180 Degrees from Average. 51 Degrees, A New Luxury Home Development In the Swiss Alps.

by laura sweet

51 Degrees is the first and finest resort residence in the world to offer indoor/outdoor thermal spas (supplied directly from Leukerbad’s thermal springs) in each of its 30 private homes.

The pioneering residential development is nestled in the small town of Leukerbad, its backdrop the incredible Canton of Valais. The homes on the property were designed by architect Michael Graves with interior design by Marc Michaels, and are surrounded by magical views of mountains and secret passes, wildlife and clear blue skies.

Ultimately, what makes the residences at 51 Degrees so extraordinary is what makes Leukerbad itself extraordinary: the water. Each residence at 51 Degrees has its own dedicated, unlimited supply of Leukerbad’s thermal waters, with their ideal profile of minerals designed to help restore aching muscles and organs, and revivify the careworn spirit.

The resort buildings of 51 Degrees are designed as a series of inter-connected 5-story wings: two housing 53 condominiums and the others housing a 72-key boutique hotel and a 20,000 square-foot luxury spa on the lower level. In addition to the hotel restaurant, the resort includes a semi-detached pavilion for a restaurant to be operated by a signature chef.

The guest quarters are organized along a single-loaded corridor facing the back of the site, allowing views toward the central court and swimming pools within the resort and the Alps beyond. The buildings are clad in local stone with timber detailing characteristic of the region, creating a destination that uniquely suits its stunning natural and built context.

Organic Architecture:
Spacious, slate-roofed structures of stone and timber designed by the renowned architect Michael Graves are reminiscent of Switzerland’s iconic chalets and rise from a base of boulders into staggered, private, four-story homes.

above: renderings from Michael Graves & Associates

The residences incorporate wood beams and glass, encircled with private terraces and balconies which open onto the three great surrounding mountains, the Daubenhorn, the Balmhorn and the Torrenthorn.

Each is equipped with indoor/outdoor fireplaces, wrap around terraces, private elevators, folding glass walls, Gaggenau appliances, private heated parking and decorated with the most luxurious materials including bronze, wool, leather, and rustic wood.

Three Different Sample Floor Plans:

Careful thought has gone into each residence, the floor-plans ensuring that maximum use is made of both the light and spectacular views surrounding the homes. Each apartment will feature a wrap around balcony, enticing the mountains into your living space day and night.

Included in or around the development are a Residents Club, branded boutiques, a wine bar, a game room, a restaurant and lounge by The Ginza Project, a fitness studio, a ski valet, The Banya Experience Spa and Children's Club.

Holi 2013: The Festival of Colors

This week Hindus around the world celebrated Holi, the Festival of Colors. Holi is a popular springtime celebration observed on the last full moon of the lunar month. Participants traditionally throw bright, vibrant powders at friends and strangers alike as they celebrate the arrival of spring, commemorate Krishna's pranks, and allow each other a momentary freedom -- a chance to drop their inhibitions and simply play and dance. Gathered here are images of this year's Holi festival from across India. [34 photos]

Eyescream And Friends. A Uniquely Branded Creative Dessert Experience.

by laura sweet

Eyescream and Friends launched in Barcelona last fall (September of 2012) and brings more than yummy tasting ice cream and sweets to its customers, it brings them a unique eating experience. From the same folks behind the clever Happy Pills Candy Boutique, Eyescream and Friends is a completely integrated creative project.

Everything from the initial strategy, graphic design and marketing materials to the store interior, industrial design, packaging and signage are all part of the self-serve dessert experience.

CHARACTERS
Cute little monster characters were developed to represent each of the flavors and appear on the business cards, exterior and interior signage:

THE PRODUCT
The 'eyescream', which is imported from Taiwan, is essentially gelato, frozen at -25º C in cylindrical cubes, which is then placed in a special machine which shaves it. The final result is a silky and smooth texture of eyescream.

Each eyescream order comes with 2 sugar candy "eyes" and two toppings:

FLAVORS:
• Cheesecake
• Vanilla
• Chocolate
• Yoghurt
• Wildberry Yoghurt
• Strawberry
• Mango

They also have Sorbets for those who are lactose-intollerant in Strawberry, Mango, and Watermelon flavors.

TOPPINGS:

You can choose 2 toppings to combine with your favorite eyescream. The toppings are a large variety of delicious syrups which combine nicely to enhance any of the eyescream flavors:
• Chocolate
• Condensed Milk
• Dulce de Leche
• Passion Fruit
• Strawberry
• Mango
• Kiwi
• Honeydew Melon

PACKAGING
Each serving is presented in smart eco-friendly packaging that functions as a plate to hold the eyescream and two toppings.

THE STORE

They built wooden low cost boxes for self-service, concentrating all the consumer experience. A fragmented facade, constructed from a large sign with "legs" has the ability to break down into a number of signs, when open to the public. One for external identity and another, when opened, works as informative product menu.

The bottled water served in the store, Tears of Joy, was also designed by Estudio m:

Verizon and AT&T rumored to consider acquiring Vodafone assets, valuing the entity at quarter trilllion dollars

by Élyse Betters

vodafone-Logo

AT&T and Verizon could soon jointly bid to acquire Vodafone.

Vodafone is second only to China Mobile for the world’s largest mobile telecommunications companies due to 439 million subscribers and high revenues in December 2011.

CNET reported the deal would value Vodafone at $245 billion, if signed. For reference purposes: Verizon’s market cap is now at $142.09 billion, and AT&T sits at 205.88 billion.

The deal would also allow Verizon to acquire Vodafone’s 45 percent stake in U.S. operations. AT&T would then acquire the remaining business outside of the U.S.

The Financial Times, which cited “usually reliable people,” noted both U.S. carriers feel comfortable sharing the risk associated with such a huge deal and further believe it will pass any regulatory obstacles.

Facebook CEO Zuckerberg on Google relationship: ‘Few bridges, but we are aligned with their open philosophy’

by Élyse Betters

Screen_Shot_2013-04-04_at_2.33.26_PM_large_verge_medium_landscape

Facebook introduced the HTC First with Home for Android today, and now CEO Mark Zuckerberg is doing the press rounds and discussing everything from “Facebook phone,” building for Android, Google’s reaction to Home, and even why iOS was left in the dark.

During the unveiling event, Zuckerberg described building Home for Android as “smooth,” because the platform is open and does not require any Google intervention, where as Home for iOS would require a direct partnership with Apple.

In a wide-ranging interview at Wired.com this afternoon, Zuckerberg gave a more detailed explanation on why Facebook launched Home for Android phones instead of iOS, as well as why the company ditched the idea of building a phone directly:

Why not just build a phone?
I’ve always been very clear that I don’t think that’s the right strategy. We’re a community of a billion-plus people, and the best-selling phones—apart from the iPhone—can sell 10, 20 million. If we did build a phone, we’d only reach 1 or 2 percent of our users. That doesn’t do anything awesome for us. We wanted to turn as many phones as possible into “Facebook phones.” That’s what Facebook Home is.

It’s only available on Android phones. Isn’t it ironic that your mobile strategy is now tied to Google’s operating system?
“We have a pretty good partnership with Apple, but they want to own the whole experience themselves. There aren’t a lot of bridges between us and Google, but we are aligned with their open philosophy.”

So do you think in, say, two years you will have this on the iPhone?
“That’s above my pay grade to be able to answer that.”

That’s a pretty high pay grade.
“Look, I would love for that answer to be yes. Facebook is in a very different place than Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and Microsoft. We are trying to build a community. We have a billion folks using our services now, and we want to get to 3 or 5 billion one day. We’re going to do that by building the best experience across all devices. Android is growing quickly, and we’re excited that the platform is open and that it allows us to build these great experiences. I think that this is really good for Google too. Something like this could encourage a lot of people to get Android phones, because I think people really care about Facebook. In a lot of ways, this is one of the best Facebook experiences that you can get. Of course, a lot of people also love iPhones—I love mine, and I would like to be able to deliver Facebook Home there as well.”

Zuckerberg also talked with Fortune.com today about Google’s reaction to Home and what it’s like working with Apple:

On what Google will think of Facebook’s use of the open Android platform:
“I’m not sure how they’re going to react.”

On working with Apple:
“They really control the operating system… Android is different because it’s a much more open platform.”

On Google vs. Apple in mobile:
“I think that Google has this opportunity in the next year or two to start doing the things that are way better than what can be done on iPhone through the openness of their platform. We’d love to offer this on iPhone and we just can’t today. And we will work with Apple to do the best experience that we can within what they want, but I think that a lot of people who really like Facebook–and just judging from the numbers, people are spending a fifth of their time in phones on Facebook, that’s a lot of people. This could really tip things in that direction. We’ll have to see how it plays out.”

3D Drawings That Jump Off The Page

by Vurdlak

I could’ve sworn I already covered Ramon Bruin’s hyperrealistic pencil drawings at some point in the past, when our fan Melanie contacted me and pointed this was not the case. As said earlier, artist Ramon Bruin is taking hyperrealistic drawings to a whole new dimension – The third dimension, to be more precise! Ramon who is a Dutch illustrator, creates realistic 3D renderings of snakes, birds, and all sort of creepy creatures using nothing but a pencil, paper and his own imagination. Those impressive cartoons you see below seem to jump off the paper right at you! The technique in use is once again #Anamorphosis.

3D Drawings That Jump Off The Page

Bruin uses a technique called anamorphosis, which involves drawing a detailed but distorted image that appears like a 3D scene when viewed from a certain angle – The New York Daily News

3D Drawings That Jump Off The Page

To add a bit of drama, Ramon inserts hands, pencils and other props into the photographs of his illustrations, effectively improving the 3D effect.

3D Drawings That Jump Off The Page
Check out the gallery below for more of Bruin’s cartoon creations. Be sure to let us know what you think of his 3D art, and which particular drawing you liked the most!
