China Accused Of Cover-Up After Drunken Soldiers Allegedly Beat Students And Teacher

Philip.paulsson

The Chinese military is nothing if not efficient. 42 students and a head teacher beat down, and not a scratch on the military folks!

42 students and a head teacher were allegedly beaten up in Hunan when an army demonstration became violently chaotic. School attendees and social media have accused authorities of a cover-up.

It ended with the hospitalisation of 42 students and their head teacher. According to Beijing News, a brawl broke out between the military staff and students during an activity day held by soldiers.

"More than 20 [military] instructors rushed to start beating the boys, while some girls were frightened to tears," an anonymous student was quoted as saying. "Some boys were bleeding, so the head teacher took out his cell phone to call an ambulance. The instructor asked other instructors, 'Beat him, or no?' One replied, 'Let's beat him'. After that, a group of people rushed to beat the head teacher."

pic.yesky.com

Things got slightly hairy when male students became annoyed by a soldier who was flirting with a female student called Tian. Events escalated a few hours later, with the battle resulting in some students suffering broken bones.

After the fracas police arrived and 42 students were sent to hospital for treatment along with the head teacher, Liu Yunjie, and an army instructor, Chinese state media confirmed. Photos, allegedly of the injured students (who were wearing army-style clothes), circulated on social media.

A newbie’s guide to why so many people are watching Twitch

by Kyle Orland
Philip.paulsson

@Lindsay

When I talk to people who don't follow gaming closely about the phenomenon that is Twitch, the response I get is usually along the lines of "Why do people spend so much time watching other people play a game they could just as easily play themselves?"

"Why do so many people watch the NFL when they could just as easily play a game of football in their yard?" I reply.

The analogy isn't perfect—you need good weather, a group of friends, a field, and decent physical fitness to play football, after all—but the basic relationship is the same. Twitch has become a phenomenon because watching the best players in the world is often more entertaining than participating as a relative novice.

Cleaner air helps pay for reducing carbon emissions

by Scott K. Johnson
Philip.paulsson

Interesting read if you have some time. Cost-benefit analysis on climate change and health benefits.

It has been a long time since we could reasonably ask whether something should be done about climate change. The much more interesting (and challenging) discussion revolves around the nitty-gritty of how best to do something about the problem. There are many conceivable possibilities, but some will be more expensive, and some will be less effective—there are plenty of variables to consider when plotting the best and wisest path forward.

The most obvious questions to ask about any policy proposal are how much it will cost to implement and how much harm it will help us avoid. But it’s also worthwhile to consider whether the policy might have any positive (or negative) side effects separate from the climate impacts.

We know, for example, that greenhouse gases aren’t the only by-products of burning fossil fuels—there are other types of pollutants as well. Those pollutants have environmental and human health impacts that would be reduced right along with the greenhouse gas emissions if fossil fuel use were to decline.

9-Year-Old Girl Accidently Shoots, Kills Gun Instructor With Uzi

Philip.paulsson

I don't feel at all bad for that dude. Don't teach 9-yr olds how to shoot Uzis! I didn't think we had to make that a rule.

I do feel bad for the little girl though, having to go through the rest of her life knowing she shot someone in the head. That's gotta mess you up at 9yrs old.

Charles Vacca, 39, died at a hospital after he was shot in the head in an accident at a firing range in White Hills, Ariz. He was showing a 9-year-old girl how to fire an Uzi submachine gun, authorities said.

Sergey Mironov / Thinkstock

A 39-year-old firing range instructor died Monday night at a hospital after he was accidentally shot in the head by a 9-year-old girl, authorities said.

Charles Vacca of Lake Havasu City was an instructor at a firing range in White Hills, Ariz., about 60 miles from Las Vegas. According to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, he was accidentally shot in the head around 10 a.m.

Vacca had been showing a 9-year-old girl how to fire an automatic Uzi when the accident happened, officials said. The girl pulled the trigger, and the gun's recoil sent it over her head. Vacca was standing next to her when he was shot.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas, where he died around 9 p.m., officials said.

The girl's parents were with her at the time of the shooting, officials said. According to the Burgers and Bullets website, which organizes tours from Las Vegas to the range, 8 is the minimum age. The location advertises machine guns, military-style bunkers and specialty weapons.

A call to the firing range's owner was not immediately returned.

The Mohave County Sheriff's office released this video of Vacca and the 9-year-old girl at the shooting range moments before the fatal accident.

The Spectre of Veszprem

The Spectre of Veszprem The city of Veszprem, Hungary was only briefly haunted by this mysterious spectre. On the morning of August 11, its monstrous form hovered in the mist above municipal buildings near the town center. A clue to its true identity is offered by the photographer, though, who reports he took the picture from the top of a twenty story building with the rising Sun directly at his back. That special geometry suggests this is an example of an atmospheric phenomenon called the Glory or sometimes "the Spectre of the Brocken". Also seen from mountain tops and airplanes when looking opposite the Sun, the dramatic apparition is the observer's shadow on clouds or fog, the small droplets of water scattering light back towards the Sun through complex internal reflections. Careful night sky watchers can also encounter this spectre's analog in astronomy, a brightening of zodiacal light opposite the Sun known as the gegenschein.

Abortion Opponents Urge Social Conservatives To Drop The Ice Bucket Challenge

Philip.paulsson

This kinda makes me want to do it now.

Lila Rose warns Republicans dumping a bucket of ice on their heads supports “a culture of death” — by supporting stem-cell research.

Jay Janner/Austin American-Statesman / MCT

WASHINGTON — Anti-abortion activist Lila Rose is warning Republicans that their support for the Ice Bucket Challenge drives support for embryonic stem-cell research, which she says contributes to the "culture of death" surrounding legalized abortion thanks to the ALS Association projects that include embryonic stem cell research.

"It hurts the pro-life cause, which calls for a consistent, cohesive ethic on the dignity of ALL human life, when pro-life politicians take part in gimmicks or events, however well-intended, that contribute directly and unapologetically to the culture of death," Rose told BuzzFeed Thursday when asked what message she has for anti-abortion politicians who do the Ice Bucket Challenge.

"Abortion advocates often accuse us of elevating the fetus's rights above the mother's. But the truth is that we want equal rights for all — including between the innocent pre-born and those with ALS," she added. "Consistency in this is literally a matter of life and death."

ALS ice bucket challenges have been posted to YouTube by many socially conservative politicians, including former President George W. Bush, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, North Carolina Reps. Renee Ellmers and Mark Meadows, Alabama Rep. Martha Roby. The program has raised millions for ALS-related charities, most notably the ALS Association.

Meanwhile, a debate has raged in anti-abortion circles over the challenge. The American Life League lists the Association as a charity "not worthy of support from pro-lifers." Multiple stories on LifeNews.com have been devoted to ALS Association stem cell research. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has tried to thread the needle between support for the viral sensation — and those with ALS — by allowing the challenge at the schools it runs but forbidding money raised from going to the ALS Foundation.

Rose and other anti-abortion leaders aren't opposed to ALS research or donating money to the cause of curing the disease. But ice bucketing is closely associated with the ALS Association, which Rose and others are warning people away from. Some abortion opponents are suggesting their own ALS Association-free ice bucketing.

Rose suggested a list of charities Republican politicians can support with their ice bucket funds, including the John Paul II Medical Research Institute. That pitch appears to be working: Time reports the John Paul charity "has received dozens of donations per hour in recent days" where it usually "only receives a couple donations each day."

An anti-abortion activist known in the community for her undercover videos from inside Planned Parenthood clinics that have made her a social conservative sensation.

For now, Rose appears to be among the few anti-abortion leaders willing to take on the wildly popular ice bucket challenge. The anti-abortion community is usually not one to shy away from the spotlight, but when it comes to the viral fundraising sensation, the community is uncharacteristically quiet despite the internal debate. A spokesperson at National Right To Life did not make anyone available for comment, and none of the Republican politicians BuzzFeed reached spoke on the record.

For its part, an ALS Association spokesperson says it has systems in place to deal with sensitivities around stem cell research.

"The ALS Association primarily funds adult stem cell research. Currently, The Association is funding one study using embryonic stem cells (ESC), and the stem cell line was established many years ago under ethical guidelines set by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS); this research is funded by one specific donor, who is committed to this area of research," an Association spokesperson said in a statement. "In fact, donors may stipulate that their funds not be invested in this study or any stem cell project. Under very strict guidelines, The Association may fund embryonic stem cell research in the future."

This Is What Happens To Your Heart When You Dive Into The Sea

Philip.paulsson

I kinda want to do this. Though this guy seems like kind of a flake.

James Nestor , author of DEEP: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves , takes us on a transformative journey into the ocean.

Jenny Chang / BuzzFeed

The next time you're at the beach your body will undergo the most profound transformation you can naturally experience. This is not a psychic prophecy; I don't have precognition. The transformation I am describing will be physical, and it will be real. It's the result of millions of years of human evolution, a trigger of ancient genes which you and all other humans share with billions of other deep-diving animals.

It looks something like this: You will be lying on the sand. Your skin will be warmed by the sun. You will become hot and thirst for a swim in the ocean. You will pick yourself up and stroll to the water's edge, wade calmly into the lapping waves, and jump in. The moment your face submerges in the sea's salty waters, a Hulk-like metamorphosis will trigger. Blood will begin rushing from your hands and feet, up your legs and arms, and into your core; your heart rate will reflexively lower 25 percent its normal rate; your mind will enter a meditative, almost dreamlike-state. If you choose to dive deeper, the transformation will grow more profound until you bare only a passing resemblance to your terrestrial form. You will become a water animal; a fish, essentially.

Scientists call this transformation the mammalian dive reflex or, more lyrically, the Master Switch of Life. They've been researching it for the past fifty years.

The term Master Switch of Life describes not one but many switches, or reflexes, that are spurred when we enter the water. These reflexes affect the brain, lungs, and heart, among other organs, they work in concert with other triggers in the body to protect us from the immense underwater pressure of deep water and turn us into efficient deep-sea-diving animals. The equivalent pressures of such a deep dive on land would kill or injure us, but not in the ocean. The ocean has different rules, and often requires a completely different mindset to truly comprehend.

He is quoted in The Sun as saying: “The teacher says other kids are scared of my hands.

His father, Shamim, claimed the school had told him it would not be responsible if other children mocked or bulled Kaleem.

Guy Loses Fantasy League, Has To Make Embarrassing Photo Calendar

Philip.paulsson

Are we doing any wagers for our rss league?

This is a pretty great way to punish the person who comes in last in your fantasy league. Instead of merely living with shame in the abstract, make it tangible (and practical!) with a calendar full of embarrassing photoshops, like naked Prince Fielder.

Reader Jon touched base to let us know his buddy Henry lost their league and this is how they roll. Here he is channeling the animalistic sexuality of George Costanza:

Paying homage to Brandi Chastain and the USWNT:

Breastfeeding on the cover of Time gets even more disturbing:

Janet Jackson and the mother of wardrobe malfunctions:

And so many more. Seven more, to be precise, since this is a calendar. You can check them all out on his Instagram page. It's good clean fun and allows for a lot of creativity, not just in making the calendar after the season, but even choosing which photos to use. Maybe the league can pick which ones they want to use heading into the season as an incentive to not be terrible. Or, maybe you want to wait to see who loses and then pick ones specifically designed for the loser. The latter is the way to go; that Prince Fielder one is damn near perfect.
