'He said the workers were installing an iron handrail at the rear of 296 Beacon St., the building next to 298 Beacon St. where the fire broke out. Fire officials said there was no fire detail for the job, and it does not appear that a permit was pulled. Zabin said investigators are not in a position to answer questions at this point about how many workers were involved, who they were or whether charges will be brought. He did point out that Massachusetts does not have a negligent homicide law on the books except for one related to motor vehicle fatalities. But he said the DA's office "is taking no position on what the evidence will yield."'

Surprise! Audubon, the Trina's Starlite Lounge's team's new project across the river, is now open in the former Audubon Circle space (in the Audubon Circle neighborhood), just in time for Opening Day at Fenway. Here's the menu, which includes a lot of sandwiches and burgers. The cocktail list includes classics from the nineteenth century as well as more contemporary options, and there are eight beers on draft and twelve in bottles and cans, along with a few wine choices.

Agbogbloshie: the world’s largest e-waste dump – in pictures | Environment | theguardian.com
Discarders of electronic goods expect them to be recycled properly. But almost all such devices contain toxic chemicals which, even if they are recyclable, make it expensive to do so. As a result, illegal dumping has become a lucrative business.
Photographer Kevin McElvaney documents Agbogbloshie, a former wetland in Accra, Ghana, which is home to the world’s largest e-waste dumping site. Boys and young men smash devices to get to the metals, especially copper. Injuries, such as burns, untreated wounds, eye damage, lung and back problems, go hand in hand with chronic nausea, anorexia, debilitating headaches and respiratory problems. Most workers die from cancer in their 20s
852 RARE: Old Books, New Technologies, and “The Human Skin Book” at HLS
Russian Sledgessorry guys
Baaaaaad news for fans of anthropodermic bibliopegy: Recent analyses of a book owned by the HLS Library, long believed but never proven to have been bound in human skin, have conclusively established that the book was bound in sheepskin.
The final page of the book includes an inscription which states,
“The bynding of this booke is all that remains of my dear friende Jonas Wright, who was flayed alive by the Wavuma on the Fourth Day of August, 1632. King Mbesa did give me the book, it being one of poore Jonas chiefe possessions, together with ample of his skin to bynd it. Requiescat in pace.”
Intrigued by this inscription, curators, conservators, and dermatologists have studied the book for years, but results were inconclusive. Thanks to a technique for identifying proteins that was developed in the last twenty years, we recently have been able to answer the question once and for all.
At the request of HLS Library curators and Weissman Preservation Center staff, Daniel Kirby, a conservation scientist at the Harvard University Art Museums’ Straus Center, analyzed the parchment binding of Juan Gutiérrez’ Practicarum quaestionum circa leges regias Hispaniae (Madrid, 1605-1606; HOLLIS no. 4317553). Kirby used a method called peptide mass fingerprinting to analyze nine samples of the front and back covers, binding, and glue. With peptide mass fingerprinting, the samples could readily be differentiated from other parchment sources including cattle, deer, and goat, as well as human skin. The glue was identified as a mixture of cattle and pig collagen.
If Jonas Wright was indeed a sheep, why would someone have written such an inscription? We’ll probably never know. Perhaps before it arrived at HLS in 1946, the book was bound in a different binding at some point in its history. Or perhaps the inscription was simply the product of someone’s macabre imagination.
In any event, we are indebted to Daniel Kirby’s analysis and are glad the question is finally settled. Score one for modern science! The volume (including the sheepskin binding) is being digitized and will be available online via HOLLIS in late 2014.

Open Access Maps at NYPL
Russian Sledges#maps
The Lionel Pincus & Princess Firyal Map Division is very proud to announce the release of more than 20,000 cartographic works as high resolution downloads. We believe these maps have no known US copyright restrictions.* To the extent that some jurisdictions grant NYPL an additional copyright in the digital reproductions of these maps, NYPL is distributing these images under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. The maps can be viewed through the New York Public Library’s Digital Collections page, and downloaded (!), through the Map Warper. First, create an account, then click a map title and go. Here’s a primer and more extended blog post on the warper.
What’s this all mean?
It means you can have the maps, all of them if you want, for free, in high resolution. We’ve scanned them to enable their use in the broadest possible ways by the largest number of people.
Though not required, if you’d like to credit the New York Public Library, please use the following text "From The Lionel Pincus & Princess Firyal Map Division, The New York Public Library.” Doing so helps us track what happens when we release collections like this to the public for free under really relaxed and open terms. We believe our collections inspire all kinds of creativity, innovation and discovery, things the NYPL holds very dear.
A little background on how we got here… We’ve been scanning maps for about 15 years, both as part of the NYPL’s general work but mostly through grant funded projects like the 2001 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funded American Shores: Maps of the MidAtlantic to 1850, the 2004 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funded Building a Globally Distributed Historical Sheet Map Set and the 2010 NEH funded New York City Historical GIS.
Through these projects, we’ve built up a great collection of: 1,100 maps of the Mid-Atlantic United States and cities from the 16th to 19th centuries, mostly drawn from the Lawrence H. Slaughter Collection; a detailed collection of more than 700 topographic maps of the Austro-Hungarian empire created between 1877 and 1914; a collection of 2,800 maps from state, county and city atlases (mostly New York and New Jersey); a huge collection of more than 10,300 maps from property, zoning, topographic, but mostly fire insurance atlases of New York City dating from 1852 to 1922; and an incredibly diverse collection of more than 1,000 maps of New York City, its boroughs and neighborhoods, dating from 1660 to 1922, which detail transportation, vice, real estate development, urban renewal, industrial development and pollution, political geography among many, many other things.
We in the Map Division are all very excited about this release and look forward to seeing these maps in works of art, historical publications, movies, archaeological reports, novels, environmental remediation efforts, urban planning studies and more… Enjoy!

One Million Moms Calls For Christian Boycott Of Noah For Biblical Heresy
Joe, Leading Christians who are faithful to God's biblical account of the story of the flood are giving grave warnings regarding Hollywood's worldly offering of "Noah." Ken Ham writes an eye-opening forewarning that "there is barely a hint of biblical fidelity in this film. It is an unbiblical, pagan film from its start." You can read his entire opinion piece in Time magazine. AFA strongly urges Christians to reject Hollywood's "Noah" and seek truth instead of fiction for these reasons: 1) The Hollywood version is heretical doctrine. Even its producer, avowed atheist Darren Aronofsky, admits his movie is "the least biblical biblical film ever made." 2) Christians and non-Christians will be deceived. It distorts the godly character of Noah. (Noah gets the idea to build the ark from a magic potion, rather than from God.) 3) Noah" was designed to be entertainment, rather than an inspirational film. In short, it's just plain Hollywood. The email closes with a pitch to buy their DVD of a totally factually accurate telling of the Noah fable. The American Family Association only wants five bucks for the DVD, probably because that 30-minute "documentary" has already been posted in full to YouTube. Trailer below.
