Apple May Replace Your Broken Fourth-Gen iPad With an iPad Air 2 Where Necessary

by Joe Rossignol
Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers now have the option of replacing a customer's broken fourth-generation iPad with an iPad Air 2, according to an internal memo distributed by Apple last week.

An excerpt of the memo obtained by MacRumors:
Starting March 30, iPad 4th generation whole unit repairs may be substituted to iPad Air 2 models. Apple's repair and order management tool will indicate for each repair if a substitution will take place. Please note the substitute part’s color and capacity to ensure the customer understands what their replacement iPad whole unit will be.
The fourth-generation iPad was released in November 2012, so when a customer needs a replacement model, it's likely easier now for Apple to just give them a newer and more widely available iPad Air 2 in most cases.

Not every broken fourth-generation iPad will be replaced with an iPad Air 2. The decision will ultimately be decided on a case-by-case basis, likely depending upon availability of each tablet in the affected customer's region.

After years waiting for Google Fiber, KC residents get cancellation e-mails

by Jon Brodkin

Some Kansas City residents who have been waiting years for Google Fiber to install service at their homes recently received e-mails canceling their installations, with no word on whether they'll ever get Internet service from the company.

KSHB 41 Action News in Kansas City, Missouri, "spoke to several people, living in different parts of the metro, all who have recently received cancellation e-mails," the station reported last week. "The e-mails do not provide a specific reason for the cancellations. Instead they say the company was 'unable to build our network to connect your home or business at this time.'"

While Google Fiber refuses to say how many installations have been canceled, KSHB said, "there is speculation the number of cancellations in the metro is as high as 2,700."

Michigan Tech's anti-drone drone snatches drones in mid air

by Daniel Cooper

Drones are in the mainstream now, and for every good drone operator, there's a nefarious one looking to do something nasty with theirs. A team of researchers from Michigan Tech is hoping to prevent disasters by building an anti-drone drone that can shoot a net to trap and catch its prey in mid-air. The project, led by Dr. Mo Rastgaar, was born out of the idea that using snipers to shoot drones made no sense if they were carrying harmful substances. For instance, the drone found on the roof of Japan's prime minister back in April 2015 was carrying radioactive material which could have been scattered around the surrounding area.

It's not the first time we've seen a drone with a net, since Tokyo's police is testing an airborne trawler net to take hostile UAVs to safety. France, meanwhile, has crafted a drone that will chase down the rogue pilot to ensure that they're arrested before they can use the device to cause trouble. As drones become more of a public policy issue, expect to see such gear becoming an ever-present element in law enforcement's kit bag. Although, if this net-firing model ever makes it into production, we're secretly excited to see it in action.

Some Rdio staffers will lose their jobs during Pandora takeover

by Daniel Cooper

A few weeks back, we reported that Rdio's collapse was going to hurt Sony, Roku and Shazam -- companies that it still owed money to when it went under. Now, VentureBeat has discovered that 123 of the defunct firm's employees are going to be laid-off between now and the end of the year. The information comes from a WARN disclosure, a legal document that gives the state 60 days notice before a mass-firing, that the company posted to California's employment department. New owner Pandora, meanwhile, has said that it'll offer 100 jobs to Rdio's former employees, mostly in the product engineering and licensing teams.

Update: This post has been updated to reflect that Pandora is not laying off Rdio's employees directly. Rdio has also provided the following statement.

"As is required by law, Rdio issued WARN notices of layoffs to all 123 employees in the United States. Pandora has announced plans to hire approximately 100 of our employees after the bankruptcy court approves the transaction and the deal closes, which means the majority of Rdio employees will continue having jobs."

PSA: Facebook Messenger Shares Your Location with Every Message

by Thorin Klosowski

PSA: Facebook Messenger Shares Your Location with Every Message

You’re probably aware that Facebook collects a ton of information about you, but if you’re using the mobile Messenger app, that also means your location data as well. A new Chrome extension called Marauders Map lets anyone you’ve sent a message see that location information all at once.

By default, the mobile Messenger app logs your location in every message (you can tell if it’s on if the GPS icon next to the text box is blue). Even if you’re not actively choosing to send your location, it’s embedded in the message itself. Open up the Messenger app right now and tap on a message from someone else. There’s a good chance you’ll get a map with the location they send that message from. As the creator of the Marauders Map extension points out, the extension allows you to see all that collected information at once to make it easy to track everywhere they’ve been. Thankfully, it’s easy to turn off this creepy feature:

On Android:

  1. Tap the menu icon > Settings > Location Services
  2. Uncheck the box that enables location services

On iOS:

  1. Head into Settings > Privacy > Location Services
  2. Fine Facebook Messenger on the list and set the location option to off

That should prevent Messenger from sending your location with future messages, but won’t delete old location info, so keep that in mind. If someone used the extension mentioned above, they’d still be able to track your previous locations pretty easily.
