saving the world, one snack at a time!

by Iain

Here’s a fiendishly clever little concept from Angus MacLane, the guy that made character building more accessible by dreaming up CubeDudes. And like CubeDudes, I suspect this pattern is destined to be widely imitated – with or without the couches. Each vignette features a brick-built superhero or screen character kicking back after a long day’s superheroing (…or in some cases, chestbursting).

Angus hopes to continue the series over the coming months, with even more examples of superhuman relaxation. And if Destro’s demeanor is any indication, I suspect the villains will turn out to be having a worse day than the heroes!

This made me indescribably happy.

They say that you should be careful what you wish for, but I get so jealous of Casey’s haters. Not just that he has so many, but that he inspires such passion in them. Hatred of Casey Malone is a doorway through which beautiful things enter this universe.

frozen coconut limeade

frozen coconut limeade

New York City is a terrible place to summer. Whereas some water-bound towns have cool breezes rolling in off the ocean all day, we can better rely on the hot exhale of garbage trucks. Offices are set to roughly the same temperature as a polar ice cap, but subway platforms are so unfathomably sweltering that on my first day in NYC 14 years ago, I — adorably, like the wee baby New Yorker I was — uttered the words, “Is this even legal?” It’s a rare day that you don’t walk down the sidewalk and have a window a/c unit drip you-don’t-want-to-know run-off on your head. Flip-flops may cool your feet outside, but you may never recover from seeing the new color of your toes at the end of a day, and it always seems like everyone but me has Summer Fridays. The city tries, it really does, to make things more livable: the 14 beaches are free, there are dozens and dozens of free public pools, something like a zillion sprinkler parks, and you know all those endless photos you see of children frolicking in spraying fire hydrants? Hardly a symbol urban decay, it’s actually legal and encouraged. But the fact is that from July 4th on (and possibly earlier this year), anyone that has the means to be elsewhere is, and the rest of us plebes schvitz it out on the pavement.

And this summer, we’re going to do it grandly. We are going to embrace the heat. We are going to pretend we are someplace tropical and glamorous. Our summer house awaits… uh, in the blender.

Julius von Brunk (Baron von Brunk) is such a massive console gaming fan, he decided that the last thing he should see at night should be the Spiritual Stones from Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. So he built this working lamp containing a transparent mosaic of each stone, all harmoniously capped off by a Triforce…

Two men arrested for stealing teen’s ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ card collection

Two 20-year-old men were arrested this week in Kōbe, Japan, on charges that they stole their teenage friend’s Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. Kōbe Shinbun NEXT reports, via Anime News Network, that the men showed up at the home of their 15-year-old pal on Feb. 18, only to discover he wasn’t there. So, naturally, being friends and all, […]

1. Tom Whalen, please stop, you're bad.

2. Kevin Tong is one of the most creative and technically accomplished poster artists out there and this is like such a weird, stiff Martin Ansen rip-off that they must have given him like an extremely short time to do this or something.

3. Ken Taylor's piece is Diet Daniel Danger.

Cloud Cuckoopocalypse

by Iain

Being the only builder gutsy enough ever to attempt a minifig scaled version of Howl’s moving castle, it’s comes as no surprise to discover that Imagine Rigney was behind this mind-bending recreation of the fall of Cloud Cuckoo Land from The LEGO Movie

But the diorama just wouldn’t be complete without our heros escaping in the Bat Submarine. So he build that too, naturally. Awesome!

This makes me really wish LEGO would put out more official sets based on that particular region of the LEGO Movie universe. However, if anyone suggests the above creations be submitted as projects to the Lego Ideas site, be warned: I will reach through the screen and slap you!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

NSFW Spider-Man statue removed after arousing complaints

Sometimes your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man can get a bit too friendly. Case in point: the sculpture of the wall-crawler by Eunsuk Yoo that was (ahem) erected last year at the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan, South Korea. As you can see from the decidedly not-safe-for-work photos below, courtesy of Kotaku, Peter Parker’s spider-sense isn’t the […]

10 Second Studio Tour: Tattly

by Maxwell Tielman

I can be a bit of a commitment-phobe—at least when it comes to tattoos. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a crotchety cook, up in arms about all the kids these days gettin’ tatted—on the contrary, I do love a good tattoo. It’s just that, personally, I know I’m way too indecisive to make the leap to full-on ink. This is why I’ve fallen so madly in love with Tattly, the Brooklyn-based temporary tattoo company started by Tina Roth Eisenberg. With a collection of hundreds of artist-designed tattoos to choose from, Tattly’s temporary philosophy opens the doors for self expression and day-by-day experimentation. This week, we had the pleasure of dropping into the Tattly HQ—a bustling, friendly studio space in DUMBO. Filled with wonderful people, laughter and (of course) tons of tattoos, the Tattly office is exactly what you’d expect from such a fabulous company. Check out some of the highlights of our visit above or see all the stills and outtakes after the jump! —Max

Doyle estate insists Sherlock Holmes remains under copyright

The estate of Arthur Conan Doyle asked a seemingly unsympathetic Seventh Circuit on Thursday to overturn a lower-court ruling that the elements from the first 50 Sherlock Holmes stories have lapsed into the public domain in the United States. According to Law 360, estate attorney Benjamin Allison insisted that U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo erred […]

My Two Graduation Speeches

by Eugene

It’s graduation season once again! In case you are still in need of life-advice, here is the entire collection of my award winning (not really) commencement speeches — the first is from my old high school, Lexington, MA, in 2009, and the second is from my alma mater, Hampshire College, in 2012. If you watch both, along with your years and years of studying stuff, you should have the building-blocks of leading a happy, fulfilled life:

Industrial design

by Iain

Microscale building is most commonly associated with the giant collaborative ‘Micropolis’ city displays at events like Brickworld, where the focus is on gleaming modern architecture. So it’s refreshing to see Flickr member HOEFOL going seriously old school with microscale models of structures from the industrial revolution.

Which of course means factories, mills and a lot of smoke stacks:

But if you weren’t fortunate enough to live in the big city with all those rats and consumption, you might have lived in a farmhouse like one of these (with just the rats):

Not exactly contemporaneous with the others, but here’s a bonus scene entitled “Stranded”. Yup, not even HOEFOL’s cute little canal barge is gonna be able to get you out of this situation!

So much clever part usage in these scenes. I was particularly impressed by the inclusion of window sills, the recessing of the doorways, and use of flowers for the surf effect in that last creation.

strawberry rhubarb breakfast crisp bars

Look, I have no business giving dating advice. Or marital advice. I didn’t, like, scope the scene or learn the rules or think big thoughts about what kind of person would be the right person for me when I walked into a bar 11 years ago and met this guy for a drink. Nevertheless, if you were to try isolate a single trait essential in a life partnership, I think you should look for a person who is pro-whim — that is, encourages you to have whims and pursue them, for better or for worse. Does that sound too abstract? Okay, fine; let me propose instead the Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Bar Test, which should be enlisted as follows. 1. Find a potential mate. 2. Say, “Do I need to good reason to make strawberry-rhubarb pie bars?” 3. If they answer, as mine did on Monday, “Nope. I think they’re always welcome,” you’re probably on the right track. If nothing else, your weekend is about to get tastier.

mix the dry ingredients right in the pan
add the butter

I’d been daydreaming about a late spring riff on an apple-crisp-in-the-pan bars since I got the One Bowl Baking book last fall. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a pie-like cookie bar I didn’t like, but still, these made me nervous because they seemed so (ewww) wholesome. There are more whole grains than white flour, less sugar and less butter than any other cookie bar I’ve ever made. How could this be good? Silly Deb, I should have just trusted the author implicitly. Yvonne Ruperti is a former Cook’s Illustrated writer, America’s Test Kitchen on-air host and bakery owner, so you could say she knows a few things about baking.
