by Dan Van Winkle

Quick science lesson: Puppies’ powers include (but are not limited to) curing nightmares, getting away with using a sleeping dog’s face as a pillow, making you say, “Awwww,” etc. Don’t believe me? Please allow this puppy to demonstrate.

Nearly 3,500 Years Old, an Egyptian Monument Gets a Laser Cleaning

by Kelly

10BLOCKSweb3 articleLarge

We can hardly imagine a cleaning task of more epic or ancient proportions! This story in the NYTimes details the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s laser cleaning process of the 3,500 obelisk in their care:

Diana Craig Patch, the head of the Egyptian art department at the Met, raised an intriguing possibility. “I think it unlikely that there will be more scholarship on the hieroglyphs as a result of the cleaning, but we may know more about how it was painted possibly,” she said. “Traces might be found.”

Conservancy officials considered using lasers, microabrasives or chemical cleaners on the Obelisk. Beginning in October 2012, each method was tested on a small patch of the monument’s south face. Experts were then convened.

When everybody went up in a lift to see, by a great margin they said the laser had produced the greatest effect, with virtually no impact on the stone,” said Christopher Nolan, the conservancy’s vice president for planning, design and construction.

Magnetic Magneto Helmet

by Amy Ratcliffe

magneto helmet 2

If you’re going to dress like Magneto from X-Men, it’s only appropriate for your helmet to be magnetic. Tumblr users vasyavzdroihev and jiyouh made the rough shape of the helmet from foam and paper tape. They installed neodymium magnets on the top of the helmet and covered the foam with “epoxy soaked glass fiber fabrics.” They then added putty and polished the helmet until it was smooth before adding trim made from lightweight PVC.

Google Glass pioneer moves to Amazon

by Vlad Savov

Babak Parviz, the man who founded and led the Google X project that gave rise to Google Glass, has moved to work at Amazon. Revealing the news on his Google+ page, the Iranian-American scientist describes himself as "super excited" but doesn't disclose any details about what he'll be developing next. The focus of Parviz's research so far has been the pursuit of an intelligent contact lens that would both obtain readings about its wearer through sensors and provide information via augmented reality visual overlays. In many ways, Google Glass is the compromise solution on the way to that goal.

Now that he's joined Amazon, Parviz can be expected to expand on the company's efforts around optics, which are already a prominent part of the new Fire Phone. Amazon's Firefly feature is designed to recognize objects around you, while the Fire Phone's interface uses multiple front-facing cameras to adapt to your perspective. Parviz's interest in augmented reality should mesh easily with Amazon's pursuit of omniscience — both for and about its user.

It's important to note that Google Glass took over three years of development inside Google's secret labs before it was introduced to developers, and Parviz himself has been working on smart optics systems for decades. The product of his work for Amazon, therefore, is unlikely to be apparent anytime soon.

South Park to move behind Hulu’s paywall and end unlimited free streaming

by Lee Hutchinson
Hope you guys like Hulu, because that's what you're going to be using to watch South Park from here on.

Since 2008, fans of the Comedy Central cartoon South Park have been able to stream the show’s entire library (minus a few permanently redacted episodes) from the South Park Studios site. But according to a new post on the show's official blog, this fan-friendly unlimited streaming arrangement will soon be ending: South Park is moving to Hulu. Folks who want to watch more than a limited selection of old South Park episodes will either have to resort to physical media or begin paying $7.99 per month to subscribe to Hulu Plus.

Under what the blog post describes as an "exclusive, multi-year" agreement, the current offering of streamable South Park episodes will remain available until September 24 at both the show’s official site and also on Hulu. After September 24—the start of the show’s 18th season—new episodes will be available to both standard Hulu and Hulu Plus customers the day after they air (Variety’s writeup says that the official South Park Studios site will also have next-day streaming, but that isn’t mentioned in the blog post).

The big change is the paywalling of past episodes. After September 24, free Hulu users and visitors to the show’s official site will only be able to watch "a revolving selection of free episodes." Unlimited access—which today is free—will only be available for Hulu Plus users.

We do soccer pretty well in America

by Jeremiah Oshan

sounders-timbers is the sox-yankees of MLS but with more fans and a bigger budget

Here's the pregame scene from the Sounders-Timbers game.

You've heard about Americans packing bars and public places all over the country to watch the World Cup. But the biggest soccer tournament in the world is one thing. Would American really show up for regular-old Major League Soccer matches?

This may not be a regular scene around the country, but the pregame for Seattle Sounders-Portland Timbers is legit:
