In Twelve Years A Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Solomon Northup, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.
Here's something of another victory for new media over old media.
The New York Times on Tuesday corrected a 161-year-old report about the enslavement of Solomon Northup, after a Twitter user pointed out that the story had twice misspelled Northup's name — including in the headline.
Northup is the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., man whose story is told in 12 Years a Slave — the movie that on Sunday night won an Oscar as 2013's best picture.
The error was noticed, it would seem, after a sharp-eyed reader came across this PDF of the Times' Jan. 20, 1853, report about Northup.
The newspaper says today in its correction that:
"An article on Jan. 20, 1853, recounting the story of Solomon Northup, whose memoir '12 Years a Slave' became a movie 160 years later that won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday night, misspelled his surname as Northrop. And the headline misspelled it as Northrup. The errors came to light on Monday after a Twitter user pointed out the article in The Times archives. (The errors notwithstanding, The Times described the article as 'a more complete and authentic record than has yet appeared.')"
This is the second decision in recent months by a newspaper to correct an error made long ago. Last November, as we reported, The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa., retracted an editorial written in November 1863 that had panned President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
By the way, it looks like NPR.org has gotten Northup's name wrong at least twice — in posts by The Record and Code Switch blogs. We've alerted our corrections desk.

I came across this image this morning over on Old House Gardens’ page about forcing bulbs. I’ve never seen such wonderful forcing pots and I would love to find something as charming as that hedgehog crocus pot for some late winter fun (but I’d be thrilled to have any of them!).

A quick eBay search turned up absolutely nothing. Has anyone ever seen something like this? Know a source? Or perhaps you know someone who is making modern day versions? Do share – I would be so grateful.

Here’s lovely garden of cacti and succulents, on the tops of cupcakes! Alana Jones-Mann made them, and will show you how you can do it yourself. Make your favorite cupcakes, cover them in a bed of “sand,” and mix up some cactus-colored icing. Of course, you’ll do this to impress people, but warn the person who grabs the tall cactus about the toothpick inside that keeps it upright. But if your guests think they are too pretty to eat, your job is done, and you can eat them yourself later! -via Blazenfluff

"ThOR Boston IRL hangout, tonight, Monday, March 3, Brick & Mortar, 567 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA, 9pm, watch @multitasksuicide play some music."
The Globe reports on the decision by the South Boston Association of Non-Profits to march under the don't-ask-don't-tell restrictions set by parade organizers.

MassEquality says no deal.
But what about the Imperial storm troopers?
Peter Wilson at WBZ reports the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Harvard won't let its students march in the St. Patrick's Day parade in South Boston because it doesn't want anybody thinking it condones "the homosexual lifestyle" it's apparently convinced parade organizers now countenance by letting a group that supports gay rights promote "diversity."
The school pulled out of a parade in Worcester last year for the same reason.
The Animal Rescue League reports it was called to a Dorchester playground today to try to round up a pair of Guinea fowl. They report they caught one, but the other one flew away.
Not the kind of birds usually seen in a Dorchester playground.

Rodarte, AW14, New York.
From a construction perspective, the Rodarte collections tend to revive or reference the sort of techniques you’d expect to see in a dusty craft magazine whether it’s patchwork and quilting, or in the case of Autumn-Winter 2014, smocking and crochet. In a way it is by adopting these homely, retro construction techniques that helps to give depth to the awkward nostalgia of their collections.
Awkward in the sense that there’s obviously deliberate choices that are made in the fabrics, styling and pattern cutting that help to maintain a naive feeling in the collection, rather than opting for out and out glamour. For example, where lace fabrics are used they are often pieced together in clashing colours, rather than layered like a haute couture gown. Where crochet is used it is often scrunched and laced with lurex, in this case sprawling over tops and bags.
There are lots of “pretty” elements, such as sparkly fabrics and beaded smocking but even these are played down. For example, sparkly fabrics were used in this collection on deconstructed jackets that seemed to hang from their lapels, sometimes paired with oversized collars or clashing facing colours.
The styling of the collection also played into an almost gawky tween feeling because aside from the bookish glasses and glittery lips and nails, the evening dresses were sometimes layered over turtle necks made from mottled cut and sew knits. It’s almost as though someone’s been told to go back to their room and put a skivvy on before they are allowed to go out in their new dress.
The real gowns of the collection were the perfect example of this down played aesthetic. If you are going to drape some evening dresses with silk satin and tulle dotted with gold, why not decorate these dresses with star wars icons, like Yoda and C-3PO just so that it doesn’t all get too serious?
You can see more examples of smocking and gain a better understanding of the technique by viewing Contemporary Smocking Techniques»

'Not only must he prove that Faircloth's statements damaged his reputation, he also has to prove that he didn't rape her and that she lied about it because she intended to harm him. Proving malice could be tricky: Why would she want to hurt Oberst? And why would someone lie about being sexually assaulted? What could be gained from that? Nothing, really.
Oberst's complaint implies that a different set of questions can be raised—about Faircloth's credibility and the veracity of her claims—from her long trail of online activity. According to court documents, she has a history of "catfishing"—posing as a boy online, even passing herself off as a cancer patient. And while none of that has anything to do with rape allegations, Oberst's legal team is making use of these details in order to tear down both Faircloth and her side of the story.'

TIM DRAPER, a rich Silicon Valley investor who wants to divide California into six states, began his press conference this week with the word “Shit!”, as he toppled the microphones placed before him. That may also be how he ends his campaign. Even if he secures the 807,615 signatures he needs to place his idea on the ballot, and somehow manages to convince a majority of Californian voters to back it, it must still be approved by the Californian legislature as well as Congress. That will not happen.
Mr Draper, who made his fortune backing the likes of Skype and Baidu, is no fool; his motives in pursuing this quixotic dream are unclear. Still, even if his answer is silly, he is asking a good question. With 38m people of innumerable backgrounds working in sectors from marijuana to manufacturing, spread over 164,000 spectacularly diverse square miles, there is little to knit California together. Its icons—Hollywood, Silicon Valley, beaches—are regional, not statewide. The same goes for media markets and sports teams. There are vast health and income disparities across California; two of Mr Draper’s new states would...Continue reading

FINALLY. FROM CHURNING MAGMA AND BILLOWING GASES I HAVE SHAPED AND MOLDED THIS PARADISE. ALL THAT REMAINS IS TO POPULATE IT WITH CREATURES MADE IN MY IMAGE. I DON’T WANT THEM TO HAVE TO WORK OR FORAGE FOR FOOD, THOUGH, SO I SHOULD PROBABLY MAKE SOME KIND OF ANNOYING, IGNORANT, SELF DESTRUCTIVE AND NEUROTIC BIPEDAL ASSHOLES WHOSE INTENSE LONELINESS EVEN IN THE MIDST OF THEIR OWN KIND WILL COMPEL THEM TO SHELTER, FEED, ADORE AND PAMPER MY PRECIOUS CHILDREN.
