Jared’s Job Not So Cushy

by Celia Rivenbark

You know how most sons-in-law try to ingratiate themselves with the wife’s parents by helping with a weekend project? A good son-in-law will cheerily agree to help lay sod in the back yard or assemble the new gas grill. Sometimes, it’s as simple as a quick run to the hardware store for leaf bags […]

'It’s tearing families apart': Watch Holocaust survivor's testimony condemning ICE arrests

by rss@dailykos.com (Gabe Ortiz)

A Holocaust survivor and U.S. military veteran testified against anti-immigrant bills pending in the Michigan House of Representatives, describing a childhood lived in constant fear and comparing Trump’s mass deportation force to the arrests of Jewish people by the Nazis.

Civil rights advocate, Rene Lichtman, 79, noted his testimony fell on the anniversary of the tragic 1939 voyage of the SS St. Louis. Due to anti-Jewish hostility, the ship—carrying nearly 1,000 Jewish refugees—was turned away from Canada, Cuba, and the U.S. While a handful were able to disembark in Cuba, the rest were forced to return to Europe and an untold number died in the Holocaust.

At times holding up old black and white photos of family members, Lichtman warned legislators—and the rest of us—that he now sees “a lot of parallels” in the Trump era:

“I’m a child survivor of the Holocaust,” Lichtman said. “I was about 2 years old when the war began and I went into hiding. My family members were picked up in the streets of Paris in the very same way that ICE people are deputizing local police and picking [undocumented immigrants] up in the streets.”

He said that the French police, “deputized by the Nazis,” kept lists of Jews in Paris, “including Jewish children, including children on my street, who were picked up and went to the gas chambers while I was fortunate to be in hiding.”

“I see a lot of parallels to what is going on in cities like Ann Arbor and Pontiac, where ICE is coming in and with the help of the local police are picking up immigrants,” Lichtman said.

9th Circuit Court Rejects Muslim Ban

by Prachi Gupta on The Slot, shared by Julianne Escobedo Shepherd to Jezebel

On Monday, the three judges on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals passed a unanimous decision to continue to block the Trump administration’s revised travel ban, which barred individuals from six Muslim-majority countries for 90 days and refugees for 120 days. The ruling comes less than one month after the 4th Circuit…

Comey wasn't the only one who got creepy calls from Trump—Preet Bharara refused to answer

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)
ThePrettiestOne

Hey, did anyone have "Trump is an eldritch horror who can only reveal himself to one person at a time, and has the the entire GOP locked in terror of having to ever see his true face again?
You might win money!!

James Comey’s first personal encounter with Donald Trump was so disconcerting that Comey rushed outside to begin noting down the events of that evening. But Comey wasn’t the only one who thought that Trump’s personal contacts with those working in the Justice Department were inappropriate.

Preet Bharara, a prominent former U.S. attorney ousted by President Trump, said Sunday that he reported to the Justice Department efforts by the president to “cultivate some kind of relationship” with him, describing phone calls from Trump that made him increasingly uncomfortable. …

“And I’m not the FBI director,” he said, “but I was the chief federal law enforcement officer in Manhattan with jurisdiction over a lot of things including, you know, business interests and other things in New York.”

And, just as it had with Comey, going to Jefferson Sessions brought zero satisfaction. The calls from Trump kept coming. Eventually, Bharara decided the only solution was to simply not take Trump’s call. That definitely got a response.

President Donald Trump fired U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara the day after the prosecutor refused to return a call from him, Bharara said on ABC News’ “This Week” Sunday.

Trump doesn’t have to “apply pressure.” He can toss in a nice “I hope.” If he just fires the people who don’t cooperate, everyone else will get the message.

Look, this is my litmus test: I pretend I am the original Earl of Sandwich. I have asked for non-bread foods to be brought to me inside bread, that I might more easily consume them one-handed while gambling.

This does not enable my wretched regency habits. This is not what I asked for. I do not deign to grace it with the name of my house.

This is the most important addition to the sandwich discourse I have ever read.

Do you believe and support all these "new" genders?

Tbvh none of them are new. We just finally have words and phrases that more accurately define how people have been for thousands of years.

And honestly, what does it hurt me for people to be themselves? It’s not like they’re out forcing you to identify as the same thing. They just asking you to learn a few words/phrases and to respect their existence.

It ain’t that hard Bruh. Let people live

Ivanka Trump, Ironically, Can't Believe How 'Vicious' People Are About Her Equally Vicious Father

by Aimée Lutkin on The Slot, shared by Julianne Escobedo Shepherd to Jezebel
ThePrettiestOne

So he's taking away healthcare, and deporting, apparently, anyone with brown skin, under conditions in which it appears that way too many are dying. Why would people say mean things about her daddy over that?

Ivanka Trump appeared on Fox & Friends Monday to give a little update on her life, and reiterate her father’s talking points about the James Comey hearing after Donald Trump Jr. bungled it over the weekend.

Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore Admits the Cylons Never Had a Plan at All

by Katharine Trendacosta
ThePrettiestOne

Oh, sweetie, we knew. We really did. But it was just so THRILLING to see the "And they have a PLAN" at the end of the teaser, or whatever you call it at the beginning of each episode for two seasons. Show had some flaws, but godDAM it was good.
Was, until Trump nearly ruined it for me....

As fans of Battlestar Galactica will recall, every episode began with a short synopsis: “The Cylons were created by man. The rebelled. They evolved. There are many copies. And they have a plan.” But... did they? Or was that just a big tease? Turns out it’s the latter, and now we know why: because an executive producer…

Jeff Sessions will testify publicly before Senate Intelligence Committee

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)
ThePrettiestOne

Also expected to lie like a (lumpy) rug, just like in his confirmation hearing.

Is it too cynical to suggest that Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III must have decided on a plausible set of lies, evasions, and half-truths about Donald Trump and Russia and obstruction of justice and his own contacts with Russia? In any case, he’ll be testifying publicly before the Senate Intelligence Committee Tuesday afternoon (at 2:30 PM ET), presumably trying to rebut most of what former FBI Director James Comey said last week.

“He believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him and looks forward to answering the committee’s questions tomorrow,” DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.

Ah, THE TRUTH, directly from the racist Keebler elf himself.

To return to my opening question with another rhetorical question, is it even possible to be too cynical about anything in Donald Trump’s orbit?

mswyrr:

Some of the Amazons, like Kroes, auditioned, while the filmmakers plucked others from the athletic world — Brooke Ence, an American Crossfit champion, and Madeleine Vall Beijner, a Swedish professional fighter, among them. “I got an e-mail asking if I could do fighting on film,” Beijner recalls. “I said, ‘Well, yes, I can fight, and I think I can fight in a movie. So yes, I’ll do it!’ ”

Months before the cameras started rolling, the women gathered in London for weeks of training. Not only did they go through basic strength training to look properly Amazonian, but they also spent hours each day practicing swordplay, horseback riding and stunt choreography. “The trainers said they wanted us to look like the female version of 300,” Beijner says. For several of the athletes, many of whom compete in individual sports, it was a refreshing change of pace to feel like part of an all-female team. “It really is cool to see this whole training area, and there’s not one male figure in sight,” Ence adds. “It’s just women wrestling other women, kickboxing, doing pull-ups and practicing with spears — just a lot of stuff that in the real world is very male-dominated.”

[…]

Once they all donned their Amazon armor and took to the beach for the big Themysciran battle scenes, Ence says she was surprised by how easy it was to tap into her inner warrior, especially when surrounded by a whole horde of fellow soldiers. “The first day we were on-set with all of our swords and shields, it felt like a different type of power,” she says. “And we looked awesome.” She wasn’t the only one who got swept up by all the swords and stunts: Kroes recalls a day when her young son visited her, and she greeted him in full battle regalia. “If I could just have that face framed as a picture on my wall,” she says. “I think I melted because he has never looked at me like that ever. He was just in full admiration of his mommy as a warrior.”

So my friends and I tried to go to the beach today but we ended up pulling a cat out of a car engine instead

Her name is Muffler

UM SO??? UPDATE ON MUFFLER????

I woke up this morning to feed her and take her to the Humane Society and I Could Not Find Her.  She was in my bathroom last anyone saw and then she suddenly just wasn’t.  So we spend all day looking for her, putting bowls of catfood out, leaving out her blankies, to no avail.  All day I heard whispers of her - the jingle of her collar, tiny mews, etc., but no Muffler.

It got to the point that I dragged @punkoz two hrs across the state to come help me find her and while she was on her way I fucking heard her in the bathroom.
