friskitriski: Simpsons reference in Kill Bill volume 1 Are...

friskitriski:

Simpsons reference in Kill Bill volume 1

Are we sure it’s not the other way around? The chin and hair say that dude is totally Tarantino.

Simpsons parodied Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino in the original episode (1997) and Tarantino returned the favor in Kill Bill (2003).

Congress Quietly Deletes a Key Disclosure of Free Trips Lawmakers Take

Congress Quietly Deletes a Key Disclosure of Free Trips Lawmakers Take:

House Ethics reverses decades of precedent as lobbyist-sponsored lawmaker travel expands.

By Shane Goldmacher, writing at The National Journal.

It’s going to be a little more difficult to ferret out which members of Congress are lavished with all-expenses-paid trips around the world after the House has quietly stripped away the requirement that such privately sponsored travel be included on lawmakers’ annual financial-disclosure forms.

The move, made behind closed doors and without a public announcement by the House Ethics Committee, reverses more than three decades of precedent. Gifts of free travel to lawmakers have appeared on the yearly financial form dating back its creation in the late 1970s, after the Watergate scandal. National Journal uncovered the deleted disclosure requirement when analyzing the most recent batch of yearly filings.

”This is such an obvious effort to avoid accountability,” said Melanie Sloan, executive director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. “There’s no legitimate reason. There’s no good reason for it.”

To the Veterans of Portland:

I know how the fireworks make this holiday real shitty for some of you. I'm a veteran myself and although my deployment wasn't all that intense, I know the excuses you tell your friends and family about what you'll be doing tonight so you'll have to miss the fireworks show. If you just want to hang out, drink beer and blast some music feel free to PM me.

Review: Tokaido: Crossroads

by quintinsmithster@gmail.com (Quintin)

tl;dr: nope

Quinns: Remember our Tokaido review? It should stick in your mind. This was a piquant Antoine Bauza game that dreamt of players hiking along Japan’s East Sea Road, from Kyoto to old Edo, simply trying to have the nicest time.

You collected local handicrafts and soaked in hot springs. You'd arrive at an inn for the night and buy soup with the last two coins in your pocket. Best of all, you could arrive at Tokyo, destitute, with nothing but a handful of cloying sweets to your name, and still end up winning because you'd earned the most wonderful memories. This was a game that lingered in your life and living room, like a scented candle.

Which brings us to Tokaido: Crossroads! An expansion for Tokaido that updates it “for the gamer”. How on earth does that work?

No, wait. I know. It’ll add the yakuza, swords, magic spells and dice-rolling. Ha! Wouldn’t that be funny! Because that's not going to... happen...

Wait. Why is there a sword on this card. No. NO.

Qualcomm Takes Down 100+ GitHub Repositories With DMCA Notice

by Soulskill

christ

An anonymous reader writes Qualcomm has forced GitHub to remove over 100 repositories due to "unauthorized publication, disclosure, and copying of highly sensitive, confidential, trade secret, and copyright-protected documents." Among the repositories taken down were for CyanogenMod and Sony Xperia. The issue though is that these "highly sensitive" and "confidential" files are Linux kernel code and reference/sample code files that can be easily found elsewhere, including the Android kernel, but GitHub has complied with Qualcomm's DMCA request.

PiGrrl

by Liz Upton

Adafruit’s 3D Thursday series is getting us terribly excited every time they roll out a new project with a Pi in it. Yesterday’s was a doozy: so much so that the engineering team stood around my desk and made puppy-dog eyes and sighing sounds at me until I agreed to email LadyAda and beg a demo sample of the project from them. (She says she’s sending the pink one, Gordon, just to punish you for being so demanding.)

Meet the extraordinary PiGrrl, a home-baked Raspberry Pi clone of the Game Boy.

If you don’t think that’s the best thing ever, you’re dead inside.
As always with Adafruit projects, the PiGrrl is documented minutely; you can find a complete tutorial on their website, along with files for the 3d printer at Thingiverse. This is one of the more complicated builds we’ve featured, but we think the results speak for themselves

LadyAda says: “Woohoo!” After careful consideration, so do we.

New Russian Law To Forbid Storing Russians' Data Outside the Country

by timothy
TechWeek Europe reports that on Friday Russia's parliament passed a law "which bans online businesses from storing personal data of Russian citizens on servers located abroad[.] ... According to ITAR-TAAS, the changes to existing legislation will come into effect in September 2016, and apply to email services, social networks and search engines, including the likes of Facebook and Google. Domain names or net addresses not complying with regulations will be put on a blacklist maintained by Roskomnadzor (the Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications), the organisation which already has the powers to take down websites suspected of copyright infringement without a court order. In the case of non-compliance, Roskomnadzor will be able to impose 'sanctions,' and even instruct local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to cut off access to the offending resource." According to the article, the "measure is widely seen as a response to reports about the intrusive surveillance practices of the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the UK’s GCHQ. Edward Snowden, who revealed sensitive data about the operations of both, is currently residing in Russia, with his asylum application up for a review in a couple of months." The writer points out that this would mean many web sites would be legally unavailable altogether to Russian users.

Bombs, Silence, Building a Better Culture — Silverstring Media

by gguillotte

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Three days ago, on July 1st, Samantha Allen, a writer, game designer, and critic we have massive respect for, faced an unbelievable amount of harassment. The stated cause was that she criticised Giant Bomb for refusing to have any women on their staff, for filling their latest vacancies with yet more white dudes, and for passing over women and other marginalized candidates who were also clearly qualified. But let’s be honest, Samantha was also attacked because she is a woman, because she dared to speak her mind, and because she dared to make her existence known. She was attacked for taking up space that some feel doesn’t belong to her. Finally, she was attacked for telling a guy on twitter to "go fuck themselves” when he asserted that maybe the host of brilliant but marginalized writers who applied really weren't qualified, and that maybe only white dudes are currently capable of doing this kind of work.
