Who's who in Syria's battlefield

by Economist.com

A guide to the key rebel forces in Syria

AS THE civil war in Syria has dragged on, the rebels have become more Islamist and extreme. For Western governments pondering whether to arm them, Jabhat al-Nusra (Victory Front) is the biggest worry. Its global jihadist ideology justifies violence to bring about a nation where all Muslims unite. It enjoys murky sources of private funding, including regular payments from al-Qaeda in Iraq. Ahrar al-Sham has more local aims, but its comrades are also vehemently Islamist. Other umbrella groups, such as Liwa al-Tawhid in Aleppo, Syria’s embattled second city, are harder to classify, in part because they serve as franchises or bring together smaller groups with a range of ideas. The Farouq Battalions, whose territorial reach goes from Homs to Hasaka in the north-east, is another mixed bag, ranging from Islamists to people with no particular ideology. The Supreme Military Command, led by General Salim Idriss, a Sunni defector from President Assad’s army, includes some able commanders but still lacks the cash and arms to match either the regime’s forces or Jabhat al-Nusra, which ignores the military command. Ominously, rebels from more secular-minded or more moderately Islamist groups speak openly of a second war to come—against Jabhat al-Nusra. See full article.

No Apology

by drew

noapology-mittromney

Whatever your political inclination, it’s always funny to check up on pre-election cash-in books by presidential candidates of the past. “No Apology”, Mitt Romney’s paean-to-himself, checks in at $3.21 for the hardcover.

The John Kerry title “Call To Service” is available for as little as $0.01.

But my favorite failed-president book is Bob Dole: A Pictorial History Of A Kansan. The publishers were like “Fuck the words, you don’t read words. We got pictures. Bob Dole.”

People being angry about ~dem gays~ on Target’s Facebook.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

This rules.

This is really good to hear.

"As a first step in the process, Dr. Robertson stated that she should stop dwelling on the cheating...."

“As a first step in the process, Dr. Robertson stated that she should stop dwelling on the cheating. Next, he recommended that she remind herself of all the reasons she fell in love with him in the first place so that she might try to fall back in love with him all over again. Lastly, his point was that everyone is human and there is much temptation outside of the home, so she should do whatever she can to strengthen their home and relationship. His intent was not to condone infidelity or to cast blame. We regret any misunderstanding.”

Modesty and Big Boobs: "We have a great selection of minimizers!"

Russian Sledges

#tits

via rosalind

thatbradoesnotfither:

This post is part of The Modesty Panel, a series that myself and a handful of other bloggers are involved in this week that discusses the issue of modesty from many various perspectives. Be sure to read some of the other bloggers’ posts (as they appear during the week), because they are all fantastic! Here are the other participants (bolded if they’ve already posted theirs):

Boosaurus     BralessinBrasil     BrasandBodyImage     ByBabysRules     ContraryKiwi     FussyBusty     MissUnderpinnings     SophiaJenner    SophisticatedPair      Hourglassy     ThinandCurvy      Undiegamer     RedHairandGirlyFlair    WeirdlyShapedandWellPhotographed

One of the biggest reasons I decided to become an advocate for proper bra fit can be perfectly symbolized by one article of clothing: the Minimizer bra.

image

“Oh, goodness,” the fitter exclaims as she finishes measuring you, “it looks like you might need a DD cup!” (Replace “DD” with any bra size above D.) This isn’t new information to you, but the fitter is shocked to be dealing with “such large boobs.” The fitter then makes the assumption that we all dread: “That’s okay, we have a great selection of minimizers! I’ll go grab you some.” And suddenly, without your consent, your wonderful boobs have been reduced to problematic eyesores that need to be covered, contained, flattened, and hidden in the name of “modesty.”

Hello,

This is (representative’s name) from Etsy’s Marketplace Integrity Team. Thank you for your interest in selling on Etsy.

Unfortunately, some of the items listed in your shop do not appear to qualify for the Etsy marketplace. We are a venue for independent artists to sell their own handmade goods as well as Vintage items and Craft Supplies.

As your items do not appear to meet the criteria to sell on Etsy, your shop has been suspended.

Here is some information about what can be sold on Etsy:

Items Handmade by You:

Artists and crafters can sell items they have made. Some production assistance is allowed, but the person running the shop needs to have a large part in creating the items for sale.

Vintage Goods:

These must be at least 20 years old. “Vintage style” or “vintage inspired” items less than 20 years old cannot be sold in the Vintage category.

Crafting Supplies:

These are items intended for crafting. This category is for raw materials and tools that may be used to create things sold on Etsy. “Ready to use” items do not qualify as Craft Supplies.

Do not open other Etsy accounts. They will be closed immediately and without notice. Your other Etsy accounts may be suspended as well.

Let us know if you have any questions about this.

Best,
Etsy Marketplace Integrity

One.

2. Write the name of each person and their role in the shop. This includes making things, creating listings, running the shop, and shipping items.

Brendan Byrne - Design, fabrication, assembly, administrator, and everything else.

3. Do you outsource any aspect of production of your handmade items? If so, what part(s)?

I outsource the circuit-boards. They’re printed in China. The chemicals involved in the production of them are not suitable for homes.

Step 2 - Information about a specific item in your shop

4. In detail, please outline the steps used to make this item. Include as much information as possible.

The wood panels and acrylic front and bottom panels were cut using a 75 watt laser cutter that I have at my disposal. I designed the enclosure in Adobe Illustrator. The PCB was sourced from Music from Outer Space, an online synth hobbyist store. The owner, Ray Wilson, explicitly gives permission for the resale of his boards in finished projects. I adhere to his policies.
The knobs, potentiometers, and jacks were all secured by me. I did all of the wiring as well. Ordered the parts and soldered them all to the board too. Easily a day’s work to assemble not including the time to design it.

Step 3 - Attach images

In all of the images, please include a piece of paper showing:
• your username
• the date
This will show us that the images are current and taken by you.

Attach images of:

• Raw materials used to make the item in Step 2
• Step-by-step images of your handmade process in Step 2

I didn’t take documentation during the build process, but this is a very similar item that I used the same techniques on.

I don’t have photos of me building the item from start to finish. I checked Etsy’s “Do’s and Don’ts” page and nowhere does it even suggest that sellers be required to supply photos of the build process.

I’ve supplied photos of a device that I’ve documented the construction of that is nearly identical to this item. It’s linked to my Flickr site and to my Gmail which are direct representations of my craftmanship and practice. I’m wondering what the problem is? And why if the problem is so focused on this one particular item my entire store was suspended without warning. It should be obvious these devices were made by me and no one else. Where else could it have come from?!

I know electronic devices are an offshoot of what Etsy does and I’m always amazed by what items pop up there. However, I can’t help but doubt how well you or your staff is versed in the production of these devices, which I completely understand and don’t fault you for.

The photos I’ve supplied should be evidence enough to anyone that I’ve built this device.

If at all possible, I’d like to discuss this over phone. Are you able to schedule a time to speak with me tomorrow?

I’m currently putting together a large batch of devices that I’m planning to sell through Etsy and need my page functional. This downtime is incredibly embarrassing. I usually pick up 1-2 followers daily and depend on them as my base market for my next products.

Brendan,

We appreciate your cooperation with this process.  This is a standard questionnaire used to learn more about items on Etsy and ensure they comply with our policies.  We reach out to many sellers to ask for this information.  Unfortunately, we’re not equipped to offer phone support at this time.

As you’ve indicated you’re currently working on some devices for your shop, if you could take photos of that process and provide them, we can review them for compliance with our policies and revisit your account status.  Thanks.

I’d appreciate a link to the section on your website that states sellers are expected to document their build process and can be asked to supply those photos on demand by Etsy staff.

I’ve done nothing wrong and have cooperated by showing photos of my workshop, the item in question which was obviously assembled by my own hand, and my technical process for constructing an almost identical device already. I consider this to be MORE than enough evidence to settle the question of who built it. I find your further insistence for evidence completely unnecessary and insulting.

When I look over Etsy and see cases of rampant copyright infringement and “prints” that were generated using Photoshop filters and standard copiers I can’t help but feel persecuted for the nature of my items. Do you ask those sellers for photos of the work coming out of the printer? Or images of them adjusting levels in photoshop?

At this point, I’m going to ask for access to my account and an apology or I’ll take my business elsewhere.

The information you provided in your response did not adequately demonstrate your Handmade process. Based on what you submitted, we are unable to approve your shop to sell on Etsy at this time.

If you would like to submit additional information that clearly demonstrates how your items are made, we will review it. However, we cannot reconsider your account status or respond further until we receive information sufficient to confirm that your items meet our policies. Thank you.

Teapot with tie to Lizzie Borden donated

by By Associated Press

FALL RIVER — The Fall River Historical Society has been given an antique teapot with a direct tie to Lizzie Borden.

Curator Michael Martins says the tiny teapot was a present from Borden to her hired companion, Gertrude May Russell.

The teapot was donated by Russell's granddaughter, a member of the society who lives in Maine and wants to remain anonymous. The teapot, at least a century old, came complete with an intact ceramic infuser.

The Post-Apocalyptic Google Reader World

rstevens:

So! I asked where Google Reader fans were going to migrate to after its untimely demise. There seem to be four main camps. I’m also going to be publishing this publicly, so don’t be alarmed if you see it elsewhere.

1.) Sadness.

It’ll be OK. At least there’s new Daft Punk and Arrested Development this month.

2.) Once Bitten, Twice Marked All As Read

Some folks are going back to a desktop RSS reader, like lovers once spurned who need to learn to trust again. Vienna and NetNewsWire are the most popular options here. I personally use Vienna as my secondary reader to check my own feed. It’s very free and very good.

3.) Fuck It, We’ll Do It LIVE

Another interesting minority are the people who are opting to run their own cloud-y RSS service. Tiny Tiny RSS is the winner here, with a few folks choosing to host their own Newsblur. (An open source but also hosted service.)

4.) I Have a Type and I Date My Type

The majority of people who replied are moving to a new hosted RSS reader service. Feedly and The Old Reader seem to be the most popular of them. Netvibes is a strong third, which I attribute to the other two being new and shiny. Only a couple people mentioned Feeder.co, but I’m including it because the website is so darn nice.

******

+ What am I Doing?

I’m going to try Feedly and The Old Reader, but I’m holding off on a decision until there is a clear path forward for Reeder. I’m a sucker for Reeder and use all three versions- iPhone, iPad and Mac desktop. It looks like it will at least tie into Feedbin, so that’s very much on my radar as well.

Reeder *makes* RSS for me in a way that other apps never did. I’m not a big web app person, though I do value cloud-based syncing services. Feedly looks wonderful, but I am put off by apps that default to sexy magazine-style interfaces. That’s just me.

******

+ Webcomic friendly?

If you or someone you know represents any RSS service and would like to tell me how awesome your company is for reading comics, I am all ears! I talk to a lot of other webcartoonists and would love to spread the word.

Do you work on a “webcomics reader app”? I’ll be honest, you’re going to be starting off at a disadvantage if you write me. I have a strong bias towards full-fledged RSS apps and services. I think internet comics are better served being part of the entire world, not a self-segregated corner of it.

If you can’t comment where you’re reading this, the best emails to reach me at are dieselsweeties@mac.com and rstevens3@gmail.com

******

If you found this article helpful, please feel free to publish it with a link to the Diesel Sweeties site and my twitter.

I run a full-feed, ad-free-except-for-my-own-stuff, personally written and curated RSS feed of my comics here. I publish my RSS using a clever Mac app called Feeder.

I do not for the life of me understand why more webcomics do not run a full RSS feed. (Boo hoo, you lose some banner impressions while keeping more savvy readers around longer. BOO HOO.)

This is important to me as well.

The Morningside Mysterium

by Alex Ross
Russian Sledges

'Cosima Wagner, his second wife, wrote in her diary in 1880: “Again and again he keeps coming back to America, says it is the only place on the whole map which he can gaze upon with any pleasure: ‘What the Greeks were among the peoples of this earth, this continent is among its countries.’” In consultation with Newell Jenkins, an American dentist who had become a family friend, Wagner drew up a plan whereby American supporters would raise a million dollars to resettle the composer and his family in a “favorable climate”; in return, America would receive proceeds from “Parsifal,” his opera-in-progress, and all other future work. “Thus would America have bought me from Europe for all time,” Wagner wrote. The pleasant climate he had in mind was, surprisingly, Minnesota.'

You Absolutely Should Not Get Backyard Chickens

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy
Russian Sledges

oh my god don't get a chicken if you think their lives are precious

I was talking to a friend the other day. She’s a gentle soul, a kind-hearted person who says, “I could never kill an animal” with wide, pained eyes that let you know she’s not talking in hyperbole.

She wants chickens. She wants them bad. She wants the experience of fluffy little chicks and she wants hens to weed for her and she wants her daughter to have that mini-backyard-petting-zoo experience.

She has, up until now, not given into her chicken-keeping desires. For this I am so proud of her.

You see, there’s a reality to chicken keeping that doesn’t show up when you are scanning Pinterest for gorgeous coops. (I maintain a Pinterest board of chicken keeping and coop inspiration, by the way, if you are into that kind of thing.)

A continuous supply of plentiful eggs requires a continuous supply of hens at laying age. For us non-commercial chicken-keepers, a good rule of thumb is that hens will lay pretty consistently (with periods off for molting, reduced day length and broodiness) from about 6 months old until about 3 years old. Although you will hear a lot of anecdotes about individual hens that keep pumping out eggs until they are 5 or 6 years old, the general consensus is that three years old is usually the beginning of the end for consistent egg laying.

Call it Henopause.

Chicken(Wide)

“Woh. Was That A Hot Flash?!”

A well-kept backyard hen, protected from hawks, raccoons and Fido, can easily live to be 8 or 10 years old, and ages of twice that are not unheard of.

Bear with me here as I do some Urban Homesteader math. One layer hen eats about 1.5 pounds of layer feed per week. (Pastured birds will eat less purchased feed – yet another good reason to buy this book and study it before you design your coop and run.)

If a chicken starts laying at 6 months old (this is a bit later than average but it makes my numbers easy) and has essentially stopped laying by 4 years old, and lives naturally to be 8, a backyard chicken keeper is looking at 3.5 years of egg production time, and 4.5 years of Pets Without Benefits time. That’d be 351 pounds of feed going to a hen that isn’t making eggs!

Current, local prices for the layer rations I feed my hens is $28 per 40 pound bag, or $.70 a pound. Admittedly, this is a bit spendy, but I get the locally produced, happy-hippie, GMO-free feed from the lovely folks at Scratch & Peck. At those prices, it costs $245.70 to maintain a hen into theoretical old age and natural demise while you aren’t getting any eggs.

Which means those half-dozen cute peeping balls of fluff you take home from the feed store in spring could cost you $1474 during the time when they are not giving you eggs. And of course I’m not including the cost of bedding, a fractional share of the coop, potential vet bills, etc.

Meanwhile, if you live in a city or suburb, you have an even bigger problem: your now non-laying hens are taking up your legal urban chicken quota which could be filled with younger, laying hens, and you are stuck. You can’t just keep adding to your flock indefinitely when you live on 1/12th of an acre in Seattle. So now you are a Backyard Chicken Keeper without any Backyard Eggs.

If your hens are pure pets, this is all totally fine. These are very reasonable amounts of money to spend on a pet, and if you are not resentful in the least at having to buy both chicken feed and grocery store or farmer’s market eggs, then Chickens As Pets is a wonderful path to take.

There is another option, of course. This is the option you won’t tend to run into on Pinterest. It’s not the solution of a soft heart so much as a calculating head.

You can make the decision to cull your birds when they are past prime lay. This is what all commercial egg operations do, and what “real” (as opposed to “urban”) farmers do, and what everyone who makes a living and not just a hobby from animal husbandry does.

Culled laying hens aren’t good for roasting or frying but they make unbeatable stock and stewing birds.

So basically those are your two choices: you continue to pay and care for chickens that barely give you eggs or you cowboy up and you deal with the slaughter of no longer profitable hens.

Back to my friend who really, really wants chickens.

Could she kill her chickens?

Oh no. Absolutely not.

We both agree, she doesn’t have that in her. Fine, I’ve no problem with that, and I’m glad she knows herself.

Does she want to pay for chickens even if she gets no eggs?

Well, not really.

Fine, I wouldn’t either – I totally understand.

I told her quite bluntly (as is my way) that she should not get chickens.

Can I give them to a chicken sanctuary when they get too old to lay? Some place that has a no kill policy?

No. No. You cannot do that.

She can’t, and no one reading this can. You know why? Personal responsibility. Your chickens, your adoption, your decision, your responsibility to see it through to the end. You do not get to embrace the idea of a more intimate relationship with your food chain and then make that food chain – the food chain you specifically set up – someone else’s problem when shit gets real.

There is a local urban farming message board that is filled – filled – with people trying to give away their three year old chicken to a “good home.”  Are you kidding me? You own the chicken. Your home is a good home. And once it’s not, your soup pot is a good soup pot. I once joked to a good friend that I could stock my freezer for the entire year off no-longer-laying hens being given away free “to a good home.”

This pisses me off, as you can probably tell. There is absolutely nothing ethically superior – and quite a bit that is ethically dubious, if you ask me – about enjoying the benefits of a young laying hen and then turning over the care or slaughter of that hen to someone else once it stops laying.

That is not how animal husbandry works and it’s not how pet ownership works, and those are your two choices. I don’t care which path you take with your chickens, but pick one. Playing Little Suzy Farm Girl until it’s time to get the axe and then deciding you aren’t up for chicken ownership just doesn’t fly with me.

Normally I am a Rah-Rah Cheerleader for this quirky way of life, and I think any fair assessment would deem me particularly encouraging to beginners. But a chicken is not a seed packet, it’s an animal and a responsibility. If you can’t cull your own birds or can’t provide for them all the way into their Chicken Social Security, then please, do not get chickens.

MassDOT recommends grounding McGrath

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

This meeting was SO BORING you guys.

At a public meeting, MassDOT released some opinions on the McGrath Highway.

MassDOT has recommended that the McCarthy Overpass portion of McGrath Highway be grounded and the roadway developed into a Boulevard that reconnects East Somerville, Union Square and Brickbottom.

The recommended plan preserves continuity at Washington Street, while enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connections. The removal of the overpass will allow for wider sidewalks, bicycle paths, added green space that will help spur redevelopment and enhance existing uses along the corridor.

Now, if only we can figure out why there is an extensive McGrath rehab in progress when MassDOT intends to remove it.

BAA: "Finish what you started"

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

Good.

The BAA is inviting 5,633 runners who were unable to cross the finish line at this year's marathon back to run in the 2014 Boston Marathon next year.

In a press release today, they listed the eligibility as having at least crossed the half-marathon checkpoint when the race was stopped at 2:50 PM. They do not yet know what the total size of next year's field will be set at, but those invited back will be given the chance to be a part of that field automatically by using a non-transferable unique code that will be given out in August.

Those affected by this decision should already have received an e-mail letting them know that they were included.

Google on Glass privacy: 'If I'm recording you, I have to stare at you'

by Nathan Olivarez-Giles

The team behind Google Glass defended its creation against against privacy worries in a Google I/O fireside chat with developers on Thursday. When asked what the privacy implications of Glass' head-mounted display and camera are, Steve Lee, Glass' product director, said the device was built to alleviate these concerns before it even shipped.

"Privacy was top of mind as we designed the product," Lee said, adding that he's proud of the way his team has designed Glass. Early prototypes covered a user's eyes rather than placing the display above the eye. But Google discovered quickly how important eye contact is to Glass, he said. "You'll know when someone with Glass is paying attention to you," Lee said. "If you're looking at Glass, you're looking up."

"If you walk into a restroom and someone's just looking at you — I don't know about you but I'm getting the hell out of there."

The built-in camera raises its own, unique set of privacy questions, the Glass team acknowledged. "If I'm recording you, I have to stare at you — as a human being. And when someone is staring at you, you have to notice," said Charles Mendis, an engineer on the Glass team. "If you walk into a restroom and someone's just looking at you — I don't know about you but I'm getting the hell out of there."

While Lee and Mendis were adamant in their stance that there will be no question when someone is snapping a photo or shooting video with Glass, the fact is that you can use on the headset without looking at someone. Your eyes can be pointed away, or even closed, if that's what you want to do. Still, Lee said that new social behaviors are arising as Glass is starting to get out into the world. "That's why taking a picture has clear social cues — raise your hand or speak to Glass," he said, adding that these are very clear signals to those around you that you're doing something with Glass. Lee also noted that whenever Glass' display is active, it lights up, not just for the user to see, but for observers as well. "Our design is to ensure the display is active when Glass is active," he said. "That will be part of our GDK and part of our policy, so apps won't be permitted that don't do that."

Developers have asked how secure Glass will be with photos, videos and other user data. The Glass Explorer Edition is currently easily hackable, to toy around with and load up experimental apps. So much so that in earlier sessions, some developers mentioned that they weren't wearing their headsets to I/O over security fears. Lee said that the device won't easily expose user data. "We take the trust and reliability of our software very seriously, so by design that's not intended," Lee said of hacking Glass.
