It’s so gross and hypocritical to frame food waste as a personal failing. Like, people are dying of hunger because someone forgot some leftovers at the back of their fridge and ended up throwing them away. Major chain grocery stores throw away millions of pounds of food because it’s “too much work” to donate it, and then poison it and destroy it when they throw it away to punish dumpster diving. 

Waste is not a personal failing. It’s engineered by corporations, and they profit off of obscuring that.   

Much like water waste - shaming a dripping bathroom faucet for wasting water, while hundreds of gallons get wasted in industrial settings.

Always be suspicious of micro-focused framing of environmental issues, when there’s the possibility of macro-level issues hiding behind them.

Abolishing abortion is not the end goal.

The end goal is that every human being has equal protection under the law.

Truly ending abortion means switching our thinking. We are not out to restrict or ban something. We are fighting to protect vulnerable human beings from the systematic violation of their basic rights, not just to life, but to be treated as a human being under the law.

If the law says you cannot kill someone, the preborn need to count as “someone.”

When we accomplish that, we will end abortion in America.

You will never.

Ever.

EVER. End abortion. Ever. It will literally never happen. All that will happen if you get your way is that thousands of scared, desperate people will die. Don’t try to tell us you want equal protection for everyone when you clearly don’t give a shit about what will happen if abortion is abolished.

Pregnant people will die or seriously injure themselves attempting to preform DIY abortions, doctors will go to prison for helping them, parents mourning miscarriages will be investigated like criminals, maybe even thrown in prison, doctors will be afraid to help pregnant people who have complications, pregnant people will die after being denied proper treatment for misscarriges, etc, etc.

That is what you are advocating for, OP.

So, you want to end abortions…. Let’s pretend for just a second that there is NEVER a medically necessary abortion ever, that there are NO people out there who will need to end a wanted pregnancy to save their own lives and possibly even continue parenting already born children, because there IS and there ARE, but let’s just pretend!

If you want to end abortion then what we need to do is institute on going age appropriate factual medically accurate inclusive comprehensive education regarding sex, sexuality, gender identity/expression, reproduction and birth control. Also a total end to slut shaming, a TOTAL END.

If you want to end abortion what we need to do is set up a system where birth control options are easily accessed and affordable to everyone across the board. I’m talking from basic condoms to tubal ligation and vasectomies. ALL THE OPTIONS. This would prevent unwanted and unintended pregnancies.

If you want to end abortion we need to develop the support structure for families. Paid parental leave for all jobs, for both parents. Affordable, reliable, regulated child care options that extend into the evenings and nights because not all parents can find jobs during “normal working hours”. Increased access to affordable, dependable, nutritious food. Affordable housing options.

But all of that is us just pretending that MEDICAL REASONS FOR AN ABORTION aren’t a thing that exists. Because if you say “well, they just shouldn’t have sex”, then you’re a cruel excuse for a human being … and this is coming from a sex-indifferent asexual.

But you know what? Absolutely NONE of that matters, because if a pregnant person doesn’t want to be pregnant they have the right to abort. Doesn’t matter what the reason for the abortion is, people who can get pregnant are the only people who can decide if they, personally as individuals, want to be pregnant.

TL;DR: We can’t, on a practical, realistic level, end abortion. You’d only prevent SAFE abortions, and if you aren’t the one who’s pregnant then mind your own business.

Folks often rag on TVTropes and its various imitators for being cliquish and badly organised, but I’m inclined to think their real crime is the work they’ve done to popularise the notion of “subverting” tropes - i.e., the notion that if you want to defy a trope, all you need to do is identify its most salient features, then do the exact opposite.

This idea has wormed its way into a great deal of online media analysis, particularly when it comes to discussion of racism and sexism in media; how often do you see a book or a film roundly praised for “subverting” this or that problematic trope?

The trouble is, that doesn’t actually work.

Most of the time, the exact opposite of a sexist or racist trope is merely another sexist or racist trope.

It’s insidious like that.

Coming off last week’s news that Peter Capaldi will leave Doctor Who by the end of this year, we stumbled across this bittersweet animation from 2015, in which all of New Who‘s Doctors run through time and space. Artist Adrianna Ojrzanowska makes the most of her simple medium (paper and pen) to show the recurring themes in the series—that is, the aforementioned running from page to page. But the end of each page also signals a regeneration, and/or the loss of a companion.

Maybe it’s the Coldplay song, or the fact that the new series’ handful of regenerations have hit us in all the feels, but this short video very effectively shows the transition from Nine to Ten to Eleven to Twelve. (No War Doctor, though?)

There’s a lovely old English myth that if someone who truely loved and trusted the werewolf called it by name that it would turn back to human.
