THINGS NOT TO SAY TO A PERSON WITH OCD:

ThePrettiestOne

OCD is not one of my issues, but my head is arranged so that OCD is, like, the next house over, so I can into the yard, and maybe into the big picture window every now and then, and seriously, that shit is HARD to live with.

"Get over it": Ok this is litterally the most degrading thing you could ever say to someone ever. It doesnt matter if they have a disorder or not, dont say this to people.
"Just dont follow through with the urges!": Haahahah if we could we would. Most of us are in therapy or are in need of therapy to learn how to do this because our brains cant process it. We follow through with these urges because if we dont, our head tells us we are either in danger or something will go wrong. Trust us, we want to stop the urges, we dont want them, and for some of us its easier to ignore them while for others its not.
"Your disorder makes my life/your families life/your friends life miserable": Yeah thanks for your input. It makes my life miserable too. :/
"Your wasting all our resources!" (For obsessive hand washers, clothing washers or bathers): We know its excessive, but looming this over our heads doesnt help us get better. So, instead of worrying about that, how about you try to walk us through our urges and help us see why its excessive instead of telling us how we are such a waste.
PEOPLE WITH OCD WANT TO GET BETTER. WE NEED THERAPY TO GET BETTER. WE DONT WANT THESE URGES. TELLING US TO GET OVER IT OR THAT WE ARE A WASTE DOESNT HELP US GET BETTER. HELP US THROUGH OUR URGES, TALK TO US, HELP DISTRACT US FROM THE URGES. PLEASE.

lullabyknell:

Do you guys think the fanboy upset over Rey being a lead in the new Star Wars stuff would have been as bad if Finn was white? Because I think The Force Awakens was Finn’s movie just as much as it was Rey’s.

He has a lot of story and screen time, transforming from just running for his life to taking on the First Order to get Rey back and taking up a lightsaber to fight Kylo Ren for her. And don’t tell me that’s not a big deal because he saw Kylo Ren kill people (Jakku attack, Han, etc) and was probably terrified of him, but he choose to fight anyway.

Finn decided to run, to defect, to fight, to protect - he’s the Stormtrooper who choose to do the right thing. Finn drove a lot of the story. Finn is a super important character. He might not be a Jedi, but there are a lot of excellent arguments about why he’s probably Force-sensitive and there’s space for him to become one. And even if he never becomes a Jedi, Finn was supposed to be a First Order officer and the Resistance picked up a potential general. Finn is the only reason the Resistance managed to destroy Starkiller in time, without him they would have been screwed. He’s capable and a fast learner and seems to have terrible luck in battle situations, and he saved the goddamn day. Go Finn.

Yes, Rey seems to be the main character of the new Star Wars trilogy and she’s going to be a Jedi and that’s great, but Finn was definitely a main character of TFA too. And having a black male lead who was allowed to be as empathetic and caring and anxious as Finn? That’s huge and fantastic and I’m so happy that Star Wars has heroes like Rey and Finn now.

So, it’s just like, these fake geek boys got their male lead in Star Wars, and his name is Finn. Now I’m left to wonder why these whining fanboys couldn’t relate to the male lead they were given. He was right there through the clear majority of the movie, with story and development and screen time, and he’s an excellent and inspiration hero.

But I guess there was just something about him that made him seem like a sidekick, huh? A sideline character? Goodness gracious, I wonder what.

Flint—bottled water is okay for drinking, but a shower?

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)

For the people of Flint, trucked in bottles can provide a temporary source of drinking water. However, water is for more than drinking.

Near the top of the daily challenges that Flint residents face in a city without safe drinking water is how and where to shower.

Families are going to extraordinary lengths to find places where they can bathe without fear, taking measures that many say add to the upheaval that has been part of their lives since state officials confirmed last fall that their water was contaminated with dangerous levels of lead.

If you’ve ever been through an extended outage, you quickly learn that being without safe water intrudes into your life constantly. Can you make coffee? Wash the dishes? Clean the counters? Wash your clothes? Water the garden? Mop the floor?

When brushing your teeth involves dragging in a bottle of water to damp your toothbrush, it brings home how even the simplest things are tied to the idea that we can turn on the tap and receive clean, safe water.

Those who have not found an alternative to bathing with Flint water are limiting their use of it — dashing into and out of the shower once a week with their mouths tightly shut. Others wash only with baby wipes — or, if they can, wait to bathe at the homes of friends or relatives outside Flint.

Officials have indicated that bathing in Flint’s lead-laced water is mostly safe. Unless you ingest the water, the levels of lead associated with bathing should be very low. On the other hand, people living in Flint don’t exactly have a good reason to believe officials.

hacksign:

the funniest part of the buzzfeed thing was the “how did watermelon become black people’s thing lol!” because that stereotype was literally created by whites after slavery ended because black people were finding ways to support themselves and one of the prominent ways was selling watermelon. So the watermelon became a sign of freedom and hope and in order to crush and humiliate the black people selling/eating/growing the watermelon, whites flipped it and turned into a representation of black people’s perceived laziness, childishness, uncleanliness and so forth. but yeah lol! that’s how it became a “black person thing”

Following up on this post:

Have you ever heard of “time poverty?” – here’s why it’s the biggest issue preventing gender equality

“Across the globe, women spend about 4.5 hours a day on unpaid labor, such as child care and household chores. For men, that figure drops in half.

That’s according to data cited by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which identified the issue of time poverty as a central focus in an annual letter released by its wealthy benefactors. In poor countries, the unpaid labor gap grows. Women in India, for example, spend an estimated six hours a day on unpaid labor. Men there spend just an hour on such chores.

The expectations affect a woman’s ability to work outside the home.

“She doesn’t even get out of the house in that situation. She is trapped in that home,” Melinda Gates told Refinery29 during a round table interview earlier this year. “So she doesn’t even get to go to the market, or participate in a job.“

nixxie-fic:

Sesame Street has a fun new character in Zari, a six-year-old Afghan girl who is making her television debut this year.

The puppet will feature on a local production of Sesame Street called Baghch-e-Simsim, and was created to encourage female empowerment.

‘Zari is female because we thought it was really important to emphasise the fact that a little girl could do as much as everybody else. So that’s why a girl was a key factor in promoting empowerment and girls’ education in Afghanistan,’ Zari wears a traditional headscarf and dress which showcases the fabrics and designs of Afghanistan’s diverse ethnic groups. The Sesame Street puppet was devised by the teamwork of two production houses and Afghanistan’s education ministry. OK, so, if you're saying that you're a rapist, and you can't help yourself, maybe you should just check yourself into jail for us? kthnxbai

Storey told the Crimson that forcing the Porcellian to accept women, as some other final clubs already have, would make sexual assaults more likely. After all, women can’t be sexually assaulted if they aren’t there.

“Given our policies, we are mystified as to why the current administration feels that forcing our club to accept female members would reduce the incidence of sexual assault on campus,” Storey wrote. “Forcing single gender organizations to accept members of the opposite sex could potentially increase, not decrease the potential for sexual misconduct. …

For people complaining about "people on welfare with IPhones"

amputeeot:

My boyfriend is Deaf, and despite all his efforts to find a job, for some, oh, REASON… Hearing people have this idea that Deaf people are incapable of working.

He gets SSDI and SNAP, aka “welfare” and…and… and…he owns an iPhone 6+.

I bought that iPhone 6+ for him when his old cell phone plan had a billing issue and got canceled. We ported his number over to my family plan and the iPhone 6+ was basically free. His monthly fee for phone service (which he needs to text his friends and use VRS to call businesses) was reduced due to this.

So next time you think about complaining about the lazy guy on welfare with an iPhone 6+…

1: STOP. You don’t know their situation.
2: STOP. You should not be policing what people own while they receive public assistance like that in the first place. Unless they own, for instance, a million-dollar company - then maybe. But random person on the street with an iPhone, or a functional vehicle, or a PlayStation? No.

“Rey is given a luxury that comes so easily to male heroes – she simply turns a corner, finds a magical item (Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber, no less) and it awakens the Force in her. Just that. No searing infertility, no rape, no revelation of past abuse, no heartbreak, no sacrifice. No heroine who’s validity is defined by what she has sacrificed, in the way of Katniss handing up her life for her sister, becoming a martyr for a revolution. In the way of Ariel, handing over her power to speak in order to walk on land. No poison apple, no needle on a spinning wheel here.”

Black Girls Rock: Twin Dancers Are Accepted to American Ballet Theatre’s Prestigious Summer Program

Twin sisters Nia and Imani Lindsay have been accepted into the prestigious American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) Summer Program on scholarship. The young girls have been walking since 8 months and have been dancing ever since. At 10-years old the two are trained in jazz, ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, and tap dance. They are also fluent in English, Spanish and French.

While they reside in Canada they made a trip to New York City to audition for ABT’s Summer Intensive program and found time to sit down with Cipriana of Urban Bush Babes to discuss their big news, bullying, their beautiful natural hair and why they love Misty Copeland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ply4Rjz_UZM

"Your recent memory probably unfolds like this: Reagan fucked everything up, shit continued poorly..."

ThePrettiestOne

I'm much more into Clinton than I am the "howling sampler box of Dunning-Kruger that is the current GOP field," as Mr. Scalzi put it, but these points are well-taken.

“Your recent memory probably unfolds like this: Reagan fucked everything up, shit continued poorly under Bush I, Clinton comes to town and things improve- the country is doing damn well, in many respects, Bush II comes and… yikes. Obama strides in, makes some notable improvements but R’s stymie him mostly.

All the while, your financial situation is more or less OK. Not good. But for most people, life continues OK. Things were good in the 90’s. The Clinton’s were good. Bush really fucked up (big time). And now things are a little better again.

I get why you think Clinton is a good candidate.

Here’s our experience:

We grow up. Bush is the first president we can remember. Everyone says he is awful. I don’t really know anything at my young age but this was more or less ingrained in me via my family and environs. My personal family experienced severe poverty before, during, and after Bush. In that regard we’re a little different than normal but from observing peers I know the general story. As stated above, things were tough under Bush particularly in ‘08, obviously. Things slightly improved for some since. But now we’re at the age that we’re on our own. We never lived through the relatively “good” years of Clinton. Instead, what we see with a Clinton president, is: The Crime Bill, NAFTA, WTO, DLC, no action on climate change, welfare reform, deregulation (especially of wall street), and general corporate-friendliness.  Those are not good things. We have no inclination towards the good ole days cause we didn’t experience them. Instead we’re living the repercussions of those good ole days: financial instability, climate chaos, oligarchy.

We live in a world in which the minimum wage is a starvation wage. A world in which student debt is fucking crippling. YOU DIDN’T HAVE DEBT LIKE WE DO, THIS IS FUCKING STUPID. ALL OF OUR LIVES, YOU- THE ADULTS OF THE WORLD- TOLD US TO GET AN EDUCATION AND NOW WHAT?  That education is CRIPPLING US. So many young people = fucked by student debt. Yeah, it’s a pretty big issue. We live in a world in which there are no jobs anyways so fuck it, we can’t even find work to pay our debt cause trade deals let corporations say “Peace out!” Most scaring, we live in a world in which the climate is on the brink of collapse. I will have to deal with your sins. THANKS.

Thankfully, in part because of our experience, many in “this generation” are inclined towards militant activism: Occupy, climate warriors, and BlackLivesMatter. All our lives we’ve been told how important it is for us to be involved. We’re getting involved. And what is the response from the “establishment?”

No.”

-

Please just listen. A view at 22.

I don’t want to quote the whole thing, but the whole thing is worth reading, and it may help Gen X and Boomers understand why liberal Millennials just aren’t that into Hillary Clinton.

Obama to forgive the student debt of permanently disabled people

Obama to forgive the student debt of permanently disabled people:

By law, anyone with a severe disability is eligible to have the government discharge their federal student loans. The administration took steps four years ago to make the process easier by letting people who are totally and permanently disabled use their Social Security designation to apply for a discharge, but few took advantage. The Department of Education is now taking it upon itself to identify eligible borrowers and guide them through the steps to discharge their loans.

“Too many eligible borrowers were falling through the cracks, unaware they were eligible for relief,” said Education Under Secretary Ted Mitchell in a statement. “Americans with disabilities have a right to student loan relief. And we need to make it easier, not harder, for them to receive the benefits they are due.”

korrasera:

reywallker:

like, is it good to have a female lead in rogue one as opposed to a male one? of course! but that doesn’t mean that you can ignore the fact that she’s white, and that women of color get almost no lead roles, and every time a white female lead comes on the scene, women of color have to sit and listen to this whole “baby steps (: (: (: sweetie” bullshit rhetoric that people spout and are told to “wait their turn” and whatnot and that’s so gross shut up

This. There’s no such thing as baby steps when it comes to representation. If you silence someone who’s asking for representation, no matter how polite you think you are, you are part of the problem. More lead roles for black women. More lead roles for women of color. More respect for women of color all around.
