Parents Wish Weak-Willed Daughter Would Push Back Against Violin Lessons Just A Little
Philip.paulssonLOL
ARDMORE, PA—Expressing frustration at how she continues to remain silent and passively go along with whatever they say, the parents of Olivia Edison, 10, told reporters Wednesday they wish their weak-willed daughter would push back even just a little against the violin lessons they make her take. “Jeez, what’s wrong with her? She hasn’t said one thing about how she doesn’t like the violin or how she hates having to practice her scales every day—what a little pushover,” said Olivia’s mother, Nicole Edison, 41, lamenting the fact that her cowardly daughter has yet to mutter an aggravated comment under her breath or roll her eyes at her parents even once despite a demanding schedule of weekend classes and out-of-town recitals that would elicit considerable resistance from a less gutless child. “We made her rehearse for two hours yesterday, and she just sat there taking ...

The 2016 Word Of The Year Is Pretty Awful, According To Dictionary.com
Philip.paulssonugh.
Disappointing.
So... the 2016 word of the year according to Dictionary.com? It's xenophobia.

The word means "fear or hatred of foreigners, people from different cultures, or strangers" and it's been popping up a lot in cultural conversation, especially around the US presidential election and Brexit.

Mark Ralston / AFP / Getty Images
According to Dictionary.com, there was a 938% increase in search for the word on June 24 — the day after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

Interest in the term "hate crime" apparently also soared following the Brexit vote.

Interest in the word surged on June 29, too, after President Obama mentioned xenophobia in relation to Donald Trump.

Obama said that Trump's campaign was not run on populism, but “nativism or xenophobia.”

Decades after Chernobyl disaster, engineers slide high-tech shelter over reactor
Philip.paulssonSeems a little late to me...

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
On Tuesday, officials from all over the world gathered about a football field away from the Chernobyl disaster site in Ukraine. They were there to celebrate the final placement of a massive, high-tech shelter over reactor 4, which exploded in April 1986.
The shelter, called the New Safe Confinement (NSC), is a feat of engineering. Because it was too dangerous to assemble the NSC over the original shelter that was built in the weeks after the explosion, the NSC was instead built at a distance and moved—slowly, over days—on a pair of tracks parallel to the original shelter. But even that was no simple task. The NSC is 354ft (108m) tall and 843ft (257m) wide, making it the largest mobile metal structure in the world.
A Mother Elephant Didn't Actually Beat Up A Buffalo For Hurting Her Baby Calf
Philip.paulssontldr; the pics are from different times. The baby elephant in the first pic survived with bruised pride. The bull in the 2nd pic was gored straight thru by an elephant tusk and is very much dead.
The four-photo set was the perfect example of why you shouldn't get in the way of a mother and her young. Unfortunately, it's all a bit too good to be true.
The first two photos, of the moment a buffalo gores a poor, teeny-tiny baby elephant, are from National Geographic in 2014.

Conrad Cramer / Conrad Cramer / Barcroft Media
The other two photos, showing a buffalo getting flipped into the air by a huge elephant, is from January this year.
Kimberly Maurer took the photos on a trip to Kenya, where she witnessed the elephant and buffalo face-off.

Kim Maurer / Caters News Agency
"As we were watching the elephants grazing and moving toward us, the Cape Buffalo raised his head and stood up, which must have been a threatening movement for the elephants," she said.
"As the buffalo stepped toward the approaching elephants, the momma elephant trumpeted a warning and threw her trunk up in the air. The elephant moved closer to the buffalo and the buffalo decided to try to ram the elephant and they head butted. The buffalo fell to its knees after it lost the head butt."
Amazingly, the elephant continued to go after the buffalo, even after the two rammed heads.
“We were in complete shock as she then bent down and literally skewered the buffalo with her single tusk and lifted it straight up over her head with her tusk protruding from the other side of the buffalo," said Maurer.
The buffalo, Maurer reports, was very much dead.
So there you go. While the images from the tweet might not be completely accurate, the final two photos are of a mother elephant protecting the HELL out of her children.
The photos of the buffalo attacking the young elephant? Well, National Geographic reports it luckily escaped with only its pride severely bruised.

Divorced Friend Burning Through New Hobbies At Unsustainable Rate
Philip.paulssonLOL
BENTONVILLE, AR—Telling reporters they were having difficulty keeping track of all the new pastimes he was pursuing, friends of local man Mark Chapineau stated Tuesday that the recent divorcé was burning through hobbies at an unsustainable rate. “Last week, he was posting on Facebook about how he was getting into meditation, and now you can see he’s already onto black-and-white photography—boy, he’s really tearing through activities one after the other,” said Chapineau’s old college roommate Sahil Neela, adding that the 38-year-old insurance broker, whose five-year marriage ended in September, had, according to his latest status update, begun training for a marathon, despite mentioning a couple weeks prior that he had joined a rock-climbing gym. “It’s crazy. He’s throwing himself into cooking and collecting vinyl when he’s only had his microbrewing kit 24 hours. Seriously, if he doesn’t want to confront what ...

Woman Witnesses The 'Ultimate Canadian Experience' On The Subway
Philip.paulssonOh Canada.
November 18, 2016
Salma Hamidi of Toronto said strangers young and old and from very different backgrounds came together on the subway to help a man who was running late for a job interview.
Hamidi shared the heartwarming story on Facebook which now has more than 40,000 likes.

Salma Hamidi / Facebook
She wrote:
"This morning while waiting for the subway to leave Finch station, a Latino guy entered the train looking very angry and irritated. Sitting down in front of me, he was holding his head and kept saying 'OH GOD.'
The Russian guy sitting beside him asked if everything was okay, in a pretty heavy accent. He said he has a horrible headache and is running late for an interview. Overhearing the conversation, I offered him Advil (cause let's face it, I don't leave my house without it!). He took it and thanked me but said he doesn't have water so he'll have it later.
The middle eastern woman sitting beside me wearing a hijab, took out a juice box from her kid's backpack and gave it to him telling him that if he takes it now he'll feel better by the time he gets to the interview. He started thanking all of us for helping him out and said he's nervous for the interview.
The Russian told him to walk in confidently and to tie his hair back if he can.
A Chinese teenager sitting on his other side, handed him a hair tie saying she has a million of them.
I told him if he gets in late, to apologize but not bring excuses. Nobody likes excuses.
The Muslim lady told him to smile a lot, people trust easier when you smile.
We got to his station, wished him good luck and off he went.
Now if THIS isn't the ultimate Canadian experience short of a beaver walking into a bar holding a jar of maple syrup, I don't know what is!"
Hamidi told CBC Toronto that the subway ride moved her and that she's happy so many others get to hear her story.
Pope Francis Declares Abortion Forgivable
Philip.paulssonNice.

Two Moose Locked In Mortal Combat Found Frozen In Ice
Philip.paulssonThat is some crazy shit right there.
Tag yourself in this photo.
Two hikers in Alaska came across two bull moose earlier this month frozen in ice while locked in mortal combat.

Jeff Erickson / Via facebook.com
As in, they literally somehow drowned while fighting each other to what ended up being the death. And then the water froze.

Jeff Erickson / Via facebook.com
Jeff Erickson wrote on Facebook that he and Brad Ungalek came across the moose encased in ice near Unalakleet, Alaska, along the Bering Sea. Moose bulls tend to be most aggressive toward each other in the fall during mating season, and were likely battling over a female or territory.

Dan Joling / AP
Bill Samuel, a moose expert at the University of Alberta in Canada, told National Geographic that while he has never seen anything like it, the enormous strength of moose bulls, combined with the irregular shapes of their antlers, can result in vice-like entanglements.

There’s A Stunningly Creepy Pier In The U.K. That You Have To See

Well, there's a real-life terrifying abandoned fairground in Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset: Birnbeck Pier. Photographer Ben Birchall has documented the current dilapidated state of the 149-year-old attraction, which is still standing – just.

The Friends of the Old Pier Society, a nonprofit organisation, was formed in 1996 to save the ancient pier from destruction. According to the society, the island that Birnbeck Pier is built on was once known as Berne Island, with the earliest recorded owner being John Pigott of Brockley in 1696.

In the mid-1800s, Weston was becoming a popular place to live and a committee was formed in 1845 to promote the need for a pier at Birnbeck. Work started the following year on a suspension bridge connecting the island to the coast. However, bad weather and strikes forced the project into bankruptcy. In 1864 a successful campaign raised £20,000 and a foundation stone for the new pier was laid, with a bridge to the island built two years later.

Birnbeck Pier was designed by famous pier builder Eugenius Birch and opened on 5 June 1867, with the day celebrated as a public holiday in the town, along with fireworks, cannon salutes, and the sound of church bells.
At first, there were few amusements on the island, along with a small pavilion, but 120,000 people visited in the first three months after opening.

Disaster struck on Boxing Day of 1897 when most of the buildings were destroyed by fire. Architect Hans Price designed the new buildings, which were completed just eight months later.

In 1910 the southern end of the island was increased by half an acre with a concrete platform, which housed a roller-skating rink, a bioscope theatre (an early type of cinema), a water chute ride, and a flying machine. Throughout the 1920s and early '30s the pier was the top attraction for visitors.

However, World War II saw setbacks for the pier. In 1941 it was closed to the public and used by the Admiralty with all the rides removed. It was then turned into HMS Birnbeck, a secret facility for testing weapons.

It only took 17 years: Metallica’s full catalog is now on Napster
Philip.paulssonHuh? wha? Napster is still a thing?

Napster and Metallica, together again—and they look so happy about it, too! (credit: Sam Machkovech)
Metallica's first full album in eight years launched on Friday, and as with most modern albums, it went on sale on a variety of digital storefronts. One of those sellers was more noteworthy than the others, of course, as the album launch coincided with Metallica's first-ever warm, hugging embrace of Napster.
Earlier this week, the band and company announced that Metallica's entire catalog would finally launch on the Napster service on Friday. The $10/£10 a month music service currently resembles all-you-can-stream subscription services like Spotify and Google Play Music, and Napster's fee now includes every published song by Hetfield and Co., from 1983's Kill 'Em All to this week's Hardwired... To Self-Destruct.
Of course, the Napster of today is different than the Napster that drummer Lars Ulrich lashed out against in 1999. What was once a totally free, peer-to-peer service for the trading of MP3s has since been shuffled from corporate handler to corporate handler. After its transformation to an iTunes-styled MP3 store, Napster was taken over by Best Buy in 2008 before being dealt to Rhapsody three years later.
