NASA's Opportunity rover celebrates 12th anniversary on Mars
Philip.paulsson90 days to 12 YEARS! Holy crap. And yet I can't buy a phone that'll be any good in two years.

This Guy Managed To Climb One Of The Pyramids And You'll Never Believe The View
Philip.paulssonHow was he not shot?
Just a casual afternoon climb…
On Monday, 18-year-old Andrej Ciesielski posted a video of him scaling the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

The Munich native, who is known for his dizzying antics, wrote on his website that the climb to the top took around 8 minutes.

Jeez.

Ciesielski told BuzzFeed France that he achieved the feat by climbing when the police weren't looking, though he was arrested upon descent.

Today, after weeks of debating with myself, I finally got the courage to ask out my best friend of 9 years. She turned me down, saying that dating me would be like adopting a puppy, and she doesn't want that kind of responsibility. FML
What Is Your Sexiness Score?
Philip.paulssonWow, this might be the most accurate test I've ever taken!
"You got: 100
You are literally the sexiest a person can be. There are probably at least eight separate people who are currently in love with you, and every time you go into the supermarket, someone faints out of pure lust."
Are you sexy? And do you know it?
A New Frontier In Low-Carb Snacking: Meat Snacks, Like Lunchables For Adults
Philip.paulssonLOL Adult lunchables! I'd get crucified if I brought this in to work.

Venessa Wong / BuzzFeed News
There's a new player in the high-protein snacking game long ruled by yogurt, jerky and nuts: Meat processor Tyson is currently rolling out a new brand called Hillshire Snacking that involves single-serve packs of grilled chicken bites and "salame"-and-cheese plates.
Some will likely find the idea of tossing a box of pre-grilled chicken into your purse off-putting, but Tyson — which acquired Hillshire Brands in 2014 in a move to add more profitable consumer brands — thinks we are just at the start of a meat-snacking revolution.
There are a number of reasons why the company is launching a line of refrigerated, meat-based snacks. First, young consumers are leaning towards "fresh" foods over shelf-stable ones. According to market researcher NPD, "From 2003 to 2013, consumption of fresh foods — fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs — grew by 20 percent to over 100 billion eatings." Second, people are really into protein, a trend that fueled the Greek yogurt boom. Third, as always, they value convenience — meat and cheese aren't new, but now you don't even have to bother putting it in a ziplock bag.
"From the beginning, we knew this was a big idea," said Jeff Caswell, vice president and general manager of Hillshire Snacking. "Strategically we knew that introducing a protein snack that had unique flavors, targeting that upbeat food explorer was going to be successful."
It's a category that is growing in grocery stores. Sales of "refrigerated meat, cheese, cracker, dessert" products rose by nearly 13.5% in 2015 to $1.8 billion, according to data from Chicago-based market researcher IRI. The largest producers now are Kraft, which makes Lunchables and Oscar Mayer P3 (launched in 2014), Armour, and Hormel.
Caswell, for his part, rebuffs the description of Hillshire Snacking as an adult Lunchable: "This is really designed and being consumed by people that were that were not in the combos category before."

Venessa Wong / BuzzFeed News
Hillshire Snacking has been long in the making. Tyson started testing the brand in 2014 in 500 stores, primarily in Denver, Cincinnati and 250 Target stores. The meat and cheese plates cost $2.99 and the chicken bites $2.49. In 2015, the young brand's annual sales reached about $7.3 million, according to IRI.
What did Hillshire learn from this long test? Mainly, they decided to arrange the meats and cheeses like shingles instead of in a single stack. "People were more interested in seeing the product and the slices in the pack," Caswell said, so Hillshire refined the "salame" display.
Hillshire Snacking began rolling out nationwide in grocery stores this month.

Anti-GMO research may be based on manipulated data
Philip.paulssonScrew those anti-GMO folks.

(credit: U.S. Bureau of Reclamation)
An ongoing investigation at the University of Naples in Italy is looking into allegations that some studies of genetically modified crops included data that was manipulated to make it appear that the consumption of GMOs is harmful to mammals. Frederico Infascelli, the researcher who led these studies, claims that the allegations are false, but evidence has surfaced of widespread image manipulation in his work.
Genetically modified crops, more commonly known as genetically modified organisms or GMOs, have been engineered to make plants heartier in challenging environmental conditions, more resistant to pests or disease, or augmented for a better nutritional profile. Studies have found that GMOs can be effective in reducing the use of pesticides, increasing overall crop yield, and in increasing farmer’s profits. Some of the more common GMO crops include rapeseed, corn, cotton, papaya, soybeans, and beets.
In general, most scientists, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, concur that GMOs do not present an increased risk to human health relative to non-modified foods, though the growth and consumption of GMOs has been riddled with controversy. Partially in response to public concerns, some countries require foods using GMOs to be labeled as such.

Don’t look now, but the PC is the world’s biggest gaming platform
Philip.paulssonWoah, nice.

I dare you to think up a better image for a "PC gaming win." (credit: dno1967b / Flickr)
If you follow the business side of the game industry at all, you're probably sick of hearing how mobile gaming is a fast-growing business juggernaut destined to overtake all other forms of digital entertainment (in strict dollars-and-cents terms). It might surprise you to hear that a new report shows the humble PC generated more worldwide gaming revenue than any other segment of the market last year.
SuperData's worldwide digital games market report uses sampled data from tens of millions of gamers as well as publishers, developers, and payment providers themselves, giving us one of the best public estimates of overall spending on downloadable games. The bottom line for 2015: PC gaming is "an undervalued platform... contrary to the amount of attention that is generally paid to mobile gaming, total revenues from the PC gaming market is larger ($32 billion) than that of mobile ($25 billion)."
If anything, SuperData's measurement undersells PC gaming's revenue-generating potential since it doesn't take retail sales into account (while retail sales are a small part of the PC gaming market these days, they're practically nonexistent in the mobile space). For some additional context, the worldwide market for console game software (which is still largely dependent on retail disc sales) was estimated at $25.1 billion, according to a NewZoo report. Even combining three major hardware platforms, console software still can't match the revenue-generating potential of PC games.

17 Reasons Why Older Leo DiCaprio Is Better Than Young Leo DiCaprio
Philip.paulssonA lady at the bar last week came up to me and told me I looked like a young Leo. She also had a weird sounding British accent. Turned out she was from Scranton, PA, and had gone to school in the UK. LOL Scranton.
But let’s be real, Leo at any age is bae.
I'd like to start off by saying that yes, young Leo was adorable.

These Extraordinary Close-Up Photos Of Animal Eyes Look Out Of This World
Philip.paulssonCool.
The February issue of National Geographic features an extraordinary up-close look at the eyes of various animal species.
As part of the magazine feature, British science journalist Ed Yong discusses the anatomy and evolution of eyes, including how an animal's environment contributes to the function and appearance of its eyes, and how it sees the world.
Yong discusses the science behind animal eyes with zoologist Dan-Eric Nilsson of Lund University in Sweden. “If you ask people what animal eyes are used for, they’ll say: same thing as human eyes,” says Nilsson in National Geographic. “But that’s not true. It’s not true at all.”

I have a pretty good idea about how you kids see your old man. Sure, I know you love me and all that, but don’t think I don’t notice how you look at me—you think I haven’t got a cool bone in my body! Well, it might surprise you to find out that your lame old dad used to be quite the meth head back in the day.
