The Three Laws of Robotics

I feel like some of my characters are these alternates. Now it makes so much sense why things turn out the way they do. Hmm.

In ordering #5, self-driving cars will happily drive you around, but if you tell them to drive to a car dealership, they just lock the doors and politely ask how long humans take to starve to death.

I want to write an action movie about some older retired government agent who’s married and settled down. He’s started to let his guard down. And that’s when the past comes back to haunt him.

They come for him while he’s home alone and he’s resisting their interrogation techniques, refusing to betray whatever or whoever they’re after. Except then his teenage daughter comes home early.

And the baddies send one of their henchmen out there to deal with her. And RetiredActionDad is all “Don’t you touch her! I’ll kill you! Rar!” But the baddies just laugh.

Except they realize, after a little while has passed, that the one guy never came back from dealing with the daughter.

And then go outside and find the missing baddie floating face down in the pool.

The rest of the movie is the teenage girl calling in favors and running around following the baddies to save her RetiredActionDad.

So Taken, but in reverse.

It should be called The Liability.

I would watch the hell out of this.

And then in the sequel, the daughter has joined the FBI, following in her dad’s footsteps. But the brother of the villain from the first one wants revenge. So he kidnaps her mother. She and her dad head abroad to find mom in the villain’s secret lair…while mom has already escaped has been busy hiding in the air vents and stabbing goons with knitting needles. Turns out she was a Russian spy who defected and married her government handler forty years ago, and can handle herself.

Spectacular "Space Glass" Pendants Let You Hold the Cosmos in the Palm of Your Hand

by Kristine Mitchell
Suko

Mesmerizing. I want to see them in person.

Ever wanted to know what it felt like to hold the cosmos on the end of a string? Japanese glass artist Satoshi Tomizu gives you the opportunity to experience something kind of close, with his stunning handmade art, Space Glass. His pendants are very simple, but incredibly beautiful, as Tomizu appears to capture a universe inside every delicate bauble. Each has a loop on top, allowing you to turn them into unique and eye-catching necklaces.

Tomizu began working with heat-resistant glass at the age of 28, and spent years honing his craft, which has allowed him to grow into the skilled glass worker he is today. Most of his pendants are quite tiny, with an opal in the centre to represent a planet, and flecks of gold scattered within to act as clusters of stars. From different angles the pieces take on a totally new appearance, each intricate swirl and glittery particle catching the light and adding to the rich and hypnotic recreation of a tiny galaxy on a string.

19th Century Postcards Predicted the World in the Year 2000

by Sara Barnes
Suko

The "School" one makes me think of the 4T learning-by-implant or light-strobe-info-dump. How did they know??

And where is my whalebus?

Like many of us today, people living in the 20th century were curious about what the future would hold. French artist Jean-Marc Côté and his colleagues attempted to predict the world in the year 2000, and they did so through playful illustrations. Known as France in the Year 2000, these futuristic pictures were released in four installments—in 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1910—and took the form of cigarette/cigar box inserts and, later, postcards.

While the illustrations were far fetched at the time, the concepts aren't that far off from today's reality.  Some scenes include advanced technological tools, like when manufacturing clothes, sweeping the floor, and harvesting a farm. Delivering mail and putting out fires was predicted to be done in mid-air.  They even have electric roller skates and rolling houses.

The series includes at least 87 cards, which were first produced for the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. They lacked widespread distribution due to financial constraints, but after many decades came to light again. Science-fiction author Isaac Asimov rediscovered them and published them as a book titled Futuredays: A Nineteenth Century Vision of the Year 2000.

Bergdorf Goodman’s Hauntingly Beautiful ‘Crimson Peak’ Window Displays

by Courtney Kraft
Suko

May be some scene spoilers but very nicely done! I particularly like how they did the elevator.

Bergdorf Goodman, the legendary department store in New York City, is renowned for its visually stunning and over-the-top window displays. The holiday-inspired windows are beautiful enough to stop pedestrians on the street, and have become a highly-anticipated Christmastime staple. In celebration of Legendary Pictures’ Crimson Peak, Bergdorf Goodman has created several new window displays featuring pieces from some of the world’s most famous fashion designers. The Crimson Peak special is the department store’s largest display based on a feature film.

Window 1: Corridor

BG Window - CorridorPhoto credit: Ricky Zehavi

The first Bergdorf Goodman window was inspired by the ominous gothic corridors of Crimson Peak, as envisioned by Guillermo del Toro. In a haunted mansion that breathes and bleeds, these corridors are like the arteries that flow through it, studded with teeth-like spikes that frame the characters like an insect in a killing jar.

Featured Designers: Oscar De La Renta, Tom Ford

Window 2: Cemetery Gates

BG Window - Cemetary Gates

The second window showcases the wrought iron gates that lead to Crimson Peak, looking out onto a world of restless spirits. The cemetery that lies beyond shows where a key character from the film is laid to rest, but sometimes the sins of the past cannot be buried–even if they were committed in the name of love. After all, love drives us to do mad things. Love makes monsters of us all.

Featured Designers: Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, Gareth Pugh, Altuzarra, Anthony Vaccarello

Window 3: Elevator

BG Window - ElevatorPhoto credit: Ricky Zehavi

The house in Crimson Peak was conceived by Guillermo del Toro as a living thing. The wind gives it breath, and molten red clay is the lifeblood pulsing through its veins. The third window showcases the spine of the house: the elevator shaft. Connecting every level and penetrating the heart of Allerdale Hall, this elevator carries our heroine into the film’s deepest mysteries.

Featured Designers: Donald Deal

Window 4: Bathroom

BG Window - BathroomPhoto credit: Ricky Zehavi

Inspiring the fourth showcase is the bathroom where one of Crimson Peak’s most haunting scenes takes place. In this place of darkness and desire, a terrible crime took place which the house cannot let go, and mournful spirits of the past return with a warning for the living, shining light on despicable deeds that should never be spoken of again.

Featured Designers: J.Mendel, Andrew GN

Window 5: Attic

BG Window - AtticPhoto credit: Ricky Zehavi

The fifth Bergdorf Goodman window is inspired by the haunting attic space from Crimson Peak, a secret place of childhood secrets where moth wings flutter and skeletal timbers creak. As imagined by del Toro, the mansion in the film feels like flesh and bone, as though the house has a soul… but the real horror comes from the human heart and the human spirit within it.

Stitch ‘Em Up Tight With This Amazing DIY Makeup Tutorial

by Mac Beauvais
Suko

Helpful tips! I really like the star trek data/ensign look at the end.

It’s that time of year again. Pumpkin spice dominates all food flavors. Netflix is finally getting around to adding more horror classics. Facebook invites to Halloween parties have been rolling in. Now for the big question: what is your costume going to be?

Fear not! We’ve got you covered with some makeup tutorials that we hope will inspire and add spice to your costume plans, and this first one will have you in stitches! (I refuse to apologize for that joke.)

What You Need:

  • Red creme makeup *or* red eyeshadow
  • (Optional) Black eyeshadow
  • Brown eyeshadow *or* bronzing powder
  • White creme makeup *or* white eyeshadow
  • Black liquid eyeliner
  • Thin tipped brushes
  • Eyeshadow blending brush
  • A steady hand

The look I’m about to outline can be achieved with a few different tools and methods. That means it’s easy to find supplies and that you may even have most, if not all, of the things you need without making a special shopping trip!

The first step is to go ahead and lay down any foundation makeup you would normally wear. Put on your primer, concealer and foundation, then dust it all with a setting powder. It will be nearly impossible to add these things after you get started.

Next, decide where you want your stitches to be. I really love the look of them running from temple to jaw line, but you can place them anywhere you’d like. After you’ve made up your mind, draw a dotted line in red where you want the stitches to be. You can use either a red creme makeup, like I did, or a red eyeshadow.

IMG_7507

Personally, I thought the red I used was a little bright, so I went back over the dashes with a touch of black eyeshadow to deepen their tone.

After you have the dashes in place, you are going to take a small brush and draw in what will look like parenthesis around each one using either your brown eyeshadow or bronzer. This is to help give the look a 3D effect.

IMG_7515

Don’t worry if they look a little weird because after you’ve drawn them in, as you will be using your eyeshadow blending brush to carefully feather out the edges to give it a softer, shadowy look. Take care not to run the brush through the red, or you’ll risk smudging.

Next, you will want to take your white creme or eyeshadow and lightly fill in the gaps between the red and the brown shadow. If you find a pure white shade is going to be too light on your skin, you can alternately use a little bit of concealer in a shade or two lighter than your natural tone. This is going to increase the 3D look.

IMG_7521

Now comes the real fun! It’s time to add the stitches. Take your liquid eyeliner and carefully draw in your stitches. They should ideally fall between your red dashes. I like to have a lot of variety and direction on mine, but you can also draw them in a more uniform manner if you prefer.

IMG_7523

The last step is to again take your brown eyeshadow or bronzer and lightly add a line of it under the stitches and in little dots where the “thread” would be going into your skin. I recommend adding the brown under the stitches as light is more likely to be casting down on your face. This step will reinforce the 3D look.

IMG_7524

Here’s where you are absolutely free to stop and dash out to your party, but I want to show you a few ways to take this to a more advanced level.

Let’s say a mad doctor was, in fact, stitching you together. Chances are good he’s not going to have all of the same bits to work with, so maybe he has to use some flesh scraps from a more necrotic “donor”. For this I applied some basic beauty makeup to one side of my face.

IMG_7527

Then for the upper quarter of the other side I took some green eyeshadows along with contour makeup and started layering them on to give a more ghoulish look.

IMG_7528

From there, you can apply your stitches exactly the same way as listed above. I also took an extra step and added a touch of white creme over the center of the stitches to make them pop out a little more. You can also swap in a silver creme makeup if you want to look stapled together.

IMG_7537

This really is a versatile makeup technique that can serve a lot of purposes. With a little modification, I was even able to use it to create a look based off of Data in Star Trek: First Contact. And speaking of contacts, adding a contrasting color into one eye really ups the bizarre, disjointed nature of the look.

StitchedCollage

We would love to see how you apply this look as well as hear other tutorial requests for the future. In the meantime, stitch ‘em tight!

Popular Superhero-Themed Bionic Arms Made for Children

by Anna Gragert
Suko

Prosthetics like this are nothing new but I do like that Disney is not being a jerk about it and actually letting them have royalty-free licenses so they can make them look like the hero/character they are supposed to (though the Elsa one isn't very Elsa-y imho).

Startup company Open Bionics is teaming up with Disney to specially produce affordable 3D prosthetic hands for children. The best part is that Disney's provided the organization with royalty-free licenses, so that these life-changing devices can be modeled after popular characters and superheroes. There's a bionic hand that pays homage to Iron Man, one that was inspired by Frozen's Elsa, and even a Star Wars, lightsaber-themed hand. "The power of these prosthetics is that the public perception is completely different. All of a sudden they're not being asked how they lost their hand, they're being asked where they got their cool robot hand, how does it feel, and how does it work?" Open Bionics CEO Joel Gibbard told Independent. "What might have been perceived as their greatest weakness is seen as their greatest strength."

To help the startup make quality prosthetics, they were given $120,000 as part of Disney's Techstars Accelerator program. This will allow them to develop models that are directed by a user's muscle movements. The bionic hands will also contain vibrating motors, which provide feedback when the child uses their "powers"—when they fire an Iron Man rocket, for example—and simultaneously reveals the child's grip strength. LED lights supply the hands with fun lights, but also give doctors and parents the opportunity to understand what signals are being sent to the revolutionary tool. On the Star Wars prosthetic, these lights can be adjusted to display the individual's favorite color.

As they continue to change kids' lives, Open Bionics' main goal is to make these bionic hands affordable. By the end of next year, they hope to create more designs that cost around $500.

"Moss People" Ceramic Sculptures Bring Nordic Fairy Tales to Life

by Anna Gragert
Suko

Nicely walks that fine line between creepy and too creepy for me.

Sculptor Kim Simonsson molds earthy ceramic pieces that look as though they've stepped out of Nordic fairy tales and into our own world. For his Moss People series, the artist applied this fantastical aesthetic to the intriguing children and forest creatures who served as his muses. What results is a collection composed of five installations that represent several juxtapositions. There's the contrast between the earthy, moss-like nylon and almost-alien figures behind this vibrant coating. Viewers will also note that an element of childlike innocence is weaved together with a darker theme. The entire exhibition is thoroughly spellbinding, requiring viewers to think about the relationships between each element.

“My sculptures are usually very sleek and smooth. Pieces at Moss People are rougher and more personal. You can see my handprint in them,” Simonsson told TL mag. “The nylon coating also works well when the surface of the sculpture is slightly coarser and you can see that it’s handmade.” To examine the sculptor's engaging works in person, you can visit New York's Jason Jacques Gallery until October 28th.

Enchanting Photos of Autumnal Forests by a Wandering Photographer

by Kristine Mitchell
Suko

Mmm... I think it's time to go wander amongst the trees again.

There is nothing quite like a long walk through the woods to clear the mind, particularly in the crisp autumn air when the leaves have transformed into vibrant variations of red and orange. Thankfully, photographer Janek Sedlář captures the profound beauty of the forest in its most stunning state. The young photographer, who hales from the Czech Republic, reveals the haunting atmosphere of the woods and meadows where he goes to seek peace.

A self-taught photographer, Sedlář had initially studied ceramics before changing his focus. During a difficult period of his life, he began to escape to the countryside of his home region, Moravia and the White Carpathian Nature Reserve, with just his backpack and camera. On these long walks through the forest he witnessed such beauty, that “words cannot convey, a man must just be present to experience the moment.” His photographs are his attempts to share the magnificence of the natural recluse he observes.

Sedlář believes that walking through nature allows a man to emerge with heavier legs, but a lighter mind. His enchanting images of the Carpathian Woods are excellent motivation to get outside and go for a wander.

Sculptural Lamps Crafted from Gourds Project Dazzling Displays of Light

by Jenny Zhang
Suko

Rebecca, some ideas for pumpkin carving this year...

Polish artist Przemek Krawczyński transforms calabash (bottle gourds) into carefully handcrafted, intricately carved lamps that illuminate their surroundings with brilliant displays of light. The unique sculptures are beautiful by day, but they become truly magical in the dark as light shines through thousands of holes to project radiant designs and patterns around the room.

"By day, my lamp is a unique sculpture, while at night, the light breathes new life into that sculpture, seeping through intricately carved wood and passing through thousands of holes," Krawczyński says. "Flowing shadows fill the space and cast the patterns on the surrounding surfaces, which turns each interior into scenes [of] breathtaking spectacle. The hypnotizing light can create dreamlike, romantic atmospheres in bedrooms, as well as calm and peaceful vibes in home offices or living rooms. Regardless of place, the play of light is feast for the eyes."

Krawczyński is entirely self-taught as an artist, having first experimented with gourds in 2009. A year later, he decided to quit his job at an architecture studio to pursue his creative passion. He traveled to Senegal, where he bought the calabashes that would become his main medium. Since then, he has created many gorgeous lamps, with each piece taking about 2-4 months to complete. No two patterns are the same, making every single lamp an utterly unique work of art that is both functional and dazzling to behold.

what would a shakespearean ladies book/wine club look like?

Suko

"Viola gets cocky, starts manspreading, and sometimes stares across the bar so very possessively that Olivia has to smirk and settle back on her lap." *giggle*

YOU KNOW WHAT I LIKE, GURL, NO LIE.

First of all: let’s talk about what kind of drinking everyone does.

Olivia and Viola drink incredibly artistic mixed drinks, whatever’s the newest thing, and get really handsy every single goddamn time. Not just with each other, Olivia wanders around the bar and drapes herself over the shoulders of others in their group–not strangers, obviously, she clams up with strangers and goes icy cold–and she breathes heavily on their cheeks, often leaving deep red lipstick prints on everyone’s cheeks. Viola gets cocky, starts manspreading, and sometimes stares across the bar so very possessively that Olivia has to smirk and settle back on her lap.

Celia and Rosalind drink whiskey and have loud, hand-wavy arguments about things. All the things. Often about the whiskey, who won the darts game, and whether reality is a function of our perception or not.

Lady Macbeth and Ophelia get along SCARILY well. Lady M orders the drinks and is teaching Ophelia how to be a connoisseur of the best wines. They’re working on Shiraz at the moment. Ophelia would take notes but guessed early on that it was better to just absorb everything she can. She loves the attention and Lady M loves the way Ophelia takes orders.

Cleopatra wrestles someone. Happens every time. That, or she dances on the bar. She tends to have a bottle of something–hell if she knows what–all to herself and she waves it wildly as she dances.

Beatrice is always holding someone’s hair in the bathroom. Juliet, often. That girl just can’t hold her tequila and she’s always so sure she can. Hermione and Paulina are always waiting for her afterward and they pat her on the back and tell her she’s so nice. Hero is outside arguing with Claudio on her phone.

The ladies from Loves Labors Lost are meanwhile engaged in an elaborate prank that involves a school mascot, the mayor’s Ferrari, and a parrot. They all have a bottle of champagne. The Queen has two.

Worbla Reveals a Better, Black Thermoplastic

by Courtney Kraft
Suko

Ooo this looks really nice. I guess I'm running out of excuses to not start making cosplay armor. Also she's so cute: "booby cups" LOL. And the weapons on the wall behind her!! So fun!

Must. Resist. Slide. Into. Cosplay. Moneypit.

For years, cosplayers have been using thermoplastics to create amazing armor and props. With a heat gun and some patience, you can design just about anything. The most common of these textiles is Worbla, which is malleable when heated. When it cools, you end up with a hard surface that can be painted. However, it’s not without some flaws. Worbla has a rough surface that needs to be sanded down and primed with multiple coats of wood glue to make it smooth and if you’re not careful, overheating it can cause irreparable bubbles. Also, it only came in tan.

Unpainted WorblaPhoto credit: Emily Chesley

But no more! Worbla has unveiled an exciting new thermoplastic called “Worbla’s Black-Art” that will revolutionize cosplay construction. Simply being black can be a huge time-saver, but the new material also offers a number of additional improvements over the original. Black-Art is more flexible, reaches malleability more quickly at 195 degrees Fahrenheit, has a smoother surface, bonds easily with other thermoplastics, and is easier to sculpt. Black-Art is designed specifically for artists and crafters.

I can’t explain just how excited I am for this (maybe because I’m really caffeinated). The thing is, I’m a novice cosplayer who has only used Worbla once to help my friend make her Lady Thor chestplate.  It was incredibly slow to shape. Black-Art’s flexibility will speed up the molding process, plus, the smoother surface will also cut down on the amount of sanding and priming required. Being black, you can even leave it unpainted. Do you get how amazing that is?!  You. Don’t. Have. To. Paint. It.

Erza – Cosplay released this video showing Black-Art in action to make the bracer pictured above. You can see how she easily sculpts and bonds the plastic together. To see more Black-Art in action, check out Kamui Cosplay‘s video below where she tests it out by remaking one of her breastplates:

Black-Art isn’t available just yet, but it will be soon. You’ll be able to purchase it through Worbla.com and pretty much anywhere else Worbla’s products are sold. Don’t expect this to be any less expensive–however, being able to re-mold scraps more smoothly means less throwing away your dollars.

Cinematic Artwork Illustrates Surreal Scenes from Futuristic Worlds

I love the first three the most, all part of the Eclipse series.

Fantasy and sci-fi collide in the haunting digital artwork of Jie Ma, a Chinese concept designer who imagines surreal scenes unfolding in futuristic worlds. Infused with realism, yet uncannily strange, the atmospheric dreamscapes contain fascinating imagery like colossal libraries, staircases in the sky, and empty cities built from towering monoliths. sagansense: ucresearch: The Augmented Reality Sandbox  The...

by simply-sithel
Suko

Holy crap I want to play with this. Oooo... a battlemap version!

sagansense:

ucresearch:

The Augmented Reality Sandbox

The Augmented Reality Sandbox (orginally developed by researchers at UC Davis) lets users sculpt mountains, canyons and rivers, then fill them with water or even create erupting volcanoes. This version of the device at UCLA was built by Gary Glesener using off-the-shelf parts and good ol’ playground sand.

Any shape made in the sandbox is detected by an Xbox Kinect sensor and processed with open source software. It is then projected as a color-coded contour map onto the sand.

Can’t get enough of this. Augmented reality is just ridiculous. These are the types of engaging technological applications we should have integrated into schools for hands-on science engagement to learn about geology, geophysics, and planetary science!
