Wowcraft episode 4: Training Dummy

by (Sarah Pine)
The latest episode of CarBot Animations' wonderful series, Wowcraft, is now available. In its fourth installment, we depart from our orc friend and his adventures in Durotar to focus on his purple, long-eared enemies up north. Yes, I'm talking about the night elves, and episode four is all about a struggling night elf hunter who is clearly attacking a training dummy that's a few levels (or fifty) above his own, to disastrous consequences.

I'm really enjoying these little shorts from CarBot. They're a loving, light-hearted bit of fun at WoW's expense, and I particularly like the mount gag at the end. Where does my druid keep those 150 giant beasts (plus enormous kite--seriously, that thing is huge) that she can call on to cart her around the world? And, more importantly, why does she bother, when she can turn into a bird? The world may never know.

5 Ways to Deal With Dinner Party Guests Who Won't Put Down Their Phones

by Anjali Prasertong
Pin it button

It's hard to think about dinner parties before the age of smartphones and social media without a bit of nostalgic wonder. Did we really all sit around tables looking at each other rather than our tiny screens? We just ate the food instead of Instagramming it first?

As we have become more accustomed to being constantly connected, the etiquette around cell phone use in social situations has relaxed, which means it's not unheard of to invite friends over for a nice dinner, only to have them spend the evening constantly checking their phones. What's a frustrated host to do? I spoke with a couple experts to get their advice on different ways to deal with those dinner party guests who seem more interested in screen time than face time.

who is this brilliant man

s-c-i-guy:
His name is Jacque Fresco. He’s a futurist and social engineer. He lectures his views on sustainable cities, energy efficiency, natural-resource management, and the role of science in society, while being entirely self-taught.

He’s also the founder of the Venus Project, an organization that advocates a resource-based economy. The project combines Fresco’s versions of sustainable development, natural resource management, energy efficiency, and advanced automation in a global socioeconomic system based on social cooperation and scientific methodology.

As you can tell he’s a pretty badass dude.

Warcraft movie to have 20 months of post-production

by (Matthew Rossi)
In an interview with Crave Online, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull was asked about the upcoming Warcraft movie, which has already finished shooting but will not be released until 2016. Part of the reason for this long period of post-production is apparently technical.

We wanted to make sure that we got that right, but there are some sequences and some things that Duncan Jones has done that are truly on the cutting edge. You want to have plenty of time to make sure that we dial those in. So by the time they get home and set up, it'll be a little less than two years. It'll be about 20 months but we really want to take our time and get this right because the technology that's employed really is some next generation stuff.

Tull also mentioned that the Warcraft movie will have a more linear plot than, say Moon but that it's still a Duncan Jones movie. (If you've seen Moon you'll get what that means. If not, go see Moon.) Besides the Warcraft movie, there are details on what else Legendary is working on, so head on over if you're in the mood for movie details.

Artcraft presents The Spires of Arak

by (Matthew Rossi)
The Artcraft series returns, this time with a preview of an entire zone - the Spires of Arak. This time Gary Platner takes the lead, explaining all the various ways that Blizzard makes a zone in World of Warcraft, and how it came together for this zone. The Spires of Arak is the home zone for the Arakkoa, and its unusual design is based around the spires the bird-people make into their homes.
A lot of us contributed to the Spires of Arak, but ultimately Matt Sanders (exterior level designer) and Kelli Hoover (environment artist) were tasked with creating the zone. Kelli gathered resource material and started to do some paint-overs of our concepts in order to unify a distinctive new color palette. Meanwhile, Matt created the proof of concept in our editing tools in order to test ideas for creating large spiky rocks with the exterior terrain editor.
Head over to Blizzard's latest Artcraft post and see how they did for yourself.

Hilarious Ebook Scanning Error Replaces "Arms" With "Anus"

Well, this is awkward. You're reading a 19th-century romance novel where the plucky heroine is finally reunited with her lover, so she joyously flings "her anus around his neck." Wait, what? It turns out this is a surprisingly common turn of events in Google Books search. OCR, you sure have some kinky tastes.

Carrots Roasted in Coffee Beans From 'Coi'

by Kate Williams

I once went to a party featuring small bites from Daniel Patterson's Coi kitchen. (It was quite a party.) One was a version of this dish—carrots fragrant with coffee, served in a flavorful broth with minuscule herbs scattered on top. I remember being shocked at how much coffee flavor was packed into each piece of carrot and even more surprised that the pairing worked. Recreating the dish at home from Patterson's cookbook isn't difficult: you only need to roast whole carrots nestled in a bed of coffee beans. The other elements of the composed plate are equally simple. The broth is a blend of carrot and mandarin juice (juice it yourself if you can, or slide on over to your nearest juice bar to buy a couple bottles), seasoned lightly with vinegar, salt, and olive oil. A few slivers of raw carrot add crunch, and baby mint leaves add fragrance. It's a stunning bowl of food, and far, far easier than it looks.

Why I picked this recipe: I wanted to recreate the surprise I felt when first eating these carrots.

What worked: Coffee and carrots are a match made in heaven.

What didn't: Take care to follow the directions and roast the carrots until they are totally tender, otherwise the coffee flavor will overwhelm the natural sweetness of the vegetable.

Suggested tweaks: If you don't have access to Roman mint, you can use small, tender spearmint or peppermint leaves. You can easily scale this recipe up to make a larger portion or to serve more than four people, just make sure to use carrots that are about the same size so that they'll roast in the same amount of time.

As always with our Cook the Book feature, we have five (5) copies of cookbook to give away this week.

Valve Sponsors Work To Greatly Speed-Up Linux OpenGL Game Load Times

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes "Valve Software has sponsored some interesting improvements developed by LunarG for the Mesa OpenGL library on Linux for deferred and threaded GLSL shader compilation. What these changes mean for users of the open-source Linux graphics drivers when running their favorite games is that OpenGL games now load a lot faster. As an example, the time from starting Dota 2 until the time actually being within the game is reduced by about 20 seconds on an Intel system. While Direct3D has offered similar functionality for a while, OpenGL has not, which has given it a bad reputation with regard to game load times until all shaders are compiled and cached — fortunately it's now addressed for OpenGL if using the Mesa Linux graphics drivers on a supported game."
