Comedian Gets Kids to Play Evil 'Drug Deal Prank' on Their Parents

by Neetzan Zimmerman

Between this rave review of Nathan For You and his recent attempt to strap himself to a flying plane, Canadian comedian Nathan Fielder is fast becoming someone you should know.

Or at least follow on Twitter.

It was there that Fielder set off a chain reaction that resulted in what was most likely the single largest collective headache ever experienced by American parents.

"Experiment: text your parents 'got 2 grams for $40' then right after 'Sorry ignore that txt. Not for you' Then tweet pic of their response," Fielder asked his thousands of followers.

As you might expect, comedy quickly ensued.

Below you can see a few choice reactions from parents who are less than pleased to "accidentally" learn about their child's extracurricular activities:

The rest are here and here.

Butcher Billy’s post-punk Justice League

by Mark Kardwell

Billy Header

Butcher Billy, Brazilian king of the pop culture/comic book mash-up, is at it again. This time, it’s reimagining some of the key figures of post-punk and New Wave as the Justice League. Billy defines the dichotomy behind these images as “real people or imaginary characters, the incorruptible ideals of perfect superheroes or the human flaws and desires sometimes so desperately depicted in song lyrics.”

There’s some good likenesses there, but my favorite bit is when he Photoshops his designs onto T-shirts worn by his original models. I really can’t see the famously curmudgeonly Morrissey approving of being compared to a corporate flagship alpha male like Superman. That said, didn’t Mark Waid rewrite DC Comic continuity to make Clark Kent a vegetarian? Dunno if that still stands, though. There have been at least two reboots since Birthright, haven’t there?

Irish Judge Orders 'The Internet' To Delete Video

by Unknown Lamer
New submitter edanto writes "A young Irish man wrongly accused of jumping from a taxi without paying the fare has secured a judgement from an Irish court ordering the video removed from the entire Internet. Experts from Google, Youtube, Facebook, and others must tell the court in two weeks if this is technically possible. The thing is, the video is accurate, it is only a comment that wrongly identified Eoin McKeogh as the fare-jumper in the video that is inaccurate. It's not clear if the judge has made any orders about the comment."

"2001: A Space Odyssey" Howard Johnsons Children's Menu (1968)

by noreply@blogger.com (John Sisson)

Sometimes work gets in the way of blogging but I am back with lots of cool stuff.

I never thought of 2001 as a children's film, but it did make an impression on me when I saw it as a child. While incomprehensible in some ways (especially the ending) it did show a grand scheme for my future in space.

Howard Johnsons was actually aboard the 2001 space station in a brief product placement.  They also issued a children's menu which highlighted the movie (and their placement) but gave the story of the movie in a slightly different way than I remember.

However the comic itself reproduces some great visuals from the movie. Cue the music....

I love the final stereotyping where the boy wants to be a space pilot and the girl a space stewardess!

And just for fun, here is your activity page:

5-16-13 By popular demand here is the whole activity page and the menu.

Also someone commented on the cover's resemblance to Jack Kirby's cover of Race for The Moon (1958). I happen to have a good copy of the original art of that cover. What do you think?

Karateka Classic coming to iOS, Android
History repeats itself in both video games and colas it seems. Years after releasing the original Karateka, Jordan Mechner revised the formula, giving the world "new" Karateka. Some people liked the new flavor - others, not so much. Hearing the demand of fans everywhere, Mechner has announced that Karateka Classic is coming back, specifically to iOS and Android.

Karateka Classic recreates the Apple II experience - right down to the disk drive noises - and offers a range of "monitor" choices, including color CRT, green or amber display. There are a couple of new additions, including gameplay tips and a rewind feature that can be earned, allowing players to reverse their mistakes.

Karateka Classic arrives on iOS and Android tomorrow for $0.99.

The BBC discovers the Texas Germans — and a dying dialect

by Maggie Koerth-Baker
Russian Sledges

#notbavarian

My great-grandmother, Hedwig Nietzsche Koerth, never spoke English. My Grandpa Gustav didn't learn the language until he entered first grade. But, by the time I was in grade school — and was going through a brief fling of learning German — Grandpa no longer remembered much of what had once been his first language. Today, nobody in my immediate family speaks any German, much less the dying dialect of Texas German that my great-grandmother spoke. The BBC has an interesting story about the history and linguistics of Texas German, which will probably die out in the next couple generations — largely because the German Germans started a couple world wars in a row and changed the idea of what was and wasn't socially acceptable speech in America.

BBC News - Star Wars and Doctor Who fans clash at Norwich convention:

Trouble flared at the fourth Norwich Sci-Fi and Film Convention at the University of East Anglia, organised by Norwich Star Wars Club.

Police were called after members of the rival Norwich Sci-Fi club arrived to get autographs from two Doctor Who actors at the event on Sunday.

Jim Poole, treasurer of Norwich Sci-Fi Club, said there was a history of rivalry and disputes between the two clubs, which both hold their own conventions in the city.

Arctic Wolf Cubs Can Howl With The Best of Them

by Andrew Bleiman

PA_Woelfe1

April 27th marked the arrival of baby Arctic Wolves At Zoo Vienna. The cubs are now ready to leave the den from time to time for short excursions into the outside world. “Like in the wild, mother Inja raises her young in a burrow where they cannot be observed. Up to now, five young animals have been spotted outside the den. Only time will tell if they will all survive.” explains the zoo’s director, Dagmar Schratter.

At about two weeks old, the cubs began to open their eyes. Now curiosity is starting to get the better of them. Unlike the adult animals, they still have brown fur. Schratter: “Arctic Wolves have white fur, which is very conspicuous in the zoo enclosure. In their native environment, the northern regions of North America, Greenland and the Arctic their colour blends in almost totally with the snowy landscape and is the ideal camouflage with which they are almost invisible to their prey.”

Cold War: Map shows areas prohibited to Soviet travelers in the United States

by russiansledges
This map shows where Soviet citizens, who were required to have a detailed itinerary approved before obtaining a visa, could and could not go during their time in the United States. Most ports, coastlines, and weapons facilities were off-limits, as were industrial centers and several cities in the Jim Crow South.
