Review: Pot Roast Macaroni and Cheese at Friar’s Nook in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

by Wendy

When the menu at Friar’s Nook received a New Year’s makeover, Mac & Cheese-loving hearts went all aflutter over the spins on this classic comfort food.

Bacon Cheeseburger Macaroni and Cheese debuted alongside of Blue Cheese Macaroni and Cheese with Balsamic (and a more traditional take topped with Panko crumbs arrived as well).

So, changes at Friar’s Nook aren’t entirely unexpected, but we have to admit that we were a little surprised to spot another one so soon: The Blue Cheese Macaroni was recently replaced on the menu with Pot Roast Macaroni and Cheese.

So, prepare yourself for a bowl of comfort food topped with hearty helping of… MORE comfort food!

Friar's Nook Menu

Pot Roast Macaroni and Cheese

Pot Roast Macaroni and Cheese

The first thing I noticed was the topping on this dish is less involved than its counterpart, the Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese. Where the Bacon Cheeseburger Mac is topped with ground beef, bacon, lettuce and tomato, the Pot Roast Mac & Cheese is topped with simply that: a pile of pot roast on top of the macaroni.

Pot Roast on the top

Pot Roast on the top

Things started out great: the pot roast was very well-prepared. Tender and juicy — and mine had very little in the way of fat. OK, not that that’s huge concern when you’re eating beef-covered mac and cheese ;), but my point is, the meat was really good, and actually  tasted homemade.

The second component is, of course, the Mac & Cheese. There is even more cheese to this mac & cheese than the name implies. For those accustomed to the mac & cheese found at buffets around Disney property, or commonly offered as a Kids’ option, there seems to be more shredded cheese in addition to the melted cheese sauce that we’re used to.

Extra cheesy mac!

Extra cheesy mac!

While the flavor is outstanding, and the cheese tasted great with the pot roast, the extra cheese lends a heaviness to this dish that – at least for me – was overwhelming. I had to wave the white flag of surrender much sooner than I wanted to, because even though the flavors were great, it was just too much.

Pot Roast and Macaroni together

Pot Roast and Macaroni together

The bowls of Mac & Cheese seem small for the price at first glance ($8.99 for this one), but it is a LOT of food for the buck, and I’d absolutely recommend sharing because it is so, SO rich.

Full portion of Pot Roast Macaroni & Cheese

Full portion of Pot Roast Macaroni & Cheese

Two thoughts on this menu update: one, I wish they had kept the Blue Cheese Mac on the menu with this new addition, since it was cool to have a vegetarian option that was pretty unique.

Two, I think the timing on this one might be a wee bit off. Friar’s Nook has only outdoor seating, and now that the temps are really starting to rise in Florida, I have to admit…curling up with this dish when it’s 95 degrees is not the most appealing thought ;) . If the mac & cheese menu at Friar’s Nook holds up, though, I do like the thought of trying this dish again in the cooler months. The concept is really fun, and the dish is quite well made. I think there is potential here for a favorite.

Something good to know: Prior to January, I had a really hard time ever finding Friar’s Nook open… like, ever, since it is a “seasonal spot” reserved for high-crowd days. Ever since the menu revamp, though, I have seen it open on just about every Magic Kingdom visit, particularly in the midday hours. So, I think hopes of catching Friar’s Nook open are higher than ever – the spot is prime, being in very close proximity to the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which will officially open to the public on May 28th.

And they gotta be ready, ‘cuz you never know when Doc, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy, Grumpy, or Dopey may get a hankerin’ for some Pot Roast Mac & Cheese ;) !

Terry Crews is many things to all the people. He’s a devoted father, loving husband, farmer’s market attendee, yogurt connoisseur, guy who occasionally forgets how to breathe, and now the Ebony Falcon will continue to soar as the next host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, as rumored.

Old Spice pitchman Terry Crews [has sealed] a deal to become the new host of the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for the next 13th season, which launches in the fall. He succeeds Cedric the Entertainer, who hosted the show this season. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is going through a number of changes, some of them cost-saving, heading into the 2014-15 season. Now that he’s a sitcom star and game show host, it’s time for him to start dominating singing shows, too.

So Here’s A Vegetarian ‘Game Of Thrones’-Themed Burger Called The Kale-esi

by dguproxx
Matt.weiland

what show is this

khaleesi

pornburger

Do you enjoy the popular HBO television show Game of Thrones, confusing wordplay, and aggressively not eating meat? You do?! Well then I have excellent news for you: the mad scientist behind Pornburger has created a Game of Thrones-themed vegetarian burger called “the Kaleesi.” Get it? Kale-esi.

“Moon of my Stars” … “Mother of Dragons” … Call this smoldering dinosaur kale burger what you will, just don’t call it weak. Smokey morsels of crisped shiitake “bacon,” crown a regal beet gratin, smothered in Red Dragon cheese on top of a crunchy, berberre-rubbed kale patty, heirloom tomato, and slathering of sumac aioli. Dracarys! (Translation: “F*ck raw horse heart!”)

Okay, so three things:

1) If you’re going to make a kale-based Game of Thrones burger, it should be called “the Kale Drogo.” It just rolls off the tongue better. Plus, it allows you to avoid a situation where you have to choose between (a) inserting a hyphen in the title — as I did in the headline — and risking the possibility that people won’t get that “Kale-esi” means Khaleesi, or (b) leaving it as is and getting yelled at by thousands of high-strung fans who think you misspelled the name of their beloved dragon warrior queen. So, yeah. Kale Drogo. Here to help.

2) No. Nope nope nope. And I don’t say that because I’m some meat-lovin’, man-cave-dwellin’ zealot, either. Eat whatever the hell you want, I say, plant-based or otherwise. It’s just that … it just doesn’t fit. Game of Thrones is a show that is fully committed to violent murder, and horse decapitation, and occasional arm-roasting. Turning that into a veggie burger just feels wrong, like a Mad Men virgin cocktail or a Justified, uh … a Justified … reverse … gun? Crap. I’ll work on that last one and get back to you.

3) More like this plz, Pornburger.

A Professor Was Suspended Over This ‘Game Of Thrones’ Shirt His Daughter Wore

by Josh Kurp

Francis Schmidt, an art and 3-D animation professor at Bergen Community College in New Jersey, is a huge Game of Thrones fan, which means his young daughter is a big Brienne booster, too. In January, Schmidt took a photo of seven-year-old Sophia doing a yoga pose while a wearing his Thrones shirt and posted it to Google+. Now, Google+ pictures are usually as popular as a Lannister in Winterfell, but Schmidt’s dean happened to see it, and he was suspended over the shirt’s SHOCKING message.

More like, he should’ve been fired. Get it? FIRED. Eh, you know nothing, everyone.

Schmidt said…he was called before college officials, who questioned him as to whether the photo represented a threat against the dean. Schmidt said the Human Resources and security officials who interviewed him seemed unfamiliar with the show, so he searched for the quote on Google and came up with 30.8 million hits.

He said the interview, however, led to his suspension without pay and a trip to a psychiatrist before he was cleared to return to campus.

Schmidt said he asked the officials why they thought the slogan was threatening, and one said “when you see the word fire, then someone shows up with an AK-47 here shooting everybody,” he said.

“I had no idea what to say to that. For God’s sake, I’m a middle-aged art professor,” Schmidt said. “I don’t own any firearms.” (Via)

So much for Sophia bringing her pet dragon in for show and tell.

Kermit the Frog & Fozzie Bear Hilariously Engage In Improvised Existential Banter During 1979 Camera Test

by Lori Dorn

Kermit the Frog (Jim Henson) and Fozzie Bear (Frank Oz) hilariously engage in improvised existential banter about their greater state of being during this 1979 camera test for their first “live-action” film, The Muppet Movie.

Kermit: Well Fozzie, the thing of it is though you’re not a real bear. You’re not a real natural bear. I mean, you’re talking about a bear in its natural habitat…What do you have, you have sort of a fake fur. You’ve got foam rubber. You’ve got foam rubber and fake fur. You’re an artificial bear. Have you ever seen a bear with a magenta nose?

Fozzie: I got news for you kid. You have to hurt me, I’m going to have to hurt you. Are you ready for this? Are you ready? You got a wire on your arm. It’s only for movement. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I believe in you. I do understand that I am not a real bear but I know what I am. I am what I am. But I’m a real puppet. I’m happy with my lot in life.

Absolutely priceless.

Frozen Out: Searching for an Elsa doll at Disney World

by Seth Kubersky

Elsa doll Disney World

Searching for an Elsa doll or toy at Disney World? Join the club! (Photos by Seth Kubersky)

My family up north doesn’t necessarily share or understand my theme park obsessions, but every so often they call upon my Orlando expertise. Recently, my young niece lost her mind over Frozen (much like half of America, it seems) and wants an Elsa doll more than life itself.

Unfortunately, it seems Barbie-sized “Sparkle Princess” figures of this frigid sister are scarcer than snowmen in summer, as toy stores throughout the New York and Philadelphia regions are chronically out of stock. So I gallantly volunteered to play the heroic uncle by finding one and bringing it to her during my upcoming visit. Surely it would be simple to find an Elsa doll inside one of Walt Disney World’s infinite gift shops…or so I foolishly thought.

I was so wrong.

In several days of hunting, I’ve been unable to find an Elsa doll for sale inside Walt Disney World, and almost all other merchandise connected to the character is out of stock throughout the resort. (If you want Anna toys, you can take your pick, as there are tons of her products on the shelves.) While I unfortunately can’t tell you where you will find an Elsa doll at Disney World, I can share the wisdom of my fruitless search, which may give you an edge in your own quest, and I wish you better luck than I’ve had so far.

From speaking with several Disney World merchandise cast members in the parks and at a Downtown Disney, I’ve compiled a list of stores most likely to have an Elsa doll in stock:

  • Norway Pavillion’s The Puffin’s Roost gift shop at Epcot
  • Mouse Gear at Epcot
  • World of Disney at Downtown Disney
  • Sunset Animation at Hollywood Studios
  • Creature Comforts at Animal Kingdom
  • Emporium at Magic Kingdom

New Elsa stock comes in almost daily, but with no set schedule or quantity. It can be delivered at any time, and is placed out for sale as soon as it arrives. And it is typically all taken within hours (or minutes) of arrival.

Compounding the challenge, Disney’s inventory computers aren’t updated dynamically during the day, making it impossible to know what is available at any given moment without a lot of legwork. For example, on a recent morning, there were 30 Elsa dolls in inventory at World of Disney, 15 at Mouse Gear, and 9 at Sunset Animation; by early afternoon, all were gone.

The gift shop that adjoins the Frozen meet and greet in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion is currently ground zero for Elsa merchandise, and I’m told it is the top priority when new product arrives. For your best chance at snagging an Elsa toy, arrive here at rope drop and make the Puffin’s Roost your first destination, returning throughout the day to check for restocking. Once their meet and greet relocates on April 20 to Magic Kingdom’s Princess Fairytale Hall, you’ll find the lion’s share of Frozen items there.

The queue to meet Anna and Elsa becomes hours long within minutes of rope drop.

Of course, if you can’t find the Elsa doll you are in search of, and don’t want to wait two or more hours to meet her, you can always console yourself with the Frozen-themed artifact exhibit in the Stave Church Gallery. There’s never a line, and it’s air-conditioned inside!

‘The Simpsons’ Will Debut On FXX With A 12-Day, 522-Episode Marathon

by Danger Guerrero

Getty Image

Back in November, FXX paid a cool $750 million for “the exclusive cable and VOD/non-linear rights” to The Simpsons, which is highfalutin industry speak for “the right to show episodes from any season whenever they want on television and set up a VOD-streaming site/app/something that will allow viewers to access individual episodes on their computer/tablet/phone/something.” This was, and still is, excellent news. And speaking of excellent news, there’s this: FX top banana Jon Landgraf announced today that (a) the app is coming soon, and (b) FXX will start rolling out the episodes this August, and will kick the celebration off with a 12-day marathon of all of the show’s 522 episodes.

“It will be the longest continuous marathon in the history of television,” said Jon Landgraf, chief executive of FX Networks, at an upfront presentation held in New York Wednesday. A new app is expected to debut in coming weeks, and while executives at the presentation suggested the name “Simpsons World” had been bandied about, FX Networks spokesman John Solberg said a name for the digital outlet was “not formalized yet.” The app would be distinct from FX’s “FXNow” mobile-viewing application already available.

If all of this doesn’t result in a haunting documentary titled 12 Days in August about one Simpsons fan’s descent into madness as he tries to stay awake for the whole marathon, I will be sorely disappointed.
