Tech FAIL of the Day

Ever wonder why all 1,800 lights in Central Park are on 24/7 wasting electricity? Because some genius thought it would be a good idea to wire all the security cameras to the same power source as the light poles. Meaning the lights have to be on for the security cameras to work. Mr. Hewitt visited the office of his City Council representative, Helen Rosenthal. A member of her staff, Ned Terrace, dug into the matter. "The answer I received was that the power source for the streetlights is the same as the power source for the security cameras that the N.Y.P.D. has in Central Park, meaning that they have to be operating so that the cameras can remain on," Mr. Terrace wrote on Nov. 11. Hackers Have Stolen Millions In Bitcoin Using Only Phone Numbers

I don't know why people insist on calling these crooks "hackers." Scammers have been pulling this type of scam for years. The only thing that makes this case different is that crooks don't usually get access to millions of dollars worth of bitcoins. Thanks to cageymaru for the link. A hacker had faked his identity and transferred his phone number from T-Mobile to a carrier called Bandwidth that was linked to a Google Voice account in the hacker's possession. Once all the calls and messages to Kenna's number were being routed to them, the hacker(s) then reset the passwords for Kenna's email addresses by having the SMS codes sent to them (or, technically, to Kenna's number, newly in their possession). Within seven minutes of being locked out of his first account, Kenna was shut out of of up to 30 others, including two banks, PayPal, two bitcoin services — and, crucially, his Windows account, which was the key to his PC. 13 Things Rogue One Did Differently Than the Other Star Wars Movies

by Scott Collura

Rogue One! It’s a Star Wars film, that’s for sure, and yet in many ways it has eschewed the tropes of the standard “Saga” movies with a style all its own. Of course, that was the intention of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and director Gareth Edwards in introducing this first standalone Star Wars movie, i.e. a story set outside of the Skywalker family soap opera.

So let’s take a look at some of the things Rogue One did differently than the rest of the Star Wars movies to date -- from little things like onscreen text changes to bigger stuff such as music, digital character creation, and

.

Yes indeed, some major spoilers follow.

That’s right -- it never says “Star Wars” during the opening of the film. The traditional Lucasfilm logo followed by the full screen “Star Wars” and the blaring fanfare just isn’t a part of Rogue One. And when the Rogue One title (finally) appears onscreen, there’s nary a sign of the subtitle “A Star Wars Story.” It’s just “Rogue One.” And it’s pretty cool.

How Rogue One Sets Up Star Wars: A New Hope

by Terri Schwartz

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is more than just a prequel; it's an answer to a question that's been lingering in the Star Wars universe since the opening crawl in A New Hope first ran in 1977.

"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire," the set-up for the first Star Wars film reads. "During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star."

But Rogue One goes farther than just showing the story behind those pivotal three sentences. Here's a breakdown of all the ways the new Star Wars film sets up events that play out in A New Hope. Full spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as A New Hope and Return of the Jedi, continue below. Also make sure to check out IGN's review of Rogue One, and see if you caught all the Easter eggs, references and trivia!

NASA Successfully Grows Space Lettuce

by Vince Ingenito

For the first time, NASA has successfully grown and harvested fresh greens in space.

In a post on the official NASA homepage, astronaut Shane Kimbrough began nurturing six romaine lettuce seedlings aboard the International Space Station on October 25, and on December 2, he enjoyed the first fruits of his labor as a "mid-afternoon snack."

The grow is part of NASA's "Veggie" experiment, which acknowledges that "future long-duration space missions will require crew members to grow their own food, so understanding how plants respond to microgravity is an important step toward that goal."

How Rogue One Included a Couple of Surprising Cameos

by Alex Gilyadov

Warning: spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ahead.

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards went through a lot effort to include two particular cameos in the film.

In the new film, Garven Dreis/Red Leader (the late Drewe Henley) and Jon Vander/Gold Leader (Angus MacInnes) show up looking exactly like they did nearly 40 years ago in the original Star Wars. While speaking to RadioTimes, Edwards revealed that he was able to pull these scenes off by finding unused footage from Star Wars discovered in the archives at Skywalker Ranch.

Explained Edwards, "We’re walking around, and doing all the cool things and looking at the Millennium Falcon and trying on Han Solo’s jacket and things like that, in the back at the bottom was all these cans of film. And we said ‘what are they?’ and they said ‘Oh, it’s Star Wars.’"

Rogue One: What’s the Deal with *That* Castle?

by Scott Collura

Spoilers follow for Rogue One.

So Darth Vader’s castle is in the new Star Wars movie… how about that, eh!? My kid, upon seeing it, called out “the Tower of Orthanc!” I get that, only the Tower of Orthanc didn’t sit amid treacherous lava rivers on a planet of death and horror. Darth Vader’s home, apparently, does.

Because yes, the castle is on Mustafar, that awful world where the Sith Lord’s final transformation from Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader took place as he battled Obi-Wan Kenobi and lost several limbs, and his soul, for his trouble. (Oddly, while Rogue One goes out of its way to tag each planet’s name with onscreen titles, Mustafar is not specifically named. But Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo recently all but confirmed that’s where the castle is located.)

You can play SteamVR games using a PlayStation VR headset

by David Craddock

Trinus PSVR is an unofficial driver that lets you play virtually any SteamVR game using Sony's PlayStation VR headset.

"Trinus PSVR lets you play PC games using your Playstation PSVR headset," reads the Trinus website. "This is an early stage version, it supports SteamVR games (without VR controllers) and non-VR games (through mouse emulation)."

To get started, head to the Trinus website and download the driver. Run setup, then go into display settings and set up extended displays so the PC knows to output to your PSVR. Make sure to set up SteamVR control to track head movement.

Trinus' driver provides an attractive alternative for players interested in VR games on PC but decidedly uninterested in shelling out $600 for an Oculus Rift or $800 for HTC Vive. PSVR only costs $400 and, provided Trinus continues to roll out updates, has access to a growing number of VR games made for PC.
