Twitter Is Testing A Tool That Will Let You Mute People You Follow

Philip.paulsson

Also known as the "unfollow" button?

So you can finally ignore all your colleagues you feel obligated to follow.

The feature is one of the most requested on the site, according to The Verge, which first reported the feature, and will be available for a limited set of users on both the iOS and Android devices.

There are a number of examples when the feature could be specifically useful: 1) when you have to follow a colleague because it's rude not to or 2) when people incessantly live-tweet a sports match or TV show.

World Health Organization warns of “post-antibiotic” era

by John Timmer
Philip.paulsson

Kinda scary. I suppose we need a bit of a downturn in the population growth rate, but.... I'd prefer more widely available contraception and better education to take care of that, instead of death by disease.

I grew up with a constant reminder of the pre-antibiotic world. In the 1930s, my mother was riding her bicycle in the neighborhood when she was struck by a car. Her leg, badly injured, became infected. With no way of combatting the infection, her family was left with a stark choice: lose her leg or potentially lose her life. For the rest of her life, everything below one of her knees was prosthetic.

With the rise and rapid spread of antibiotic resistance, we run the risk of returning to this era. Earlier this week, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that "the problem is so serious that it threatens the achievements of modern medicine. A post-antibiotic era—in which common infections and minor injuries can kill—is a very real possibility for the 21st century."

In response, the WHO plans on coordinating a global effort to limit the spread of antibiotic resistance. As it notes, though, "Determining the scope of the problem is the first step in formulating an effective response." So the WHO has polled all of its member states to get a sense of what they know about drug-resistant pathogens within their borders. The results were released this week.

27 Things To Remember From The "24" Series Finale

Philip.paulsson

Huh, apparently I did watch the last season of 24, as I remember all this stuff. Might have to get back into it next week!

After going off the grid for four years, Jack is back. But before he returns, let’s look back on where we last left Mr. Bauer.

Remember Meredith Reed (Jennifer Westfeldt)? She's the journalist who tries to expose that the assassination of Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), the president of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan (IRK), was ordered by the Russian government.

Remember Meredith Reed (Jennifer Westfeldt)? She's the journalist who tries to expose that the assassination of Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), the president of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan (IRK), was ordered by the Russian government.

But President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) has her arrested to prevent the press from printing the truth. And that starts a string of events in which Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) tries to publicize the huge cover-up.

Fox

Then, Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin) and President Taylor have a phone conversation about the assassination and how Jack believes the orders to have President Hassan killed came from Mikhail Novakovich (Graham McTavish).

And that despite Charles' attempts to keep her in the dark, President Taylor needs to know that Russian President Yuri Suvarov (Nick Jameson) actually gave the orders. But Charles doesn't realize that Jack is listening to the call and recording him.

Jack takes Charles' right-hand man, Jason Pillar (Reed Diamond), hostage in order to gain entry into the United Nations perimeter.

Jack needs to get in undetected in order to set up his sniper rifle to kill President Suvarov as retribution for his crimes.

Jack also has Jason stitch up his open wound.

Rat out your Airbnb-using neighbors, win cash rewards

by David Kravets

Home-renting company Airbnb objected Wednesday to a proposed San Francisco ballot measure that would financially reward residents who narc on their neighbors who illegally rent out their property.

The ballot measure, proposed by three connected San Francisco residents, would allow citizens the right to file complaints against their Airbnb-using neighbors and reap up to 30 percent of the fines and back taxes if successful.

"We want to work with everyone in San Francisco who cares about home-sharing, but this proposal would make it even harder for San Franciscans to make ends meet," Airbnb spokesman Nick Papas said Wednesday in a statement. "More than half of Airbnb hosts in San Francisco use the money they earn to pay their mortgage or rent, and the overwhelming majority share only the home in which they live. We hope to work with everyone on policies that help San Franciscans pay the bills and stay in the city they love."

The Banana Selfie Campaign Against Racism Was Actually A Planned Marketing Stunt

But people are still tweeting #weareallmonkeys anyway.

instagram.com

So, it turns out the banana-heard-around the world was really a pre-planned marketing scheme.

On April 27, Brazil-born Barcelona soccer star Dani Alves wowed audiences when he mockingly ate the banana a racist fan threw at him during a match — and then kept on playing. Soon, other soccer players, Brazilian politicians, and fans worldwide were uploading photos of themselves with bananas using #weareallmonkeys and #saynotoracism to protest the racist incident. Police apprehended the suspected banana-thrower, identified as 26-year-old David Campaya Lleo, BBC reported.

It was a feel-good Twitter moment — until Spanish news reported that Alves, his teammate Neymar, the marketing firm Loducca, and Brazilian marketers Meio e Mensagen had orchestrated the whole affair. Loducca started planning the campaign after Alves and Neymar, who is also Brazilian, were racially abused during a game in March, Spain's AS sports newspaper reported.

Guga Ketzer, a Loducca partner, told AS News, "Actions speak louder than words," Metro news reported. Ketzer continued: "A gesture needs no translation and what we're seeing is that this has gone viral, globally. The idea was for Neymar to eat the banana, but in the end it was Alves, and that works just the same... We created #somostodosmacacos and #weareallmonkeys, with the gesture of eating a banana, and it has been turned into a movement."

SuitSat-1: A Spacesuit Floats Free

Philip.paulsson

Neat!
"A spacesuit floated away from the International Space Station eight years ago, but no investigation was conducted. Everyone knew that it was pushed by the space station crew. Dubbed Suitsat-1, the unneeded Russian Orlan spacesuit filled mostly with old clothes was fitted with a faint radio transmitter and released to orbit the Earth. The suit circled the Earth twice before its radio signal became unexpectedly weak. Suitsat-1 continued to orbit every 90 minutes until it burned up in the Earth's atmosphere after a few weeks. Pictured above, the lifeless spacesuit was photographed in 2006 just as it drifted away from space station."

Netflix researching “large-scale peer-to-peer technology” for streaming

by Jon Brodkin
Philip.paulsson

One way around the death of net-neutrality, but not a long-term solution I fear.

When we wrote about the possibility of Netflix using a peer-to-peer architecture for streaming earlier today, it seemed like more of a thought experiment than a real possibility.

But it turns out Netflix is looking for an engineer to research this very type of system. By searching Netflix job postings we found an opening for a senior software engineer who would work on Netflix's Open Connect content delivery network while researching how P2P technology could be used for streaming.

"Netflix seeks a seasoned Senior Software Engineer with a special focus in peer-to-peer networks," the listing says. Responsibilities include:
