THE FALL THE FALL THE FALL THE FALL THIS IS LITERALLY MY FAVOURITE MOVIE IN ALL THE WORLD. I'M NOT EVEN JOKING. I LOVE IT MORE THAN I LOVE THE PRINCESS BRIDE. I SAW IT IN CINEMA WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT (TWICE) AND I CRIED. IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF CINEMATIC ART I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED. THE FALL.

HELLO YES CAN WE SCREAM ABOUT “THE FALL” TOGETHER, IT’S KIND OF RARE TO FIND ANOTHER FAN OF THAT MOVIE SO I RARELY TALK ABOUT IT OKAY IT’S ONE OF THE RARE MOVIES I CAN GET EXTREMELY PASSIONATE ABOUT

SO I’M GONNA TALK ABOUT IT NOW

SO IF ANYONE ELSE IS READING THIS: BASICALLY IT LOOKS PRETENTIOUS AND OVER THE TOP BUT IN FACT IT’S THE VERY VERY SMALL STORY OF TWO PEOPLE IMAGINING A STORY TOGETHER AND IT’S SO TOUCHING

THEY ARE BOTH WOUNDED AND BORED AND THEY ARE MAKING A BIG EPIC, THE ADULT NARRATES AND THE KID IMAGINES THE VISUALS

SO THEY LOOK LIKE THIS

image

BUT IN THEIR IMAGINARY WORLD THEY LOOK LIKE THIS

image

AND WE QUICKLY NOTICE THAT THE ADULT’S STORY ISN’T VERY ORIGINAL, THE GUY JUST TAKES A LOT OF ELEMENTS FROM A LOT OF EXISTING THINGS TO CREATE HIS STORY

BUT THE KID, ALEXANDRIA, IMAGINES ALL THE VISUALS AND SHE HAS AN INCREDIBLE IMAGINATION AND IT’S PURE EYE CANDY

I MEAN

image
image
image

THE COLORS

THE COLORS LOOK AT THE COLORS

ALSO SHE DISTORTS SOME DETAILS BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING HE’S SAYING, FOR EXAMPLE IN HIS STORY THERE’S AN “INDIAN” AND HE’S SUPPOSED TO BE A STEREOTYPICAL & KINDA OFFENSIVE AMERICAN INDIAN CHARACTER BUT THE ONLY “INDIAN” SHE KNOWS IN REAL LIFE IS FROM INDIA

SO IN HER VERSION HE LOOKS LIKE THIS

image

ALSO LOOK AT THAT TEAM THERE’S A MASKED BANDIT WHO CAN’T PICK AN ACCENT AND AN INDIAN WARRIOR AND AN EXPLOSIVES EXPERT AND A BADASS EX-SLAVE AND CHARLES MOTHERF█CKING DARWIN IN A WEIRD-ASS COAT

NOT PICTURED HERE: A MYSTIC COVERED IN MUD WHO KEEPS LIVING BIRDS IN HIS STOMACH AND THE DAUGHTER OF THE MASKED BANDIT WHO’S BASICALLY A SELF-INSERT CHARACTER FOR ALEXANDRIA

image

ALSO THEIR WHOLE STORY IS SLOWLY INFLUENCED BY THEIR OWN LIVES AND I’M NOT GONNA SPOIL ANYTHING ELSE BUT IT’S BOTH CLEVER AND SIMPLE

BASICALLY THERE’S A MOVIE

IT’S CALLED “THE FALL”

I LOVE IT

IT’S BEEN NINE YEARS AND I’M STILL SCREAMING

How False Narratives of Margaret Sanger Are Being Used to Shame Black Women

How False Narratives of Margaret Sanger Are Being Used to Shame Black Women:

madgastronomer:

fat-on-purpose:

mediaconsortium:

At the outset, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that whether or not Planned Parenthood had its roots in anti-Blackness is irrelevant in a discussion of the services that Planned Parenthood provides in 2015, ranging from abortion care to prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, to Pap smears and other forms of cancer screening.

The United States is rooted in anti-Blackness.

Anti-Blackness was built into the U.S. Constitution by this country’s Founding Fathers.

Nearly every major corporation that exists today was either founded by racists, employed racists, built their business on anti-Blackness and slavery, or all of the above.

Any argument that Black women in America should disavow Planned Parenthood because of some history of anti-Blackness would necessarily require that Black women disavow the very country in which we live.

Sanger and her peers (check out Marie Stopes) WERE anti-black. They WERE pro-eugenics. This is a fact. The antichoicers are twisting that info to make black woman miserable. That is also anti-blackness.

Because of that, anti-blackness is NEVER irrelevant.

Antichoicers are trying to bend all they know about Sanger into a tool to hurt women of color and especially black women; I stand against that. Yes, our country is built on racial inequality but that doesn’t mean we don’t keep trying to fight it. And censorship of PP’s history of Anti-Blackness is wrong. It is, in fact, its own form of Anti-blackness.

Transparency.

Sanger was pro-eugenics and anti-black early in her career. Fact. She turned away from eugenics and became less anti-black (but didn’t lose it entirely) later in life. Fact.

We must acknowledge these things. It’s an important part of the history of PP. But it’s also important that PP is not those things any more, and that it is an important resource for many Black people.

Dear Filmmakers: Stalking is Not Romantic

Dear Filmmakers: Stalking is Not Romantic:

TW for stalking, sexual harassment

“After its release in June, Baahubali swiftly broke all Indian box office records, earning $50 million. As Forbes notes, “That makes it the most successful opening in the history of India’s prolific, multi-language film industry which makes over a thousand films each year.”

Unfortunately, like many South Indian films, it centers on an aggressive male hero. Baahubali is billed as an action-adventure romance, an epic drama about two warring brothers and a rebellious warrior woman who is trying to free a queen from prison. At its center is a story of the hero—a man who stalks and sexually harasses the female warrior until he breaks her spirit and independence. She is the leader of a powerful guerilla rebel group. But when she tries to fight off his romantic advances, he disrobes her, gives her a makeover, and in about the span of a minute, makes her fall in love with him! From then on, she is not a warrior anymore. Yep—this is the stuff of cinema gold.

Despite its popularity, the film has garnered some criticism, including from the Indian pop culture blog The Ladies Finger. “The heroic alpha male wins through constant pressure, sabotage, shows of strength,” writes critic Vivekananda Nemana. “Need I even mention the implications for real life street harassment and stalking?”

We agree. Films like Baahubali which have women give into the persistent and aggressive advances of a man perpetuate the dangerous idea that it’s romantic when men refuse to take “no” for an answer—that a woman’s “no” should be met with constant pressure to change her mind.

The stalking-as-romance theme is obviously not limited to Bollywood—Hollywood is enamored with “romantic” male stalkers. “Stalking is love” is so common that the problematic plot device has its whole own category at TVtropes.org. It’s way too easy to put together a list of 50 romantic movie heroes who are technically stalkers—think about Mr. Big from Sex and the City or Edward in Twilight, both of whom try to keep in constant contact with the object of their desire even after she tells him to leave her alone. We often see leading men in films lie, manipulate, blackmail, and persistently pursues their love interest even when she clearly and repeatedly tells them “no.”

This ring lets blind people read non-Braille books

One of the problems with Braille is that it’s typically printed in specialist books aside from the copies created for sighted people, meaning that those with sight difficulties can’t borrow their friends’ books and need to seek out the bookstores and libraries that cater for them. In the past, we’ve seen projects such as Thailand’sMr. Light and Mr. Dark — which uses special typography to enable the blind and non-blind to read the same book. Now the FingerReader initiative from MIT provides visually impaired readers with a wearable ring that can scan written text and read it out loud. READ MORE…

Guys. Science has developed a talking ring that allows the blind to read books.

This is not only amazing, it is the stuff of fairy tales.

Well I would say this is more the stuff of sci fi, but let’s not mince words.

This is without a doubt one of the most wonderful inventions anyone’s come up with

#books for everyone

AS IT SHOULD BE :D

At the same time, i really hope that this doesn’t lead to people saying shit like “now we don’t need Braille!”

"Compulsory heterosexuality works most powerfully in the most casual modes of conversation. One asks:..."

“Compulsory heterosexuality works most powerfully in the most casual modes of conversation. One asks: ‘Do you have a boyfriend?’ to a girl, or one asks ‘Do you have a girlfriend?’ (to a boy). Queer subjects feel the tiredness of making corrections and departures; the pressure of this insistence, this presumption, this demand that asks either for a ‘passing over’ (a moment of passing, which is not always available) or for direct or indirect forms of self-revelation (‘but actually, he’s a she’ or ‘she’s a he’, or just saying ‘she’ instead of ‘he’ or ‘he’ instead of 'she’ at the obvious moment). No matter how 'out’ you may be, how (un)comfortably queer you may feel, those moments of interpellation get repeated over time, and can be experienced as a bodily injury; moments which position queer subjects as failed in their failure to live up to the 'hey you too’ of compulsory heterosexuality.”

The article in question:  Marvel Shake-Up: Film Chief Kevin Feige Breaks Free of CEO Ike Perlmutter (Exclusive)

From the article:

The revamp is a blow to New York-based Perlmutter, a low-profile billionaire who has contributed to Marvel’s reputation in Hollywood for frugality and secrecy (as THR reported in a 2014 feature, he attended the premiere of Iron Man in a disguise to go undetected and once complained that journalists at a press junket were allowed two sodas instead of one).

Wow. He sounds like a great dude.

We cover this in our next episode.

OK, I don't care about sports, but if someone around me is going to talk about Serena Williams body in anything less than a reverent, respectful tone, I am going to have to sit them down for a LONG talk about proper respect, and the struggles that women, all women, and especially black women face in finding a way to fit into the world in the body they are in. There will be cookies. There will be crying.

renew-leverage: renew-leverage: @ thatsnarkydragon : oh, man,...

renew-leverage:

renew-leverage:

@ thatsnarkydragon : oh, man, I have now giffed these scenes so many times, and I still want to cry about it. To add something new, here’s my painstakingly done transcription of the audio commentary for these scenes:

John Rogers: Now, this was interesting. We had a long talk in the writers’ room what this scene was gonna be. Because it is “why hasn’t –” because, let’s face it. Aldis, you’re a good looking man. You’re a very good looking man.
Aldis Hodge: Thank you.
JR: And, Beth, good looking woman. Why has that relationship not progressed farther, you know? And we wanted to not just do the hackneyed “because she was abused as a child,” because, you know, and so we really wanted to work on “why?” And it’s because she doesn’t feel worthy of the friends she’s made and the family she has.
AH: Gotcha.
JR: And a lot of this year is her feeling good enough about herself and feeling like she’s a good enough person to be with.
AH: You know, John, Sexual Chocolate gets a lot of mail about that, you know what I’m saying? It’s true, and I gotta figure out how to explain it.
JR: I know. I know. Boss of Sexual Chocolate also gets a lot of mail about that.
AH: Just saying.
JR: But look at this woman, look at this woman!
AH: That’s ridiculous.
JR: I mean, she’s melting down here. And, by the way, when we’re shooting this? Crew is crying, people behind the set are crying, I mean, she’s just devastating here.
Dean Devlin: She nails this.
AH: Yeah.
DD: It’s also this whole thing about she wants to do the right thing and trying to understand what the right thing is.
JR: That’s what’s great about Parker and what we so lucked into establishing this character first year and that Beth has done a great job of. Most shows have someone who’s just trying to do the right thing, we actually have a character who’s not sure what that is yet. And so it allows us an extra step of that character building. I mean, you know, that’s why we have to go so slow. We don’t want to fastplay this. These are real people in our heads.
AH: Now, what was the motivation between, I mean, as far as putting Parker and Eliot together in that particular situation?
JR: Because, I’ll tell you exactly why, because this is the year Parker starts to figure out that she’s actually a “better person” – quote, unquote – than she thinks she is. And this is the scene, right here. Eliot, because of the events of last year, has come to peace with who he is. And this is the thing, Eliot isn’t trying to redeem himself. A lot of people think Eliot, “oh, he’s doing good things to redeem himself,” Eliot knows he’s going to hell. But he can do some good along the way. And he can help his friends. And that’s his role this year, is a man who is very secure in who he is and who he isn’t in the world. Beth’s previous scene is amazing. This is some great acting, Christian is killing it here. Because what he has to do is he has to reach across this gulf, and, by the way, it only happened because of the way Christian and Beth have played this over the years. Eliot and Parker have a very specific relationship, it’s not brother/sister, it’s not boyfriend/girlfriend, but it is “I know the pain you’re carrying, because I carry a version of it.” And Eliot, at a lot of times, is the only one who can reach across to her, across that gulf, and in that moment, there’s no crying, it’s not showy, Christian acts the shit out of that moment. That is one of the keystone moments of the entire season right there.

Does anyone else have a favorite bit or highlight from The Long Way Down Job?

#OKAY I’M GOING TO SPEW INTO THE TAGS AGAIN  #I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND  #BECAUSE WHEN I LISTENED TO THE COMMENTARY FOR THE FIRST TIME  #IT MADE MY ALREADY FAVORITE SCENE EVEN BETTER  #PARKER HAS SO MUCH GROWTH AND SHE JUST WANTS TO FEEL WORTHY OF THIS FAMILY SHE’S FOUND  #THAT ABSOLUTELY CRUSHES MY HEART THAT SHE DOESN’T FEEL THAT WAY ALREADY  #SHE KNOWS SHE’S NOT EVER GOING TO BE ‘NORMAL’  #SHE JUST WANTS TO MAKE SURE HER FRIENDS UNDERSTAND HER AND ACCEPT HER  #SHE JUST WANTS TO FEEL UNDERSTOOD BY THE PEOPLE SHE CARES ABOUT MOST  #AND I JUST CONNECT SO MUCH WITH THIS CHARACTER  #MORE THAN ANY OTHER AND I AM SO THANKFUL TO THIS SHOW  #IT’S A SILLY FUN SHOW BUT THE WAY I’VE COME TO LOVE AND CARE FOR THESE CHARACTERS  #AND CONNECT WITH THEM  #IT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME  #AND JOHN ROGERS IS THE COOLEST PERSON  #AND I LOVE LISTENING TO THE COMMENTARIES BECAUSE HE’S SO INSIGHTFUL  #AND HE GETS IT  #HE ENCOURAGES THE FANFICS AND THE SHIPS AND THE RAREPAIRS AND CELEBRATES THE WORK THE FANS MAKE  #AND HE GETS THE NEED FOR REPRESENTATION AND HE DOES SOMETHING ABOUT IT  #LONG POST GUYS AND I’M SORRY  #BUT I JUST REALLY LOVE THIS SCENE  #IT WAS THE SCENE THAT GOT ME INTO THE SHOW  #AND IT’S STILL ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL SCENES IN ANYTHING  #AND IT MEANS A LOT TO ME  #SO I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT A LOT  #LEVERAGE  #LONG POST FOR TS (tags via wolf-of-fenric)

Daily Kos Democratic Primary Straw Poll 9-1-15

by rss@dailykos.com (kos)
ThePrettiestOne

I just thought of a reason to prefer Bernie over Hillary.
Imagine being able to laugh at people who are OK with him, but who insist that Obama was a SOCIALIST.

People voting.
Every two weeks we take the pulse of the Daily Kos community, seeing how you guys stand on the Democratic primary. Here's how the first three months have looked:

         8/19  8/5  7/21 7/9  6/23  6/9
Sanders   58    58    57    67    63    69
Clinton   34    35    36    29    31    24
O'Malley   1     1     1     1     1     2
Other      1     2     1     1     0     1
No clue    3     2     3     2     1     2

We've gotten over 7,000 respondents every straw poll, so while this isn't a "scientific poll" under any reasonable definition, the consistency of results truly does suggest that the large sample size is giving us a pretty accurate view of this community's preferences in this race. The consistency of results is almost creepy!

In short, the community is locked into its preferences. But will it stay that way? Polling suggests that Bernie Sanders is making a real move in New Hampshire and tightening in Iowa. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton has fallen below 50 percent nationally or she hasn't, depending on which poll you want to believe, with Sanders somewhere in the mid 20s but still on an upward trajectory.

So will the Daily Kos community shift along with national trends, or are we locked into our preferences already? I'm still betting on the latter—we are too politically engaged to follow national trends. But hey, there's only one way to find out. So vote!

p.s. I'm pulling Martin O'Malley from the poll. If "other" starts hitting three percent I'll break him out again. But as of now, this is a two-person game.

Police the police.
Watch the watchmen.

The moment before Gilbert Flores was shot
Gilbert Flores just a split second before being shot and killed by police
Yesterday we received part of a video that seemed to confirm that a peaceful, surrendering, San Antonio, Texas, man was shot with his hands up. Because we only had part of the video, it was difficult to know for certain where this was the case.

Now that we've seen it, it is obvious the man we now know was Gilbert Flores was shot twice while he had his hands in the air. After being shot, he was provided no aid and shown no compassion whatsoever.

This video, seen below, is also very clear in showing that Flores was shirtless and unarmed. The officers do not appear to have any idea they were being filmed.

boredpanda: Cats Who Just Realized You Took Them To The...

ThePrettiestOne

One of my cats is, like, Olympic gold level good at hiding. When we drop them off at the vet's for boarding, we remind them of this. When we go to pick them up, we make sure we don't have anything else to do that day. This cat is small, so she can fit anywhere. She's also REALLY good at just being completely still. She can literally hide in an empty room with neon flashing arrows pointing directly at her. Usually about half an hour after we arrive for pickup a flustered assistant will pop out to explain that they're having... problems finding her. We wave and let them know we know. We know.
