Crazy art exhibit

by Joanna Goddard
This past weekend, my aunt, Toby and I walked up to the Chelsea art galleries to see these busts by Chinese artist Li Hongbo. Although his classical statues look as if they're made from marble, they're actually carved from thousands of sheets of paper that was glued together. So, if you pick them up, the busts will stretch and twist like a slinky!
Watch the video...how crazy is that?! The artist was inspired by Chinese paper lanterns.

(The exhibit runs through March 22nd.)

P.S. Art exhibits: Swings, slides, rain and marrying Prince William.

Scratch-and-sniff wine book

by Joanna Goddard
Richard Betts is one of a couple hundred master sommeliers in the world, but he’s not a snob. He actually believes that “wine is a grocery, not a luxury.” Cheers to that!

So he has written a scratch-and-sniff book all about wine. You learn how to identify wine aromas from bacon to fruit to cat pee (for real) and figure out which wines you like best. The book is beautifully illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton and seems to have a great sense of humor. More photos, below...Read More >

Vacation rentals with a twist

by Joanna Goddard
We really like renting houses on vacation (they're typically more spacious and less expensive than hotels, and you feel like a local). But some people—my mother-in-law, for example—get freaked out by the idea of renting someone else's place. What if it's gross? Dirty? A scam?

Well! OneFineStay sounds amazing. The company curates apartment rentals but run them like hotels. You get fluffy towels and high-thread-count sheets. They make the beds with hospital corners. They even put fancy mini shampoos in the bathrooms.

You can find apartments in New York and London—and this month they're launching in Paris and L.A. The apartments are gorgeous!
Isn't that a smart idea? Wouldn't you like to try it? (My mother-in-law will be psyched:)

P.S. 10 ways not to look like a tourist, and the weird thing we do on vacations.

"Concussion" Just Might Be The Lesbian Independent Film That Breaks Through

Condensed to a synopsis, this queer take on a suburban housewife’s midlife crisis may read like a pulp novel , but what director Stacie Passon does with those tropes is what you’ll remember.

When we first meet Abby she is sweating among a group of finely toned housewives in a sunlit spin class. She stares into the camera, unblinking — an expression that reads weary, determined.

Just seconds later, Abby, played by Robin Weigert, is cradling the side of her head and calling her son "a little shit" after being hit in the head by his softball, an accident that results in the film's titular concussion. "I hate this," Abby blurts out, a bloody paper towel in hand. "I don't want this. I don't want it." She recoils in the passenger seat of a car that is driven by her lawyer wife, their two kids silent in the back.

The "concussion" in director and writer Stacie Passon's debut film is more than a plot point setting the story into motion. It is a manifestation of what might be called Abby Abelman's midlife crisis. Shortly after being hit in the head, Abby decides that what she wants is to spend less time in the Jersey suburbs and go back to work in New York City where, eventually, "work" becomes soliciting sex from curious women.

A recipient of this year's Adrienne Shelly Foundation Director's Grant and the Teddy Award Jury Prize at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival, Passon has already received much praise for her film — the release of which will take place in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 4 and then spread to more cities from there. Rose Troche, known for her work on The L Word and the landmark Go Fish, produced Concussion, with Robin Weigert giving a resonant performance.

After returning from the hospital, head bandage intact, Abby drives across the bridge to pursue her latest project, renovating a rundown loft in Manhattan. We watch her go back home that very night and kiss her wife goodnight before rolling to her side of the bed. We watch her sprint on the treadmill until she is sick. We watch her grocery shop and fold laundry and pick her daughter up from class.

Written down, these actions may sound tedious. But on screen they are deeply revealing. Each moment is portrayed so honestly, each action so specific to the character, that it becomes impossible to see Abby as anything less than a breathing, complex person; and we really must understand her as such to believe what she does next. In the film's turning point — one of those rare story moments that is just as surprising as it is inevitable — Abby drives into the city and pays a junkie hooker for sex. Sexually abandoned in her marriage and unhappy in the life she has spent half of her life building, Abby begins to use the loft as a space to meet the women who pay her for sex.

"Stacie's an old friend," Troche told me in a recent interview, "and we hadn't seen each other for 10 years, so I think there was a reunion aspect to this project, where it was like, 'Oh, I like this person, this person's really smart.' That showed up in the writing, and the story, I didn't know that anyone had done it before. I mean, people have done stories about women who become prostitutes, absolutely. But I had not seen a story of this type."

While only a handful of films tell stories that follow lesbian characters, countless films explore prostitution. Working Girls, Risky Business, My Own Private Idaho, and Belle de Jour are a famous few. What separates Concussion from its predecessors, in both queer and mainstream cinema, is its ability to transcend the categorizations of prostitute, queer, mainstream. Instead, it builds on and combines those genres in a way that is rarely seen. Concussion explores sexuality and sexual independence through a lens specific to its characters, giving the traditional story line of "housewife seeks escape from her bourgeois lifestyle" a queer perspective.

"I think that we're seeing a shift," Rose said, "and I hope that that continues to happen — where things are not so in a box, and the box is only for the people inside the box, and the box is where I feel safe, and the rest of the world can fuck off. I think this film might have two walls of a box, or three walls of a box, but it's definitely opening out to the rest of the world."

In contrast to a large number of films starring LGBT characters that have come before it, Concussion is not about the consequences of homosexuality. The consequences Abby faces are not treated as a result of whom she loves. They are treated as a result of the risks she takes at this point in her life.

"Generally people who see the film think it's very much about the experience of marriage and the loss of independence and the loss of intimacy, and those are issues that are universal," Passon said. "However, there is a component to the film that is uniquely gay. In this piece, I wasn't interested in telling a story about the right to have a relationship. I was interested in starting 20 years into a relationship and seeing what that was like. To see that story articulated through the prism of a lesbian relationship, for people who are gay or straight, I think is interesting and new because there haven't been a lot of films about that."

inspired table {blooming branches}

by noreply@blogger.com (Blair Friedeman)
I have always loved the organic and sculptural touch that suspended branch installations add to large soirees and the way they completely transform event spaces, especially when perfectly adorned with floral elements. It is an idea I never thought of scaling down for more intimate parties at private residences, but these simple + lovely installations by Marigold and Mint have my mind reeling with ideas of just how impacting the look can be in a more casual setting and on a smaller scale.
I am so inspired that I think I may just have to try to create one this weekend!

A fourth grader's documentary about school lunch

by Joanna Goddard
Have you guys heard about Yuck, the documentary about school lunches written and directed by a fourth grader? Zachary is the brave filmmaker who goes undercover to reveal the truth about the gross meals at his NYC elementary school. He's hilarious, adorable (love his polo shirt and gelled hair!) and totally intrepid ("I could get in big trouble for this," he says, while sneaking his mini HD camera into the cafeteria). He has a big future ahead of him!

Here's the trailer, below, and you can watch the full 20-minute documentary online here.

12 Course Can.

by noreply@blogger.com (Shoko)
Pickled beef and charred strawberries; foraged ramps, truffle butter, and a coconut crepe: artist Chris Godfrey's All In One packs gourmet cuisine - twelve courses worth - into a pop-top can.

Unsavory? Certainly. Clever? Without a doubt. Godfrey writes, "Contempary culture means on every trip into town, you’re bombarded with gimmicks galore. Gimmicks often diminish their products to turn a profit, downgrading on the content but selling you something thats ‘50% more’. The All in One 12 course meal offers the average Joe the chance to dine like royalty without the washing up."

Tenderloin Bak Kut Teh from Song Fa

by bma
Tenderloin Bak Kut Teh

I really needed a thin salty soup to sit in my belly this morning, and eventually I found myself here (11 New Bridge Rd, 6533-6128), a place that I had heard good things about and had always seen long lines at, but had never gotten around to coming here until now. Anyway, it was interesting in not only its old school decor and individual water taps at each table for tea, but also in that they had this tenderloin bak kut teh, featuring thin slices of meat rather than the usual bone-attached pieces. I liked it - the broth was peppery, the meat was tender, and it was easy to eat. I'd come back for that.

When I come across unique versions of fruit (like golden raspberries), I get really excited. I found these Witch Finger grapes at the grocery store the other day. They're shaped like chili peppers yet taste just like red seedless grapes. They're sweet, juicy, and super fun to eat..almost like eating candy in grape form...

what changed you?

by Joy

Oh-joy-glasses

Recently, Bob and I were out to dinner with friends and he said that having a daughter was the best thing that could have happened to him because his mindset changed about what it's like to be a girl has changed now that he has to raise one.

It made me think about the notable moments in my life, and the events that really changed me. I can honestly say that three things impacted my life and forever changed the person I was into who I am now...

#1 Taking karate as a kid. I started taking karate when I was 12 years old and studied martial arts for eight years. I was a shy kid, and karate brought me out of my shell. It really gave me the self-confidence I needed during those awkward tween and teen years. Karate was my life and my passion, so much so that I eventually became an instructor and worked my way up to a second-degree black belt.

#2 Losing a dear friend. One of my best friends passed away in our early 20s. It was a heartbreak unlike anything I had ever felt before. I cried every day for many months and found myself in a hole of sadness unlike anything I had ever experienced. But what came out of it was a reminder that life is short, and that I needed to stop putting off things that really mattered. It made me feel ready to finally marry my boyfriend of 10 years, it made me ready to start my own business, and it made me appreciate those I love even more.

#3 Becoming a parent. Okay, so this is probably an obvious one. Everyone says that becoming a parent changes you. But for me it was about more than the extra responsibility or the joy that a child can bring you. Having a baby made me stop stressing about the small things. I spent my teen and adult years obsessing over not having a flat stomach or that my boobs were too small; now I can't remember the last time I even thought twice about that or stared at myself in the mirror, judging the person I saw in its reflection. Sure, I am still sensitive to the judgement of others and still care about what people think (I wish I didn't), but the judgement I used to place on myself has somehow disappeared like a puff of smoke. And that feels so great.

What are the events or moments that changed you?

5 Craigslist Tips

by jordan

We aren’t moving into our new house for a few months but I’ve already been trolling Craigslist every evening looking for new furniture. Moving from 500 square feet to 1700 square feet is a big jump. There are a lot more rooms to furnish than before. I mean, we are going to actually have a dining room! I love Craigslist and when I’m looking for specific furniture nothing is more time and cost efficient for me than Craigslist. Most of the furniture from my house is from Craigslist and I definitely have my bag of tricks to get people to answer my emails. I swear I already wrote a post like this but I couldn’t find one in my archives so here are all my Craigslist tips and tricks in one place. (The pieces below are some I want for my new house, no one in the Bay Area is allowed to search for these the next few months, deal?)

Craigslist Search Tips

Tip #1. It Takes Time | The number one thing you can do to find amazing things on Craigslist is spend a lot of time looking. I know this sounds obvious but I used to wonder how people always found such amazing pieces for cheap and my friend explained how she spent 1-2 hours every evening looking on Craigslist. (And this was even before they had the picture feature when you had to click through and it took twice as long.) I really started having success when I adjusted my expectations for how long it was going to take. I go through phases but when I’m redecorating I will spend a few evenings a week searching and emailing.

Tip #2. Search Tricks | Everyone has their favorite search terms but depending on what I’m looking for I try to get very specific or very broad. For example if I am looking for a farm table (which I am) I will search specifically like: “french farm table” or “vintage pine table” after that I search with broad search terms like: “vintage table” or “old dining table.” Sometimes I’ll get really broad and just type in the word “vintage” and spend and hour looking. I’ve found some really great pieces that way. Another search trick I have is to use 1st Dibs. 1st Dibs is kind of like Craigslist for Rich People. Because I’m not a furniture expert it helps to go look at the amazing selection of sofas or dressers. When I find one I like that has a brand I’ve never heard of I do a search for that on Craigslist. For example I found that great dresser above by American of Martinsville, a brand I’d never heard of, and when I searched on Craigslist for “American of Martinsville” I found some beautiful dressers for 1/10 the price of 1st Dibs.

click through for the full story

Tip #3. Take a Screen Grab | Usually if I am searching for pieces I’ll open up an email window and then just put the different Craigslist links in the body of the email. Once I’ve spent some time “adding them to my cart” I go back to the email and look at each post to decide if I’m going to contact the seller. I take a screengrab of all the listings I’m going to pursue. This is especially helpful if sellers put their numbers in the ad. I’ve had a few incidents where either the ad expired or I lost the email address and I was able to contact the owner after the ad was removed from Craigslist.

Tip #4. Getting the Seller to Respond | There is a secret to this that works for me 95% of the time. My epiphany for working with sellers happened when I was trying to sell my own furniture on Craigslist several years ago. I realized that i just wanted the furniture out of my house as soon as possible. So when I was choosing between all the people who emailed there was one that said “I’m very interested, I have cash and can pick up the piece tonight.” I immediately emailed the guy who made me feel the most confident in his intent to buy. The key is to sound extremely interested and like you are ready to take it off their hands ASAP. If you have more questions or want to bargain don’t include that in the initial email. Once they respond to you and you are making plans to go see it you can kindly ask if it smells like smoke or if they have a pet or if they are willing to bargain a bit. I personally don’t bargain unless I get there and it has stains or something that wasn’t pictured.

Tip #5. Set up an RSS Feed for your Favorite Items | My friend Brooke taught me this trick a few years ago, you can have your favorite searches show up in your feed (like Google Reader RIP). The only problem is people use so many search terms that you still have to weed through a lot of stuff. I’ve found the trick is to get super specific. For example if you search for “Saarinen Table” it is going to be a waste of time, you aren’t going to want to search through all those spammy posts. But if you search “Vintage Authentic Saarinen Table Marble” then when the table of your dreams comes onto Craigslist you’ll be the first to know.

Ps: Emily Henderson did a really great post about this right here.

What are your favorite Craigslist tricks? I’d love to hear them!

CHOREOGRAPHED DANCES

by Beth

When working with a choreographer for your first dance, don’t forget to talk to your instructor about the dance floor size. They will likely have an opinion of what size is needed based on the dance being created. On the flip side, if you’re working with a venue that has limited space, that should be communicated to the instructor in advance so he or she can assist you in creating a dance that will work in the space given. Lastly, don’t forget to communicate to your planner, band or DJ, where to cue the music so you can start your first dance off on point.

Swan Lake

by Part Nouveau

Annie Leibovitz and BjorkIn 2001, Icelandic artist Björk wore what has now become one of the most infamous red carpet dresses. Designed by Macedonian Marjan Pejoski, the frock referred to as the “swan dress,” was meant to symbolize fertility, a notion further reinforced by Björk as she left a trail of eggs down the red carpet. While most viewed the dress as outlandish, perhaps it was not so unfamiliar to our eyes. A few years earlier in 1997, Annie Leibovtiz photographed then-budding actor Leonardo DiCaprio seemingly cuddling a swan that has looped its neck around that of the handsome film star for Vanity Fair.

Humans of New York

by Joanna Goddard
When you walk around New York City, it's easy to get in a zone and barely notice the people around you. But Brandon from Humans of New York reminds you that everyone has a beautiful  story to tell. He takes photos of strangers on the street and elicits funny quotes about their marriage or kids, or asks them simple frank questions like, "What was a difficult time in your life?" or "When were you most scared?" Every time I visit the site, I get sucked down a rabbit hole.

I cannot wait for his book to come out this fall.

P.S. This was a great one:
"There’s six people in every relationship: you, the person you think you are, and the person your partner thinks you are. Then there’s your partner, the person they think they are, and the person you think they are."
