Rubio's answer to debate debacle: I meant to do that, and it was the media's fault

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)
ThePrettiestOne

Rubio is the reason "The Manchurian Candidate" never frightened me. For that to work, the human race would have to be a whole lot more competent than we generally are.

Marco Rubio’s message coming out of his disastrous debate performance Saturday night is that he meant to do that and it’s the media’s fault anyone thinks it was a problem. At the debate, Chris Christie slammed Rubio for mechanically repeating the same talking point (“Obama knows what he's doing”), only to have Rubio respond by repeating it again. For a candidate who’s faced criticism that he can’t go deeper than talking points, it was not helpful, and it made headlines. But his campaign has apparently decided that the only way out is through further repetition:

“I’m going to say it again,” Mr. Rubio said in front of a crowd of about 1,000 people who packed a high school cafeteria here, one of his largest New Hampshire audiences. “Barack Obama is the first president, at least in my lifetime, who wants to change the country. Change the country — not fix it. Not fix its problems. He wants to make it a different kind of country.”

If I keep saying it, will you believe it’s just such an important point that it meant something all those times I said it in the debate? The thing is, this is an important talking point for Rubio’s presidential hopes. He’s faced criticism from other Republicans that he is what they paint Obama as being: too inexperienced for the job, a disaster waiting to happen. So Rubio’s oft-repeated answer that Obama isn't screwing up out of inexperience but is a crafty villain who knows just what he’s doing is a crucial answer to the inexperience charge. The debate debacle gave his campaign a choice: keep repeating the same damn thing and hope to convince people that shows it was never a mistake to begin with, or back off and admit Rubio screwed up while leaving him open to the inexperience charge. His advisers have gone with option A, and have added on a little media-blaming. A fundraising email repeats the “Obama is doing it on purpose” claims and then insists that “the media pounced” because “they are desperate to defend Obama’s legacy.”

Actually, Marco, it was Christie who pounced. The media just followed up with a chorus of “whoa, did you see that?” And, anecdotally at least, it gave some New Hampshire voters second thoughts about Rubio, at a time when he’s polling second but polls say that many voters are still open to changing their minds.

A Simple Plan to Start Reading More

2011-150 books read
2012-170 books read
2013-170 books read
2014-170 books read
2015-150 books read
2016-150 books read - goal

Yeah, I don't think I should try to add "read more books" to my goal list.

I love the physical nature of having books up there on the bookshelves, waiting to be looked at, admired, and remembered. I used to really enjoyed the library and I still do. But when I look at my shelves I realize that I own so many books that I haven’t read.

Ted Cruz wants to protect women from all this political correctness and equality and stuff

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)
ThePrettiestOne

Sexism: Men are completely logical and free of emotion, unlike women, and that's why we can't expect men to just not rape women.

Ted Cruz seems to be trying to earn macho points as a defender of fragile womanhood. He would NOT bow to political correctness and draft women into the military, no sirree.

"I'm the father of two little girls, and I love those little girls with all my heart," he said. "They are capable of doing anything in their heart's desire. But the idea that their government would forcibly put them in a foxhole with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them doesn't make any sense at all. It's yet one more sign of this politically correct world where we forget common sense. We gotta get back to a president who just says, 'No, that doesn't make any sense.'"

Is it just me, or does the way he phrased “put them in a foxhole with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them” sound like Cruz is slamming the men of the American military? But sexism, not poor phrasing, was the point here. Cruz’s girls can do anything in their heart’s desire, but moving forward to where women are treated equally on the lousy stuff as well as the fun stuff would be bad and wrong. And we’re not supposed to notice that positions like “my girls are too fragile to do that difficult, dangerous thing” aren’t just used to protect women from the draft, they’re used to hold women back from desirable jobs and equal treatment across the board.

Mostly, though: Ted Cruz, man. Posturing posturing posturing. Political correctness! My precious campaign props! Common sense!

Constance Wu: 'Diversity...doesn’t Mean We Want the White People to Write Asian Stories'

Constance Wu: 'Diversity...doesn’t Mean We Want the White People to Write Asian Stories':

“Speaking to guest host Guy Branum about the kind of roles she’d like to pursue, given how limiting mainstream entertainment can be for Asian-American actresses, Wu said:

I want to support uniquely Asian-American stories. I don’t want to just play the hostage in some big studio movie. If I get that, that’s great. But if it coincides with an opportunity about the Asian-American experience that pays me, like, a quarter of the salary, I’d rather do that.

As for what kind of changes she hopes the industry will make as far as diversity and representation are concerned, Wu told Branum:

[Diversity] doesn’t mean we want the white people to write Asian stories. What I want is to foster the Asian-American writers and directors and producers and actors…foster their stories to come into the spotlight a little bit.”

I LOVE Constance Wu in FOTB, she just slays in that role.

"Sanders is not a socialist. He is a “democratic socialist.” That one word makes for a..."

“Sanders is not a socialist. He is a “democratic socialist.” That one word makes for a world of difference. Sanders favors private ownership and markets, but with rules that protect little people from abuses and uncertainties.

Survey after poll after focus group shows that substantial majorities of Republicans support much of the Sanders economic plan. Many of those Republicans currently support Donald Trump, with his vague promises to stick it to the rich, improve the lot of working class Americans and protect Social Security.

So what are those Americans who support Sanders’ policies but not Sanders missing? Why don’t they understand the huge differences between socialism and democratic socialism?

One issue is the disconnect between what politicians promise and what they could deliver. Sanders would need to win in a sweep election that gave Democrats strong majorities in Congress to get his policies enacted into law.

But there’s a deeper issue with how we engage with our elections. You don’t have to be a Sanders supporter to recognize that America’s political reporters are good at covering the horse race, but terrible at explaining policies of the candidates.

One reason for that flaw is that viewers, and the voters among them, often want personality rather than substance. While there are insightful articles about policy proposals, they don’t resonate. Think about a song so it plays in your mind. Now try to recall anything written by a music critic. Same problem with politics: We recall the rhyme; the reason, not so much.

Compounding this is the terrible job our education system does teaching young people about economic and political philosophies, to distinguish between the -isms. I’ve learned that you can have a more informed conversation about politics and economics with the average waiter or petty merchant in Europe or Canada than with the executive sitting next to you on a domestic flight.

So let’s go back to square one and explain what Sanders is and is not.”

The only important thing that happened during the Dem debate.

He is garbage.

but but but the 1%!!!!!!

Ok hold on, I actually just read the article and it actually seems the people who said “oh he’s garbage” or whatever didn’t actually read what they reblogged.

His plan involves increasing taxes, yes, but he’s also planning to do away with private insurance premiums. You’re actually saving money via that plan, so ultimately better off financially. Put simply, private insurance premium going away means all that money back in your pocket. Then, you pay SOME of that money to taxes. Taxes go up, BUT you’re paying less than you’d have paid the private company. So yes, you’d be paying more taxes, but in total your expenses go down by thousands.

Read the things you reblog, dammit.

Uhhhh

You literally admitted he says he wants to increase taxes.

oh boo hoo, you pay a little bit more in taxes. how else do people expect shit to get done? -_-

… Really?

oh no my taxes are going to be more

and people nationwide will stop suffering from lack of healthcare

and maybe ending poverty will take a step in the right direction

and maybe private insurance companies will stop gouging people

and hey I’ll actually have a net positive after all this since it saves me money in the long run

and hey maybe we’ll be on par with every other 1st world country on the planet

and hey maybe parents will call the hospital when their kids are sick instead of waiting it out because their insurance rates are too much for them to afford

but

oh no my taxes are going to be more

Same rhetoric as obamacare. Premiums are up, coverage is down, but hey. At least everyone….no wait.

Government run healthcare is the biggest croc of idiocy alive today. Medicare, medicaid, obamacare, all failures. All dying. But juuuuuust one more right? This time it will work!

so what r ur opinions on minecraft?

So… The NHS…

Guys, Sanders is asking for a 2.2% health care tax hike to cover health care costs. If your household is earning $70k a year, that’s $1,540 a year in extra taxes.

There will also be a payroll tax levied on employers of 6.7%. Assuming the entire cost is passed on to workers (and I guarantee you it won’t be - customers will also pick up part of the tab), that’s an extra $4,690, bringing the total to $6,230 a year.

Obamacare average household premiums were about $16,800 in 2015, and are still rising. That’s at least 2.7 times higher than the tax hike (a highly conservative estimate), and will probably be higher as health care costs continue to rise.

You will not need to pay for premiums in a single payer system. You’re literally saving over thousands of dollars a year if you’re a middle class citizen, and even more if you’re a working class citizen.

There are plenty of other examples of nations that have implemented a single payer system, and their citizens are paying significantly less than Americans.

Do your research before complaining about taxes.

reblogging for hard numbers

Reblogging for hard numbers. This is what George Carlin meant when he said that the owners of our country don’t want an educated populace - they want people just smart enough to do the shit work, and just dumb enough not to know how badly they’re being screwed over compared with the rest of the civilized world. Everyone who whined “but TAXES” and “he is GARBAGE” is a living example of how this plan is working out for the owners of our society, the 1%.

tldr: You pay 2% more in taxes but save $1000’s a year in insurance premium. You will pay $0 for insurance premiums.

I am Italian, born and raised in Italy, and now live in the US.

I can guarantee you that GOVERNMENT SUBSIDED HEALTH CARE WORKS EVERY FUCKING WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

My dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2005. He had four major surgeries, chemo, radio, hospital stays, constant check ups. From then till the day he passed away in 2011 (after a three week hospital stay) we paid MAYBE about a grand? or two? shit I can’t even remember it was SO FUCKING LITTLE.

I dont know how the fuck anyone can expect a society to work without paying taxes, nor I do understand why taxes are a-okay when they fund COLOSSAL MILITARY SPENDING, drones, wars, or MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN BAILOUT FOR WALL STREET, but you suddenly have a problem when it’s about BETTERING THE GODDAMN COUNTRY.

Sanders: “I’m a socialist”

people: “alright”

Sanders: “I want to pay for healthcare with taxes”

people: “haha gotcha what an ideological traitor!”

See, here’s a thing.

Pay more taxes.  Get more stuff from a government that can afford to buy stuff, make stuff, and y’know, provide medical care to the people of their nation.

While you’re at it, a well medically supplied and healthy population turns out to be right useful for productivity (sick days down, medical problems less disasterous, people willing to get preventative care because it’s affordable), standards of living goes up, discretionary income becomes available, wealth flows through the economy, people who have jobs buy things rather than fearfully squirrelling away limited resources to pay for possible or current or past medical bills…

All sorts of interesting things happen when taxes go up and money flows through the economy rather than stagnating whilst people literally have to select possible personal death or permanent financial ruin for their family.

Taxes. Quite useful. You should try paying more of them.

Marco Rubio is no moderate

by rss@dailykos.com (Jon Perr)

In the years before he became legendary for delivering the thirstiest State of the Union response ever, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was peddling another legend. On his path to becoming speaker of the Florida House, Rubio often told Sunshine State audiences he was "the son of exiles" forced to flee their beloved island of Cuba after the "thug" Fidel Castro took power. As it turned out, Rubio's parents didn't come to America to escape terror and persecution from the Castro regime after it toppled dictator Fulgencio Battista in 1959. Instead, they arrived in 1956 as immigrants seeking opportunity, not exiles running for their lives.

Now, a new myth—Marco the Moderate—is enveloping the 2016 White House hopeful in the wake of his surprisingly strong third-place showing in last week's Iowa Caucus. "In doing so," Politico's Glenn Thrush gushed, "he established himself as (in the eyes of many party elders and himself) the Republican with the most potential crossover appeal in a general election." After weeks of growing panic about Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, David Brooks rejoiced that "the amazing surge for Marco Rubio shows that the Republican electorate has not gone collectively insane." Rubio, Reuters declared, "emerged as the champion of the battered Republican establishment," and made a strong case that "supporters of other moderate, establishment candidates such as former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Ohio governor John Kasich should throw their support, and their money, behind him."

As it turns out, there's only one problem with the Marco the Moderate Myth: It simply isn't true.

As a quick glance at his past record and proposals for the future shows, Marco Rubio is a reactionary ideologue whose extremism has only increased during his short tenure in the Senate. A man who now opposes access to abortion even in cases of rape and incest, Sen. Rubio also followed John McCain's well-worn path in condemning his own immigration reform bill. A one-man wrecking ball who single-handedly cost hundreds of thousands of Americans their health insurance plans, the ersatz moderate is a reckless foreign policy adventurer committed to sabotaging the nuclear deal with Iran and dramatically increasing U.S. defense spending. And at a time of record income inequality, President Rubio would take on trillions in new debt to deliver a massive tax cut windfall for the wealthy. Nevertheless, Mr. Moderate is demanding a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, even as he refuses to raise the debt ceiling.

So when Marco Rubio asks "are you ready for a New American Century?" he apparently means the 15th century. Consider, for example, his views on abortion.
