Glenn Greenwald Leaves the Guardian To Start His Own Site

by Unknown Lamer
sfcrazy writes "Glenn Greenwald, the thorn in the proverbial back of NSA and its colonial cousin GCHQ, is leaving the Guardian to start his own news organization. Greenwald said 'My partnership with the Guardian has been extremely fruitful and fulfilling: I have high regard for the editors and journalists with whom I worked and am incredibly proud of what we achieved. The decision to leave was not an easy one, but I was presented with a once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity that no journalist could possibly decline. Because this news leaked before we were prepared to announce it, I'm not yet able to provide any details of this momentous new venture, but it will be unveiled very shortly.'"

If the celestial sphere were mapped to the Earth's surface, astronomy would get a LOT easier; you'd just need a magnifying glass.

SMS messages not delivered in multiple places

by jeremias
Our SMS service provider twilio, for some reason, has stopped receiving incoming SMS's altogether this weekend. We are looking for alternate provider ASAP.

Edit: now we have implemented Nexmo, and added couple of numbers. THis should help with the situation.

The Localbitcoins.com SMS numbers are: +15813330250 (CA), +43676800505463 (AT), +442033222117 (GB), +46769436195 (SE), +16466994674 (US)

These are all normal phone numbers, which don't have any special fees attached to them. Sometimes there might be problems delivering the SMS's, in this case you should try a different number.

Partial YouTube Embeds

by Alex Chitu
Let's say you want to embed a long YouTube video, but you only need a short excerpt from that video. The Nexus 7 & Chromecast Press Event video has 64 minutes, but you only want to embed the part about Android stats from 02:50 to 06:28.

Start with the standard embedding code:

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/GbXeZ16FoCY" width="560"></iframe>

Then add the start and end parameters. Both use seconds, so you'll need to convert minutes to seconds. For my example:

* 02:50 = 2 minutes and 50 seconds = 2*60+50 seconds = 170 seconds, so start=170
* 06:28 = 6 minutes and 30 seconds = 6*60+28 seconds = 388 seconds, so end=388.

Here's the final code. You only need to add the underlined text in red:

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/GbXeZ16FoCY?start=170&end=388" width="560"></iframe>

Here's the video embed:

When you click the play button, YouTube will only play the excerpt you've selected. This works for both the Flash player and the HTML5 player. Visitors can always use the seek bar and skip to other part of the video or continue to watch the video.

Gut Microbes Can Split a Species

by timothy
Ron.gross

Neat

sciencehabit writes "The community of microbes in an animal's gut may be enough to turn the creature into a different species. Species usually split when their members become so genetically distinct — usually by living in separate environments that cause them to evolve different adaptations (think finches on different islands) — that they can no longer successfully breed with each other. Now researchers have shown that a couple groups of wasps have become new species not because their DNA has changed, but because the bacteria in their guts have changed — the first example of this type of speciation."
