Robert De Niro 'strict about cocktails'

by russiansledges
Russian Sledges

that is not a martini

According to New York Post, the specifications were given to staff at a party last week just in case Robert made an appearance. “Robert De Niro’s cocktail request," read the official cocktail brief given to staff at the Tribeca Film Festival party held at New York's DL Rooftop venue. "Bob likes gin martinis. For those, we’ll need gin, cucumbers and stemmed martini glasses. The key is just to have chilled stemmed martini glasses. The bartender should muddle a cucumber in the shaker and then mix with ice and gin. He or she should then SHAKE like crazy, an extra 30-45 seconds past the way they teach you in bartending school, so that little frothy chips form.” Equally stern instructions explained what staff should not do when making the star's drink. Once the frothy chips were formed, bartenders should ensure just the right amount of liquid fills Robert's glass. “No vermouth necessary,” they were instructed. “Don’t fill the glass all the way, only 2/3s at most so he doesn’t spill or it doesn’t get warm in his hand. You can garnish with a cucumber slice as well.”

Music: Newswire: Amanda Palmer wants to help Morrissey start a Kickstarter, get on Twitter

by Marah Eakin

In a surprisingly rational move on her part, Amanda Palmer has suggested that Morrissey use Kickstarter to fund his next record. Said record hasn’t found a label yet—definitely not because Morrissey is a control freak who's impossible to work with—so, in an open letter published by Salon, Palmer urged the ex-Smith go the crowdfunding route. She also encouraged him to get on Twitter.

In the letter, Palmer surmised that if 500,000 people pre-bought Morrissey’s new record for $5 measly dollars (which would never happen, because Morrissey wouldn’t let himself be devalued like that), the crooner would make a cool $2.5 million. Palmer also pointed out that Moz would own all the material and could choose whether or not to tour, something that might be important to him given his recent health troubles.

Always willing to lend a helping hand, Palmer offered her ...

Poll: Most Mass. Residents Back Shutdown Of Area For Marathon Manhunt

by WBUR Newsroom

BOSTON — A strong majority of Massachusetts residents agree with the decision to lock down the Boston area during the search for one of the suspected Boston Marathon bombers, according to a new poll.

The poll, from MassINC, finds that 91 percent of residents support authorities’ decision to implement a “shelter in place” request and halt MBTA service during the manhunt.

The survey of 500 residents was conducted April 23 to April 27, and its margin of error is 4.4 percentage points.

The poll also finds that respondents are more concerned about public safety than the potential for restrictions on civil liberties.

The MassINC Polling Group’s president, Steve Koczela, told WBUR residents might not be concerned about intrusions on civil liberties because the bombings were so recent.

“It just happened so it’s near to them in both space and time, and this number could potentially change in a year or two,” he said, “but right here right now, given what’s just happened, people’s concerns are really that the government won’t go far enough, rather than that they’ll go too far.”

mildly-lively:

This spring when I visited Frankfurt I was surprised to see that the British store Primark had come to Germany, and that it was apparently the hottest new thing. Nearly every youth who passed me was carrying a huge primark bag, and when I ventured inside myself it was so crowded I could barely move around. Basically I find this hilarious. Although Primark is nice because its cheap and has some good stuff, its definitely not the first place people in England will shop at because the quality is really terrible…XD I wonder when the Germans will catch on?

I remember H&M was the same when it first opened in NYC.

Lesbian Daughter and Mother Spar Over Wedding Invitations - NYTimes.com

by russiansledges
Dear Civil Behavior: I’ve been helping my daughter plan her wedding to her girlfriend and everything’s been going fine — until now. We’re about to address the invitations. The calligrapher is lined up and time is getting a bit short. Here’s the problem. My daughter insists on addressing the women with what I’d call a feminist version of their names. In other words, instead of writing “Mr. and Mrs. Richard Garcia” she wants to write: “Ms. Jane Garcia and Mr. Richard Garcia,” calling out the identity of the woman separately from her husband. I’ve explained that this is incorrect etiquette and that my friends will be confused if not offended. But she won’t listen to me. Tardis: ripe for regeneration? | Media Monkey

by Monkey

It's usually the Doctors who regenerate, but it looks like the Tardis may be making a return to the UK's high streets. The Daily Mail (and most of the other papers) report that thinktank Policy Exchange has called for the blue boxes, which were phased out in the 60s, to be brought back to save money and improve service to the public. It says: "These would be technologically enabled police contact points, featuring two-way audiovisual technology so the public could communicate directly with the police." But could hapless PCs go in and suddenly find themselves on Metebelis 3?

Ban on Many Italian Pork Products to Be Relaxed - NYTimes.com

by russiansledges
On Friday, the department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services announced that an in-country assessment had determined that four regions and two provinces of Italy are free of swine vesicular disease, a dangerous communicable ailment that infects pigs, and that “the importation of pork or pork products from these areas presents a low risk.” Some pork importers and producers welcomed the changes, saying they would allow more Italian cured-pork products to make their way to American tables. But many were unable to judge the scope of the ruling because the Inspection Services did not specify what standards would now have to be met by Italian producers, nor the expense of meeting them. The agency did not immediately provide more details about its decision.

‘You Cannot Copy High Quality’

by John Gruber

Interesting piece for Fast Company by Danielle Sacks, on Mickey Drexler and Jenna Lyons’s leadership at J. Crew:

After two days of reviewing the entire product line, Drexler told Lyons to get on a plane to Hong Kong and design new pieces to fill all the holes. He also asked her where she wanted to source the company’s cashmere. A more expensive mill, she said. He told her to call them. This move marked the beginning of Drexler’s turnaround strategy — a bet on quality. “You cannot copy high quality, and it takes a long time to get a reputation for quality,” he says. Lyons credits this first encounter as both formative and telling of their future together. “Honestly, I think it was because I didn’t bullshit him,” says Lyons. “His bullshit-dar is insane.”

No surprise that Drexler sits on Apple’s board of directors.

Black Radishes? - Home Cooking - Chowhound

by russiansledges

not bad

I have a fantastic recipe for black radishes. My mother went ape shit when she saw them at the farmers market as she said in russia these are used all the time and she has never seen them here. I was skeptical but when I tried this salad it was fantastic. These black radishes are bigger in size and the bigger ones are easier to peel. My mother would peel the black skin off. In a bowl, grate the radishes, chop or mince green scallion, grate a carrot and dice fresh cucumber...mix together with sour cream (not mayo). If you want more of a spicy tang then less carrot and cucumber, if its too spicy then more carrot and cucumber. She uses this salad as a side dish, on bread and crackers too as an appetizer.

The Midwest

by russiansledges
Russian Sledges

I have been yelled at for calling idaho part of 'the midwest' rather than 'the west'

The American Midwest has no obvious boundaries; it is, at best, a collection of ill-defined ideals about landscape, labor, and culture that vaguely invoke the westward march of U.S. expansion in the nineteenth century. Unlike, say, the editors of Wikipedia, I have no interest in trying to legislate one true geography. Instead, this map takes a much messier approach. After using Google to find 100 different maps of the Midwest (with a preference for those with some official organizational status), I simply overlaid them all. The result is not a map of the Midwest as we might imagine it to be; it is instead a map of the Midwest as a complex and fragmented administrative category.

Super Mario Crossover upgrades to version 3.0

by Mike Suszek

If you've forgotten about Super Mario Bros. Crossover, allow us to refresh your memories. Developed by Exploding Rabbit, Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a browser-based game that allows players to run and jump their way through Super Mario Bros. using a variety of characters from other game properties. In celebration of the crossover game's third anniversary, Exploding Rabbit decided it's time to unveil version 3.0 of the game in a new trailer.

Of the newer updates to Super Mario Bros. Crossover, the game's new levels stand out. Taken from one of Mario's more obscure appearances, Super Mario Bros. Special, the landscape of the levels changes with the game's difficulty settings. The game also received new skins, including ones inspired by the Castlevania series and Super Mario Bros. 2.

Exploding Rabbit raised $53,509 on Kickstarter in June 2012 to fund the development of its original platformer, Super Retro Squad.

[Thanks, Jay!]

Ron Paul: Boston shutdown during manhunt ‘should frighten us as much or more than the attack itself’

Former Representative Ron Paul says that Americans should perhaps be even more frightened by the police response to the Boston Marathon bombings than the explosions -- which killed three and injured scores more -- themselves. In an article called “Liberty Was Also Attacked in Boston,” the former Republican congressman and two-time presidential candidate compares the hunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to “scenes from a military coup in a far off banana republic.”
