PS5 Will Be Better For The Environment

Sony has committed to making the next PlayStation more green. In a note on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan committed to the UN's Playing for the Planet alliance. The UN Environment Committee initiative intends to partner with the video game industry to help make it more sustainable.

Ryan promised that the "next generation PlayStation console" will be able to suspend gameplay with a lower power consumption. One million PS5 users enabling the feature would save enough electricity to power about 1,000 homes. He said the company will also be conducting a carbon footprint assessment for its gaming services and looking into energy efficient measures at data centers.

Sony will also be working on a variety of messaging initiatives, starting with making sure to inform consumers on energy-saving features in their consoles. It will be providing reference info for developers who want to make games that revolve around sustainability. Finally, it's looking into PS VR applications that could help raise awareness about climate issues.

The company also boasts that it has already been revising its production to become more energy efficient. Revisions to the PlayStation 4 have already saved an estimated 16 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Sony estimates that the total number will rise to 29 million metric tons over the next ten years, which for comparison is equivalent to the entire nation of Denmark in 2017.

"There is an undeniable opportunity for leaders in the games industry to take a stand and support the UN Environment team by communicating the importance of preserving natural resources for generations to come," Ryan said. "At PlayStation, we believe games have the power to ignite social change through educating people, evoking emotions, and inspiring hope. We could not be more proud to be part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and the commitments announced. We look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve together."

Hot On The Heels Of Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass Revealed With 350 Games And Apps

Google has officially unwrapped its "Google Play Pass," the Android answer to the recently launched Apple Arcade. The Play Pass grants you access to 350 apps and games, without ads or in-app purchases, for a single subscription rate.

It's launching this week in the United States. You can sample a 10-day free trial now. After that, subscriptions will regularly be $5 per month, but the company is offering a promotional rate of $2 per month for the first 12 months, after which it will revert to the $5 rate.

A promotional trailer for the service shows the games Monument Valley 2, Stardew Valley, Old Man's Journey, and Limbo, among others. But Google Play Pass differentiates itself from Apple Arcade by offering a selection of non-game apps as well, like Photo Studio Pro, ISS HD Live, and AccuWeather.

New games and apps will be added monthly. The Play Store has also added a dedicated Play Pass tab, and any apps or games marked with a Play Pass "ticket" while you browse are included. You can also share your subscription with up to five other family members.

We first heard of the Play Pass in August, and the $5 price point was known then. This official announcement offers a lower introductory rate, a larger selection of apps than we'd previously known, and the imminent launch.

Peter Dinklage Wins Fourth Emmy Award For Game Of Thrones, And That's A New Record

Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage is an Emmy-winner yet again. The actor, who plays Tyrion Lannister on HBO's fantasy show, picked up his fourth Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series win at the 71st Emmy Awards. That is a new record for most wins in that category.

Dinklage was tied with Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman and won three Outstanding Support Actor in a Drama Series awards for his performance in the AMC TV show.

This year is different for Dinklage, however, as Game of Thrones is now finished. In his acceptance speech, Dinklage spoke about the brilliance of Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, and how Dinklage didn't know what he was getting into at the start of the show.

"I count myself so fortunate to be a member of a community that is all about tolerance and diversity, because nowhere else could I be standing on a stage like this," the actor said, as reported by Deadline. "It's been about 10 years, all said and done, from the moment I met [series creators] David [Benoiff] and Dan [Weiss] till now. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew that David and Dan were quite brilliant…We did nothing but sweat, we did nothing but laugh. Dave and Dan, we literally walked through fire and ice for you--literally--and I would do it all again in a heartbeat."

Dinklage won his first Emmy for Game of Thrones back in 2011. He is the only member of the Game of Thrones cast to win an Emmy, though a number of the cast--including Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Kit Harington, among others--have received nominations over the years.

Jojo Rabbit Review: The Movie About Nazis We Need Right Now

Think of a movie about how a cruel and unforgiving society can turn even the most good-hearted individual into a hateful and extremist person with dangerous ideals, a movie that hits too close to home in 2019. No, not Joker--we're talking about the latest film from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. It's Jojo Rabbit, this generation's definitive political satire starring an imaginary Hitler.

Meet Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis), a young German kid toward the end of WWII. Germany is losing and morale is low, but this little Nazi refuses to accept reality. In a hilarious opening credits sequence set to the German version of the Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," we see Jojo jumping with glee, running through his town saying "Heil Hitler" to everyone he sees as he makes his way toward Nazi summer camp. Jojo is a Nazi superfan, with posters of Adolf Hitler decorating his bedroom like he was a rockstar, something Waititi plays with as the credits sequence is cut with actual footage of German citizens losing their minds and screaming in joy at the sight of Hitler in a weird reflection of Beatlemania.

Oh, and Jojo--like many kids--has an imaginary friend, only his is a way funnier and kinda likeable version of the Führer played by Waititi himself, who gives Jojo pep-talks, but still remains a psychotic dictator.

The first act of the movie deals with Jojo going to Hitler Youth camp, where he will learn valuable and fun lessons like how to throw grenades, stab people, and shoot guns. Waititi knows this is a very difficult movie to pull off, but he manages to make the whole thing absolutely hilarious, and also kind of adorable, through its irreverence and absurdity. Sure, the instructors, who include a scene-stealing Rebel Wilson playing a laid back but very evil administrator, and Sam Rockwell as yet another racist with power who may be hiding a good person somewhere inside, are still Nazi sadists who laugh at the millions dying in the war. But the kids are played as adorable and innocent fools who joke about killing people because it's what their indoctrinated ideology tells them to do. They don't know any better.

Mihai Malaimare Jr.'s symmetrical cinematography and Michael Giacchino's gleeful score work together to establish a Wes Anderson-esque atmosphere of childlike wonder that brings to mind The Grand Budapest Hotel. Though he doesn't shy away from showing the horrors of the war, Waititi isn't interested in exploring the Holocaust or any actual WWII battles. For the most part, the Nazis in the movie are simply buffoons. This movie doesn't feel the need to explain that Nazis are bad; we know that already. Instead, it shows the inherent stupidity of violent and radical ideologies, and how they can bring out the worst in people, and even corrupt the good at heart.

That's why, when Jojo discovers that his mom (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl named Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) in his attic, his little swastika-loving world gets turned upside down. At first, he's understandably terrified--what if she has psychic powers and wants to drink his blood like a vampire, as imaginary Hitler suggests? The problems arise when Jojo begins to realize he likes Elsa, much to Hitler's dismay. Herein lies the core of Jojo Rabbit, as its titular character slowly starts to realize that his worship of Nazi ideology may have been misplaced. Waititi is not interested in showing the appeal of hate and violence or how easily it spreads, but how silly and small it is compared to love and understanding. This is a movie not about fighting what we hate, but about saving what we love.

Waititi keeps proving he knows how to find the best young actors in the business, with Roman Griffin Davis joining Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) and James Rolleston (Boy, The Breaker Upperers) as great, untested talent making big impressions. Davis perfectly shows the character's innocence, cheerfulness, and pain. He and Waititi play off each other wonderfully, creating some of the best scenes in the movie--especially once Jojo starts to question whether Hitler is actually a nice person. Johansson gives one of the best performances of her career, always carrying a smile that hides a deep and undeniable sadness caused by a world in ruins.

McKenzie was already one of the big standouts last year thanks to Debra Granik's drama Leave No Trace, and her performance as Elsa shows why you should be paying attention to her career. Though Jojo Rabbit relies on bringing 2019 humor to '40s politics for its comedy, McKenzie's Elsa doesn't feel like a girl from 2019 living in the '40s. Elsa is rightly scared out of her mind at the prospect of the swastika-loving boy telling on her, but she is not above calling Jojo out for his misguided beliefs or mocking his foolish investigation into the evil powers Jewish people supposedly have.

Jojo Rabbit could have easily been a disaster, but Taika Waititi's ability to mix satire with emotion makes it all work. In a time when hate is everywhere and violent ideologies are spreading like wildfire, Jojo Rabbit shows that opening our hearts to love and hope can shine a light on even the darkest moments.

Battlestar Galactica And Saved By The Bell TV Reboots Are On The Way

A reboot of the classic sci-fi franchise Battlestar Galactica is on the way. It has been reported that NBCUniversal is developing the new show for its upcoming streaming platform, which it has named Peacock.

According to Deadline, the new version of Battlestar Galactica is being developed by Sam Esmail, who created the award-winning Mr Robot and produced and directed Amazon's acclaimed thriller Homecoming. The new version of BSG is described as "original series," and while further details about the show are not currently known, Deadline's sources states that Esmail is a big fan of the franchise.

The original version of Battlestar Galactica was broadcast in 1978 and was part of the wave of sci-fi shows and movies that followed in the wake of Star Wars. Syfy produced a highly acclaimed TV reimagining in 2003, which ran for four seasons and was followed by the short-lived spinoff Caprica in 2010. In 2016, it was rumored that Universal was working on a new movie version.

Battlestar Galactica isn't the only classic TV property on the way to Peacock. It has also been reported that a new version of the '90s sitcom Saved By The Bell is in the works. According The Hollywood Reporter, original stars Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley set to return, with Mark-Paul Gosselaar and other former cast members currently in talks with the studio.

Peacock is set to launch in April 2020. It's the latest example of a major studio creating a streaming platform to release its own shows and movies, as opposed to than licensing them to rivals such as Netflix or Amazon. Disney+ and Apple TV+ both launch in November, with Warner's HBOMax set to arrive in spring 2020.

Killjoys Finale Ending Explained by Creator Michelle Lovretta

by Maureen Ryan

TV is bursting with reboots and revivals — so when are we returning to the Killjoys universe?

Well, all right, if you want to be a literal killjoy about it, it’s over. On Friday, Syfy aired the show’s romantic, action-packed and very satisfying series finale. And that appears to be that. But if you’ve been watching Killjoys faithfully, you are probably like most fans of Team Awesome Force — you want all these people to come back to your screen immediately.

It doesn't look like that’s going to happen, according to creator and executive producer Michelle Lovretta, who has other projects on her plate (though in the interview below, she doesn’t rule out comics, novelizations and the like). So at this point, we must focus on what we did get: Yalena “Dutch” Yardeen (Hannah John-Kamen), Johnny Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) and D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane) were a badass, quippy, wonderfully entertaining trio for the ages. The show’s core group of actors had the kind of rapport and chemistry that is all too rare, and Killjoys took what was so clear on the screen and ran with it for five whole seasons. Add in sly space villains, riotous prison ships, daring heists, messed-up families, unlikely romances and too many dangerous adventures to list, and, well, what more could a person want out of a TV show?

Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik to reunite in Fox comedy Carla

by Lynette Rice

If we can’t have them as Sheldon and Amy, at least we will have this: Fox has given a series commitment to a multi-camera sitcom that will reunite The Big Bang Theory stars Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik.

The popular duo will star in Carla, which is based on the U.K. series Miranda. Here’s the official logline from Warner Bros. TV, which will produce the comedy for Fox: “Carla (Bialik) is a 39-year-old woman who struggles every day against society and her mother to prove that you cannot have everything you want — and still be happy, which is why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a cat cafe in Louisville, Ky.”

Parsons and Bialik will also executive-produce the sitcom, which WBTV says was sold in a “highly competitive situation.”

Carla is an unapologetically big, broad multi-cam with a strong female point of view, pushing the format in a way that will be distinctive,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn in a statement. “With the A+ creative team, our partners at Warner Bros., led by the inimitable Peter Roth, and BBC Studios, we think we have something truly special here.”

Parsons is currently in production on the Netflix movie The Boys in the Band, opposite Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, and Matt Bomer. It will drop in 2020.

Bialik earned four Emmy nominations and a SAG Award nomination during her run playing Amy on TBBT. After the show’s series finale, Bialik signed a multifaceted deal with Warner Bros. TV Group that includes a two-year production deal for her company Sad Clown Productions.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings Filming Location Will Please Movie Fans

by Jesse Schedeen

Amazon Studios has revealed where its upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel series will be filming, and it's a location that should make fans of the movies very happy. New Zealand will once again serve as the backdrop for a journey into Middle-earth.

Amazon revealed that pre-production has begun on the series, with filming expected to commence in Auckland "in the coming months," according to a press release.

“As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is a home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff. And we’re happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings,” said showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay in a statement. “We are grateful to the people and the government of New Zealand and especially Auckland for supporting us during this pre-production phase. The abundant measure of Kiwi hospitality with which they have welcomed us has already made us feel right at home, and we are looking forward to deepening our partnership in the years to come.”

Stephen King's The Institute getting a limited TV series adaptation

by Nick Romano

It was only a matter of time before someone snatched up the rights to adapt Stephen King’s latest novel, The Institute, and that someone is a duo.

As of Tuesday, not even a full 24 hours since The Institute hit store shelves, David E. Kelley of Big Little Lies and Jack Bender of Lost are announced to develop the story into a limited TV series for Spyglass Media Group.

The book is basically an X-Men situation, only if Charles Xavier murdered the parents of all his future mutant pupils before forcibly relocating them to his School for Gifted Youngsters. Luke Ellis, a boy with telekinesis, is one such youngster forced to the Institute, where a shady organization performs all sorts of tests on its supernaturally gifted kids… until they are no longer considered useful. Then their situation gets worse.

Broadway’s Tootsie star Santino Fontana narrates The Institute audiobook.

Kelley and Bender worked together previously on Audience Network’s Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s Bill Hodges Trilogy. A third season premiered on Tuesday. Bender will now direct The Institute, the series, and both he and Kelley will executive produce.

The news comes shortly after It Chapter Two, Hollywood’s latest King-based movie, hit theaters. A movie adaptation of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, the horror author’s 1999 novel, is also in development.

Tomb Raider Movie Sequel Gets A Release Date And Director

You haven't seen the last of Lara Croft on the big screen. A sequel to 2018's Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander is in the works. While the film is still relatively early in the process and no story details have been revealed, it's being reported that two significant steps have been taken toward the movie becoming a reality.

According to Deadline, MGM has officially dated the film for March 19, 2021, giving those involved over a year to get the Tomb Raider sequel made and ready for theaters. Additionally, the site says Ben Wheatley has been hired to direct the film. Wheatley has the movies Kill List and Free Fire to his name, along with episodes of Doctor Who and Strange Angel.

He's stepping in for Roar Uthaug, who directed the previous film but will not be returning. Joining Wheatley on the next movie is screenwriter Amy Jump and producers Graham King and Elizabeth Cantillon. Naturally, Vikander will be along for the ride reprising her role as Lara Croft.

This will be the fourth Tomb Raider film, but only the second in this particular incarnation. Angelina Jolie played the character in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its 2003 sequel. Vikander's first outing as the character, which was based on the current video game series made $275 million at the worldwide box office and was met with mixed reviews. In his review, GameSpot's Michael Rougeau called it "a pretty good action movie and a better than average video game adaptation," citing "smart story choices and a winning performance from Alicia Vikander."

Production on the Tomb Raider sequel is expected to start in early 2020.

Birds Of Prey Teaser Trailer Leaks, Shows Harley Quinn In Action

The first teaser trailer for Margot Robbie's new DC comic book movie, Birds of Prey, has arrived--though it wasn't intended to be seen just yet. A teaser trailer for the movie, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is set to show exclusively in theatres before It Chapter Two and isn't scheduled to be posted online, at least at this point in time.

However, it is 2019 and this is the internet, so it has leaked online. You can watch it below, at least until it gets pulled.

The clip begins with red balloons floating on-screen before Harley Quinn jumps in to destroy them with a giant hammer. "I'm so f***ing over clowns," she says in a reference to It Chapter Two. Both Birds of Prey and It Chapter are both produced by Warner Bros.

The trailer then cuts to an action sequence showing off more of the characters in Birds of Prey, including Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Ewan McGregor plays the villain, Black Mask.

Birds of Prey is still a long time away from release; it hits theatres on February 7, 2020. Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan is directing the movie.

We got our first look at Birds of Prey back in January, but this is time first time since that we're seeing something new. It will be the first of two DC movies released next year. It'll be followed by Wonder Woman 1984.

Every Stephen King Cameo, From It Chapter 2 To The Simpsons

The stories of Stephen King have been getting adapted into movies and TV shows for decades. It all started back in 1976 with the release of Carrie, a movie that is still regarded as one of the best horror films of all time. Almost as long as King's history of being a writer adapted for film, though, is his career as an actor.

Sure, he's never played a main role in anything. But however long before Stan Lee was popping up as a cameo in any number of Marvel Comics films, King was making appearances in projects based on his own works--and even some he had no creative involvement in. It all started with the 1981 George A. Romero movie Knightriders, in which he played the illustrious role of "Hoagie Man."

King's latest cameo comes in the form of an appearance in It Chapter 2, in which he plays the shopkeeper at an antique store. According to screenwriter Gary Dauberman, speaking during a press conference for the film, the role was written for King, even if they hadn't actually approached him about it. "I wrote it into the action line, you know, this guy, the shopkeeper and I said, 'seems to look a lot like Stephen King,'" he explained.

Interestingly enough, though, director Andy Muschietti claims King tried to talk him out of giving him the role. "I wanted him in the movie, so I offered him a cameo," the director recalled. "The first thing he said was, 'Well, you have to consider that I'm a jinx. Every movie that I'm in bombs.'" Still, King agreed in the end and took his place in the on-screen history of It.

Knowing how King sees his own history with movies, though, we've decided to take a look back. We've put together every single Stephen King cameo appearance from movies and TV. While there are some we should collectively forget--like his role in the TV miniseries version of the Shining--there are also some very interesting movies on his list of credits. Take a look at each of King's appearances below.

World of Warcraft Classic Players Are Very Politely Queuing For Quest Items

by Matt Purslow

Players of World of Warcraft Classic are forming polite queues to collect in-game quest items.

You may have already seen that World of Warcraft Classic has proven exceptionally popular, with 1 million viewers on Twitch and huge queues to actually access the servers and get playing. The result of so many people diving in is that substantially more people than usual are attempting to pick up quest items. But rather than cause a rabble and provide the item to the player who can hit the pick-up button the fastest, the community has organised itself into polite lines so that everyone has a chance at getting the item.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad Adds Nathan Fillion

by Terri Schwartz

A James Gunn favorite is joining his upcoming DC film, The Suicide Squad: Nathan Fillion.

Deadline reports Fillion will be playing an as-yet unrevealed role, saying the part is being "kept under wraps."

Fillion is one of Gunn's closest friends and has appeared in many of his projects. In addition to playing Bill Pardy in 2006's Slither and the Holy Avenger in 2010's Super, Fillion had a very CG-heavy cameo in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy as the "monstrous inmate" the Guardians face off against on Kyln.

Xiaomi Mi Band 4 review: A must-have budget fitness tracker under $50

by Harish Jonnalagadda

Xiaomi continues to dominate the wearable space, with the Mi Band 4 offering several upgrades.

Every year for the last three years, Xiaomi has rolled out exciting new features to its Mi Band series. Last year's Mi Band 3 retailed for just $25, offering a heart rate sensor, 5ATM water resistance, and a 0.78-inch OLED panel. The Chinese manufacturer dominates the wearable segment on the back of the Mi Band series, and it's easy to see why — there isn't another budget fitness band that gives you quite as many features.

Xiaomi is continuing that trend with the Mi Band 4. The overall design aesthetic is unchanged, but there are a few key upgrades that make the fitness band stand out: it is the first in the series to feature a color AMOLED screen, and the display itself is larger and is of a higher resolution. The band also has better workout tracking — including swimming — and it has the same weeks-long battery life as its predecessor.

Coming in at under $50, the Mi Band 4 is in a league of its own when talking about value. Here's why Xiaomi's fitness band is the best budget tracker around.

Hit your goals

Xiaomi Mi Band 4

$48 at Amazon

The best budget fitness band gets better.

The standout addition on the Mi Band 4 is the full-color AMOLED display: it is vibrant, has excellent contrast, and is easy to see under sunlight. You also get 50-meter water resistance, the ability to track more exercises, two weeks of usage between charges, continuous heart rate monitoring, and better sleep insights. Mi Fit lets you sync all the fitness data directly to Google Fit, and overall there isn't a fitness band for under $100 that comes close to the Mi Band 4.

The Good

  • AMOLED panel
  • 50-meter water resistance
  • Automatic heart rate detection
  • Weeks-long battery life
  • Highly customizable

The Bad

  • Charging cradle is easy to lose

Xiaomi Mi Band 4 What I like

At first glance, the Mi Band 4 is nearly indistinguishable from its predecessor. Both have the same design aesthetic, with Xiaomi making a few subtle changes. First up is the lack of an indent at the bottom of the screen that acted as the button for controlling the display. The Mi Band 4 has a smaller button that's located in the same position, but it sits flush with the body.

The key upgrade is the screen itself: the Mi Band 4 sports a 0.95-inch full-color AMOLED display that is absolutely fantastic. The color display gives the Mi Band 4 a leg up over every other fitness band in this segment. I had issues with sunlight legibility on the previous model, but that wasn't an issue on the Mi Band 4. With a maximum brightness of over 400nits, I was able to make out the contents on the screen even under intense glare.

If you're using a Mi Band 2 or Mi Band 3, you should upgrade just for the display alone.

The resolution is also higher at 240 x 120, and the screen has 2.5D curves and an anti-fingerprint coating to prevent smudges. And because of that color screen, you get greater freedom in customizing the watch faces. There's a selection of over 50 options in the Mi Fit app, and switching the watch face is straightforward: just pick the one you like, and hit Sync watch face, following which it will show up on your Mi Band 4. Some of the options look a lot like the watch faces you'd find on Samsung's Galaxy Fit series, and there's enough variety on offer that it should be able to find a watch face to suit your needs.

Even though the display is 33% larger than the Mi Band 3, the Mi Band 4 weighs just 22g. There are a few changes elsewhere: the magnetic connects that hook up to the charging cradle are now located at the back — just below the heart rate sensor. The silicone strap is unchanged from previous versions, and what it lacks in style it makes up for in comfort.

You can swipe up on the screen to see weather information, your daily fitness stats, unread notifications, get a heart rate reading, and manually initiate a workout. The Mi Band 4 has 50-meter water resistance and a 6-axis accelerometer, and Xiaomi has added a host of new workouts to the band's activity tracking. It is now able to track outdoor running, treadmill, cycling, walking, weight training, and swimming. The last option is particularly interesting; you'll be able to set the pool size, and the Mi Band 4 can identify various strokes, and measure the stroke rate, distance, as well as calories burned.

The Mi Band 4 does a much better job with activity tracking, and the ability to track swimming is a welcome addition. The fitness band is also great at mirroring incoming calls and other notifications to your wrist, and you can now set reminders and alarms. There's also the option to control music playback, and you can customize alerts for individual apps. If you don't want to get notifications on your wrist from a specific app, you can turn it off from the settings.

Another thing the Mi Band 4 does well is idle alerts. The band will vibrate if you're inactive for an hour, and you can even choose a custom vibration pattern for the alert. The customizability extends to other features as well: the Mi Band 4 has a heart rate sensor, and you can set the interval for the detection frequency. You can set the band to record your heart rate every minute, or do it at five, ten, and 30-minute intervals. If you set the interval to under 10 minutes, you will be able to create another alert that will trigger if the BPM goes over 100 when you're inactive.

There's also an option to automatically increase the detection frequency during a workout to get more accurate data, and a new feature that locks the band once you take it off your wrist. Honestly, the sheer number of customization options on offer make the Mi Band 4 a stellar product in this category.

Like previous models, the Mi Band 4 relies on Mi Fit to sync fitness data and sleep insights to a phone. The app is also how you change most of the settings on the fitness band, and select new watch faces. Mi Fit picked up a redesign earlier this year, and the interface is much more modern and easier to navigate. The key settings are easily accessible, and you get more customization options than you'll end up using. Best of all, Mi Fit lets you sync to Google Fit, so you can pull all your heart rate and daily activity data from the fitness band directly into Google Fit.

Mi Fit is much more streamlined and easy to use, and it still syncs with Google Fit.

There's now a lift-to-wake option that turns the display on when you raise the band to your face, and because this is Xiaomi you get to customize how sensitive the motion is before the display wakes up. I routinely have issues with this particular feature on the Fitbit Alta HR, but I set it to the sensitive setting on the Mi Band 4 and it has worked flawlessly. As with everything else, you get to set a schedule for the feature.

The Mi Band 4 is great at sleep insights as well, and you can choose for the band to record your heart rate when you're asleep. Continual heart rate monitoring will obviously affect the battery life by a significant margin, and with the automatic heart rate detection enabled during the day, I still got over a week's worth of battery life. The fitness band is able to record light and deep sleep — giving you a score out of 100 — and offer recommendations on how to get a better night's rest, but the insights aren't as detailed as what you get with Fitbit. That said, the Mi Band 4 costs half as much as the Inspire HR.

Battery life, in general, is just as great as the Mi Band 3, and you should easily get two weeks' worth of usage on a full charge.

Xiaomi Mi Band 4 What needs work

Honestly, there's very little that the Mi Band 4 gets wrong. For what you're paying for the fitness band, you're getting stellar value. My main issue with the Mi Band 4 is not the band itself, but the charging cradle: it is just as finicky as earlier models, and it is easy to lose. You have to remove the tracker from the silicone band and attach it to the cradle, and a full charge from zero takes just over two hours. That said, you'll only end up using it a few times every month, so it's not that big a deal.

While the changes to Mi Fit are welcome, it still doesn't have a community feature. You can add other Mi Band users as friends, but there's no way to participate in challenges or set collaborative goals.

Xiaomi Mi Band 4 Bottom line

The Mi Band 4 cements Xiaomi's position as the brand to beat in the budget wearable segment. The color AMOLED screen makes the Mi Band 4 that much more enticing, and you get better sunlight visibility and more options to customize the band to your tastes. The interface isn't laggy, you get a ton of new features and ability to track more workouts, and continual heart rate monitoring.

Combine all that with battery life that's measured in weeks and it's easy to see why the Mi Band 4 is the best budget fitness tracker available today. Mi Fit has also received a much-needed overhaul, and it's easier to view your daily activity and configure the Mi Band 4's settings. The ability to sync data with Google Fit is an added bonus.

The band itself is comfortable to wear all day, and there's a vast ecosystem of third-party options available if you want to switch out the silicone band for a more stylish alternative. Overall, there isn't another wearable that comes close to the Mi Band 4.

4.5 out of 5

The Mi Band 4 retails for just over $45, and while that's $15 more than its predecessor, the addition of the color AMOLED panel more than justify the added cost. You're not going to find another budget fitness band that offers quite the same combination of features and value for money.

A Quick Recap

Packing a child's lunch is an art and balancing healthy foods, tapping into your child's favorite menu items and including a good variety isn't easy. The Zuzuro Lunch Cooler comes with everything you need to pack a lot of food for your hungry student and keep it fresh and in place while they wait for the lunch bell. Its three meal containers let you send good-sized portions of fresh fruits and veggies or even leftovers. There is a designated drink pouch that holds at least two bottles of water, juice or other fun drinks and the insulated walls will keep them chilled enough to enjoy a few hours later. This insulated lunchbox has a few extra pockets to slip in napkins, plasticware or more treats to ensure your child has everything they need to enjoy a healthy, fun and fulfilling meal.

There are a few extra tools of the lunch trade we feel are important to mention. The Thermos Funtainer is a great way to break from traditional lunches and send hot foods with your child. We've tested how well this food jar keeps food both hot and cold and it keeps it well for about five hours before you can tell there has been a big temperature change. Though 10-ounces doesn't look like much, there is plenty of room inside to send soups, taco meat, mini corndogs and lots of other fun foods for lunch. Plus it fits nicely into most traditional lunchboxes.

Another great invention is bento boxes. These separate foods in one container to make it easier to see and find the entire meal while keeping food from spilling into each other. The Enther bento boxes have three sections with lids that are easy to get on and off while still keeping foods from spilling. You can get a bundle of twelve containers for under $15 which makes it easy to prepare lunches for the whole week at one time. The containers stack nicely, too. To make it easier to carry bento boxes to and from school, we recommend an insulated bento bag, like the Bentology Box Sleeve.

Loki Will Take Character to an Entirely New Part of the MCU

by Jim Vejvoda

Marvel's Loki is " taking Loki to an entirely new part of the MCU," it was announced during the Disney+' presentation at Friday's D23 Expo.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige announced the show's head writer Michael Waldron and director Kate Herron to the crowd of fans. "These are the people who make the shows," Feige praised.

"We’re taking Loki to an entirely new part of the MCU," Herron promised, adding that they can’t wait to spend six hours telling more of his story.

Waldron said Loki will "explore the questions we all have: where did Loki go after he picked up the Tesseract? Could Loki ever make a friend? And will the sun ever shine on him again?"

“This is a remarkably ambitious show we’re making,” Feige proclaimed.
