The frozen remains of a mammoth have been discovered on an island north of Siberia—with blood that is still liquid.

The 10,000-year-old beast was found on one of the Lyakhovsky Islands in the Novosibirsk archipelago off the northern coast of Siberia. Researchers from the Northeastern Federal University in Yakutsk poked the remains with an ice pick and, incredibly, blood flowed out.

"The fragments of muscle tissues, which we've found out of the body, have a natural red color of fresh meat," said Semyon Grigoriev, chairman of the university's Museum of Mammoths and head of the expedition. "The reason for such preservation is that the lower part of the body was underlying (sic) in pure ice, and the upper part was found in the middle of tundra. We found a trunk separately from the body, which is the worst-preserved part."

Seattle's 5 Point Cafe, whose webpage boasts of "alcoholics serving alcoholics since 1929," has issued a zero-tolerance ban for Google Glass. The announcement was made via Facebook last week and read, "For the record, The 5 Point is the first Seattle business to ban in advance Google Glasses. And ass kickings will be encouraged for violators."

An undoubted PR stunt, the ban was greeted positively by many of the early respondents to the post. Of course, few of them have any clue what Google Glass is or does, but the common (somewhat mistaken) view is that the Glass Project is all about strapping secretive camcorders to our heads. That way, we can post embarrassing pictures of drunks on Facebook! (You know, like we already can do with the ubiquitous smartphone camera.) In an interview with MYNorthwest.com, 5 Point owner Dave Meinert references this: "Part of this is a joke, to be funny on Facebook and get a reaction, but part of it is serious because we don't let people film other people or take photos unwanted of other people in the bar because it's kind of a private place people go." But Meinert doesn't ban smartphones outright, which again, can also record video.

Lost in the discussion of how Google Glass may erode privacy is the simple fact that the glasses have a bright red indicator that lights up when recording video. This is more than can be said for most smartphones, which have no such indicators (by and large). The question is less "what will happen when people are secretly video recorded," and more "what will happen when people notice someone is recording them." As GeekWire noted in their coverage of this ban, this can lead to some hostile interactions.

A week or so ago, we gave my five year old son a little solar powered pocket calculator to play with. He explored the key pad and it didn’t take long before he had a question we didn’t really know how to answer. He saw the square root symbol and wanted to know what it was.

We — adults, generally — understand them, at least in a cursory way. The square root of 4 is 2, or 9 is 3, of 16 is 4, etc. until probably 100 or 144. But we learned it a long time ago, and we probably can’t remember how we learned it. And almost certainly, we learned the concept well after preschool. So not only do we not know how to teach the concept generally, but we certainly aren’t good at teaching it to people who are much, much younger than typically learn it.

But five year olds can be persistent so I gave it a go. I don’t know how much he understands the concept, but my son definitely gets some of it.

I started off by drawing a row of five “blocks,” careful not to call them squares. Then we counted them together. (Being very deliberate in each step seemed to help a lot.)

After that, I drew a row of five more blocks (well, four more, double-counting the corner) across.

And then, we counted and labeled the sides.

I then took a bit of a leap, and explained that these two sets of five blocks were the “roots” of a square, kind of like how a tree has roots. And a really big square can grow from the “roots.” We just needed to fill in the rest of the square with more boxes. So we did.

We then counted the boxes and, of course, ended up with 25.  Our 25-box square had a root of 5. And to demonstrate we were right, I asked him to put the number 25 into his calculator and hit the square root button. When the five popped up, he screamed “WE’RE RIGHT! IT’S FIVE!”

I repeated this whole thing for 4, 3, 2, and then 1. And then I asked him to explain it back. He was so excited he ended up telling his preschool teachers about what he “learned”… and hopefully, understood.

Se escolher construir uma aplicação com Web teremos como vantagens e desvatagens:

• A aplicação que pode rodar em múltiplas plataformas.
• Atualização rápida e abrangente. Não é necessário passar por Apple/Play Store ou ter que esperar o usuário baixar uma versão nova.
• Por atender várias plataformas mobiles diferentes, a UX do aplicativo não terá o tom característico do dispositivo.

Já uma aplicação nativa:

• Necessita de tempo para desenvolver código diferente para cada plataforma.
• UX mais específica
• SDK pode facilitar o desenvolvimento e teste dos aplicativos.
• A atualização do aplicativo depende de Apple/Play Store e do usuário.

Essa resposta depende da definição do aplicativo. Olhando para os pontos positivios e negativos conseguimos ter uma idéia do melhor caminho a seguir.

No QConSP de 2012, Martin Fowler   abordou esse tema em sua palestra, chegando a discutir a criação de aplicações híbridas que usam a linguagem nativa com HTML 5. Aliás, esse era o caso do Facebook, onde uma casca em iOS envelopava uma aplicação HTML5.

Yes — if you don’t know much math, that is. A new study finds that even academic scholars perceived research to be of higher quality if there’s some math involved — even if the math makes no sense. The experiment threw an irrelevant mathematical equation into research paper abstracts, and asked scholars of different fields to evaluate the quality of the research:

Mathematics is a fundamental tool of research. Although potentially applicable in every discipline, the amount of training in mathematics that students typically receive varies greatly between different disciplines. In those disciplines where most researchers do not master mathematics, the use of mathematics may be held in too much awe. To demonstrate this I conducted an online experiment with 200 participants, all of which had experience of reading research reports and a postgraduate degree (in any subject). Participants were presented with the abstracts from two published papers (one in evolutionary anthropology and one in sociology). Based on these abstracts, participants were asked to judge the quality of the research. Either one or the other of the two abstracts was manipulated through the inclusion of an extra sentence taken from a completely unrelated paper and presenting an equation that made no sense in the context. The abstract that included the meaningless mathematics tended to be judged of higher quality. However, this “nonsense math effect” was not found among participants with degrees in mathematics, science, technology or medicine.

A OFCS (Online Film Critics Society), organização de críticos de cinema que atuam na internet, divulgou os vencedores do OFCS Awards, premiando os melhores de 2012. A associação tem o crítico Pablo Villaça como um dos membros.

O grande vencedor foi Argo, dirigido e protagonizado por Ben Aflleck, que além do prêmio de Melhor Filme também levou Melhor Roteiro Adaptado.

O Mestre também faturou dois prêmios: Melhor Diretor, para Paul Thomas Anderson, e Melhor Ator Coadjuvante, para Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
