China’s Guinness world record complex

by Annie Lee

As if having the world’s biggest population is not good enough, China continues with the obsession of producing “miracles” and applying for Guinness World Records. Until 2011, China has already held 454 Guinness world records, which made it the 7th most Guinness record holding country in the world. While there are some truly amazing records in the book, many others are simply vain attempts for attention. A game of shrill: the cricket fighting business in China

by Annie Lee

900x600_A4N7RN013R710001

Spain has bullfighting, Americas has cockfighting, over here in China we have equally if not more heavily invested cricket fighting. The age old sport has been celebrated in China for over a thousand years, punctuated only by the Cultural Revolution(1966-1976). Today it is still widely played throughout the country. In fact, cricket fighting has become one of the pillar industries in Ningyang, Shandong Province, generating over 10 million RMB transaction revenue annually. From catching, selling to training and fighting, cricket fighting is a full bloomed gaming business filled with emotional and financial thrills.

Among Ningyang crickets, the ones from Sidian Town are renowned for high winning rate and thus favored even by the Emperor. According to China Cricket Association, Sidian Town boosts calcareous brown soil with the right PH value for growing grain crops, making it the biggest cricket market in North China. In Sidian Town, almost every household is involved in the cricket business ranging from cricket catching, selling to opening hotels for cricket buyers from all over the country.

900x600_A4MO40R13R710001

August announces the high season for cricket transaction. Farmers in Sidian Town are ready to act – more than 80% of them participate in catching cricket. 51 years old Li Xiangui has been catching crickets for over 20 years. If he is diligent enough, he can pocket more than 10,000 RMB (about 1600 USD) just in August. The most skillful household can make up to 100,000 RMB.

900x600_A4MO3ULR3R710001

The responsibility is well distributed – men catch cricket at night, women sell them during the day. In this cricket market of Sidian Town, mid-aged women dominate the seller stands.

900x600_A4MO44K03R710001

Buyers can come from all corners of the country, but people from Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province seem to be more passionate with the bug. Take Hangzhou City as an example, when Ningyang cricket arrive at Hangzhou market, the price can be double or more.

900x600_A4MO47HD3R710001

Children here are also enthusiastic about cricket fighting. The boy is describing to his friend how sharp his cricket’s teeth are.

900x600_A4MO3VG13R710001

If you think cricket fighting is just for farmers and retires, think again. According to Hangzhou Cricket Association, 3 of its 270 members are presidents of listed companies, and more than 10 are millionaires. As you can see from the photo, luxury cars are not uncommon in the cricket market.

900x600_A4N7RNMD3R710001

In the cricket market, buyers come here and rent a stand to receive farmers with crickets to sell. In the morning, it is usually seller market, buyers approach farmers as soon as he step in the market; but in the afternoon, the tide changes to buyer market.

900x600_A4MO487J3R710001

Cricket buying is also a technical job where professional equipments apply. For instance, the electronic scale is to detail the weight of each purchase, since crickets can only fight opponents in the same weight range.

900x600_A4MPQQUN3R710001

Depending on its size and quality, a cricket’s price can vary from a few yuan to couple of thousands. Rumor has it that Sidian Town once sold a cricket for 300,000 RMB (about 4800 USD). The one in the photo was sold for 360 RMB (about 58 USD)

900x600_A4MO3T6D3R710001

32-year-old Di Shuge has been in the business for 15 years. Starting from catching to today’s collecting and selling, he is a beloved frequent of Sidian Cricket Market. Many farmers present him their best catch. Di Shuge runs a farming workshop in his hometown Dezhou City, during cricket season he would come to Sidian Town to buy cricket and sell them back to Dezhou. Each year he can expect to make 30,000-50,000 RMB broking crickets.

900x600_A4MO45713R710001

Back to his hotel, Di Shuge immediately open the box to check on his recent conquer. He says if he didn’t come to the town for crickets, he couldn’t have slept nor eaten with ease. “Feels like something’s missing” Says the cricket broker.

900x600_A4MO43P03R710001

Every August and September, Shanghai will increase its long distance coaches to benefit the cricket tourists. Inside the coach are full of boxes of crickets. Sidian Town opens a new way of getting rich for its township as well as residents around. It seems that the media’s urge to protect the decreasing crickets are powerless in the face of market economy and people’s desire for wealth.

900x600_A4MO3RO43R710001

Man Guozhi is a truck driver and a senior cricket player with 40 years of experience. Man Guozhi’s home has plenty of china cricket jugs. The photo in his hand is his once favorite general “Red Teeth”, winning him the champion title of the 2004 cricket fighting competition.

900x600_A4MO3QV53R710001

In preparing his fighters for the competition, Man Guozhi pays good attention to the feeding and training process. Cricket feeds is a delicate mixture of bean powder, skim milk, liver powder, grains and fish powder etc. The cricket’s living environment is also important, he makes sure the temperature is kept at 25 degree, humid but no water accumulated, and 12 hours exposure to sunlight. Some people even hire professional cricket keeper to maintain their fighters before the game.

900x600_A4MO3SCV3R710001

900x600_A4MO3Q9I3R710001

During the competition, referee shoulders the responsibility of dividing the crickets into different weight range and assign fighting teams. To get the fight started, players use a long stick to tease the cricket’s antenna to get them to fight.

900x600_A4N7RM5K3R710001

In November 2005, Beijing City Police ended a cricket gambling group and confiscated all the tools and crickets. The thousand years old game has provided Chinese with immense pleasure, for those who invest in the play, some pride themselves with the winning titles, some harvest high return on their investment. It is truly a game of shrill.

Good evening. Here is a rock comic.

You may notice the website has a new coat of paint (thanks Sam!) and more importantly a random button, which I recommend you try out. It’s like Russian roulette, except all chambers have bullets, and the bullets are all comics, and you shoot the gun directly at your funny bone. Except sometimes you miss and everyone gets mad at you. At me.

This is not a good analogy. I hope your day is going well

A school with only 1 student

by Annie Lee

Sept 1 is the official school opening day in mainland China. Many pupils will happily grab their school  bags and flock to the joyful headquarter of buddies and games. However, that is not the case for 6 years old girl Liu Xinyi, whose first day of school was greeted by no playmate other than the one and only teacher in the school.

In a rural village of Enshi City, Hubei Province, more and more peasants have no other ways of making a living but to migrate to the city for work, bringing away with them their children. The local school has been suffering from student shortage since 2008, with average attendant of less than 10.

126943035_14095782693081n

53-year-old Xie Shikui has been teaching in this school for 36 years, and since long time ago he has been the sole caretaker of and teacher of the school.

At lunch break, the teacher will make lunch for him and his student.

126943035_14095782694781n

After school, Mr Xie will accompany his only student home.

Relevance

Last week there were a bunch of great posts expounding on the staying power of blogs and RSS. It seems we’re not the only people comparing social media platforms to the open web and we gained a lot of valuable new insight.

All weekend I’ve been thinking about relevance. When Twitter first took off, it delivered. So much of my Twitter feed was filled with timely, interesting material that it became addictive.

But over time Twitter became more of a platform for self-promotion, corporate advertisement, and random, passive-aggressive posts from college roommates. It went from “check out this amazing article I read” to “look at me because I said so.” That’s just not relevant to me.

Facebook never really delivered on relevance, but it was at least new and fresh for a while. Now it feels like an obligation. Happy Birthday. Yes, I like your new hat. Congratulations on your anniversary. Oooh, she’s so cute. And, of course, buy this stuff from Nordstrom.

But blogs and RSS, like email and websites, remain. They are solely focused on delivering relevant information. Could they be better? Heck yes. Check out my queue after I spent several hours reading yesterday:

image

Yikes, that’s a lot of reading left to do. But that’s 2,619 posts with the highest signal to noise ratio I’m going to see all day. We’re hard at work with ideas to make that even better. And we believe that social is going to be the key in improving that ratio.

We’ll have more on that in the future. But for now, let’s all get back to blogging and reading. May your screen be filled with relevance.

Tiny Shrimp-like Organisms Try to Illuminate the Insides of Fish That Eat Them

Tiny Shrimp like Organisms Try to Illuminate the Insides of Fish That Eat Them science fish biology

No, these aren’t light vomiting fish, though you would be forgiven for thinking so because that’s exactly what it looks like. What you’re seeing is the defense mechanism of a tiny crustacean called an ostracod, a shrimp-like organism about 1mm in size that some fish accidentally eat while hunting for plankton. When eaten by a translucent cardinalfish, the ostracod immediately releases a bioluminescent chemical in an attempt to illuminate the fish from the inside, making it immediately identifiable to predators. WHAT. Not wanting to be eaten, the cardinalfish immediately spits out the ostracod, resulting in little underwater fish fireworks. What an incredible game of evolutionary cat and mouse. The clip above is from a new show on BBC Two called Super Senses. If you’re in the UK you can watch it online in HD for a few more days. (via For Science Sake)

what happened in roughly 1870 though

why was there temporary internet

with a few people searching for pokemon?

It’s a search of Google books, but the question still stands, what the Fuck happened in 1870

I CAN ANSWER THIS!!

In the Cornish dialect of English, Pokemon meant ‘clumsy’ (pure coincidence).

In the mid 1800s there was a surge of writing about the Cornish language and dialect in an attempt to preserve them with glossaries and dictionaries being written. I wrote about it HERE.

I just love that this post happened to find the ONE HUMAN ON THE INTERNET who had the answer to this question

Okay i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again bc nobody else seems to have thought of this, how was there temporary internet in 1870

I’ve got news for you buddy, the internet’s been around for a long, long time

GOP drug czar saw nothing wrong with beheading dealers

by SAM SMITH
LA Times, 1989 - William J. Bennett, federal drug policy coordinator, said Thursday night he had no moral qualms about beheading convicted drug dealers.

"Morally, I don't have any problem with that at all," Bennett said when asked on the CNN program "Larry King Live" call-in television show, whether he would support Saudi Arabian-style beheadings to deter drug dealers.

... Bennett, who heads the Bush Administration's fight against illegal drugs, said the idea of beheading was "morally plausible" but legally difficult.

"I mean ask most Americans: if they saw somebody out on the street selling drugs to their kid, what they would feel morally justified in doing--tear them limb from limb.

"There's no moral problem there. I used to teach ethics--trust me," he told the talk show host.

Bennett went on to say that he would like to see more use of the death penalty.

Ikea’s Simulacrum

by Alex Tabarrok
Mahmoud

conway's architecture renders got really realistic even back in school, gogo blender3d and friends, they all have "camera" filters that do all the proper blurring and higher order lens flaws. Raytracing is as realistic as it gets :D

An amazing 75% of the images in an Ikea catalog are not photographs but CGI.

…the real turning point for us was when, in 2009, they called us and said, “You have to stop using CG. I’ve got 200 product images and they’re just terrible. You guys need to practise more.” So we looked at all the images they said weren’t good enough and the two or three they said were great, and the ones they didn’t like were photography and the good ones were all CG! Now, we only talk about a good or a bad image – not what technique created it.”

Why Burning Man is not an example of a loosely regulated tech utopia

"We used to have R.V.s and precooked meals," said a man who attends Burning Man with a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs... "Now, we have the craziest chefs in the world and people who build yurts for us that have beds and air-conditioning." He added with a sense of amazement, "Yes, air-conditioning in the middle of the desert!"

His camp includes about 100 people from the Valley and Hollywood start-ups, as well as several venture capital firms. And while dues for most non-tech camps run about $300 a person, he said his camp's fees this year were $25,000 a person. A few people, mostly female models flown in from New York, get to go free, but when all is told, the weekend accommodations will collectively cost the partygoers over $2 million.

Such camps, reports Bilton, also included "Sherpas" that serve as servants.

For a photographer living in a major city filled with iconic architecture, museums, and myriad tourist destinations, the struggle to capture an authentic image is great. This was the exact situation photographer Michael Wolf found himself in after moving to Paris from Hong Kong in 2008. Surrounded in a city filled with sights that could easily be interpreted as cliché, Wolf pointed his camera away from the recognizable landmarks and instead focused on the dense rooftops surrounding the city. Packed with stout chimneys, tv antennas, graffiti, and numerous geometric forms, these shots present a strange abstracted view of a usually recognizable place.

Wolf’s “Paris Abstract” series is currently on view at Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco through September 6, 2014. (via Juxtapoz)

SWAT Team Surrounds White Male Carrying 'Large Umbrella' on Campus

On August 20, a possible gunman was reported on the campus of California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), and orders to "Shelter-In-Place" (S-I-P) were put out until a SWAT team finally surrounded their suspect, "a staff member carrying a large umbrella and carry bag."

NBC 7 said, "The first report came in as a man with a long gun" walking on campus.

After about 30 minutes of S-I-P, staff member Bill Craig realized he fit the description of the possible gunman and surrendered himself to police. A SWAT team surrounded Craig and determined he had no gun in his possession.

According to guns.com, Police released the following statement:

Earlier this morning there was a report to University Police of a possible gunman at CSUSM. The campus was immediately placed on lock down. Police performed a security sweep and determined that the suspect was not armed, but was a staff member carrying a large umbrella and carry bag. We are grateful for the quick response by our police officers to the perceived threat and to our campus community for their cooperation during the brief state of emergency.

The 2017 total solar eclipse awarded to the United States

by Jason Kottke
Mahmoud

lincoln nebraska 2017 here we go, schedule your weddings folks

2017 Eclipse

I do not officially have a bucket list1 but if I did have one, watching a total solar eclipse would be on it. Was just talking about it the other day in fact. Well. I am pretty damn excited for the Great American Eclipse of 2017!

In August 21, 2017, millions of people across the United States will see nature's most wondrous spectacle -- a total eclipse of the Sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty; the Moon completely blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a deep twilight, and the Sun's corona shimmers in the darkened sky. This is your guide to understand, prepare for, and view this rare celestial event.

It goes right through the middle of the country too...almost everyone in the lower 48 is within a day's drive of seeing it. Cities in the path of the totality include Salem, OR, Jackson, WY, Lincoln, NE, St. Louis, MO (nearly), Nashville, TN, and Charleston, SC.

Weather will definitely play a factor in actually seeing the eclipse, so I will be keeping an eye on Eclipser ("Climatology and Maps for the Eclipse Chaser") as the event draws near. Early analysis indicates Oregon as the best chance for clear skies. Matt, I am hereby laying claim to your guest room in three years time. So excited!!

[1] Also on this hypothetical bucket list: dunking a basketball, going to outer space, learning to surf, and two chicks at the same time.
