An age old problem: Should men shave their faces up or down? [Interesting]
Philip.paulssonArticle says go with the grain. Which is what every "expert" says. But I don't get any of the razor burn or whatever when I go against the grain. Fortunately, I only encounter this issue about once or twice a week.
American Voices: Casey Kasem Missing
Philip.paulssonSeriously? He disappeared?? I hope he has a story like in that book I keep recommending (The 100yr Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared)!
Mario Kart 8 review: One step forward, one step back
Philip.paulssonI miss Mario Kart!

It's too easy to dismiss the Mario Kart series as a past-its-prime throwback that's holding Nintendo back, a family friendly nostalgia-fest that becomes more of a pale echo of the company's golden era with each passing year. I'd argue instead that Nintendo has done a great job keeping the franchise fresh over the years, adding enough new ideas and tweaks to the solid core with each release to make Mario Kart a must-play rite of passage for each new piece of Nintendo hardware. Sure, some games in the series have been more revolutionary than others, but Mario Kart games are far from the phoned in, more-of-the-same, semi-annual sequels that they could be.
Mario Kart 8 keeps this pattern going for the, um, eighth time, providing a deceptively solid racer beneath its candy-colored exterior. The changes might be relatively slight this time around, and some of the alterations have bafflingly made things worse, but all in all, this is still the kind of game that gets people to buy Nintendo consoles.
Hover in HD
The most striking improvement this time around, truth be told, might just be the HD graphics. That might seem like an odd thing to stress as a vital new feature for a series in 2014, but loading up the game for the first time, it's easy to wonder how the series got by without the increased resolution for this long.

Fearless Feline Caught On Tape Saving Boy From Vicious Dog Attack
Philip.paulssonWorth a watch!
Someone get this cat a medal.
A cat in Bakersfield, Calif., potentially saved a boy's life when it staved off a vicious dog attack, and the whole rescue was caught on surveillance video.
First, the boy is seen playing on his bike in the driveway.

A dog belonging to a neighbor comes around a car and sneaks up on the boy.

The dog runs up to the boy and viciously attacks him, dragging him down the pavement by the leg.

This Guy Tried To Throw A Birthday Party At The Chili's-To-Go In The Airport And It Didn't Go As Planned
Philip.paulssonNot sure what this is about, but I'm kinda glad no one showed up.
Borderline genius.
Moses Storm was hoping to have the most exclusive, high security birthday party in Hollywood. So he decided to throw it at LAX. He sent out a Facebook invite with all the info, hoping his friends could attend the soiree.

Guests were advised not to bring weapons, as they would have to go through security. They were also told that they would have to purchase seats on a flight just to get access to the terminal.

Moses decided to document the big day. He got to the airport, went through security and changed into his party clothes.

He started to worry his party was maybe TOO exclusive, but 167 guests had confirmed on FB so they had to show up, right?!

A Runaway Bouncy Castle Blew 50 Feet Into The Air With Three Children Inside
Philip.paulssonI may be a terrible person, but I really really want to see a video of a bouncy castle flying through the air and carpet-bombing some cars and the road with children.
Thankfully the children fell out of the castle before the wind blew it away completely.
Three children from upstate New York were inside a bouncy castle when the play structure was swept away by a gust of wind Monday.
Two boys, 5 and 6, and a girl, 10, fell from the structure before it was completely blown away. One of the boys fell from the inflatable playhouse to the asphalt below from at least 15 feet above ground. And the other boy fell onto a parked car. The 10-year-old suffered only minor scrapes.
The boys, 5 and 6, were rushed to Albany Medical Center, where they were treated for serious injuries. Both boys are kindergarteners at Harrison Avenue Elementary School.
As the bouncy castle was taken away by the wind, a witness took the terrifying picture above. According to spokesperson for the South Glens Falls Police, the bouncy castle was found in a field behind a nearby middle school.
The parent who set up the bouncy castle told reporters she staked it to the ground, but the wind seemed to yank out the stakes.

Russia says it may abandon Space Station by 2020 over Ukraine conflict
Philip.paulssonStupid Russia!

On Tuesday, Russia’s deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced that the country would not cooperate with the US on the International Space Station (ISS) after 2020 despite the fact that the US was hoping to use the ISS until 2024. Rogozin also said that Russia would no longer sell its NK-33 and RD-180 rocket engines to the US for military purposes. RD-180 rocket engines are used in the United States' Atlas V launch vehicle for a variety of cargoes including US military payloads.
Finally, Rogozin said that the US will have to cease operations of its 11 GPS sites within the country on June 1 unless the two nations can come to an agreement before then. After the June 1 deadline, Moscow says it will permit three months of negotiations, but if there's no agreement, the 11 stations “will be permanently terminated,” the Russian government-funded site RT wrote.
Backing out of ISS
These measures are in response to US sanctions on Russia and its top officials, which were imposed as a response to Russia's actions in the ongoing Ukraine crisis. The US says Russia is backing separatists, and Russia says the Ukrainian government is “coup-imposed” and illegitimate.

YouTube shuts down public RSS feeds of user subscriptions
Philip.paulssonWHY DOES GOOGLE HATE RSS SO MUCH?! UGH.
If you're a news junky, you probably use an RSS reader like Feed.ly to keep up with stuff on the Web. One of the nicest ways to consume YouTube subscriptions was to use an RSS feed of new videos, allowing them to show up just like news articles do. You might not have noticed yet, but Google quietly shut down this feature a few days ago.
The RSS feed, which used to be http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/base/users/[username]/newsubscriptionvideos, now throws out a "403 Forbidden" error. Previously, the URL would provide a publicly accessible feed of new subscriptions from any YouTube account, provided users didn't choose to turn off public subscription retrieval.
The feed was part of the YouTube Data API v2, which was deprecated in March of this year. The replacement—predictably named YouTube Data API v3—doesn't offer a comparable data stream. Bug reports filed for this regression as early as January 2013 have gone unanswered, save for a single response in January 2014 (yes, a year later) saying, "Patch is in the works, however we can't comment on the expected date." Now it's five months later, the feature is gone, and there's no solution in sight.

Vibram can no longer claim its goofy FiveFinger shoes offer health benefits
Philip.paulssonDoesn't someone on here have these? Whoever you are, do you like them?

Vibram has settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of making false and unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of its Vibram FiveFingers footwear, according to a report Tuesday from Runner's World. The company will put $3.75 million into an escrow account to pay out settlements to class members and will remove all claims that its products either strengthen muscles or reduce injuries—unless it comes up with proof.
Vibram was one of the driving forces behind the "barefoot" or "minimalist" running trend. Claims circulated that this style of running made athletes less prone to injury, made them more efficient, and strengthened muscles in the foot and lower leg that were otherwise made soft and ineffectual by modern, cushy running shoes. The minimalist shoes also enjoyed popularity among the finicky tech set, often adorning the feet of Google co-founder Sergey Brin and appearing recently in the satirical HBO show Silicon Valley.
Whether running barefoot is actually superior to using normal running shoes has been increasingly called into question over the last few years. While early studies showed that the barefoot style could reduce impact in areas like knees that are prone to strain, later studies found that the strain simply shifted to other parts of the leg and foot. Barefoot running is not necessarily better—just different. In response, Valerie Bezdek filed her class-action suit against Vibram in Massachusetts in March 2012.

Woman Captures Incredible Moment A FIRENADO Rose Out Of A Missouri Field
Philip.paulssonSo, a firenado is a real thing!
This is happening far too often.
Chillicothe resident Janae Copelin has shared this astonishing image of a Firenado rising out of a field in Missouri.
Copelin said the phenomenon was the “coolest/scariest” thing she had ever seen.
She said she had stopped to take a picture of a farmer burning off his field, when suddenly the wind whipped up the “fire twister”.
He added: "The firenado can then suck more brush and debris into itself and fuel the fire further."
Copelin told KMCB the sound and heat from the firenado was intense, but it only lasted for a couple of minutes.
In March, a huge firenado was caught on camera at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge in Denver, Colorado.

Web host gives FCC a 28.8Kbps slow lane in net neutrality protest
Philip.paulssonHaha nice.
Lots of people are angry about FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler's Internet "fast lane" proposal that would let Internet service providers charge Web services for priority access to consumers. But one Web hosting service called NeoCities isn't just writing letters to the FCC. Instead, the company found the FCC's internal IP address range and throttled all connections to 28.8Kbps speeds.
"Since the FCC seems to have no problem with this idea, I've (through correspondence) gotten access to the FCC's internal IP block, and throttled all connections from the FCC to 28.8kbps modem speeds on the Neocities.org front site, and I'm not removing it until the FCC pays us for the bandwidth they've been wasting instead of doing their jobs protecting us from the 'keep America's internet slow and expensive forever' lobby," NeoCities creator Kyle Drake wrote yesterday.
NeoCities offers free and paid Web hosting. As Drake noted, FCC access to NeoCities is being throttled on the home page only, and not on websites created by NeoCities users.

Here's The Foolproof Method Of Picking A Name For A Puppy
Philip.paulssonSO CUTE.
Everyone should use Puppy-Poop Bingo from now on.
Mike Rowe, the beloved host of "Dirty Jobs," adopted a new puppy over the weekend.

"Yesterday he was homeless, today he’s not, and this morning we’re getting acquainted," he explained on his Facebook page. "All I know for sure is his teeth are sharp and he craps like a puma."

"He is also nameless, which I’m hoping one of you will help correct. Call it a contest. Winner gets one of the attached photos, personalized by the dog."

After over 86,000 name suggestions were thrown into the comments section, Mike decided on a new tactic.

9 Unbelievable Supercars That Actually Exist, And Not Just In Your Mind
Philip.paulssonI'll take one of each, please.
These 9 new cars cram so much tech and speed into their skins, they make the light cycles from Tron seem like Segways.
Porsche 918 Spyder

What it is: It’s basically the Toyota Prius of the supercar world, if you can deal with that.
What’s so unbelievable: It has 887 horsepower, but it’s also a plug-in hybrid with 12 miles of electric driving range. Zero to 60 mph? Just 2.8 seconds, and yours for almost a million dollars.
Ferrari LaFerrari

What it is: It’s the Ferrari so nice they said it twice.
What’s so unbelievable: This Ferrari hybrid doesn't save the planet; the big V-12 and big batteries turn it into an ultimate track rocket. It puts out a staggering 950 horsepower while it slingshots to a top speed of about 230 mph.
Lamborghini Veneno

What it is: The craziest car yet from the guys that brought you the Countach.
What’s so unbelievable: Lambo only built four of these multi-million-dollar machines—and if you didn’t like the colors of the Italian flag, you are so out of luck. Each one has 740 horsepower and a top speed of more than 220 mph. The follow-up: 9 roadster versions, each one a cool $4.5 million.
Königsegg One:1

What it is: The fastest car ever to come from Sweden.
What’s so unbelievable: Let's start with the daring use of the umlaut and the colon in its name. The $2 million One:1 is made from carbon fiber and has 1,340 horsepower—and that means a top speed near 250 mph. It weighs 1,340 kilograms, hence the One:1 ratio thing.
Which "Firefly" Character Are You?
Philip.paulssonNot really sure who that is.... And it kinda bugged me that I couldn't choose the hottest one on the show (Summer Glau) for the ship romance question!
You Got Simon Tam: "You’re a brilliant and focused person who will do anything for your loved ones. All things academic come naturally to you, and you’re a pretty charmed person, but you’re also surprisingly worldly. You don’t trust or love many people, but the few in your inner circle know you’d go to the ends of the earth (and space) for them."
