Newswire: Karen O has a solo album coming out

by Sonia Saraiya

Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O is releasing her first solo album in September. Crush Songs  was recorded primarily in 2006 and 2007—which is kind of a long time ago, in music years—back around the time Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their Grammy-nominated Show Your Bones. Karen O, now 35, said in a statement that she titled it Crush Songs, because at the time, when she was 27, she “crushed a lot.”

The record arrives September 9 from Cult Records, the label founded by The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas. In the past few years, Karen O has been pursuing a lot more solo work, including Her’s “The Moon Song,” which was nominated for an Academy Award.

[UPDATED] GQ Says Olivia Wilde Is Too Hot To Play A Writer, She Responds Appropriately - Better to be a smartass than a dumbass, in my book.

by Susana Polo

HA. Kiss my smart ass, GQ. “@Jezebel: Olivia Wilde's ass too nice for her to play a writer, says GQ review http://t.co/WJx8BbjWgJ

— olivia wilde (@oliviawilde) June 25, 2014

GQ’s recent review of Olivia Wilde‘s Third Person took the liberty of proclaiming her performance as a writer was unbelievable because “With that tush, who’d need to be literate? Who’d want to?” Wilde, who’s impressed us before with her words, had a succinct response to the idea that a woman who meets arbitrary and subjective standards of physical attractiveness wouldn’t need or want to seek pursuits associated with intelligence or literacy.

[Update] And then GQ re-responded:

Newswire: Judy Blume is finally writing another book

by Laura M. Browning

Publisher Alfred A. Knopf announced yesterday that Judy Blume is working on her first adult book since Summer Sisters’ release in 1998. Slated to arrive next summer, there’s almost no other information available, though Blume’s editor told The New York Times that it will be “quintessential Judy”—so presumably we will love it. Blume said she’ll spend most of this summer working on revisions: “I’m both thrilled and terrified, my usual feelings at this point. I’ll be hiding out this summer revising, my favorite part of the process.”

Best known for YA and kids’ books like Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret; Superfudge; and Tales Of A Fourth-Grade Nothing, Blume has been the cool aunt to America’s children since at least 1970, when she taught a generation of girls the line, “We must, we must, we must increase our bust.”

Google pulls its all-star robot out of military competition to focus on commercial product

by Adrianne Jeffries

The $2 million Robotics Challenge, run by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is a competition for the most advanced robots in the world. The three-year competition is less than halfway over, but there was already a clear frontrunner: the Japanese team Schaft, which posted videos on YouTube of their incredible robot performing all the tasks weeks before the qualifying round. But today, DARPA announced that the Schaft team will be dropping out of the competition.

The development is disappointing for robotics fans, who won't get to see Schaft's prowess on display. But it wasn't entirely unexpected. Schaft was founded expressly to compete in the Robotics Challenge, but that trajectory changed when Google decided to acquire the company in November to add to its growing stable of robotics startups.

The Google acquisition made things a little awkward. Via the competition, Schaft was accepting money from the Defense Department, which meant Google was accepting money from the Defense Department. To complicate things, Google had also recently purchased Boston Dynamics, which is also participating in the challenge in a supporting role.

In March, Schaft announced it was renouncing DARPA funding but would stay in the competition. It seems Google has changed its mind since then. "Team Schaft has elected to withdraw from the finals," DARPA program manager Gill Pratt told reporters on a press call today. "They are going to be focusing on the development of their first commercial product. It was a very difficult decision for them, but they've really done extremely well and we're really glad to see them being successful now in the commercial world." Robotics fans, you can now be excited again.

German government cancels Verizon contract over NSA concerns

by Russell Brandom

Verizon just suffered a major setback at the hands of the NSA. Bloomberg is reporting that the German government is declining to renew its contracts with the telecom giant, primarily because of concerns over the company's collusion with NSA surveillance. "There are indications that Verizon is legally required to provide certain things to the NSA," German Interior Ministry spokesman Tobias Plate told Bloomberg, "and that's one of the reasons the cooperation with Verizon won't continue." The new contracts will require firms to confirm that they're not legally obligated to share data with foreign governments, a promise that Verizon might not be able to make.

Tech companies have complained in the past that the stigma of NSA spying has made products harder to market overseas, but Verizon's contract troubles are more tangible and direct than any previous report. The contract itself was relatively minor, covering internal communications between German lawmakers, but strikes a chord after earlier documents revealed that the NSA had monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone since 2002. Later leaks showed Merkel was far from alone: more than 100 other world leaders have been targeted for similar surveillance.

Some of the earliest animals with skeletons helped build reefs

by John Timmer
An electron micrograph of the concentric cones built by one species of Cloudina.

Today, stromatolites—large communities of microbes living in watery environments—are limited to a few environments where local conditions make the water extremely salty. But for billions of years before the first animal life, they were the only game in town. Tiny microbes built giant communities. One reef, described in a new paper, was seven kilometers long and over 300 meters thick. "Here microbial reefs individually form elliptical mounds that reach up to 20m in diameter, 5 to 10m in width, and 5m in height," the authors say.

But that reef was built as times were changing. The first animals were already present, and a few species had already evolved the ability to construct skeletons. And according to a new study, these first animals moved into the existing reefs, finding niches to occupy within the microbial structure and even starting to build their own, independent features.

Prior to this study, the earliest known reefs were built by sponges and date to the Cambrian, 530 million years ago. But the reef described above, located in Namibia, was buried by volcanic ash that has been dated to 547.3 million years ago, which places it in the Ediacaran period, the time when the first remains of animals appear in the fossil record. Most of these animals look nothing like any of the species alive today, and very few appear to have had any skeletal elements.

Other companies are already selling Google Cardboard clones

by Josh Lowensohn

Google I/O attendees strolled out of yesterday's keynote with a simple cardboard kit that turns an Android phone into a virtual reality headset. It's part of an experimental Google service called Cardboard designed to create VR experiences inexpensively, and with hardware people already have. Even so, there's some work needed to make the headset, which — as the name implies — is a mix of cardboard origami, magnets, close-up lenses, and velcro. Google's offered up instructions on how to procure all this on your own, but isn't selling the kit it was giving out at I/O. Now another company has stepped in, offering the same thing at what it says is half the price.

Google's own suggestions for parts run $45

Dodocase, which makes protective cases for phones, tablets, and ebook readers, now offers a Google Cardboard VR Toolkit. It comes with a precut cardboard sheet, lenses, magnet, velcro, rubber band, and the option to tack on an NFC tag (which can be used to fire up the Cardboard app) for an extra five bucks. In an email to The Verge, Dodocase cofounder and CEO Craig Dalton said the company estimated Google's own parts list to run about $45, and coming from four different vendors. Dalton says the kits should be ready in 4 to 6 weeks.

Cardboard originated as a 20 percent time project from a pair of Google employees in Paris, and currently only has a handful of demos that let you explore Google Earth, Street View, and other Google properties with some makeshift stereoscopic imagery. It relies on an Android smartphone to split up the images, which are viewed through close-up lenses. What Google described as an "experimental" software development kit will also let developers build their own Cardboard apps.

Apartheid in Detroit: Water for corporations, not people
June 18, 2014

Biill and Hillary Clinton were up to their ears in more than $10 million worth of legal debt at the end of Clinton’s tenure as president. Donald Trump was bailed out of four bankruptcies. But Detroit residents are having a basic human right – the access to water – cancelled for being late on bills of $150.

In the spring, Detroit’s Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr ordered water shutoffs for 150,000 Detroit residents late on their bills. Orr is an unelected bureaucrat accountable only to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, who appointed Orr and several other “emergency managers” in largely poor, black communities like Detroit, Benton Harbor, Flint, and Highland Park, to make all financial decisions on behalf of local elected governments.

Orr’s plan will shut off water for 1,500 to 3,000 Detroit residents each week. Neither Orr nor Homrich, the contracting company Orr hired to shut off residents’ water, answered calls for interview requests.

Detroit citizens have been protesting the decision on the basis that water is a human right that cannot be denied to families who need it for cooking, bathing and flushing toilets. Many residents facing water shutoffs are currently on monthly payment plans with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD), paying upwards of $160 per month as water rates continue to rise, and were given no prior notice that their water was about to be cut off. Last week, the Detroit City Council held a public hearing to discuss a proposed 4 percent hike in water rates.

“The families I’ve talked to in my neighborhood and others around the city are confused about why they’re being hit (in this way),” community activist Russ Bellant told the Michigan Citizen. “Some knew they were behind, but thought they’d have time to pay it. These are people who mow the lawn on the vacant lots next door (to them).”

As the Michigan Citizen reported, residents with delinquent water bills are losing their water while prominent Detroit corporations with much larger delinquent water bills are being left alone. The Palmer Park Golf Club owes $200,000. Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings, owes DWSD $80,000. Ford Field owes $55,000. Kevyn Orr is arguing that the shutoffs are necessary to pay for the DWSD infrastructure – yet when Detroit raised $1 billion in bonds to pay for new infrastructure, $537 million of it went to banks like JPMorgan Chase, UBS and Morgan Stanley to pay off interest instead.

Community activists are placing blame on the structural, institutionalized poverty in Detroit that forces the people to foot the bill for corporate mismanagement. Detroit’s bankruptcy and urban blight is a direct result of the housing bubble that burst, putting over 60,000 homes in foreclosure and rendering thousands of families homeless.

Dan Gilbert, the billionaire owner of Quicken Loans who is financing much of the gentrified development of downtown Detroit, has been particularly blamed for his company’s role in exacerbating the foreclosure crisis through its intimidation of homeowners, pressuring them into risky subprime lending schemes.

“Instead of going after the corporate institutions who owe millions, they’d rather turn off the water for poor people,” said Demeeko Williams, an organizer with Detroiters Resisting Emergency Management.

To fight back, Williams and other community activist groups like Moratorium NOW! and the Detroit After Party are teaming up to create theDetroit Water Brigade, a mutual aid effort aimed at providing residents with water and stopping water shutoffs with nonviolent direct action. The Detroit Water Brigade has set up a bridal registry on Amazon.com inviting those interested to help purchase necessary supplies like water coolers, cases of bottled water, heavy-duty contractor bags, and orange safety vests.

Some of the more radical direct actions being promoted by the Detroit Water Brigade include distributing flyers instructing people on how to turn their own water back on after it’s been shut off, and how to pre-emptively stop contractors from shutting water for their home. The flyer reads:

“Step 1: If your water is off, have the neighborhood water person or a friend (not you) obtain a water key and turn it back on 1st. (If you expect your water to be turned off, go to step 2.)

“Step 2: Purchase ready mix cement from the hardware [store].

“Step 3: Fill lockbox pipe 3/4ths full with dry cement mix.

“Step 4: Add water to top off. Don’t use rocks because rocks can be sucked out.”

The Detroit Water Brigade is also meeting regularly to train interested residents in nonviolent civil disobedience. Residents are planning to form human chains putting themselves between water lockboxes and contractors hired to shut off water. The water brigade is counting on Detroit’s understaffed police department to not have the resources to arrest and jail everyone participating in the water shutoff demonstrations.

In response to sustained protests from Detroit residents, the DWSD has removed the “Water Shut Off” decals from its trucks.

Source

but #WesternPrivilege means things like this never happen in the west!!!1!!!!11!

Y’all, this is some real shit. If folks can’t get water they can’t live, work, and families risk their kids being taken by CPS for neglect. I was reading up and it looks like folks who can pay are still getting it turned off because they can’t provide proper documentation of home ownership or rental agreements in time. And it’s not like this wasn’t built to happen either with water prices shooting up and another 8% price hike going into effect soon. You need proof that black and brown people don’t matter in the US—Detroit and this water shut off crisis is a pretty clear example. Spread the word and donate to Water Brigade if you can. Maybe if we all start talking about this the UN will intervene like folks in Detroit are asking.

Match.com, Mensa Create Dating Site For Geniuses

by samzenpus

mpicpp writes in with news about a new dating opportunity for Mensa members. It takes a special person to join Mensa. For one, the elite society only takes individuals with IQ scores in the 98th percentile, meaning just 1 in 50 Americans is eligible. This exclusivity — some might say snobbery — is part of Mensa's lore. Early Mensans in Britain walked around with yellow buttons, organizational publications once referred to non-Mensa members as "Densans," and last year, a top Mensa member and tester called anyone with an IQ of 60 a "carrot." In short, you don't always join Mensa because you think you're smart. You join to be set apart from most people, who are, as one member put it: "mundane." But a new partnership between American Mensa and online dating giant Match.com offers a new, enticing reason to join the society of geniuses: true love. Beginning this week, members of the brainiac group can connect through a separate, exclusive dating service called Mensa Match. In addition, Match.com members can add a special Mensa badge to their profiles, signaling a specific interest in connecting with a single person with a confirmed genius-level IQ score.

The world must build more nuclear power plants to halt climate change

by Rich McCormick
firehose

great

Nuclear power plants aren't being built fast enough for the world to hit important carbon emissions targets, according to the International Energy Agency. A lack of trust in nuclear technology, coupled with the global economic downturn that began in 2008, has resulted in a slowdown of construction and a plateau of the world's nuclear energy capacity.

Nuclear.capacityx519

According to the "2DS" scenario presented by the International Energy Agency, the world must halve its energy- and process-related CO2 emissions from 2011 levels in order to ensure an 80 percent chance of limiting the global average temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to achieve that aim, 186 gigawatts of nuclear capacity must be added between now and 2025. At current rates of nuclear plant construction, the Earth's nuclear energy output will fall between 5 and 24 percent short of that target.

Nuclear.constructionx519

Worldwide attitudes toward nuclear power are mixed three years after the Fukushima disaster. Japan and Germany reacted quickly against the technology, shutting down their reactors and prompting public debates about nuclear energy's safety, while China and Russia pressed ahead, planning ambitious nuclear power plant construction projects. 72 nuclear power plants were under construction at the end of 2013, but such facilities usually take between five and ten years to get up and running, and need to be retired after 30 to 40 years of operation. Capacity is sometimes replaced rather than increased. The United States retired four reactors in 2013, with another slated to be taken offline this fall — the country only has five in construction.

The IEA says 186 gigwatts of nuclear capacity must be added by 2025

Even with these projects underway, the IEA is projecting a shortfall in nuclear power. Fukushima shows the energy generation method can be dangerous, but the IEA warns that if nuclear capacity, which it says provides 18 percent of the world's energy mix, isn't increased, a spike in global temperatures could be even more damaging.

angry tapir writes The Australian government has indicated it intends to seek a boost to the powers of Australia's spy agencies, particularly ASIO (the Australian Security Intelligence Organization). The attorney-general told the Senate today that the government would introduce legislation based on recommendations of a parliamentary committee that last year canvassed "reforms" including boosting ASIO's power to penetrate third party computer systems to intercept communications to and from a target. That report also covered other issues such as the possibility of introducing a mandatory data retention scheme for ISPs and telcos.

More on Hacking Team's Government Spying Software

by Bruce Schneier
firehose

great

Hacking Team is an Italian malware company that sells exploit tools to governments. Both Kaspersky Lab and Citizen Lab have published detailed reports on its capabilities against Android, iOS, Windows Mobile, and BlackBerry smart phones.

They allow, for example, for covert collection of emails, text messages, call history and address books, and they can be used to log keystrokes and obtain search history data. They can take screenshots, record audio from the phones to monitor calls or ambient conversations, hijack the phone's camera to snap pictures or piggyback on the phone's GPS system to monitor the user's location. The Android version can also enable the phone's Wi-Fi function to siphon data from the phone wirelessly instead of using the cell network to transmit it. The latter would incur data charges and raise the phone owner's suspicion.

[...]

Once on a system, the iPhone module uses advance techniques to avoid draining the phone's battery, turning on the phone's microphone, for example, only under certain conditions.

"They can just turn on the mic and record everything going on around the victim, but the battery life is limited, and the victim can notice something is wrong with the iPhone, so they use special triggers," says Costin Raiu, head of Kaspersky's Global Research and Analysis team.

One of those triggers might be when the victim's phone connects to a specific WiFi network, such as a work network, signaling the owner is in an important environment. "I can't remember having seen such advanced techniques in other mobile malware," he says.

Hacking Team's mobile tools also have a "crisis" module that kicks in when they sense the presence of certain detection activities occurring on a device, such as packet sniffing, and then pause the spyware's activity to avoid detection. There is also a "wipe" function to erase the tool from infected systems.

Hacking Team claims to sell its tools only to ethical governments, but Citizen Lab has found evidence of their use in Saudi Arabia. It can't be certain the Saudi government is a customer, but there's good circumstantial evidence. In general, circumstantial evidence is all we have. Citizen Lab has found Hacking Team servers in many countries, but it's a perfectly reasonable strategy for Country A to locate its servers in Country B.

And remember, this is just one example of government spyware. Assume that the NSA -- as well as the governments of China, Russia, and a handful of other countries -- have their own systems that are at least as powerful.

Techno in 3D: Industry-leading Korg synthesizer to rock Nintendo 3DS

by Sam Machkovech
firehose

great!!!!!!!!!!!!

Knobs and knobs and knobs and knobs and knobs: Korg's classic MS-10 synthesizer will see an improved emulator in this September's launch of the DS-12, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.

In 2008, Korg, the music industry's leading supplier of analog synthesizers, made waves—figuratively and literally—with its surprisingly robust DS-10, a synthesizer emulator for the original Nintendo DS. Since the cartridge landed well before tablets and smartphones had risen as suitable, portable pieces of musical hardware, its use of the DS touchscreen proved welcome for anybody who wanted to quickly twist knobs, create sequences, and create glorious, synthesized sounds in a cheap, portable way.

However, since its host hardware only had 4MB of RAM, the designers at Japanese studio Detune had to make compromises in reproducing the decades-old MS-10 synthesizer, particularly in cutting the number of simultaneous sounds. After launching various follow-ups on iOS, the DSi, and even a limited keyboard synthesizer on the 3DS, Korg has returned with its most robust synth emulation offering yet: the DS-12, set to launch this September.

For starters, Korg enthusiasts can now look forward to 12 discrete synthesizers running simultaneously, as opposed to the original DS-10's weird hack of four synths and two "drum tracks" (which actually worked by pre-recording drum tracks to be played back, so as to reduce overall hardware load). As with last year's M01-D piano synthesizer, the new DS-12 will also include longer 64-step patterns, which can either lengthen sequences or provide greater sonic density in the same amount of time.
