A Man Sent A Shocking Letter To The Cop Who Arrested Him For Drunk Driving

by Alicia Melville-Smith

In July, an intoxicated driver was pulled over and arrested on Highway 74 in Georgia by Tyrone police officer Jacob Collins.

Fox 5 Atlanta / Via fox5atlanta.com

The man, who has not been named, went to court, was fined, and was put on probation for DUI.

But it was what happened next that shocked officers at the small-town police department.

facebook.com

The man wrote a letter to the department thanking Officer Collins for arresting him and saving his life and the lives of others.

"I do not like being on probation, and I do not enjoy paying a series of fines, fees and insurance hikes; however, I am grateful to be alive. I thank Officer Collins and your entire department," he wrote.

Tyrone Police Chief Brandon Perkins was so surprised by the letter he chose to share it on the police department's Facebook page. The story was then reported by local news channel Fox 5 Atlanta.

Fox 5 Atlanta / Via fox5atlanta.com

Here's the full text of the letter sent to Chief Perkins.

I write to express my thanks and gratitude to Officer Jacob Collins.

Officer Collins pulled me over on Highway 74 during the morning of July 31, 2015. I was severely intoxicated. He saved my life and the lives of others, and I truly appreciate his actions and his efforts. I must emphasize that he was very polite and professional and did not provoke with intimidation. He treated me fairly, and I never felt ridiculed or threatened.

I have nothing to gain from contacting you. I have already been to court and received my punishments. I contact you because the media and public opinion are saturated with images of officers using excessive force. Officers are constantly on the defensive. The public does not want to acknowledge proper procedures; the public merely wants to see an officer make a mistake to keep the argument and the social media images flowing. You all need to know that what you do every day matters, and we appreciate it.

I do not like being on probation, and I do not enjoy paying a series of fines, fees and insurance hikes; however I am grateful to be alive. I thank Officer Collins and your entire department.

Chief Perkins told BuzzFeed News he and his officers were very taken aback when the letter arrived.

Tyrone Police Chief Brandon Perkins is interviewed about the letter

Fox 5 Atlanta / Via fox5atlanta.com

He said he shared the letter to show people the relationship between police and the public did not have to be an adversarial one.

"I've received thank you letters for changing a tire or solving a crime but I've never got a letter thanking one of my officers for arresting someone," Chief Perkins told BuzzFeed News.

"There's a lot of news about the adversarial relationship between police and the public so I wanted to share this letter to show the good work our officers do. There are a lot more positive things happening in the police force than get reported.

Fox 5 Atlanta / Via fox5atlanta.com

"[Officer Collins] was very taken aback when the letter arrived, but he thought it was very positive and very interesting that someone recognized what he had done. We are used to getting cussed at and not these kinds of letters.

"This is a testament to what our police officers do every day. Our job is to go out and make sure people are safe and that is what Officer Collins did that night."

This Facial Transplant Is Being Described As A Medical Miracle

by Alicia Melville-Smith

Courtesy of LiveOnNY

In what's being described as a major scientific milestone, doctors on Monday announced they had successfully performed the most extensive face transplant in medical history, transforming the appearance of a volunteer firefighter who was badly burned in the line of duty.

Staff at New York University's Langone Medical Center in New York City announced the successful completion of the transplant on Patrick Hardison, 41, of Senatobia, Mississippi, who was left with disfiguring burns to his face and scalp during a search-and-rescue operation in a burning home in September 2001.

"[Hardison's] surgery sets new standards in facial transplantation and will serve as an amazing learning tool," said professor of reconstructive surgery Eduardo Rodriguez in a statement.

Source 3D Systems

The team was able to successfully transplant a set of ears, ear canals, chin, cheeks, and an entire nose to Hardison's face.

Rodriguez also highlighted the achievement in successfully transplanting the facial donor's eyelids and blinking mechanisms to Hardison.

"This is a major milestone — one that could lead to preserving vision in future patients," Rodriguez said.

Hardison was disfigured when the roof of the building he was searching collapsed on him leading to the loss of his eyelids, ears, lips, most of his nose, his eyebrows, and his hair.

A team of more than 100 doctors, nurses, technical, and support staff worked for 26 hours to complete the transplant in August.

The surgery was made possible through the donation of a face by David P. Rodebaugh, a registered organ donor who was killed in an accident in Brooklyn.

After his death, loved ones of Rodebaugh, 26, agreed to donate his face — as well as his heart, liver, and kidneys — to save the lives of others.

Face transplants have been performed successfully before; in 2012, a team at the University of Maryland Medical Center replaced a gun attack victim's face with that of an anonymous donor — including both jaws, teeth, and tongue.

Just last year, a Vermont woman also received an extensive face transplant after her face was disfigured when her estranged husband doused her with lye in June 2007.

Hardison said he chose to go public with the story of his recovery because he wanted it to give hope to other burn victims.

"I am very excited to share my story to help others, especially fellow firefighters and members of the armed services who have been injured in the line of duty," he said.

"I am deeply grateful to my donor and his family," he added. "Even though I did not know who they would be, I prayed for them every day, knowing the difficult decision they would have to make in order to help me. I hope they see in me the goodness of their decision."

Since his accident, Hardison has endured more than 70 surgeries to begin repairing his burns, but the damage to his face had left him unable to return to a normal life.

He was brought to the attention of Dr. Rodriquez by a member of his church and fellow firefighter who wrote to the doctor to describe Hardison's situation.

“When I met Patrick and heard his story, I knew that I had to do all that I could to help him — and every member of my team felt the same way," said Rodriquez, who had previously performed a facial transplant in 2012.

Medical staff used advanced modeling and 3D-printed, patient-specific cutting guides designed from the recipient’s and the donor’s CT scans to provide the most precise “snap-fit” of the skeleton.

Rodebaugh's mother Nancy Millar said it was important to her to honor David's decision to donate his organs so "something good could come from something so tragic."

“We decided to honor David’s decision to donate his organs — so that others like Patrick Hardison can live on in his memory and benefit from his generosity," she said. "I wish Patrick and his family all the best as he embarks on a new life.”

Patrick Hardison is picture before surgery, and then after surgery on Wednesday.

News in Brief: Man Searching For Part Of Chicken Tender Thin Enough To Fit Into Plastic Dipping Sauce Cup

Philip.paulsson

haha love the pic.

CHESTER, PA—Slowly rotating the deep-fried strip of white meat to consider every possible angle from which it could be dunked, local man Brian Oakley is, according to sources, currently searching for a part of his chicken tender thin enough to fit into the plastic dipping sauce cup. “The end fit in the cup pretty easily, but now that I’ve taken the first bite, the middle part is too thick to get in there,“ Oakley told reporters as he carefully examined the crunchy, breaded strip of chicken before flipping it around and confirming that the back end was also too wide for the two-ounce container. “Only the very tip will get any sauce. I guess I could just take another bite and then it’ll be thin enough, but I don’t want to eat a dry part.” At press time, Oakley had resorted to scraping the chicken tender ...

Verizon offers $10-a-day global roaming that uses your existing data plan

by Jon Brodkin
Philip.paulsson

$10/day?! That's their answer to T-Mobile's free unlimited international data plan? Weak.

(credit: Verizon Wireless)

Verizon Wireless today announced a $10-per-day international roaming offer that taps into your existing service plan instead of charging for every megabit, voice call, or text.

The new "TravelPass" plan costs just $2 for each 24-hour period in Mexico and Canada, and $10 in more than 65 other countries.

Verizon's press release mocks rival T-Mobile for offering free but slow international roaming. "Unlike other providers, Verizon doesn't use gimmicks like 'free data roaming' to lure you in and then put you on a slower network and restrict your data use while outside of the US," Verizon said.

Teenagers' maths theorem could pave way for interstellar travel

Two teenagers have created a mathematical theorem that could help pave the way for interstellar travel.

Xuming Liang and Ivan Zelich, both 17, corresponded through an online maths forum when they realised they were both working on the same problem.

It is now said the result of their collaboration may change the face of mathematics forever.

Not bad for a couple of high schoolers.

Xuming, who is originally from Guangzhou in China but now lives in San Diego and Ivan, from Australia, told MailOnline they spoke though Google chat and Facebook and worked in ‘shifts’ – when one went to sleep, the other took over.

‘Since our time zones don’t concur, one of us tend to stay up really late to complement the other,’ Xuming said.

‘He was the only person I could find who I connected with mathematically,’ Zelich added.

‘I found out we were both working on the same problem at the same time but he was more geared towards one side of the geometry and I was more geared towards the algebraic and string theory side.’

Zelich said the main application of their calculations was ‘understanding the structures of the universe.’

‘The theorem will contribute to our understanding of intergalactic travel because string theory predicts existence shortcuts in space, or so-called “wormholes” to cut through space.’

‘It also helps finding minimal possible math between certain planets based on their structure,’ he said.

Zelich said that school was restrictive and he didn’t have the time to chase the top grades due to the effort he was spending on his at-home research. He was offered a university scholarship aged 14 but turned it down. He speaks six languages, has completed his piano diploma and has represented Queensland in chess at the Nationals.

Xuming said that he was ‘mediocre’ in all subjects except maths and had tutored university students over the summer.

A paper on the pair’s theorem entitled ‘Generalisations of the Neuberg cubic to the Euler pencil of isopivotal cubics’ was published in the International Journal of Geometry. The teenagers are the youngest ever contributors to the journal.
