There are so many gorgeous photos in Jared Chambers’ portfolio, that it is difficult to choose a small number to share with you. His pictures are sharp and captivating that it will feel like you are present in each location. He is definitely a photographer to keep an eye on, and it would be great to see him work with a director on a movie.

Black-and-White Photos of a Tiny Batman’s Adventures in Texas by Rémi Noël

by Justin Page

Batman by Rémi Noël

French photographer Rémi Noël captured a great series of black-and-white photos that follows a tiny Batman’s adventures in Texas. Rémi took the photos for his small Poetry Wanted publishing house and created “the least precise map of Texas in the history of Texas” for their collection This Is Not A Map. The Texas map is filled with photos that Rémi snapped during his journey with the help of a miniature Dark Knight action figure. You can also check out Poetry Wanted’s maps of Las Vegas, Scotland, and Japan.

Nearly 20 miles of colorful ribbons are suspended from the ceiling of San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral as part of the ongoing installation “Graced With Light” by Anne Patterson. The installation was unveiled in spring 2013 and over the past months has been the backdrop for a series of performances, video projections, and other collaborations. “Graced With Light” was originally intended to end in fall 2013, but due to its popularity, has been extended to February 28, 2014. For more on the installation see this San Francisco Chronicle article.

360°Books Open to Reveal 360 Degrees of Cut Paper Illustrations

by EDW Lynch

360 Degree Books by Yusuke Oono

Japanese artist and architect Yusuke Oono has created a series of books that recount famous tales like Snow White and The Jungle Book in cut paper illustrations. When fully opened, each “360°Book” forms a circular fan of pages in which every page is visible. Oono designs each book digitally and cuts the pages with a laser cutter.

Nihalani’s Urban Illusions

by Adriana de Barros
3d rectangle through man's body by Aakash Nihalani

Growing up fascinated with magic, it is no wonder that New York based artist Aakash Nihalani has made a name for himself creating illusional tape art. His work of cubes, rectangular cuboids and other geometric shapes have animated the streets of Brooklyn, Vienna and New Delhi. Nihalani’s outdoor art has one specific advantage: “working with tape, my work differs from other street art in that it revels in the temporary. I like the flexibility of it, and that it’s not damaging to the built environment I’m working on.” [1]

The President Takes a Selfie, and Michelle Obama is Having None of it

The President Takes a Selfie, and Michelle Obama is Having None of it

Maybe it's just the timing of these photos and the power of photography, or maybe Michelle Obama is just really really not going to put up with the POTUS's behavior at the Nelson Mandela memorial service. Speaking of which, there's a narrative you can probably craft based on these photos here:
Oh heck no

Likely that narrative is "Barack Obama got up to pee and Michelle stole his spot" but the alternative is just a bit more entertaining.

Life-Size Fabric Model of a House Within a House by Do Ho Suh

by EDW Lynch

Home Within Home by Do Ho Suh

Korean artist Do Ho Suh has created a life-size fabric replica of a three-story American house, inside of which is a replica of a traditional Korean home, for his large scale installation “Home Within Home Within Home Within Home Within Home.” Each replica represents a home Suh has lived in—the 39-foot-tall American house was Suh’s first residence in the United States (in Providence, Rhode Island), and the smaller structure is his family’s house in Seoul. The installation is on display at the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea through May 11, 2014. For more of Suh’s work, see our previous posts.

Creative Photos of Figurines Going About Their Miniature Lives in Our Big World

by DL Cade

petitmonde1

In English, the title of husband and wife photographer team Kurt and Edwige Moses‘ photo series Un Petit Monde translates into “A Small World,” but there’s nothing small about the world the duo have created for the series, only its inhabitants.

The series began all the way back in 2010 “as a way to relax and explore a more creative side of my photography,” explains Kurt. “It has grown into a passion of ours and we now focus 75% of our time creating, processing, planning and building a library of fine art photographs.”

Kurt and Edwige travel all over the United States in their vintage RV (you can read about that here) setting up miniature scenes that depict everything from the daily grind of a 9-5 lifestyle, to adventures like skiing or battling a giant squid, to more relaxing endeavors like gardening — although gardening takes on a whole new meaning when the flowers are bigger than you are.

It’s a playful series that is meant to make you smile and, perhaps, inspire a bit of wanderlust at times:

“Un Petit Monde combines the challenges of capturing an evocative, aesthetically pleasing image while documenting a scene in the real world environment using only available light and existing conditions,” writes Kurt on the project’s About page. “Ultimately, it is our mission to share some of the fun and joy for life with you through our project.”

To see the rest of the series (and there is A LOT more) or learn more about the husband and wife behind it, head over to the Un Petit Monde website or follow their adventures on their Life in a Travco blog.

Stunning! Rare Atmospheric Phenomenon Fills the Entire Grand Canyon with Fog

by DL Cade

inversion3

Stunning, breathtaking, Oh Em Gee, however you want to put it, the photos in this post are incredible to look at and incredibly difficult to capture. Not because it takes any crazy skills to properly photograph the Grand Canyon, but because the atmospheric conditions necessary to make these photos possible happens only about once per decade!

As you might have already noticed, the clouds in these photos decided to take a breather and settle into the Grand Canyon instead of floating above it. This phenomenon happens when something called a temperature inversion pushes fog down into the Grand Canyon and keeps it there.

Smaller versions of this happen about once or twice per year, Park Ranger Erin Whittaker told The Daily Mail, but a full inversion like the one that happen this last Friday takes place only about once every ten years. As you can see, it’s quite a sight to behold:

inversion4

Ironically, Ranger Whittaker said that some of the tourists thought this was a typical occurrence and were disappointed that the pesky fog was obscuring their view of the Colorado River, an annoyance Whittaker and her colleagues quickly alleviated when they explained how rare the vista they were being treated to really is.

And once word got around that a gorgeous full inversion like this was happening under clear blue skies (yet another rarity), Whittaker said that “Word spread like wildfire” as locals streamed into the park to photograph the phenomenon. Whittaker called it “a treat for all.”

To find out more or see more pictures of this “Ocean of Clouds” shared by the National Park, head over to their Facebook page and feast your eyes.

Lucid Stead, Artist Uses Mirrors to Make a Desert Cabin Blend in to the Surroundings

by EDW Lynch

Lucid Stead by Phillip K Smith

In his outdoor installation “Lucid Stead,” artist Phillip K Smith III used mirrored panels to make a 70-year-old cabin in California’s Mojave Desert blend in to the beautiful surroundings. The mirrored panels partially cover the building’s exterior walls, as well as the windows and doorway. At night, LEDs cause the building to glow in slowly shifting colors. The installation opened in Joshua Tree, California in October 2013.
