Among the stops on the tour: 891 Post Street, where Hammett lived and wrote in the 1920s, and Burritt Street, where Sam Spade’s partner is murdered in The Maltese Falcon. This month, science fiction and fantasy magazine Lightspeed interrupted its normal publishing schedule to bring readers a special issue: “Women Destroy Science Fiction!”

Edited and written entirely by women, this issue is one part of a long, ongoing conversation about what constitutes “real” science fiction and whether women are inherently any good at writing it.

why has nobody mentioned the fact that in australia there are 3-4 months a year where everybody just accepts that they’re going to get attacked by magpies. It is literally called “swooping season” and these birds will fly down to peck your fucking face, and people get their eyes ripped out and shit, it’s fucking brutal.

My teacher had to go to hospital and have surgery because of swooping season. It was in the parking lot of school and all the kids would do a mad dash towards the car as the magpies tried to kill us.

My favorite part is where having someone film it is an afterthought. I imagine the writer having no idea what “Vine” is but having some vague thought that kids do things for it, and an editor at the last second deciding to look it up.

Shortly after noon Wednesday, the Republicans of the House Appropriations Committee (plus one Democrat) voted to block the District’s recently passed marijuana decriminalization law. Leading the charge was Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), who said the measure was “bad policy” that would harm children. But District lawyers are now exploring whether he might have actually moved to, in effect, legalize marijuana possession instead.
