A big failure mode – maybe the biggest – is punishing people for suffering.

You see someone suffering, you feel like you ought to help, but you don’t want to help, and therefore you are compelled to insist that they’re not suffering, or punish them for making you feel guilty, or paint them as a villain.

Examples include laws that outlaw being homeless in public, outlaw doing things that primarily poor people need to do to survive, make it hard for abused children to emancipate themselves, etc. 

Also, social norms that make it okay to be mean to people just for being unhappy or lonely or frustrated in your presence.

In my book it’s not necessarily obligatory to help every suffering person.  But it is important to not punish them out of spite.  If you’re not going to help, at least don’t harm.  This is hard for me sometimes, but it’s important. You have to be okay with somebody being upset or unfortunate in your presence; like, “yes, you’re unhappy, and there’s no way I’m going to fix that (either I can’t or I’m not willing to), but I’m not going to add to the problem by being mean to you.”

I’m working on this.  If someone has a problem I’m not going to fix, just think “Okay.” Not “fuck you for having a problem at me.”  Not “How dare you obligate me to help you.”  Just… “Okay.” And don’t make it worse.

not to make one of those ‘uwu imagine disabled mermaids’ kind of posts, but pls consider a Humans Are Baffling Space Orcs scenario where autistic people are highly sought after because they can actually EXPLAIN what the other humans are up to in ways that aren’t an opaque, frustrating ‘that’s normal for us!’ they’re used to studying and codifying the abstruse and irrational nuances of human social systems in order to reproduce those behaviors effectively, and there’s a lot more of them than the much more expensive professionally educated humanthropologists.

So cuttlefish have some kind of rudimentary(?) language that has a gestural component. Or, if you don’t want to call it language, they communicate with each other, in part, through gesturing with their arms. (Not sure how a consistent system of signs isn’t a language but I’m not a linguist).

Anyway, there is a tank of cuttlefish at the New England aquarium. Usually, the animals totally ignore the visitors. Once when I was there with a friend, the cuttlefish were signing to each other. My friend held his hand up to the glass and began to imitate their gestures with his fingers, and then made a sequence of random signs. 

The cuttlefish became extremely agitated and signed furiously at him and rapidly flashed different colors, and we will never know what he accidentally said to them. 

The moral of this story is actually that it’s fucked up how we keep sentient and sensitive beings in a weird little fish jail. 

After knowing a few different swan families for two years, we learned some of the sign language they use for “Hello friend! (You know me)” and “Sorry.” Their vocalizations are a little difficult to mimic, but “Hello friend!” and “sorry” are gestures done with the head. There’s also “Hey! Hey! (come start a fight)” which, in a human, involves hands and arms.

You can actually get into a feedback loop saying “Hello friend” to friendly swans that actually know you, where you say it and then they get excited and say it back, and then you say it again and they feel like they have to respond. And if you meet a strange swan and they behave aggressively towards you, you can get them to calm down and even say “sorry” by telling them that you know them. This is often easy to lie to them about, since swans think all humans look very similar. 

Anyway! It is extremely funny because when humans walking outside encounter a swan, the humans often say “Hey! Hey!” in Swan, and when the swan puffs up and says “Excuse me?” the human says “Come start a fight!” and the swan, particularly if it’s defending a nest, is like “Fine. Okay. I’ll end this.”

And then the human complains that swans are awfully Hostile and Aggressive.

/linguist mode on/ sticking my nose in briefly to say that a consistent system of signs used for communication is definitely a language /linguist mode off/

The fat-hate society teaches gets so ingrained in such frustrating ways. Yeah yeah “just love yourself!”, easier said than done. ESPECIALLY if that fat appeared due to illness. I find myself wishing the thyroid would fuck up in the OTHER direction for a while so I could drop like 50lbs. I shouldn’t ever be wishing that. I should be wishing for HEALTH and instead I’m sitting here going “I’m sick but I wish I was sick in the way that made me prettier” and that’s just… fucked up

United CEO Oscar Munoz said that passenger David Dao was “disruptive and belligerent” when he was told that he was going to be kicked off the plane after he bought a ticket and too his seat. But this newly released video shows Dao to be quite calm and reasonable given the circumstances. In the end, Dao was beaten senseless, his nose was broken, teeth were knocked out, and he suffered a concussion. United filled the empty seat with one of its employees.
