so i googled casey affleck to find out more about the sexual assault allegations against him, and i was a little stunned when these three news articles popped up. i think i was expecting to see a bunch of boilerplate Casey Affleck Wins An Oscar articles, but instead this is happening. on a day that should be the best day of this guy’s life, a total victory lap, the press is reopening the sexual assault allegations against him, giving them serious scrutiny - and it’s all because brie larson decided not to clap. one very small but very visible act of protest, and suddenly he is not the headline - his criminal misogyny is.

and in an industry that constantly, consistently forces women to sit down and shut up, an industry that allows rapists and child molestors to continue working and winning awards with impunity, this all feels pretty monolithic. go brie.

Peele is giving us the social commentary horror film GET OUT. If you did not hear about it yet, you will. In “Get Out,” a young black man (Daniel Kaluuya) finds himself in a very messed up situation —actually a massive understatement — when he goes out to the country to visit his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) family. We won’t give anything else away, but if you’ve seen the trailer, you can get a hint of how Peele created a unique chiller that explores real ideas and attitudes about race, some of them quite ugly.

But he won’t be done with that movie, apparently.. more are coming.

But this is far from a one-and-done for Peele. He recently told Business Insider that “Get Out” is the first in a collection of movies he wants to direct that examine what he calls “social demons.”

“I have four other social thrillers that I want to unveil in the next decade,” Peele told Business Insider. “The best and scariest monsters in the world are human beings and what we are capable of especially when we get together. I’ve been working on these premises about these different social demons, these innately human monsters that are woven into the fabric of how we think and how we interact, and each one of my movies is going to be about a different one of these social demons.”

Peele’s examination of race and alienation in “Get Out” is an impressive, confident directorial debut. We can’t wait to see what he will throw at us next, though we’re also pretty afraid.

Sen. Marco Rubio won’t participate in town hall meetings because he says political activists will crash them to create a media spectacle of people who “heckle and scream at me in front of cameras.”

“They are not town halls anymore,” the Florida Republican told CBS4-Miami’s Jim DeFede on Sunday. “What these groups really want is for me to schedule a public forum, they then organize three, four, five, six hundred liberal activists in the two counties or wherever I am in the state.”

Citing protesting tips published by the new Indivisible movement, Rubio told the station that activists are instructed to go to town halls early and “take up all the front seats. They spread themselves out. They ask questions. They all cheer when the questions are asked. They are instructed to boo no matter what answer I give. They are instructed to interrupt me if I go too long and start chanting things. Then, at the end, they are also told not to give up their microphone when they ask questions. It’s all in writing in this Indivisible document.”

While Rubio has avoided town halls, fellow Republicans in Florida and around the nation have shown up at public forums and taken the heat. Some Republicans have refused, with Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert invoking the 2011 shooting of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, a Democrat.

“I was shot on a Saturday morning. By Monday morning my offices were open to the public,” Giffords said on Twitter. “To the politicians who have abandoned their civic obligations, I say this: Have some courage. Face your constituents. Hold town halls.”

The red-bearded vulture.

The bearded vulture, or lammergeier, lives on a steady diet of bones (more specifically the marrow) and dyes its own feathers blood red.

Bearded vultures come in various shades, from pure white to orange-red. Soils stained with iron oxide give the birds their fiery appearance. Lammergeiers apply the dirt with their claws and then preen for about an hour to ensure a bright orange/red glow. They are also attracted to other red things, like leaves and red wood. Captive birds also partake in this behavior, which suggests the activity is instinctual, not learned.

The soil doesn’t have any practical purposes; it certainly doesn’t make for good camouflage (though the birds have no natural predators anyway). Scientists have noticed that the birds’ age and size are directly correlated to the intensity of color. It is theorized that the hue is a status symbol. More soiled feathers indicates that the lammergeier had the time and resources to find an adequate place to bathe; the brightest-colored vultures should have the most territory and knowledge of their surroundings. Interestingly, these baths are done in secret, so most of the information gathered has been through spying on captive birds.

Bearded Vultures are most commonly monogamous, and breed once a year. Sometimes, especially in certain areas of Spain and France, bachelor lammergeiers will join a pre-existing couple to create a polyandrous trio. Females accept secondary mates because it increases the chances of producing offspring and doubles her protection. The birds usually don’t lay more than three eggs, so they can use all the help they can get.

These giant birds can grow up to 4 feet tall. They have a wingspan between 7 and 9 feet and usually weigh around 10 to 15 pounds.

In other words, this bird is awesome and I love it forever.

People talk a lot about how Harry Potter taught them about friendship and bravery and love overcoming evil etc and of course I think that’s very important but like…

Harry Potter also taught an entire generation of kids that the news media can’t always be trusted to tell the truth, that the government can often be corrupt or incompetent, that the legal system isn’t always right, that the people in power don’t always have your best interests at heart. That bad things sometimes happen to good people, that your heroes aren’t always as perfect as you think they are, that even those with the best intentions can be wrong, that everyone can make mistakes and that often in order to make things right it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice.

…and I think in a way that’s every bit as important as the more positive messages.
