Japanese construction company Taisei Corporation has developed...

Japanese construction company Taisei Corporation has developed a form of building demolition that’s far more quiet, healthy and environmentally-friendly than traditional methods. And it doesn’t even involve wrecking balls or explosives.

The process is called “Ecological Reproduction System"

Using a crane, material from the interior of the building is removed. That includes beams, concrete, paneling, etc. In this way the process is kind of like a reverse assembly line, taking apart the structure bit by bit.

Basically, the building disappears floor-by-floor. And as the material is taken out, the company makes sure that anything reusable is recycled and re-purposed

ultrafacts:

A new generation of online games don’t just provide entertainment – they help scientists solve puzzles involving genes, conservation and the universe.

A year later, people playing an astronomy game called Planet Hunters found a curious planet with four stars in its system, and to date, they’ve discovered 40 planets that could potentially support life, all of which had been previously missed by professional astronomers.

While we’ve tended to define berries as any small edible fruit, the official definition of a berry is “a fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary.”  By this definition, oranges, kumquats, and even tomatoes can also be considered part of the berry family.

ultrafacts:

Raffia the 10-year-old camel has become the very first animal to help with Google’s mapping missions, using one of the company’s Trekker cameras to capture the landscape of the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Raffia and her guide took to the sand as early as 6am in the morning to ensure the best lighting conditions. The resulting film and still photographs show the desert’s rolling sand dunes, an oasis, fellow camels, scuttling sand and some gangly camera-and-camel shadows.

ultrafacts:

“The Trojan room coffee pot was the inspiration for the world’s first webcam. The coffee pot was located in the Trojan Room, within the old Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge. The webcam was created to help people working in other parts of the building avoid pointless trips to the coffee room by providing a live picture of the state of the coffee pot. The camera was installed on a local network in 1991 using a video capture card on an Acorn Archimedes. Quentin Stafford-Fraser wrote the client software and Paul Jardetzky wrote the server.

ultrafacts:

In 1995, St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee received an anonymous letter postmarked Dallas, Texas, containing a $1 million winning game piece.

Although game rules prohibited the transfer of prizes, McDonald’s waived the rule and made its last $50,000 annual payment in 2014.

Investigations later indicated that Jerome P. Jacobson had admitted to sending the winning piece to the hospital.

St. Jude said it would do whatever McDonald’s wanted. In a statement McDonald’s spokesman said the restaurant chain had no intention of asking for its money back.  [x]

MakerBot's iPad App Can Now Turn Your Drawings Into 3D-Printable Models

by Andrew Liszewski

One of the biggest reasons there isn’t a 3D printer in every home—yet—has nothing to do with price or availability. It’s the fact that if you want to design and print your own objects, you need to know how to use relatively complex 3D modelling software. So MakerBot has updated its free PrintShop iPad app to include a new feature that can photograph and easily convert your hand-drawn sketches into 3D models.

Video: How processed deli meat is made

by Casey Chan on Sploid, shared by Casey Chan to Gizmodo
Prettocraig

well never eating deli meat again....

Though it might look like some sort of condom testing or water balloon making, what you’re actually looking at is bologna being made. The natural casing gets fitted over a stuffing horn and filled with a meat mixture of beef, pork and seasoning. It’s then smacked with a spike and smoked until it comes out looking veiny and alive. Pretty cool (gross), right!

The most amazing Hubble Space Telescope fly-through yet defies belief

If space traveling the universe had a scenic route, this would be it. It’s a 3D fly-through of the nebula Gum 29 with the stunning star cluster Westerlund 2 in the middle and it’s absolutely gorgeous. The image was taken by the Hubble and shown off for its 25th anniversary. It’s the stuff of dreams.

well done Betty

In February 1960, James made an unexpected and dramatic exit.

With little explanation, he bought a one-way ticket to rural Bolivia, and joined a cult somewhere deep in the wilderness. By July, he’d severed all ties and disappeared.

Just before leaving, he’d presented Betty with a choice: she could liquidate the company, or assume sole ownership. She chose the latter.

‘Rapey’ Bud Light ad offends nearly everyone

by Jill Slattery

this is really unbelievable...I am not in marketing/advertising, but I imagine at least 100 people had to approve this before it gets stamped on a bottle. Linds - Any comments?

Sometimes we wonder how ads like this get through dozens of people without being red flagged, but Budweiser staff clearly did not notice that they were promoting rape culture with their latest tagline. Budweiser first made waves with their #UpforWhatever campaign that kicked off around St. Patrick’s Day, sparking outrage that the company was propagating […]

Photographer Brittany Wright Captures Foods in Colorful Gradients

by Kate Sierzputowski

All images © Brittany Wright

Photographer and food enthusiast Brittany Wright sets up intricate culinary still lifes that focus primarily on the differentiation of fruits’ and vegetables’ coloration. Wright captures a rainbow of colors in foods ranging from heaps of apples to carrots plucked freshly from the earth. Each photograph focuses on the produce against a stark white background, a way to display the food’s vibrant shades without distraction.

The Seattle-based photographer is fascinated by capturing the aging process of vegetable and fruits, displaying the variety of forms each piece takes during ripening and decay. Wright even includes fruit harvested from her own backyard, photographing raspberries both plump and shriveled.

Wright’s client list is diverse, including brands Dry Soda and Samsung as well as (appropriately) several farms. You can see more colorful gradients and food-based imagery on Wright’s Instagram. (via Junk Culture)

Barbara Bush’s response:

Dear Marge,

How kind of you to write. I’m glad you spoke your mind; I foolishly didn’t know you had one.

I am looking at a picture of you, depicted on a plastic cup, with your blue hair filled with pink birds peeking out all over. Evidently, you and your charming family — Lisa, Homer, Bart and Maggie — are camping out. It is a nice family scene. Clearly you are setting a good example for the rest of the country.

Please forgive a loose tongue.

Warmly,

Barbara Bush

P.S. Homer looks like a handsome fella!

Fragmenta by Micaela Lattanzio

creepy...but I like them

Fragmenta by Micaela Lattanzio

Micaela Lattanzio is exploring the fragmentation of identity through her newest work, Fragmenta. Both a photographer and an artist, Micaela takes portraits of subjects and then systematically cuts and rips them up into abstract shapes.

1 Fragmenta Micaela lattanzio

She then painstakingly pins the fragments together onto a new canvas, recreating the original piece, but fragmented. Or, the Italian photographer will weave together different photos to create a completely new image.

8 Fragmenta Micaela lattanzio

By both destroying and reconnecting the fragments, Micaela explores the intricate paths of consciousness, where the reality of oneself is actually a tangle of unique perspectives.
