Keanu Reeves to star in a new The Matrix movie

by James Hibberd

Whoa: Keanu Reeves is going to re-enter The Matrix.

Warner Bros. is rebooting the cyber-action franchise with a new film starring Reeves and his former Matrix co-star Carrie-Anne Moss.

Lana Wachowski—the co-creator the original film—is set to write, direct and produce an all-new film.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.  “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” added Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

The move revives the franchise after a 16-year slumber. The previous trilogy launched with The Matrix in 1999, then followed with sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions 2003. Collectively the films have earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office.

Instinct canceled after 2 seasons

by Sydney Bucksbaum

CBS felt the instinct to cancel Instinct after two seasons.

Creator Michael Rauch revealed the news that the procedural drama will not be returning for a third season in a series of tweets.

“I’m very sad to relay the news that @instinctcbs won’t be renewed for a 3rd season,” Rauch wrote. “We will double up this Sunday and our season/series finale will be Aug 25.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The series creator then went on to thank the cast, crew, and “diehard fans for your love, loyalty & excellent taste (is it too soon to ask for a reboot?).”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Because only 11 episodes were filmed for season 2, Sunday will feature two new episodes and the final episode will air next Sunday, Aug. 25.

Instinct stars Alan Cumming as Dylan Reinhart, a former CIA operative who’s created a quieter life for himself as a professor and author of a best-selling book on abnormal behavior. When tenacious and resourceful NYPD detective Lizzie Needham (Bojana Novakovic) approaches him to help her solve a serial killer case, he gets lured back into the adrenaline filled world of law enforcement, and he and Lizzie realize that, together, they make the perfect team.

Star Novakovic took to Twitter to vent her frustrations over Instinct‘s cancelation. “This sucks balls,” she wrote.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Later that day, Cumming shared a post on Instagram to express his sadness over the cancelation and his gratitude for the show. “So the word is out. @instinctcbs will not be returning for a third season,” he wrote. “Almost exactly three years ago I was sent a galley copy of a book by @jamespattersonbooks and @howardroughan and then I met the show runner @mbr34 who was to adapt it for TV and I jumped in. And I’m still in, for two more episodes tomorrow and the last one ever next Sunday. And while I’m sorry I won’t be getting to play with @bojnovak and the rest of the amazing cast and crew again, I’m grateful for two seasons of fun and gore and feeling like a dandy thanks to @danlawsonstyle’s costumes, and selfies with corpses and vegan options at catering and Lala’s occasional guest appearances in the police station when she got bored in her basket beneath my desk.”

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness: Everything We Know About The MCU's First Horror Movie

Stephen Strange is back and is primed to go on a gothic adventure across the recently confirmed multiverse.

This year at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios blew the roof off of Hall H with a two-hour panel that featured announcement after announcement of their upcoming Phase 4 plans, from theatrical releases like Black Widow and The Eternals to Disney+ streaming TV shows like The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and Loki--but one of the upcoming projects stood apart from the rest, both as the only sequel in the mix, and as the first of its genre in the MCU's line up.

That's right, we're talking about the highly anticipated Doctor Strange 2--or, as we learned, officially titled Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. It's a followup to 2016's Doctor Strange, which first introduced Cumberbatch as the master of the mystic arts.

While the movie's release is still a ways off, we did manage to glean some interesting details about its plot and cast, which we've compiled here and will continue updating as more information trickles in.

Strange has some help

We've only had a few cast members confirmed, but you'll definitely recognize them.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange

  • Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff

He wasn't on stage during the presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but Benedict Wong is also very likely reprising the role of Wong for this movie.

We know when it's coming out

Prepare to journey into the multiverse on May 7, 2021.

Mysterio was right. Kind of.

The end of Spider-Man: Far From Home may have revealed that Quentin Beck's story about the multiverse was a total lie, but that doesn't necessarily mean the multiverse doesn't exist. We're not exactly sure what that means--or how the real multiverse will come into play--but hey, at least we know it's definitely a thing. Probably. Unless it's also a lie in this movie.

It will connect to Disney+

As of right now, this movie is the only confirmed link between the MCU proper and the Disney+ streaming shows with a direct tie to WandaVision, as confirmed by Feige during Comic-Con. We can definitely assume that more shows will link to more movies, but this is the only one we've had any level of confirmation for.

Whatever happens to Wanda during WandaVision will directly play into her role in Multiverse Of Madness--but it's worth noting that Wanda is the only part of that combo who was announced for the movie. Vision and Paul Bettany were not. So that may or may not bode well for Vision's post-WandaVision status quo.

It's the MCU's first horror movie

Phase 4 will continue Phase 3's tradition of experimenting with genre as Feige and director Scott Derrickson confirmed during Comic-Con that Multiverse Of Madness will be the MCU's "first scary movie," and that it will dip into the "gothic and horror" elements typical of Dr. Strange comics.

That said, Feige was also quick to confirm that horror or not, the movie will still be PG-13. Thankfully, as we've learned in recent years, PG-13 horror can still be pretty shocking.

Driver Found Playing Pokemon Go On Eight Phones At Once

A driver in Washington State took his Pokemon Go obsession a bit further than usual. Sgt. Kyle Smith of the Washington State Patrol discovered a driver pulled over to the side of the road playing the mobile game on eight phones at once.

Fellow trooper Rick Johnson tweeted about the incident, including a look at a blue foam board that had been cut to hold all the phones at once. Johnson clarified in later tweets that the driver was not spotted actually playing Pokemon Go while driving, and so the officer simply reminded him not to pull over to the shoulder unless an emergency requires it. Still, it's hard to imagine how the driver could have noticed any monsters worth pulling over for without at least glancing at his surprisingly complex phone array.

Pokemon Go exploded in popularity when it was first released in 2016, raising safety concerns for children playing or distracted drivers. Niantic has long since implemented a feature that disables the game if it detects you're moving too fast to be walking, but that can be overridden by telling the game you're a passenger in a car.

For those of you still playing Pokemon Go and doing it responsibly, the game has lots of ongoing events and features to take part in right now. A Suicune raid will be taking place over the weekend, and the game has outlined plans for its September Community Day. Or you can just relax and evolve some Eevees.

Everything we know about Amazon's The Wheel of Time adaptation

by Christian Holub

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has made no secret of the fact that he wants his own version of Game of Thrones, and he may have finally gotten his wish. Amazon is currently working on a TV adaptation of Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time, which has often been compared to George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire (the basis for GoT) and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (of which Amazon is also currently working on a TV adaptation).

Here’s everything we know about Amazon’s The Wheel of Time so far.

What’s it about?

The Wheel of Time is a 14-book fantasy saga published from 1990 to 2013. It was originally supposed to be 12 books, but after Jordan died in 2007, his successor Brandon Sanderson turned Jordan’s notes for the final installment into three separate volumes.

As the title suggests, The Wheel of Time is set in a world where time is cyclical. Like many fantasy novels, the technology and setting resemble medieval Europe, though there are also references to it being set in Earth’s far future (“There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time,” reads the introduction to every book in the series). Most of the story is set in the western region of an unnamed continent, where everyone is slowly realizing that the apocalypse might be coming.

The first volume, The Eye of the World, will form the basis of season 1 and follows Moiraine Damodred (a member of the powerful all-female organization known as the Aes Sedai) as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers and tries to determine which of her five young companions (Egwene Al’Vere, Perrin Aybara, Mat Cauthon, Rand Al’Thor, and Nynaeve) is the Dragon Reborn, a figure prophesied to either save or destroy humanity.

Who’s in it?

We already knew that Rosamund Pike is starring in the show as Moiraine, but now we have casting for the other main characters as well. Josha Stradowski will play Rand’Al Thor, Madeleine Madden takes on Egwene Al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford plays Perrin Aybara, Barney Harris is Mat Cauthon, and Zoë Robbins is Nynaeve.

When’s it coming out?

The Wheel of Time will stream exclusively on Amazon Video. There is currently no set release date, but at this rate, fans probably shouldn’t expect it until next year.

This article will be updated as more information becomes available.

black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Rania 'Rainbow' Barris divorcing after 20 years

by Rachel Yang

Kenya Barris, who created the ABC comedy black-ishhas filed for divorce from his wife of 20 years, Dr. Rania “Rainbow” Barris, the Associated Press reported.

Los Angeles Superior Court documents show that Kenya Barris filed the papers on Friday, the day of his 45th birthday, according to the outlet.

Barris and his wife, an anesthesiologist, married in 1999 and have six kids. He also co-created the black-ish spinoff, grown-ish; and the prequel spinoff, mixed-ishwhich follows the upbringing of Rainbow Johnson (Arica Himmel).

Dr. Barris previously filed or divorce in 2014, but the two reconciled and withdrew the request the following year.

Black-ish is loosely based on Kenya Barris’ own upbringing, and the onscreen relationship between Andre “Dre” Johnson (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow “Bow” Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) is also partly inspired by his marriage. In an interview with EW, Dr. Barris said that direct storylines from the show have come from her life, such as the season 4 episode where Bow experiences postpartum depression after the birth of her fifth child.

Dr. Barris also said that the fourth season plotline showing Bow and Dre’s marriage nearly collapsing wasn’t reflective of her marriage, but noted that it was an amalgamation of difficult moments from their past. She told Barris as the separation narrative was being discussed, “I think you owe it to your viewers to show this.”

Ahead of black-ish airing the plotline, Barris released a statement explaining why the show chose the topic for its first serialized arc. “Dre and Bow have never been immune to tough situations, just like marriages in real life, including my own,” he wrote. “We want to shine a light on the challenges a relationship can face and the necessary effort to try and work through them together.”

5 reasons we're excited for Lucy Liu's Why Women Kill

by Rachel Yang

CBS All Access’ newest offering is Why Women Kill, a dark comedy series that explores marriage, infidelity, and women’s rights through the lens of three protagonists through the ages. It stars Ginnifer Goodwin as 1960s housewife Beth Ann, Lucy Liu as socialite Simone in the ’80s, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste as a high-powered lawyer in 2018. The show and its title tease that each woman’s marriage is teeming with betrayal and lies that could trigger deadly consequences.

The series should attract fans of the women-behaving-badly genre, as it comes from Desperate Housewives and Devious Maids creator Marc Cherry. But if that’s not reason enough for you to tune in, here are five more reasons Why Women Kill may be your newest addiction.

A killer lineup

The series boasts a deadly roster — how could you go wrong when one of your stars is a certifiable badass who’s graced the screens of Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels? Besides the formidable team of Liu and Goodwin, the show’s true weapon is breakout star Howell-Baptiste, already a fan favorite from her scene-stealing appearances on shows like The Good Place and Killing Eve. Howell-Baptiste gets — and nails — the best lines on the show. When she stares down a patronizing contractor and tells him “My dick is bigger than yours,” viewers should be simultaneously terrified and admiring of her grit.

Anything men can do, women can do better

From Happy to Barry, leading men in comedies have been dominating the killing game. But why can’t women get in on the fun? Why Women Kill is riding the wave that titles like Good Girls and Dead to Me have set in motion for the late 2010s, putting women front and center of all the action. All these heroines have depth as well. They’re not separated into antiquated categories like “the wife” or “the bad girl”; they get to be whatever they so choose, with or without a man.

Society through the ages

One of the most fascinating elements of Why Women Kill is the depiction of how social issues have progressed (or not) through generations. While the three women’s stories take place in different eras, the show smartly finds ways to weave their narratives together. In the first episode, Beth Ann’s chauvinist husband (Sam Jaeger) condescendingly taps his mug to indicate his wife should immediately jump to refill his coffee.

Skip to the present: Eli (Reid Scott), who met Taylor at the Women’s March and outwardly celebrates her independence, is threatened by his wife’s status as the sole breadwinner and becomes infatuated with a woman who’s at his every beck and call (like pouring him coffee). While many of us think our society has shed some of its backwards ways, the show tells us that things haven’t changed as much as we’d like and perhaps modern men have more growing to do than they think.

It’s not all black and white

The show hints at betrayal, but it seems with each progressing story, the details become less clear-cut. Rob the Knob (as we like to call him) has no excuses. Yet Karl, Simone’s husband, elicits some sympathy as a closeted man who likely feared the consequences of coming out. And for Eli and Taylor, their polyamorous relationship brings up many complex issues that test their mutual trust and boundaries. It’s a lot of complicated, human drama that we can’t wait to see unfold.

The fashion of it all

The best part of the show exploring different time periods is seeing the fashions of each era. From Beth Ann and Rob’s prim and proper decor to Simone and Karl’s delightfully gaudy mansion to Taylor and Eli’s sleek digs, it’s amazing to take in. Simone, in particular, brings it — the big earrings, the bright fabrics visible from a mile away, the shoulder pads! Even if you prefer Taylor’s more toned-down leather jackets, you can’t deny that the ’80s were a time to behold in fashion.

If you haven’t caught Why Women Kill trailer yet ahead of the show’s Aug. 15 debut, watch it above.

Rob Thomas breaks down iZombie's happy ending — and why it's so different from Veronica Mars

by Sydney Bucksbaum

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the iZombie series finale, “All’s Well That Ends Well.”

Turns out that the zombie apocalypse actually ends happily ever after. Who would have thought?

After five seasons of building toward an all-out war between humans and zombies, iZombie signed off with a series finale that saw every main character not only survive, but also get the perfect future they deserved. Major (Robert Buckley) took what he thought was the zombie cure on live TV, intending to die for the cause, but after an intense showdown it was revealed to actually be a fake dose, as Ravi (Rahul Kohli) swapped it out to inject the head zombie of the antihuman movement instead, proving the zombie cure’s effectiveness to the world. A flash-forward epilogue set 10 years in the future then explained how that act ended the human-zombie war, as well as where everyone ended up.

In a “virtualcast” (think podcast but with futuristic virtual reality), America the Virtual host Byron Deceasey (played by Chris Lowell in a surprise cameo) brought together Ravi, Peyton (Aly Michalka), and Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) for an episode on the 10th anniversary of the Battle for Seattle, which ended the war. Ten years in the future, Clive and Dale (Jessica Harmon) were still happily married, and co-captains of the San Francisco PD. Peyton and Ravi were still together, with Peyton working as a DA in Atlanta and Ravi serving as the head of the CDC (despite making a good chunk of change from book deals and speaking appearances after becoming famous for discovering the cure for zombies). But Liv (Rose McIver) and Major were conspicuously absent from the episode.

As Byron recapped the aftermath of Major taking the “cure” on live television (with the public still unaware he was given a fake dose), we learned that his big heroic act had the desired effect. Zombies were no longer considered an apocalyptic threat with the cure being mass-produced, and that meant brain donations resumed. The sick and dying flocked to Seattle to be turned into zombies, and the city was rebuilt and rebranded as a peaceful place where zombies and humans lived side by side.

But here’s where the virtualcast took a turn for the extremely heartbreaking: Byron revealed that Liv was allegedly killed by an anti-zombie suicide bomber… unless you believed the rumor she survived (being Renegade earned her legendary outlaw status even in death). Clive, Ravi and Peyton all confirmed that they believed she died in the explosion, but Major didn’t. According to the trio, he had continued to dig in the wreckage of the morgue along with the group of orphans he took in. But since some anti-zombie human Dead Enders still existed along with their leader, Dolly Durkins (Jennifer Irwin), they were still hunting him down as one of the most well-known faces of Fillmore Graves. He was forced to go into hiding, and hadn’t been seen in a decade.

iZombie could have ended on that ambiguous note, with fans left to wonder forever whether Liv really died and what happened to Major. But thankfully, creator and showrunner Rob Thomas did us a solid and gave a definitive answer in the final minutes. A flashback scene showed that not only did Liv survive, she also reunited (physically and romantically!) with Major. They were living happily together (and married, based on that ring on Liv’s finger) as zombies with their little family of adopted orphans on Zombie Island (the dream became a reality!). And after Byron signed off the virtualcast, Liv and Major signed on to reunite with the whole gang, revealing that the friend group does this every so often to catch up — with Major telling the same dad jokes every single time (because, of course). But since they’re all living in separate places, they all miss each other, which prompts Liv and Major to extend an offer to the gang to come live with them forever on Zombie Island… and they all actually seem to consider it. Fade to black!

Riding that high of pure pop culture happiness, EW spoke with Thomas to break down the ending, why this was the plan from the very beginning of the series, why iZombie’s finale is oh so incredibly opposite from Thomas’ controversial Veronica Mars shocker, and more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Last time we talked, you were more hands-on with Hulu’s Veronica Mars revival than with iZombie’s final season, so when did you come back to iZombie?
ROB THOMAS: I was in the room breaking the first seven episodes , and I was in there for the writing and shooting of the first five. And then Diane and I came back on the last two, episodes 12 and 13.

Did you always know you were going to end on this flash-forward epilogue?
That only occurred to me when we started breaking that episode. Even though what played out was all stuff that we had on the board for a long time, the idea of a flash-forward virtualcast, that didn’t come to me until really the week I started breaking the episode.

How has the series ending changed over the course of the five seasons? Is it still the same idea from when you first created the show?
The broad strokes remain the same. I think you could have asked me five years ago how will the show end and I would have said that our crew will be victorious in some way, and Major and Liv will find their way back to each other. I’ve always known that, hey, I’m not doing a noir show for once! Let’s give them the happy ending! That much has always been in my head. I had no idea that Ravi and Peyton would end up together. That is just a product of those two are fun on screen together, they work well together, people like them together. That was a new idea. I probably would have told you that Blaine would have died in the finale, but I was happier with where we ended up. I like him living forever at the bottom of a well with Don E. , who hates him, down there with him. That only occurred to us about midway through the final season, how we would end with those two.

That definitely felt like poetic justice.
Yeah. It was a way for both Liv and Don E. to give Blaine his comeuppance. Both of them got a piece of it. Don E. shoves him down the well and then Liv shoves Don E. down the well with him. That felt good to us.

Confession: I was shocked by how badly I felt for Don E. getting stuck down there with him forever, because he’s just as evil as Blaine, if not worse, and definitely deserved it. But his story in the final season finding the love of his life, I weirdly felt bad for him to end up here!
I get it too! He’s got a lot of charm to him. He does seem like a more decent guy than Blaine. Certainly Don E. has done some things worthy of eternity in a well, so don’t lose much sleep for him.

The end of the flash-forward feels a little ambiguous, with Liv and Major offering Ravi, Peyton, and Clive a literal forever home Zombie Island. In your mind, are the three humans actually considering reuniting for good by moving there?
I have my own idea in my head about whether the friends said, “You know what? We’ll live on a deserted island with your zombie family!” I have a definite view, but I don’t know that I want to give my answer to it. I kind of like the audience getting to put them wherever they want in their own minds. And that’s the end of that.

What was your ultimate goal with ending the series on such a happy note for all the characters? I’m still shocked none of them died.
I felt like if all of America was watching iZombie, our nation would be healed by now. Unfortunately, doing our share, that didn’t happen. But that was really what I was going for: the lessening of eternal strife in America. I don’t think we accomplished it, sadly.

Maybe you did on a smaller scale?
The whole theme of iZombie was, can the middle hold? In Seattle, in zombie-controlled Seattle, the middle held. It did not give in to the extremes on either side. The middle held. That’s what I wanted to demonstrate.

I’m so happy that Liv and Major end up together, because we’ve been waiting for this, maybe not so patiently, for so many seasons. And is this just me trying to will something into existence, or was that a wedding ring on Liv and Major’s fingers?
It was! It was. They’re married. You’re welcome!

The human-vs.-zombie war may have ended, but there are still so many lingering story lines even 10 years later, like the Dead Enders still hunting down well-known zombies, Seattle become a rebranded zombie city, the creation and sustainment of Zombie Island, and more. Would you ever consider doing a spin-off or revisiting this story at some point in the future?
I don’t think it’s going to happen for iZombie. Though if in the future there is a call for more iZombie, I love this group of actors so much, I would be game to work with them any time, anywhere. Obviously if we never do another iZombie I predict that you will see these actors in future projects of mine. I just adore them all.

This is a big few weeks for you, since you also just debuted another high-profile finale with Veronica Mars season 4, which decidedly did not end on a happy note. Obviously that one saw an extremely passionate response from fans, so has that made you worry about how this one will be received?
I’m probably happy that I provided a happier ending in iZombie. I think this one is more apt to make fans excited than Veronica Mars. But with Veronica Mars, because I imagined that show was going to go on and we were going to continue to do more mysteries, I wasn’t building that as the grand ending of the series, whereas I was on iZombie. The closest I had ever thought I was writing the end of the entire Veronica Mars universe was when I wrote the movie. In the end of the movie, I did give the audience a reasonably happy ending with Veronica back working as a private detective and she and Logan back together. It’s only now that I’m starting to believe I’m going to get the opportunity to do a bunch more that that happy ending didn’t work for me moving forward.

If Veronica Mars is the shot, then iZombie is definitely the chaser.
I may steal that… I really can’t go online these days. I will find out the reaction secondhand through Google alerts the next day. Hopefully it’s more positive.

Was there anything you wanted to include in the final season or series as a whole that didn’t end up fitting?
We finally did get some stuff about her family into this final season. I would have liked to have put more meat on those bones. It’s just we had so many characters to give their own story lines that it just became unwieldy. We had a hard time fitting in all that story we had for the series regulars that adding story lines for family members — they were written several times and in a few places shot, and they just kept getting pushed further down the road. I do regret that.

At least we finally got it in the final season. That was great payoff.
We had intended to have them in the finale as well, but we ran out of room. There just wasn’t room for them. At least we know that they’re well and Liv has, to some degree, patched up that relationship. That felt good.

What would we have seen with them in the finale?
You would have gotten a bigger dose of the rapprochement. It had to go so quickly in episode 12 that I just think you would have gotten to play a couple more pages on screen of them working through their history. But episode 12 was such a roller coaster ride, it was so quick-moving that there wasn’t a lot of time for heartfelt scenes. I know that the plan would have been for them to be on that plane back to Portland with them, but we just couldn’t make it happen.

What are you most proud of from this series now that it’s over?
It was a fun place to go to work for five years. It was really the happiest place on Earth. As a television writer, there are so many things that can make your life miserable — a bad relationship with a studio, a bad relationship with a network, a cast that doesn’t like each other or makes your life difficult, a crew that isn’t good, all sorts of things that can make doing television a grind — and we had none of that. It was five years of people going to work happy. In terms of storytelling, I’m fine with where we got on iZombie. I’m not even sure if they told me, “You could have a sixth and seventh season,” I’m not sure what I would have even done with them. I didn’t mind ending the story here. The thing that I will get misty over is not coming to work with this team, from top to bottom. It was a really great ride.

The Good Place creator on how — and why — the show changed its ultimate message

by Dan Snierson

NBC’s afterlife adventure The Good Place has become one of TV’s most challenging and delightful comedies, exploring questions of ethics, morality, and lower-circle-of-hell torture techniques over the last three seasons. But the expectation-subverting show that loves to shift paradigms has pivoted in another significant way. Speaking to reporters during The Good Place panel at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, creator Mike Schur explained how the intention of the series wound up evolving over time, and he seemingly hinted at a component of what will be the show’s ultimate message entering this fourth and final season.

The series began with ethics/moral philosophy professor Chidi (William Jackson Harper) attempting to teach Eleanor (Kristen Bell) what it means to be a good person. Later, the entire group (which also includes Jameela Jamil’s Tahani, Manny Jacinto’s Jason, and D’Arcy Carden’s Janet) sought to help demon architect Michael (Ted Danson) find his humanity. Most recently, the Soul Squad prepared to prove Michael’s humans-can-evolve theory with a fate-deciding experiment. And somewhere along the way, as the points system went to, well, hell, the show’s writers discovered a deeper truth than the one they initially thought they were seeking. And it involved a simple word: Try.

“I pitched the show as an investigation of what it meant to be a good person, and found over the course of working on it with the writers and the actors and the entire crew that that’s even a more complicated question than I think I thought it was,” Schur explained. “I thought at the beginning that the show could, if given the chance, describe what it meant to be a good person. That was my hope. And that didn’t mean ‘Do this and not that.’ It meant ‘Here’s what a good person looked like in the world. Here’s how a person can feel like he or she led a good life.’ At the end of the day, that objective kind of shifted a little bit. Because what we found as we discussed it and wrote it and executed it is that some very, very smart people over the last, say, 3,000 years have had a lot of very different opinions about that question.”

He continued, “So what the mission of the show then became was to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to give you a bunch of options. You can be a good person this way or you can try to be a good person this way.’ And what we ended up saying is ‘We’re going to present a bunch of options, and by the way, there are plenty more we didn’t describe, but what’s important is that you try one of them.’ That was my internal shift over the course of making the show: the newfound belief that the important thing wasn’t actually — and it’s counterintuitive to say this — being good. The important thing was that you’re trying.”

Schur indicated that said effort seemed to be in short supply among us in these complicated, fractured times. “It feels like a huge part of the problem, from my point of view, is that not enough people are just trying,” he said. “And trying means failing. Everybody fails all the time; even people with the best of intentions will fail. It doesn’t matter whether you follow this theory or that theory, or this belief or whatever. You’re going to fail a lot. We all fail all the time at this. So… at the beginning I pitched what it means to be a good person. And at the end I would describe this as a show that makes the argument that we all ought to try harder than we are. And as long as you’re trying, you’re on the right path.”

The path to the final episode of The Good Place begins Sept. 26, with the unveiling of the season 4 premiere. And Danson — who, like Bell, welled up with tears at the TCA panel — expressed his admiration for and satisfaction with the conclusion of this heady journey. “I’m grateful that it ended with as much integrity as it started with,” he summed up.

Skype, Slack, other Electron-based apps can be easily backdoored

LAS VEGAS—The Electron development platform is a key part of many applications, thanks to its cross-platform capabilities. Based on JavaScript and Node.js, Electron has been used to create client applications for Internet communications tools (including Skype, WhatsApp, and Slack) and even Microsoft's Visual Studio Code development tool. But Electron can also pose a significant security risk because of how easily Electron-based applications can be modified without triggering warnings.

At the BSides LV security conference on Tuesday, Pavel Tsakalidis demonstrated a tool he created called BEEMKA, a Python-based tool that allows someone to unpack Electron ASAR archive files and inject new code into Electron's JavaScript libraries and built-in Chrome browser extensions. The vulnerability is not part of the applications themselves but of the underlying Electron framework—and that vulnerability allows malicious activities to be hidden within processes that appear to be benign. Tsakalidis said that he had contacted Electron about the vulnerability but that he had gotten no response—and the vulnerability remains.

While making these changes required administrator access on Linux and MacOS, it only requires local access on Windows. Those modifications can create new event-based "features" that can access the file system, activate a Web cam, and exfiltrate information from systems using the functionality of trusted applications—including user credentials and sensitive data. In his demonstration, Tsakalidis showed a backdoored version of Microsoft Visual Studio Code that sent the contents of every code tab opened to a remote website.

Gamers are Using a Meme to Show the Softer, Nicer Side of Video Games

by Colin Stevens

Video games came under attack following the tragic mass shooting incidents in Gilroy, Dayton, and El Paso. Since blaming video games for gun violence doesn't make sense, gamers across the internet have been using a meme template to show just how harmless and cute gaming can truly be.

The "Woman Yelling at a Cat" meme combines an image of Taylor Armstrong from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills pointing and yelling with a picture of a harmless cat sitting behind a dinner plate, because internet humor has become a bizarre mix of deep cut pop culture references and... cats.
