Is anyone else having bugs in theoldreader? The hotkeys aren't working properly, and things aren't getting marked as read when I scroll through them, I have to manually click the button. Ugh.

Even if you have thousands of Facebook friends, you can probably only count on a handful in a pinch, according to a new study. The author, anthropologist Robin Dunbar, should know. He's the guy who came up with Dunbar's number, which shows that in th...

Shake Shack Makes The "Chick’n Shack" Available Everywhere

by Venessa Wong

Liz Clayman / Via Shake Shack

Shake Shack announced on Thursday that its fried chicken sandwich, now officially dubbed the "Chick’n Shack," is now available at all U.S. locations.

It is, as CEO Randy Garutti put it, "a new era for Shake Shack."

It's the first time the New York-based chain has offered a burger nationwide that's not beef or mushroom. The addition makes sense: chicken consumption has been growing in the U.S., with Americans eating an average of about 84.7 pounds of chicken each in 2014 versus just 54.2 pounds of beef, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And in fast food, the raging success of Chick-fil-A has inspired a flurry of ambitious fried chicken sandwiches.

The Chick’n Shack — which costs $6.29 — launched in a few Brooklyn, N.Y. locations in July to much fanfare.

A review in Esquire concluded, "The proprietary Shack bun is as soft as the pillow you'll need to take a nap after you eat the thing. The chicken, itself, is crispier than Chick-Fil-A's—by far—but is just as juicy and wedding dress white inside. The sandwich's niche is furthered carved by the extra vinegary pickles, an acidic flourish that cuts through all the heaviness." As for the sandwich's unique characteristic, "The ChickenShack succeeds because of that buttermilk mayo. It'll make you think of liquified biscuits 'n' gravy."

The sandwich quickly sold out before being brought back to the three outlets. Then, Shake Shack launched the sandwich in late 2015 in restaurants in Istanbul, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.

The last six months have been a sort of test period. Garutti told BuzzFeed News before the announcement there were operational challenges that needed to be worked out before the sandwich could be launched at a larger scale. "There's a lot of work to it. It's a fried item instead of a grilled item like the burger is so it's different, which is why we want to take our time."

Alas, a few locations will still be chicken-less — the JFK Airport Shacks and stadium outlets — and the restaurant in New York's Theater District will get it late.

International Space Station Transits Saturn

International Space Station Transits Saturn From low Earth orbit to the outer Solar System, this remarkable video frame composite follows the International Space Station's transit of Saturn. On January 15, the well-timed capture from a site near Dulmen, Germany required telescope and camera to be positioned along the predicted transit centerline, a path only 40 meters wide. That put the camera about 1,140 kilometers away from the space station during the transit and 1,600,000,000 kilometers away from Saturn. A video rate of 42 frames per second follows the orbital outpost moving quickly from lower right to upper left. The transit itself lasted about 0.02 seconds, with one frame showing the station directly in front of the ringed gas giant. Of course, you could also try to capture the International Space Station as it transits Jupiter.

Space balloon company finds a home in Arizona

by Mariella Moon

So the big thing a while back was trying to build a space plane, where you fly into the upper atmosphere then use rockets to boost into orbit. Why couldn't you just balloon up there with some rockets attached? One of the biggest barriers is getting through our thick atmosphere. Though I guess going from 0 to 7.8km/s is no easy feat from that point, either.

Arizona's Pima County residents could soon brag about having a cool space balloon port, according to TechCrunch. The county's local government has agreed to award World View $14.5 million to build its port in the area, ending the company's year-long...

'Dark noodles' in the Milky Way could be missing matter

Philip.paulsson

The Pastafarians were right! Ramen.

Updated January 22, 2016 10:51:11

Mysterious lumps in gas clouds connecting stars in the Milky Way could comprise a significant amount of the galaxy's missing matter, according to Australian scientists.

Key points:

  • Noodle-shaped lumps lie in gas between stars in the Milky Way
  • Discovery challenges understanding of gas in Milky Way
  • Lumps in gas work like lenses, focusing and defocusing radio waves
  • They may make up a substantial amount of galaxy's dark matter

The invisible structures, reported in the journal Science, are thought to be shaped like noodles, lasagne sheets or possibly hazelnuts.

"These observations provide us with a new understanding of the galaxy's interstellar gas which is important for recycling stellar material for new star formation," said the study's lead author Dr Keith Bannister of the CSIRO.

The structures appear to be lumps in the thin electrically charged gas that lies between the stars in our galaxy.

"These lumps of gas work like lenses, focusing and defocusing the radio waves from more distant objects, making them appear to strengthen and weaken over a period of days, weeks or months," Dr Bannister said.

"It's the same as looking at a light through a wine glass, as you move the wine glass you'll see the shape of the light bulb changing and getting brighter and fainter."

Astronomers first detected the mysterious clouds 30 years ago when they saw radio waves from a bright quasar in a distant galaxy varying wildly in strength.

However, back then scientists had trouble working out what they were because they only had two frequencies to look at.

Powerful telescope enabled detailed study of gas

Using the powerful Australia Compact Array Telescope, Dr Bannister and colleagues were able to study the gas cloud in more detail as it passed in front of a quasar called PKS 1939-315 in the constellation Sagittarius.

"In our new data instead of just two channels, we have 9,000 channels," Dr Bannister said.

"We saw two bumps in the data — it first got brighter for a few days, it then became much fainter before getting brighter again and finally going back to normal."

The optical light from the quasar did not change while the radio lensing took place, indicating that optical surveys for these events would not detect them.

This is important because we don't know much about these things or what they do to the structure of the galaxy and the gas in the Milky Way.

Dr Keith Bannister

The authors estimate the lens is about the size of the Earth's orbit around the Sun and lies approximately 3,000 light-years away.

The new observations have allowed Dr Bannister and colleagues to develop their first estimates of the clouds' shape.

"This means we're able to start ruling out different geometries for these objects — such as solid balls of gas or bent sheets of gas. It's like going from black and white to colour," Dr Bannister said.

There are still a couple of geometries that Dr Bannister and colleagues are looking at, including sheets of gas seen edge-on or hollow noodle-like cylinders.

"Another possibility involves lumps of gas shaped like a hazelnut and comprising a spherical shell of plasma surrounding a core of cooler neutral gas, with gravity providing the confinement to keep the cloud together," he said.

"These things are all over the Milky Way and comprise a fair proportion of the galaxy's overall mass."

Lenses could help explain missing mass problem

Dr Bannister said these lenses could help explain what astronomers call the missing mass problem.

"Current models of nucleosynthesis in the first few minutes after the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago predict that far more hydrogen, helium and lithium was produced than what we can actually find," he said.

"The leading candidate is the hot plasma contained in the filaments and knots of the web-like, large-scale structure of the universe. Our lenses provide another candidate."

The authors still do not know how these invisible lenses form or their composition and temperature.

"This is important because we don't know much about these things or what they do to the structure of the galaxy and the gas in the Milky Way," Dr Bannister said.

The man, who can’t be named for legal reasons, has to tell North Yorkshire Police in England about any sexual activity at 24 least hours before it happens, or he faces up to five years in jail.

A man has been told he can't have sex unless he tell the police 24 hours in advance – and he could face jail if he doesn't.

The man, who is from York but can't be named for legal reasons, was given a sexual risk order on Thursday at York magistrates court, which is currently sitting in Leeds because of flooding.

Anna Gowthorpe / PA WIRE

The Press reported that the order means that if he begins a sexual relationship with any woman or plans to have a one-off sexual encounter, he must tell North Yorkshire Police 24 hours in advance.

The order also restricts his internet use and compels him to tell police about any device that he could use to call or text people.

It's an interim sexual order and a full hearing will take place on 19 May, to decide whether to grant a full sexual risk order. A full order would last for a minimum of two years and can have no maximum duration.

Breaching the order could result in a jail term of up to five years, but someone with an order can appeal against it.

BuzzFeed News spoke to the man's solicitor, who declined to comment but confirmed that the order is in place.

North Yorkshire police declined to comment. York magistrates court said it could not provide a copy of the order because of reporting restrictions.

Magistrates courts, the police or the National Crime Agency can apply for them in cases where "an individual has done an act of a sexual nature and as a result poses a risk of harm to the public in the UK or adults or vulnerable children overseas," according to Home Office guidelines.

The wide-ranging order can prevent people from "doing anything described in it".

I Built A Goddamn Bookshelf With My Bare Hands And You Can Too

by Daniel Dalton
Philip.paulsson

That thing is going to fall over.

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

Books are ace. Just like reading on a Kindle, but with a souvenir at the end! The trouble with books is that they multiply. Before you know it, you're an octogenarian hoarder squeezing through tunnels of books and collecting jars of your own piss.

This, storage fans, is where shelves come in. By far the easiest and cheapest way to get shelves is to wait for a relative to die and steal theirs. Or you can go to Ikea. Not me. I decided to build something I saw on Etsy, because it would look better on Instagram.

As we discovered when I built my desk, and again when I made my blanket fort, I live for the sweet, sweet validation of social media approval. Here's how I built my shelves:

1. Source materials

1. Source materials

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

In order to build a bookshelf from scaffolding, you need some scaffolding. I got mine from the internet. The design called for six 2.4-metre wooden boards, 12 metres of 33.7mm steel tube, and 88 cast steel fixings. Not a cheap way to make shelves, granted. But you save a lot of money when you're aggressively single.

The place I ordered from will cut the tube for you, which is definitely the best option if you don't have precision cutting tools. I don't have precision cutting tools. All I have is a junior hacksaw and a deluge of mood disorders. I asked them to cut it for me.

2. Measure up

2. Measure up

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

You can buy new wooden boards, but I bought used ones for that authentic "yes, I'm a bit of wanker" look. There was originally meant to be a seventh shelf, upon which I'd place my dreams. But that won't be necessary now, will it, Julie?

I marked out the fixings at 50cm intervals along the first board, 1cm from either edge (this is so the wall clamps line up properly later). Because they are used, and because scaffolding boards aren't meant for construction, there is a slight variation in width and length. A bit like me over Christmas.

3. Drill it good

3. Drill it good

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

In order to get the fixings in a uniform place on each shelf, I measured up and marked the holes on one board, then I used that board as a jig to drill into the other 5 boards, lining up the back edge and clamping them together while I drilled.

For those not familiar with DIY terms, a jig is a type of dance.

4. Score and seven years ago

4. Score and seven years ago

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

I then cut the boards cut down to size, but with a saw, not with the kind of words my parents use when they text me.

Wood tends to splinter when sawn, so to get a neater edge score the line with a Stanley knife first. This breaks the fibres and makes you look like you know what you're doing.

Before you actually cut anything, measure it a second time just to be certain. Carpentry is like a date with Cara from Accounts: You don't get a second chance. As my dad always says: "Stop calling us, we don't like you."

5. Sand another thing

5. Sand another thing

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

Being used, the boards were stained with various building materials and dirt, and had plenty of dents and rough edges. You want the boards to look used, but not this used. A good sanding will sort them out. Instagram filters only hide so much.

I used a rough-grade paper on an orbital sander. It stripped the undesired rustic hue off quicker than I shed my jeans when I get home at the end of the day. If only it were as easy to get rid of memories. Sigh.

6. And the rest was rust and sawdust

6. And the rest was rust and sawdust

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

It being a rainy day, I had to sand indoors, and that meant dust. A lot of dust. I spread dust sheets over my bed and other furniture and got to work. A couple of passes on each board and they turned out pretty clean.

After an hour of sanding I was covered head to toe in dust, turning me prematurely grey. Unfortunately I forgot to buy a dust mask. You should have seen what came out of my nose in the shower. Nothing makes you contemplate your life choices quite like violently ejecting clumps of sawdust-encrusted mucus from your sinuses.

7. I need a fix

7. I need a fix

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

Now the timber is fully prepped, you can start bolting the whole thing together. At this stage it's a bit like hipster Meccano, with a kit you've made yourself. Mostly. If you're too young to remember Meccano, it's what virgins did before video games were invented.

I used 6mm nuts and bolts to join two "feet" fixings at either side of the board. The first board I did by hand with a wrench but with four bolts per fixing, that took forever. Then I bought a socket driver for my electric drill which was much quicker. Until my drill died.

RIP, Bosch: You died as you lived, screwing everything in sight.

8. Build it

8. Build it

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

With fixings attached to the bottom two boards, I slotted in the scaffolding tube. I had the tubes cut into 30cm sections, 36 in total, plus six 10cm sections for the feet. The tubes fit easily into the feet and are then held in place by a "grub" screw, which you can tighten with a ¼-inch Allen key. Simple.

I fitted together the first three boards flat on the floor, along with the feet, before standing it upright. Because you're adding a lot of steel, the structure is heavy as fuck, so if you don't stand it up at this stage you might not get it up at all.

A bit like that time I went out with Cara from Accounts.

9. Layer cake

9. Layer cake

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

Adding boards from here gets trickier. I found it best to place the tubes into the feet on the lower shelf first, leaving them loose, then lifting the new shelf up and slotting the tube into the bottom, working from one end to the other. I also pulled the unit away from the wall, because one slip and you can say goodbye to your pristine white paint.

If you have friends, call them, it'll be much easier. I don't have friends, and strangers are just people I hate whose names I don't know. Like any reasonably self-serious anti-hero in the Western canon, I work, invariably, alone. Luckily I'm tall as shit.

10. Another level

10. Another level

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

Yes. Unlike me, this shelf is well balanced. I quickly realised that the floor in my room, however, is not level, so I was able to adjust the shelves as I went to make sure they were right at least. Take that, Victorian-era builders.

The floor is only out by a centimetre or so, but it's worth keeping an eye on. If you just assume everything is fine, that's when you get to the end of the project only to realise the shelves have left you for a waiter. I'm only kidding. Shelves have a heart.

11. Are we nearly there yet?

11. Are we nearly there yet?

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

Slowly, like really slowly – this project took for-fucking-ever – the shelves began to stack up. Bolting the feet to each board is seriously time-intensive without a power screwdriver (you live on in our hearts, Bosch!) so leave yourself lots of time.

Again, because they are used timber boards, there is some slight warping to contend with, but I think it adds to the overall aesthetic. You hear that, Julie? Sometimes wonky is good!

12. Details schmetails

12. Details schmetails

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

For the top shelf, I decided to cut slots for the bolt-heads into the wood, so they'd sit flush and make that shelf useable. There aren't many problems in life you can't fix with a Stanley knife and a hammer.

The shelves will stand upright without any weight on, but you don't want them tipping over once laden with books, so securing them is a must. To fix the shelves to the wall, I slipped four of these brackets over the back poles before putting on the top shelf.

You can fix the brackets into the wall with your preferred plug/screw combo, depending on whether your wall is plasterboard or brick. Knowing my landlord, my wall is probably made of Ryvita and disenchantment, so I took no chances.

13. Books!

13. Books!

Yes, that is a very tall door.

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

A bookshelf without books is just a ladder to nowhere.

The finished article is 2 metres x 2.4 metres. It won't hold all my books, but it'll hold enough. I still haven't figured out how I'll organise the books (chromatically? autobiographically? drunkly?) but until then, I just made it look pretty for Instagram.

Here are some highlights:

My Catcher In The Rye collection in its new home.

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

My almost-finished Penguin Drop Caps collection (six to go).

Daniel Dalton / BuzzFeed

After three days – around 20 hours of work – and £450 in materials, my bookshelf is done. It was a terrible idea. It took forever to build, and for that price I could have had about six double-width Billy bookcases from Ikea, and had space to store many more books.

But anyone can go to Ikea. Just like anyone can leave me for a waiter. Not everyone can have a goddamn handmade bookshelf, especially one so majestic. Just look at it. Legitimate bookshelf boner. If only Cara from Accounts could see how upright I am now.

It won't keep me warm, but it will keep me happy. Bad ideas never looked so good.

Spaniards Are Throwing Turnips At A Beast-Like Figure Because Tradition, That's Why

by Jason Wells

For as long as he can withstand the punishment, the beast-like "Jarramplas" figure is roaming the streets of the small Spanish town of Piornal while hundreds of residents pelt him with turnips.

Revellers throw turnips at the Jarramplas as he makes his way through the streets.

Sergio Perez / Reuters

It's part of an annual festival in which a man dresses up in a brightly ribboned protective costume to take the beating before the town erupts in a festival of music and food.

At this year's event on Tuesday and Wednesday, the volunteer was 34-year-old Raul Beites — and he sure took a lot of turnip hits.

Sergio Perez / Reuters

There are several theories about how the Jarramplas festival started. Some say it's an ode to the Roman myth in which Hercules kills the fire-breathing giant, Caco, for terrorizing local villagers.

Reuters

Other speculate that the annual tradition is related to American Indian ceremonies that were seen by the first conquerors, or perhaps to celebrate the story of a cattle thief who was expelled by villagers.

In NYC, pay phones become free Wi-Fi hotspots—and masturbation stations

by Annalee Newitz
Philip.paulsson

Oh gross.

Hot Octopuss, a sex toy company, provides Internet for anyone who wants to relieve a little stress. (credit: Hot Octopuss)

This month will see the first rollout of LinkNYC's free Wi-Fi hotspots in New York City, which are set to replace nearly 7,500 neglected public telephones. Along with this experimental urban upgrade, New Yorkers can also expect to see another pay phone replacement idea: a "GuyFi" booth where men can "relieve stress" with a laptop and chair behind a privacy curtain.

Last week, a sex toy company called Hot Octopuss converted an unused phone booth at 28th Street and 5th Avenue into its GuyFi chamber of self-love by adding a black privacy curtain, a chair, and a laptop with high-speed Internet. Clearly playing on the buzz about LinkNYC's upgrades to New York's pay phone infrastructure, Hot Octopuss sent out a press release explaining that this was all about health:

According to Time Out, a remarkable 39% of New Yorkers "self-soothe" in the workplace to alleviate stress. Hot Octopuss has created the GuyFi booth to take this habit out of the office and into a more suitable environment designed to give the busy Manhattan man the privacy, and the high-speed Internet connection, he deserves.

The company reported that at least 100 men used the booth on its opening day last week. Of course, public masturbation is illegal—and a rep from Hot Octopuss told Mashable, "We may be insinuating that these booths could be used in whichever way anyone would like to 'self soothe,' [but] the brand is not actively encouraging people to masturbate in public as that is an illegal offense." No word on how fast the Internet connection was, or whether there would be any efforts to help women "self soothe" at a rate equal to men in the workplace.
