Cartoon: Kneejerkin' (health care edition)

by rss@dailykos.com (Jen Sorensen)

It takes a lot to make my head explode these days, but reading about Martin Shkreli, the hedge fund brat who bought the drug used to treat toxoplasmosis and raised the price from $13.50 a pill to $750, accomplished exactly that. While the Times piece on Shkreli rightly generated a groundswell of outrage, it made me think of all the previous injustices in our health care system that didn't. All the abuses of private health insurance companies prior to the ACA -- the dropping of sick patients, the exorbitant premiums for those with pre-existing conditions, the flat-out denials of coverage dooming people to death or financial ruin -- were just as evil, yet not as easily located in the scandalous behavior of one unsavory person. Remember this article about hospitals charging $137 for a $1 IV drip bag? In a sense, Shkreli simply puts a face on everything that is wrong with America's predatory, profiteering health care system.

The Affordable Care Act was desperately needed to curb its worst excesses, and has worked extremely well. Shkreli serves to remind us of the need for regulation of an industry that obviously cannot be trusted to serve the public interest or behave ethically on its own.

berniesanderscanwin: So I keep seeing those awful misogynistic...

berniesanderscanwin:

So I keep seeing those awful misogynistic Bernie supporters on Facebook and Reddit harping about Hillary Clinton’s $600 haircut, and I honestly couldn’t believe it. I mentioned that, you know, the $600 also covered hair color, with foils, probably a straightening or smoothing treatment, and an incredibly complex layered haircut. And STFU about Hillary’s hair anyway, there are plenty of legitimate things to criticize her for. But then, it hit me.

Men honestly don’t know about any of that. Men actually believe Hillary’s hair grows out of her head looking like in the above photo. They think someone cuts it for her and she pays $600 for that because she’s an idiot, and then she goes home and washes it with shampoo, goes to sleep, runs a comb through it in the morning, and then that’s how it looks! They honestly don’t know the things women, any women, do to make their hair look the way it looks. Presumably many of these men have wives or live-in girlfriends, yet somehow they’ve never noticed. Like, they think blondes are all actually blond. They think our hair is naturally shiny and curly in the right places. Seriously, go find a cishet guy, show him your flat iron, and ask him what it is! He won’t be able to tell you.

It’s just like all those memes guys post on Facebook of the girls with and without make-up. Like, the joke is they take her swimming on the first date because otherwise they would think she actually looked like that. Like they see contouring and metallic eyeshadow and pink lips and they think that’s what our skin does naturally. They are shocked and disgusted to see what women really look like! Good lord, no wonder Hillary Clinton and every other women in the public eye spends a lot of money on her hair. You’ve got to keep up that illusion because otherwise the hetero boys get very confused and pissed off.

This has been an incredibly eye-opening revelation for me.

China Opens Suspension Bridge With A Glass Bottom: Clear View Of 600-Feet Drop Not For The Faint Of Heart [Video]

China Glass Bridge

China has thrown open a unique suspension bridge. With clear glass panels for flooring, visitors will be able to have an unhindered view of a 600-foot valley, while being suspended between two mountain tops.

To cater to thrill seekers and adventure tourists, the 1,000-foot long bridge stares down into the gorge 600-feet below and nothing but a clear glass panel that holds them suspended. The bridge opened last week in Zhangjiaje Grand Canyon in central China’s Hunan province and links two peaks inside the Stone Buddha Mountain in Shiniuzhai Geopark. The mountains are part of the Shiniuzhai National Geological Park, which offers many breathtaking views and features some rare plants and vast ecological diversity.

According to those who envisioned the bridge, it was modeled after the “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” ranges, which seem suspended mid-air. Incidentally, these mountains inspired James Cameron to create the surreal word of Pandora.

The creators are confident the suspension bridge could be named the longest and tallest glass-bottomed bridge in the world. The bridge is the brainchild of Tel Aviv-based architecture, Haim Dotan, who first shared conceptual artwork that showcased a glass-bottomed bridge that didn’t obstruct the view of those who dared cross it, BBC had reported. Speaking about the bridge, Dotan had said,

“I believe in nature, harmony, balance and beauty. Nature is beautiful as is. The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge was designed to be invisible as possible — a white bridge disappearing into the clouds.”

Though the bridge may look dangerous, every aspect during its construction has been carefully considered. Each glass panel is made up of 24 mm thick construction-grade double thick panes weighing over 300 pounds that’s said to be 25 times stronger than your average piece of glass. The ropes holding the suspension bridge are 53 mm in diameter, which can hold lot more weight than what it is designed for.

China Suspension Bridge

Locally dubbed as ‘Hero Bridge’ owing to the heroic daring one needs to muster to cross it, the suspension bridge in China can withstand high winds, earthquakes, frost and the weight of 800 visitors at any given time, though safety protocol hugely restricts the number of people who can cross it at a time. Owing to the design, many who decided to brave it, were found to be turning back or were stuck clinging to the safety railing, reported the Examiner.

Though there have been attempts to offer similar thrilling experiences, this suspension bridge in China is terrifying in all aspects.

ozymandias271:

I think a thing a lot of people don’t get is that… early in your transition, it’s really common to look for Signs. “my digit ratio is masculine!” “I played with dolls as a kid!” “I like science!” “I’m emotional!” “I like wearing dresses a lot!” “my mother dreamed I would be a boy when I was a kid!”

and ofc none of that means shit, but it’s really hard and scary to say “I’m not the gender I was assigned at birth because I don’t want to be

so we look for signs, for validation, for evidence, for proof that it’s Okay, it’s Allowed, we are Really X Deep Down

but the thing is… you don’t have to do things that hurt. You don’t have to be in a body that hurts you. You have the right to not be in pain, because you are a person, and no one can take that away from you. You don’t have to earn your right to not hurt. You don’t have to prove that you deserve to not hurt. You can just… not hurt. It’s okay. It’s allowed.

An Interactive Map That Predicts the Expected Fall Foliage for the Continental United States in 2015

by Glen Tickle
ThePrettiestOne

Yes, yes, you Texans, you Floridians, yes, go to Vermont to see the leaves. Go! You absolutely will not ever at any point in time ever have to deal with wind, or rain, or slush, or rain, or sleet, or rain, or snow, or rain, or snow and rain, or anything unpleasant ever because everyone knows that autumn in New England is always warm, temperate, and dry.

Fall Foliage Prediction Map

Smoky Mountains National Park has released an interactive map that predicts the expected fall foliage for the Continental United States. Users can slide the map to different autumn dates to see when the foliage is expected to peak at its most beautiful in their area. The park released a similar map in 2014 as well.

"Developing the ability to piss other people off (or even to RISK pissing them off) without knuckling..."

ThePrettiestOne

My problem, my personal problem, is that yes, I have a lot of this going on, but I also have the tendency to go WAY too far, and I lack the ability to tell from other people's body language and unspoken whatsits that I've done so. So I'm kind of blind-folded, stumbling between letting myself get hurt and unintentionally hurting other people, and it's really hard to admit that I have difficulty knowing what people are really thinking because saying shit like that opens you up to a) being told some variation of "if you cared about my feelings you would know what you did" and b) being betrayed because I fundamentally cannot tell when someone is lying to me so it's easier to just assume everyone's lying.

Developing the ability to piss other people off (or even to RISK pissing them off) without knuckling under is pretty much the Holy Grail of emotionally abused kids, I think. We are programmed to respond at the first sign of displeasure, and we don’t have the faith in ourselves and our decisions to weather the storm– or even a mild sprinkle– so we tend to freak out as if the world was ending if a cloud crosses the sun. We freak out about the possibility that we’re wrong, that we’re doing the wrong things, that we’re making the wrong choices, that we’ll make someone angry, because there’s this awful certainty lurking at the back of our minds that says “If you do the wrong thing, you will be in TROUBLE.” And being in TROUBLE is the worst thing, ever, because that part of our brain is forever three years old where our parents are our whole world and being in TROUBLE is the end of everything.

It takes a lot of practice to gain that sort of gut-level knowledge that we’re strong enough to handle this stuff and that the world doesn’t end if someone else is angry at us. It’s not an innate quality that some people have and some don’t; people who grow up in non-abusive homes learn it when they’re young, is all, and the rest of us have to learn it when we’re grown up. And it sucks, and it’s not fair, and it’s not fun, but there’s no getting around it, and you can do it, you CAN.

You can piss people off.

You can be wrong.

You can fuck up.

You can do stuff that everyone thinks is weird.

AND IT IS ALL OKAY. The world won’t end. You will still be a good person. And the likelihood is that most of the things you do WON’T be wrong, and WON’T piss people off, and WON’T be up-fuckery, and WON’T be weird, but if it is? The hell with it; fix it, if necessary, and move on.
