Bad Wasteful Coffee Machine for Lazy People No Longer Popular

by Hamilton Nolan

Sales of Keurig push-button coffee makers plunged last quarter, and the company’s stock price is plunging too. Is the “bad coffee at high prices plus wanton waste generation” formula breaking down? Or what?

Odyssey: Otherworldly Macro Footage of Ink, Oil and Soap Shot by Ruslan Khasanov

by Christopher Jobson
Russian Sledges

via firehose ("ban this sick filth")

Several years ago, Russian graphic designer Ruslan Khasanov was cooking with oil and soy sauce when he stopped to appreciate the strange relationship between the two fluids as the pooled and mixed in unexpected ways. The observation lead to his creation of Pacific Light, a sort of experimental music video meets science project that captures the up-close interactions of ink, oil, and soap. Khasanov just released a follow-up video—now with glitter!—called Odyssey. Music by Ilya Beshevli.

How Some Men Fake an 80-Hour Workweek, and Why It Matters - NYTimes.com

by russiansledges
Some 31 percent of the men and 11 percent of the women whose records Ms. Reid examined managed to achieve the benefits of a more moderate work schedule without explicitly asking for it. They made an effort to line up clients who were local, reducing the need for travel. When they skipped work to spend time with their children or spouse, they didn’t call attention to it. One team on which several members had small children agreed among themselves to cover for one another so that everyone could have more flexible hours. [...] What is fascinating about the firm Ms. Reid studied is that these people, who in her terminology were “passing” as workaholics, received performance reviews that were as strong as their hyper-ambitious colleagues. For people who were good at faking it, there was no real damage done by their lighter workloads.

Newswire: Fulfilling its destiny, the Rushmore soundtrack is coming out on vinyl

by Marah Eakin
Russian Sledges

via firehose

Get ready to sell off that Chad & Jeremy record you bought just for “A Summer Song”—the Rushmore soundtrack is finally coming out as an LP. This will be the record’s first ever vinyl pressing, something that seems a little silly considering the soundtrack to another, lesser Wes Anderson project, The Darjeeling Limited, is already out on vinyl. The news of the Rushmore release comes courtesy of web store Elusive Disc, which already has a pre-order page up for the record. Supposedly out July 10, the Rushmore LP will retail for $24.99 and include 20 tracks, including The Faces’ “Ooh La La,” John Lennon’s “Oh Yoko!,” and “Edward Appleby (In Memoriam).”

Oh No They Didn't! - CDN Musician/Friend of Jian Ghomeshi, Owen Pallett issues a comment

by russiansledges
Jian is my friend. I have appeared twice on Q. But there is no grey area here. Three women have been beaten by Jian Ghomeshi. I have sat with Jian over drinks and discussed our respective anxiety disorders. We have been photographed hugging on camera. Just ten days ago, I helped him find musicians for his father’s funeral. Three women have said that Jian beat them without their consent. [...] Jian Ghomeshi is my friend, and Jian Ghomeshi beats women. How our friendship will continue remains to be seen.

One Woman Photographed Manhattan's Bodegas to Document Them Before They Vanish

Photographer Gail Victoria Braddock Quagliata walked every block in Manhattan in search of every last bodega, hoping to snap each one before they’re replaced by 7-11s and luxury condos. According to Hyperallergic, Quagliata began the project while searching for the iconic and elusive Anthora coffee cup. She got acquainted with different bodegas in different neighborhoods and became fascinated with the quirks of each one. So between December 2012 and August 2013, she photographed all 1,900 or so. Even in that short time, she saw many close up. So Quagliata’s project became a tribute to a vital and vanishing part of Manhattan street life. “Losing this anchor, replacing it with something safely homogeneous and starkly corporate, steals an integral piece of the character that makes your neighborhood unique,” she writes on her website, where many more photos can be found. Keep scrolling for some of the most interesting bodegas.

Stop. Whatever you are doing right now, stop it. Give me your undivided attention. Are you ready for this? (No, you are not.) Cate Blanchett, Our Elfin Goddess of Porcelain Skin, has had many relationships with women. Many relationships with women. I know this because Variety published an interview with her today about her upcoming lesbian-centric film, Carol, which is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt. When the interviewer asked her if this is her first time being a lesbian, Cate Blanchett said, “On film — or in real life?” In real life, duh, Cate Blanchett! “Yes. Many times.”

You heard me: Cate Blanchett has had relationships with women in real life many. times.
