lapitiedangereuse:

This was Marlene Dietrich’s first trip to America, just shortly after the Berlin premiere of “The Blue Angel”. Joseph von Sternberg had invited her to Hollywood where he would transform her into the svelte, glamorous film star she later became.

Rustic Normandy cider a fine salute to D-Day

by By Kerry J. Byrne
Russian Sledges

'“They are funkier, earthier and more food-friendly than English ciders,” said Ted Gallagher, bar manager at Steel & Rye in Milton. He stocks Domaine Dupont cider from Normandy’s Pays d’Auge, the heart of apple-orchard country. [...] Gallagher mixes a calvados cocktail called The Lion Heart. It’s a Norman-
flavored old-fashioned.'

World leaders, American tourists and even a few remaining World War II veterans descend on Normandy, France, today for the 70th anniversary of
D-Day, the Allied invasion of Europe that marked the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany.

Pop the cork on a bottle of Norman farmhouse cider to honor the occasion.

It’s one of the world’s great culinary specialties and a staple of this rural, haunting region of northwestern France. It’s what GIs swigged from dusty bottles in those old photos of World War II.

The SciFi Story Robert H. Goddard Published 100 Years Ago

In 1904, while Robert H. Goddard was a student at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, his professor of creative writing asked his class to write a theme on the subject of what travel might be like in 1950. Goddard imagined what it might be like to travel in a mag lev train that shot at high speed through an airless tunnel.

Vaccine Refusal Has Helped Drive U.S. Measles Cases To A 20-Year High

by Robert T. Gonzalez
Russian Sledges

retroactively justifying my avoidance of distant filipino relatives in the bay area:

'To travel, unvaccinated, to a place like the Philippines – where a large measles outbreak has been ongoing since October 2013, and many of 2014's U.S. cases are thought to have originated – is to gamble not only with your own health, but that of your community back home.'

Vaccine Refusal Has Helped Drive U.S. Measles Cases To A 20-Year High

It's only May, and already America has seen 288 cases of measles. That's the highest number of reported cases since the disease was officially eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, and the highest number reported in the first five months of a year since 1994. Why the resurgence? Unvaccinated U.S. residents.

Anti-homeless studs at London residential block prompts uproar

by Staff and agencies
Critics say spikes treat homeless 'like pigeons' as residents fear short ground spikes at doorway are to deter rough sleepers

Metal studs have been installed outside a block of flats in central London to deter rough sleepers.

The installation of the studs outside the flats on Southwark Bridge Road provoked widespread condemnation on Twitter with users claiming homeless people were being treated like vermin because similar metal spikes are used to deter pigeons.

Friday Video: A 17th c. Automated Drinking Game

by Isabella Bradford/Susan Holloway Scott
Russian Sledges

yesssssss

Isabella reporting,

Blog readers know by now that Loretta and I have serious fascinations with automatons of the past - those gorgeously crafted wind-ups of precious metals and amazing ingenuity. We've shown you a silver swan, eye-rolling elephants, a harpsichord player that belonged to Marie-Antoinette, and even a wriggling, jewel-studded caterpillar. The automaton shown here was not only a beautiful object, but also provided dining table entertainment for its aristocratic owners. Think of it as an automated, gilded hybrid of spin-the-bottle and a drinking game.

This automaton features a golden Diana, goddess of the hunt, riding a stag. Made of cast and chased silver, partially gilded and painted with translucent lacquers, the piece was created in the early 17th c. by the German goldsmith Joachim Fries, and is called a "trinkspiel," or drinking game. Currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, it's a rare survivor with a fascinating story that was recently described here on the web site of WBUR, Boston's public radio station. There are many more pictures on the site as well, plus directions for playing that drinking game. Cheers!

Thanks to Andrea Shea, Arts & Culture reporter for WBUR, for sharing this story & video with us via Twitter.

In response to Ruth Graham’s article at Slate, “Against YA“, but REALLY in response to the sudden eruption of hand-wringing defenses of why it’s okay to read Young Adult books. 1.  I am in a bookstore and I see a book in the Young Adult section that I think about buying. Another customer looks at me […]

Coca-Cola Advertisements in Nazi Germany in the 1930s

by John VE

Carnibore: 'The first one is most definitely a fake. "Getränk" is misspelled and that saying wasn't used at that point in time... '

Coca-Cola was one of the three official beverage sponsors with a Getraenkedienst (beverage service) at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Athletic competition was a Nazi ideal and the Coca-Cola GmbH cashed in heavily on this infatuation by becoming one of the biggest sponsors of sports events, most notably the annual Deutschlandrundfahrt (National Bycicle Championships) and the Soccer Cup.

i love sir patrick stewart more with each passing day.

See, guys. This is how you do it. Notice the words “Not all men are like that” are never spoken.

He knows men are like that

his father was like that to his mother

he has experienced the pain firsthand, of what it’s like when men are like that

and he never wants men to be like that again and he fights tooth and nail against the men who are still like that

And moreover, he acknowledges his privilege [as an older white male who is famous/well known] and uses it to speak up. He knows what he is, and he never has to say he’s not like those men he fights against—he never says it, his actions speak loud enough for everyone else to see it.

Sir Patrick Stewart, everyone.
