Feds Arrest 61 For Alleged Indian Call Center Scam That Bilked Millions From Consumers

by Ashlee Kieler
ThePrettiestOne

I have to admit, I'm almost disappointed that nobody tried this on me. The most I ever get is some dude on the other line saying "Hello, I am calling about computer. You will give computer password now..."

Earlier this month, police in India detained hundreds of employees in three different call centers for allegedly proliferating a scam that involved calling unsuspecting consumers masquerading as employees with the Internal Revenue Service and threatening to arrest if the person didn’t pay up. This week, federal authorities in the U.S. followed up on the case, ending a three-year investigation by arresting dozens of people in the U.S. and India for allegedly scamming tens of thousands of consumers out of millions of dollars through the sophisticated call center scheme.

The Department of Justice, along with several other state and federal agencies, announced the joint enforcement effort Thursday, unsealing an indictment that charged a total of 61 people and entities for their alleged involvement in the transnational criminal organization.

According to the indictment [PDF] — which covers 20 individuals in the U.S. and 32 people and five call centers in India — since about 2012 the defendants used information obtained from data brokers and other sources to call potential victims impersonating officers from the IRS or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

To give the calls an air of authenticity, the organization was able to “spoof” phone numbers, making the calls appear to have really come from a federal agency. The callers would then allegedly threaten potential victims with arrest, imprisonment, fines, or deportation if they did not pay supposed taxes or penalties to the government.

In instances when the victims agreed to pay, the DOJ claims that the call centers would instruct them to go to banks or ATMs to withdraw money, use the funds to purchase prepaid stored value cards from retail stores, and then provide the unique serial number to the caller.

At this point, the operations U.S.-based counterparts would use the serial numbers to transfer the funds to prepaid reloadable cards. The cards would then be used to purchase money orders that were transferred into U.S. bank accounts of individuals or businesses.

To make matters worse, the indictment claims that the prepaid debit cards were often registered using personal information of thousands of identity theft victims, and the wire transfers were directed by the organizations using fake names and fraudulent identifications.

The operation would then use “hawalas” — a system in which money is transferred internationally outside of the formal banking system — to direct the pilfered funds to accounts belonging to U.S.-based individuals.

In one specific case, the indictment claims that a victim in Hayward, CA, lost as much as $136,000 after receiving multiple calls from a supposed IRS agent demanding payment for tax violations over a 20-day period.

During the call, the victim was directed to purchase 276 stored value cards that were transferred by the schemers to reloadable prepaid cards.

In addition to impersonating IRS and immigration agents, the DOJ claims that the operators also dabbled in other schemes, offering customers small short-term loans or advise them that they were eligible for grants.

Once a target showed interest in the financial product, the conspirators would request a good-faith deposit to show the victims’ ability to pay back the loan, or payment of a fee to process the grant. The victims of the alleged scam never received any money after making the requested payment, according to the indictment.

Thursday’s indictment and arrests come less than a month after authorities in India were tipped off by a disgruntled call center employee that the centers in question were calling American phone numbers, claiming to be from the IRS and telling their victims that they had defaulted on their tax debt and must now pay. That call resulted in nearly 770 people being detained — about 70 that were actually charged and 630 “listed accused but not arrested yet.”

Police in the city of Thane said at the time that the call centers were bringing in anywhere from $150,000 to $225,000 each day, and that the operators of this scam brought in around $75 million in a little more than a year.

chasertiff:

chasertiff:

James and Lily have been dating for a couple months. It’s like their fifth fight and Lily cannot believe James and she says “are you–” but she catches herself and knows better than to say “serious” because he will make a joke about Sirius so she quick edits to “are you kidding” and he says, without paying attention “he’s Sirius, I’m james” and then he realizes his mistake and he’s not sure if he wants to marry her for knowing him so well or breakup with her because she doesn’t appreciate his puns

In their seventh fight James is pissed to high heaven at Lily for missing his Quidditch match which he did awesome at and yeah she feels a little guilty but she can’t help it that she’s a prefect and if a third year girl is crying and needs a walk to the infirmary lily is gonna help her and James says “you chose a 13-year-old girl over me? Are you serious rn?”

And without missing a beat lily says “he’s Sirius, I’m lily.”

And the entire common room goes quiet like everyone in a fucking dead hush and sirius, years later, tells the story at their wedding as “that was the moment I gave James my blessing to propose”

I'm not a Megyn Kelly fan, or even a Megyn Kelly respector, but I have to admire her cool in an interview in which she one of the vanguards of the movement she's spent so long defending proves that her support has meant nothing to them, which she ends with the line "You can take your anger issues and spend time working on them."

thetrippytrip:

So proud of you for this. Nobody else stepping up is the reason we as women get scared when dealing with strange men. Because she like this be happening and nobody wants to say anything and even when somebody does the attacker usually gets hosyile for not getting what they want. That shit is scary. And you know a black man is in more danger for getting involved than a white man. Because of our fucked up society - if he had been a white man that defended himself against a child predator, he would never have been cuffed. To the men out there, please do something if you see something, it is never wrong to stand up for a child who may not have a voice to speak for themselves.

Every Halloween This One-Legged Guy Makes A Halloween Costume. He Just Revealed His Newest Idea

by Giedrė

Josh Sundquist was diagnosed with cancer when he was nine years old, and was told he had a 50% chance of surviving. He lost his left leg, despite chemotherapy, but by thirteen he was cancer-free, and by sixteen, he was ski-racing. Now, Sundquist is a motivational speaker that’s become famous on social media for his clever, amputation-incorporating Halloween costumes.

“I’ve always dealt with the social discomfort of my disability by having a sense of humor,” Sundquist explains. “But now I’m more comfortable with who I am and what I look like, and I guess with these Halloween costumes you could even say that I celebrate what makes me different. Which may be either weird or refreshing, depending on your perspective.” He explains the inspiration for his costumes below:

Black Lives Matter activists endorse Hillary Clinton for president

by rss@dailykos.com (Thandisizwe Chimurenga)

DeRay McKesson, the activist who rose to prominence as an on-the-ground observer of the Ferguson Rebellion, co-founder of the data, strategy and policy platform called Campaign Zero, and former Baltimore mayoral candidate, has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president of the United States. On Oct. 26, McKesson wrote in the Washington Post that:

When Clinton started this campaign, she didn’t appear to understand the urgency of the need to address racism. When I first met with her in October 2015, she had not yet released comprehensive policy positions dealing with racial justice. She seemed slow to grasp why it was important to act with comprehensive proposed solutions.

The unrest and activism over the last two years has undoubtedly pushed Clinton, specifically on key issues that she and other Democrats otherwise would not have addressed as forcefully as the party’s platform does: private prisons, an increased minimum wage, the role of institutional and implicit bias in sustaining unjust systems and acknowledging the need to address racism directly, to name a few.

Clinton’s platform on racial justice is strong: It is informed by the policy failings of the past and is a vision for where we need to go.

McKesson’s comrade Brittany Packnett, a co-founder of Campaign Zero, also endorsed Clinton. Speaking with Melissa Harris-Perry in Elle Magazine last week, Packnett said her endorsement was “personal, not institutional:”

Ultimately, I arrived at two points simultaneously. First, Secretary Clinton can protect the important, though imperfect, steps taken by the Obama administration to improve equity in criminal justice, education, and health care. And second, I am completely fed up with Donald Trump's candidacy. It is not a joke. The policies he is proposing on issues like immigration, health care, and Supreme Court appointments truly are deeply worrisome and dangerous. Once I realized both of these things, I knew I couldn't look at myself in the mirror if I didn't stand up and do what I could do now to encourage young people to vote in this election.

Add your name: I am ready to make phone calls from home with MoveOn to defeat Donald Trump and the Republican Senate Majority.

Newt Gingrich Refuses to Discuss His Attack on Megyn Kelly

by David Corn

On Tuesday night, Newt Gingrich, the Republican who was forced to resign as House speaker in the late '90s and who now is a top Donald Trump surrogate, got into a row with Fox News host Megyn Kelly. Toward the end of a segment on the presidential election, the often combative Gingrich started grousing about the media paying too much attention to all the women who have accused Trump of sexual assault (after a video emerged of Trump bragging about committing sexual assault). Kelly defended the media's handling of this story: "We have to cover that story, sir." What about a Hillary Clinton speech in which she referred to open borders? Gingrich retorted. "That is worth covering," Kelly said.

Gingrich then angrily exploded: "Do you want to go back to the tapes of your shows recently? You are fascinated with sex and you don't care about public policy. That's what I get out of watching you tonight." Kelly shot back: "I am not fascinated by sex. But I am fascinated by the protection of women." Gingrich became irate and dared Kelly to say "Bill Clinton" and "sexual predator." She did not take the bait, and shortly after that, Kelly said goodbye to Gingrich and asked him to "spend some time" working on his "anger issues."

The exchange blew up Twitter and was the talk of the politerati. On Wednesday morning, as Trump was holding an event in Washington, DC, to promote his new hotel, with Gingrich one of the few notable GOPers in attendance, he congratulated Gingrich for tangling with Kelly (with whom Trump once feuded).

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony in the hotel lobby, Mother Jones asked Gingrich about his emotional face-off with Kelly. "Do you really think that Megyn Kelly was overly fascinated with sex by asking about [the sexual-assault accusations regarding Trump]?" we inquired. Waving his hand, Gingrich replied, "I'm not going to talk about that."

We followed up: "But given that you guys impeached a president" about a matter involving sex—Gingrich interrupted, "It speaks for itself. It speaks for itself." He and his (third) wife then walked away to eat lunch at the hotel restaurant.
